>> welcome back. 8.42 here on this sunday morning. and dave spahr is monitoring that fog and is monitoring those cold temperatures that we're dealing with. you're heading out the door to maybe walk your dog or something. you're going to want to bundle up this morning. yeah, going to have that. a sweater thrown on their to definitely jacket it's cold to get things started. >> there's the fog that we have. it's peeling away a little better now. as you can see, there's the blue skies, a top of it. so we get the sun in here. you get the radiational heating causes warming mixes it out with the drier air aloft, typical currents. we have jumping into tonight. the return of fog, as you can see, will greet us tomorrow morning, although it could be, but we're patchy a little bit. they're looking at spilling into the central valley as well. we'll be left with some scattered clouds still into the afternoon because don't forget tomorrow, we'll have the overcast kind of going on here. and this fog will work even with that 30 up to santa rosa. 42 antioch, 36 for concord, east bay

8:46 am
receding hairlines and comes wrinkles, painful joints and clogged arteries. as with everything else, your voice actually ages 2 and for people like us to talk for a living. this is important stuff to know about. most people don't think about taking care of their voice. muscles like they would their our health expert walk is here with some tips to help keep your voice from growing old. karen, thank you for bringing this one up. i wouldn't. i would never thought about it. yeah. most people don't until they lose their voice later in older elderly years. >> so what are some of the signs of an old voice that we can start looking out for? >> first of all, let me explain what you need to make sound. the first thing you need is you need a vibration source and those are your vocal cords. so imagine this as your vocal cords. this is your >> throat and your. the vocal cords are bands that go across and those need to vibrate to
8:47 am
make sound. the other thing you need is you need a power source. you need air, you know, from your love. bands move those vibration sources and then you your throat, your mouth, your lips, your teeth to modify the sound. so those are the first 3 things that you need to have a nice voice. now, you age, some things start to happen and one of the you lose elasticity in local and when that happens, it's just like you lose asked the less to see in your muscles. they become less stretchable. and and when that happens, your vocal cords can't length in and and move like they did when they are younger therefore you're going to have a different kind of sound. maybe courses might be more horse, a raspy it. have ever
8:48 am
talk to someone over the noel? and you can just kind of tell that the person is a little more elderly. yeah, yeah, you definitely can. i get i you don't really think about ways to combat that or or to keep your voice a little stronger. you talked a little bit about the reduced alas to city, which makes sense. >> but there's also some other key reasons that you can sound older. so like decreased lung capacity, which i imagine your daily habits might have an effect on that. >> right. and and when you lose at the last to city and in your lung tissue, they just can't expand and hold as much air. so that's one of the problems. the other is vocal cord, dehydration. you know, the vocal cords dry out and that can be part just not getting good blood flow as much blood flow is maybe before as well as a out of a creek decreased number that
8:49 am
lugar can glance, you know, so you're just not getting that moisture, which is going to cause you to cough is going to cause you to sound horse. so people in a job like i like job like this, where you it's over. you stage a a >> pop. an issue there. yes, definitely so when you talk a lot or you have to talk loud, those vocal chords will bang against each other and they could cause a little nodules. and they're like low calluses. and that could cause a you to, you know, have a very porous foist. so people that talk a lot are people that talk unless it in very loud, noisy environments have to really be careful because you can actually cause hemorrhaging in the vocal cords and you can have permanent damage from that. we've heard of professional singers having
8:50 am
