>> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 7. >> good saturday morning. thanks for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news. i'm noelle bellow. it is february 5th. we are looking at the sun. that's about to start coming up here this morning. dave spahr has got a check of your weather forecast for the rest of the day. hey, good morning. well, good morning, everybody. just a little deck of cloud cover has kind of spewed on in here just a little bit overnight. that's how we'll start the day. but we want to finish up that way. here's the golden gate bridge a little bit of the ways. some fog kind of interrupting just a touch back to half moon bay. we get some water colors to start our day. so.

>> at least the clouds are kind of painting. some interesting skies going on here for us to see calm. start to the day. little chilly up there in the north bay still got the mid 30's in place to the east bay. we have some lower 40's hanging on a little bit. 36 for livermore again, the tri valley, the cold air drainage factor. we've got the 40's along the east bay shoreline. 39 freeman. 41 checking in this hour for san jose. comparison were actually a little ahead of the ball game in most locations, trailing just a touch. you can see in oakland going make up for this afternoon. here it is. again, just inconveniently timed. this thing came in 6 hours earlier. we clear out by this time. but get this thing. another about 6 hours to clear out it will be clearing from north to south throughout the day today. so reflecting all of that kind of variable clouds with afternoon clearing high temperatures still managing the lower 60's and we'll continue to improve upon that into next week. more in the forecast a bit. noel. thanks, dave. >> the california highway patrol is investigating after

a man was shot and killed while driving on. i-880, friday evening. chp responded to a crash in the northbound lanes of the interstate just north of the oak street exit. they say they found the man in the car with a gunshot wound. officials say after the man was shot, his car veered to the right and hit a guardrail. he was pronounced dead at the scene. police say there was no one else in that vehicle. 80 was shut down for about 5 hours with those northbound lanes. finally reopening just after 10 o'clock last night. if you have any information about that freeway shooting, you are asked to contact chp. well, incidents like this highway shooting renewed the call from the alameda county sheriff's office for surveillance cameras on our freeways. they've been calling for these for quite some time now. lieutenant ray kelly told us in a statement, quote, we do support freeway cameras in alameda county. we hope our

elected officials and community leaders will invest in technology for public safety. the sheriff's office made a similar statement last month after the shooting that killed sheriff's cadet david win, saying then it was time to take action before someone else was killed in a car to car shooting we did speak with oakland city council member dan kalb about this. here's some of what he had to say. >> surveillance cameras freeways would be responsibility of the state. that's that's completely chp jurisdiction. and if they want to do in the cameras are of a nature where they could actually help solve violent crimes. all the investigations for violent crimes open to getting that shot. we have to try something. i don't think surveillance cameras on freeways are going to be answer to solving all shootings or the violent crimes that may happen on freeways. but if they could be one of the and it's worth a try, let's let's see. it tried out and see how it works. and if it helps great, if not, then what will stop it?

>> surveillance cameras have proven useful in solving crimes before although this particular shooting wasn't on a freeway. cameras did help track down the suspects in the shooting death of kevin nishita. he was our former security guard who was fatally shot while on assignment with one of our kron, 4 reporters. meanwhile, oakland police are investigating a suspicious death after a man's body was found laying in the middle of the street. they say the man's body was found just after 09:00am yesterday on 79th avenue. the man was pronounced dead at the scene. if you have any information on this, you're asked to contact oakland police. to the north bay. now where a 3 story fire has caused $30,000 worth of damage up in santa rosa county. these are some pictures from santa rosa fire department. they say this fire happened yesterday at pullman lofts on wilson and 9th street department says they saw heavy smoke coming out of multiple

windows and doors on the first and second floor of this building. firefighters found flames in a hallway on the first floors. wow. no one was hurt. the fire department says this apartment building was under construction at the time of this fire. well, happening today, parents and teachers as well as students are going to be rallying in oakland against possible school closures. this effort to save the school's comes ahead of a vote that set for tuesday. kron four's camila barco joining us now with a little bit more detail on this coming a a parents and students have expressed their frustrations for ever since it was announced a couple weeks ago. yeah. well, now they're expressing their frustrations again today and another rally. >> teachers and families are going to continue to fight for the future of the schools. and they say that they're not only fighting to keep the schools open, but they also argue how the school closures could impact the communities in which the schools are in. and

like you said, no. well, this is all ahead of the school's board meeting on tuesday. that's when they will decide what schools they should close or merge in the next 2 years. they're considering up to 16 schools, but some people are upset because the schools on the chopping block predominantly serve black and brown communities. the oakland unified school district claims that they need to consolidate in order to survive and over 12 million dollar deficit. and that's due to decline in enrollment. and attendance. now funding is normally given to schools based on how many kids show up to class every day. but the pandemic has impacted the school's attendance record. the oakland city council president, along with 3 other city leaders are asking the state for help. they are requesting the district's get be eliminated and also to change on how funding is based on attendance. you know, can education association says that they see no positive outcome. if the schools were to close.

>> us to balance the budget on the backs of. our most impacted students and our black and brown communities. we have not yet seen. >> one school closure lead to better outcomes for students. >> school board members are considering to close or merge up to 16 schools. prescott elementary is on that list and that's why today's rally is going to be held at the school. it's located at 9.20, campbell street in oakland, as you can see right there. and the rally starts at 10:00am district 3 council member carol thief is also battling for the schools to stay open. she will lead to walk around the prescott neighborhood now known. well, in the next hour, we're going to hear clean air libby schaff and what she has to say is the best course for the schools. for now, back to you. alright, camila, thank you for that report. we'll check in with you in the next

>> the beijing 2022 winter olympics kicked off with the opening ceremonies at the beijing national stadium. it's the first venue to ever host an olympics opening ceremony twice. that's because beijing is now the first city to host both the summer and winter olympics. the games will run until february. 20th matt barnes has highlights from the opening ceremony. >> 14 years after hosting one of the most epic opening ceremonies ever. beijing welcome the world once again inside the iconic bird's nest russian president vladimir putin among the foreign dignitaries on hand a number of countries including the united states, decided to boycott these games diplomatically by not sending a representative to china much like 2000, 8, plenty of fireworks and flair in the opening ceremony with technology taking center stage the and led floor. the parade of nations coming soon after with 91 countries entering the national stadium, including

pretty calm stars. you can see it half moon bay. yeah, a little fog issues and whatever. give some time for the surface moisture kind of mix on out along with the clouds. that's the golden gate bridge shot. so here it is. the spoiler dropping in here. it could have done this overnight and gotten out of here by daybreak. but no, so it's going to be hanging around for the morning hours, clearing out from the north to the south throughout the day today. tomorrow looks great. great for tonight as well. so no major interference there. quite cooling overnight, though, into the mid 30's, you can see up to the north bay valais who about 39 inland on the east bay. we're still hanging on to some 40's. 36 for livermore and along the east bay shoreline, mid 40's. 41 for san jose palo alto about 37. so here it is. this goes pretty quickly here right around the lunchtime hour, 1 o'clock or so walk there. we have it pretty clear up in the north bay and just start to clear out in the east bay peninsula dropping in through as you can see, the south bay clear overnight tomorrow morning. little bit the way some central valley fog and a bit off towards the coast. we

take care of that after sunrise and it's off to the races with essential another mostly sunny day. temperatures still, you know, mild to warm but really warming up as we get into next week to you're going to forget with the calendar tells you for today. morning clouds mild. we got slow clearing in the south bay mid 60's going on to the inland tomorrow. it's warm and sunny, we've got the mid to upper 60's. we keep building on that for the next week. a flavor of spring minus those springtime showers and temperatures pushing too. yeah. in some inland spots, maybe the mid 70's right across into the 70's, probably by the middle of the week. for today we got 62 san francisco clearing out 64 for open. 66 meanwhile, for san jose, the wider geography after we just talked about next week. this is almost chilly. 69 going on for santa rosa mid 60's off to the east bay and again, it's afternoon clearing for a good chunk of the bay look at the longer range forecast, which is basically a warm-up for us coming up in a bit. well. >> thanks, dave. an update now

on the forty-niners fan who is in a coma after a fight at the nfc championship game at sofi stadium. a los angeles man is now out on bail, accused of pushing and punching daniel luna, friends and family of both the suspect and the victim are talking about the brief altercation that's now changed their lives forever. kron four's justine waldman has the story. >> he bonded out at 01:00am this morning on $30,000 bail. >> inglewood police have arrested this man. 33 year-old brian cifuentes in connection with sunday's assault on daniel luna outside of the nfc championship game at so fi stadium. and mayer says blurry 90 seconds. surveillance video helped police track down the suspect who turned himself in the mayor. maps out what happened in the parking lot during the tailgate, but is careful not to call the conflict an issue between forty-niners and rams fans. it looks like it began when luna