have surgery to try and correct things like that. what they're there is because of the overuse. okay. you've got 10 tips to keeping your voice younger. the first one is exercising just in. general is supposed exercise. >> one of the things that has people. well, i see this a lot in younger people, their posture star, you know, you get the text neck, the rounded shoulders when you have poor posture, you just can't expand. those loves like you would. if you are standing up straight, you know, just try it. if you're bent over, you just can't breathing really hard. you also need very strong abdominal when you have strong ads, those that those ads are going to help push the air out of your lungs. so that's really important muscles, atrophy like to die if and all those things will atrophy and cost vending of muscles as well as thinning of the vocal obviously good care for your teeth and gums just because that's where the sounds coming out anyway. yeah. as you if you lose your
8:51 am
teeth. yeah. start to deteriorate. so that's going to any time to change in your face is going to make a difference in the sound, avoid shouting and yelling. yes, try to control yourself. so the don't want to the card banging? i'm one of those people that lose my voice very easily. so i think about that drinking lots of water. i think that's the important yes, kind of forget that that will help keep your vocal hydrate it so very important. try to get in down to 8 8 cups a day and sip maybe 50 every 15 minutes. this kind of the what seniors do. these are interesting control coughing and then limiting your alcohol. yeah, the coughing is going to cause scarring. so if you you're sick, you want to try and control that as much as possible. however, decongestant that
8:52 am
decongestants are going to cause dehydration. so depending on what you used to control the coughing and then after east, do get over your cold or or whatever it is? go ahead and allow your voice to rest. you know, just don't top for a couple days so that the vocal cords can heal and alcohol that's going to inflame the mucus membranes. you don't want to do that. limiting alcohol and of course, not smoking. i know that's your number 10 skipped out there just because that's an extra curricular that people partake in. >> right, right. >> a lot of people have acid reflex now. did it. and and that's also going irritate the and cause dryness. so try to avoid things like very acidic foods, fatty foods and a very carbonated high. the carbonated drinks as well as alcohol and something you can do. >> singing you say singing in the shower, actually, yes,
8:53 am
saying it's great because you're going to be using those muscles. so they're not going to in to shrink. >> and and even in the shower, there's a lot of moisture. so there again, you're going to kate, the local cart. while just like our bodies, we got it to, you know, our muscles and that sort of thing. we've got to take care of our voices as well. karen, thank you for all these tips this morning. always appreciate having you.

though we know a lot of folks focussed on a southern california today because that's where the forty-niners going to play the rams. dave spahr has got a look at your weather forecast up here in case you're heading out to go watch the game with some friends, dave, or are they going to need jackets later today? all look so looks to be ok for the afternoon. it's a little chilly to start, though. still is a good morning. well, and this is what it looks like the east bay shoreline. we've really improved this fog situation. >> still lingering, as you see off in the background, the foreground get in the east bay shoreline to light up now as we get to tonight tomorrow morning will be retreated to this fog. know this is going to be a lot of cloud cover going on. but still to be some surface fog and spilling into the central valley as far as the temperatures stand now, 34 stop the santa rosa. that's hearty bunch. 39 also napa. at least we're getting some movement off to the east bay. lots of 40's at work here in a 50 for oakland. 45 meanwhile, for san jose up to tahoe, we don't see any even dusting of snow coming. we do see a
9:44 am
little temperature drop with high scratching the freezing mark by wednesday. just some scattered clouds on tuesday. so it was a hope that we can get just a little dusting of snow by midweek, but it looks like that system will make it there back to those winds by tomorrow night. looks like some winds developing into tuesday morning. this will be those offshore winds and covering some of the valleys up in the north bay spilling across off towards the east bay longer-range forecast models as we wait for something to happen. all we're getting the scattered clouds. temperatures jump around a little bit. most of the energy, those up and around us carrying with it, the valuable rain or precipitation. as you can see. and this takes us into next week. so it looks like another dry week. coming up ahead with not much relief on that front temperature we're at 58 for san francisco for a high pretty much the same along the coast. bayside. let's to about 58 for burlingame, 60 foster city and palo alto in the south bay mid 60's or approaching the mid 60's. a lot of lower 60's too. back to 61 for union city.