>> my patient was station way with that should come to that. and just like just like anybody you get tax can get that pick all if and or so, especially when you with your life. while there is disagreement from people who know the suspect and the victim on how this issue started. >> they do agree that a 5 second fight had devastating results. una remains hospitalized in a medically induced coma. the mayor says his condition has not gotten better or worse. next up, englewood police will present their case to the district attorney and the da will then decide whether or not to charge the suspect. i'm justine waldman, kron. 4 news. a 34 year-old man is facing homicide charges after police dug up a missing woman's body in his backyard. police say they performed a welfare check. >> for a 54 apds woman on monday when they didn't find her, they started a missing persons investigation. the next day, officers say they

found evidence near the victim's home leading them to believe that there was a violent crime. neighbors told officers they actually heard screaming in the area early saturday morning, but they didn't report it right away. police then detained 34 year-old micah dove let one of the victims neighbors after an initial search of dove, let's home investigators returned on wednesday and found the woman's body buried in his backyard. police say they will not be releasing the name of the victim to ensure the privacy of her family. stick with us. the kron 4 morning news continues after the break.

>> and now kron 4 sports. >> it's a family affair down in santa clara. the forty-niners are adding a new face to their staff was quite familiar with head coach kyle shanahan. several outlets are reporting that former chargers coach anthony lynn is joining the niners as an assistant lin played running back for the denver broncos under mike shanahan. kyle shanahan's father from 1997 to 99. kyle shanahan was a ball boy for the team. back then lin recently was dismissed from his role as the lions offensive coordinator. he's expected to be named as assistant head coach for the forty-niners working with the offense when reportedly has not yet signed a contract, though. with less than 2 weeks to go until spring training is supposed to get underway. major league baseball, the players association of hit another major road block in

>> exactly. 7.30, year on this saturday morning. welcome back to the kron. 4 morning news going to start off this half hour with a check of your forecast. dave sphar standing by. got a little bit of clouds today. debut say it's going to clear out the afternoon. yeah. looks pretty in the afternoon. and even the late morning hours up in portions of the north bay to its high thin clouds to look at the half moon bay, not too bad here. >> getting some sun curing in through some of this high cloudiness. but a look at the way some pace, the skies in spots going on. so here it is in totality. and there you can see the line up towards the north. this again dropping from north to south throughout the late morning hours into the afternoon. this a bit more

pessimistic. the computer puts up there. a lot more cloud cover as late as 2 o'clock. this supposed to be in contra costa county. but we'll still manage to see those lower well inland that looks like today decently a decent day today and tomorrow we will have the obstruction of cloud cover. still, we managed to get thode chilly temperatures overnight up in the north bay mid 30's at hand here. 48 san francisco in london, the east bay. we've got some lower 40's there. but in tri valley, 36, 39 for fremont. 41 meanwhile for san jose, not a lot of the way of winds. we did get that radiational cooling going on with the dry air. so for today, improving the sky conditions early clouds, san francisco, mild actually getting almost warm. 64 for oakland, 65 san jose reserve warm because that's what it's going to do in the seven-day forecast. your extended coming up in just a bit. noel. thanks, dave. >> to our coronavirus coverage now and big news out of the east bay. you no longer have to prove you're vaccinated against covid to enter

restaurants and gyms in contra costa county health officials made that announcement citing an 80% vaccination rate in the county. 48% of eligible people in contra costa have received their covid booster shots. they also say the omicron surge is likely peaked in the county and hospitalizations are beginning to decline. >> it's still a best practice, but we no longer think that the requirement it is necessary. we do think that many businesses will look at this and choose to continue to verify vaccine status because many of their customers or workers will feel safer. >> the change does not apply to places like health care facilities, nursing homes or any mega events that have 500 or more people in attendance. meanwhile, down in the south bay, san jose's covid booster mandate that all city owned venues has gone into effect. anyone attending or working an event hosted at venues like the sa peace center where the convention center must show proof of a booster shot. if