9:45 am
fremont lower 60's also for tri valley, dublin 62, along with walnut creek and concord. 57 for a berkeley and spiff the 8 for the or cold start in the 30's today. 63 for fairfield. 59 for napa. 62 santa rosa. so again tonight, some cloud cover redeveloping. that will be also with some fog to going on and will have to contend with some cloud cover for your monday. that will blow away as we see much of the rest of the week. and we get this piece is that the system is dropping south. but the other noteworthy thing is chilly morning lows. once we shake these clouds off in the upper 30's, it looks like so, you know, a good reminder that it is winter with 40's covering us at the coast. >> thanks, dave. you want to listen to this because for your help this morning, signs of aging include more than receding hairlines and comes wrinkles, painful joints and clogged arteries. as with everything else, your voice actually ages 2 and for people like us to talk for a living. this is important stuff to know about. most people don't think about taking care of their voice. muscles like they
9:46 am
would their our health expert walk is here with some tips to help keep your voice from growing old. karen, thank you for bringing this one up. i wouldn't. i would never thought about it. yeah. most people don't until they lose their voice later in older elderly years. >> so what are some of the signs of an old voice that we can start looking out for? >> first of all, let me explain what you need to make sound. the first thing you need is you need a vibration source and those are your vocal cords. so imagine this as your vocal cords. this is your >> throat and your. the vocal cords are bands that go across and those need to vibrate to make sound. the other thing you need is you need a power source. you need air, you know, from your love. bands move those vibration sources
9:47 am
and then you your throat, your mouth, your lips, your teeth to modify the sound. so those are the first 3 things that you need to have a nice voice. now, you age, some things start to happen and one of the you lose elasticity in those of local and when that happens, it's just like you lose asked the less to see in your muscles. they become less stretchable. and and when that happens, your vocal cords can't length in and and move like they did when they were younger therefore, you're going to have a different kind of sound. maybe courses might be more horse, a raspy it. have ever talk to someone over the noel? and you can just kind of tell that the person is a little more. elderly. yeah, yeah, you definitely can. i get i you don't really think about ways to combat
9:48 am
that or or to keep your voice a little stronger. you talked a little bit about the reduced alas to city, which makes sense. >> but there's also some other key reasons that you can sound older. so like decreased lung capacity, which i imagine your daily habits might have an effect on that. >> right. and and when you lose at the last to city and in your lung tissue, they just can't expand and hold as much air. so that's one of the problems. the other is vocal cord, dehydration. you know, the vocal cords dry out and that can be part just not getting good blood flow as much blood flow is maybe before as well as a out of a creek decreased number luther can glance, you know, so you're just not getting that moisture, which is going to cause you to cough is going to cause you to sound horse. so people in a job like i'm like
9:49 am
job like this where you it's over. you stage a a >> pop. an issue there. yes, definitely so when you talk a lot or you have to talk loud, those vocal chords will bang against each other and they could cause a little nodules. and they're like low calluses. and that could cause a you to, you know, have a very course foist. so people that talk a lot are people that talk unless it in very loud, noisy environments have to really be careful because you can actually cause hemerrhaging in the vocal cords and you can have permanent damage from that. we've heard of professional singers having have surgery to try and correct things like that. what they're there is because of the overuse. okay. you've got 10 tips to keeping your voice younger. the first one is exercising just in. general is supposed exercise. >> one of the things that has
9:50 am
people. well, i see this a lot in younger people, their posture star, you know, you get the text neck, the rounded shoulders when you have poor posture, you just can't expand. those loves like you would. if you were standing up straight, you know, just try it. if you're bent over, you just can't breed really hard. you also need very strong abdominal when you have strong those that those ads are going to help push the air out of your lungs. so that's really important muscles, atrophy like to die if and all those things will atrophy and cost vending of muscles as well as thinning of the vocal obviously good care for your teeth and gums just because that's where the sounds coming out anyway. yeah. as you if you lose your teeth. yeah. start to deteriorate. so that's going any time to change in your face is going to make a difference in the sound, avoid shouting and yelling. yes, try to control
9:51 am
so the don't want to the card banging. i'm one of those people that lose my voice very easily. so i think about that drinking lots of water. i think that's the important yes, kind of forget that that will help keep your vocal hydrate it so very important trying to get in down to 8 8 cups a day and sip maybe 50 every 15 minutes. that's kind of the what seniors do. these are interesting control coughing and then limiting your alcohol. yeah, the coughing is going to cause scarring. so if you you're sick, you want to try and control that as much as possible. however, decongestant that decongestants are going to cause dehydration. so depending on what you used to control the coughing and then after east, do get over your cold or or whatever it is? go ahead and allow your voice to
9:52 am
rest. you know, just don't top for a couple days so that the vocal cords can heal and alcohol that's going to inflame the mucus membranes. you don't want to do that. limiting alcohol and of course, not smoking. i know that's your number 10 skipped out there just because that's an extra curricular that people partake in. >> right, right. >> a lot of people have acid reflex now. did it. and and that's also going irritate the and cause dryness. so try to avoid things it's very acidic foods, fatty foods and a very carbonated high. the carbonated drinks as well as alcohol and something you can do. >> singing you say singing in the shower, actually, yes, saying it's great because you're going to be using those muscles. so they're not going to in to shrink. >> and and even in the shower, there's a lot of moisture. so there again, you're going to kate, the local courts, while