you're fully vaccinated, but not yet eligible for the booster, you can show a negative covid test. but it must have taken a day within the event. if it's an antigen test or 2 days, if it's a pcr tests, there is free covid testing available at the sep center. san jose is the first city in california to implement a booster mandate. meanwhile, sonoma county's ban on large gatherings is set to expire next week. but the tourism industry still struggling from lost revenue kron four's gayle ong has details. >> in january of a $65,000 and banquets that $65,000. gerard shaikh co-owner of sally tomatoes and events and boehner park lost after sonoma county issued a health order banning large gatherings indoors, all the bank, which canceled even those that were below 50 people. not because they illegal. >> but the health order people were scared. they were frightened.

>> judy che, one of dozens of business owners trying to make up for lost time. the health mandate is set to expire on february. 11th county health officers credit strict health orders in helping reduce county's covid case rate. claudia vecchio ceo of sonoma county tourism sent a survey to about 3,000 local businesses asking about the impact of the county's health order of those 60 respondents. we did find that the the immediate impact was somewhat north of 6 million dollars. and that really represents. >> business lost as it relates to groups that already booked and had to cancel. i and other people who have canceled in the future. but because of that order to noma county, health officials loosened the health order last month due to declining covid cases. >> but nothing changed for the larger tourism community. says the county's public health officer have been guiding local businesses to operate safely. but it's not just the loss in business that's challenging due to shea says trying to help employees

survive. these are people who are. >> are working 2 jobs and there's no relief. there is no, you know, there is no extra bonus, you know, for, you know, for unemployment and you know, we have a little one position. the hope is that this latest round of health orders that slow down progress will kind of get cleaned up over this spring and summer. robert isler, professor of economics at sonoma state university says it's going to be all about the dollars spent. so one of the things the trouble she's very concerned about. >> if there's a threat of this happening again, will people book as many weddings with a book as many events will be because many conferences and those are relatively large ticket items in terms of filling hotel rooms, filling restaurants, ordering catering and having sort of this, you know, ripple effect. >> among a bunch of different industries when one event takes place in the meantime, businesses are looking forward to next week's expiration date. we have valentine's day thankfully coming after this health mandate.

>> lipson. i think that's going to be good weekend in sonoma county. what better place to spend valentine's day then a lovely winery. >> gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> we now have to fully approved a covid vaccines. the cdc director, doctor rochelle walensky has signed off on a recommendation to approve the moderna vaccine for all adults. the shot received full approval from the fda earlier this week. more than 200 million doses of the moderna vaccine have already been administered in the united states. the pfizer vaccine you may remember, was approved fully for people 16 and older back in august. the cdc has also unveiled a new wastewater tracking system that gives communities across the united states. an early warning of rising covid infections in their area. water samples typically turn positive for covid 4 to 6 days before cases in any region start to climb data on the public dashboard show the number of sites that have detective covid in the

tuesday. kron 4 camila barco joining us live now with more details on this camila. >> yes, the teachers keep feeding families continue to rally to. as for the future of these schools, they see that they're not only fighting to keep the schools open, but they also argue that this could impact the communities in which the schools are and how this is all ahead. as the south, i said no. i'll of the school board meeting on tuesday where the board will decide which schools they should close or merge over the next 2 years. and they're considering up to 6 teams, schools. however, many people are upset because the schools are on the chopping block that predominately serve a black and brown communities. now the open unified school district claims a decline in enrollment and has led to a more than 12 million dollar deficit. and this is normally funding is given to schools based on how many kids show up to class every day. they say the

pandemic has played a role in impacting school. attending specter the oakland city council president, along with 3, other city leaders are asking the state for help and they are requesting the district get the eliminate it and also to change on how funding is based on attendance. now, the oakland education association sees no positive outcome. if the schools were closed. however, oakland mayor libby shaft has something else to say. i want to see more investment in students and not structures. >> the idea that money is being spent on building maintenance and potentially duplicative administrative structures is something that i think we all need to look into. >> now across country is one of the schools being considered to close. and that's why today's rally is going to be held at that school. it's located at 9.20, campbell street. it starts at

10:00am district, 3 council member carol feast. it's also rallying for the schools to stay open and she will lead the rock walk around the prescott neighborhood. now, also, these parents teachers are still fighting to keep the schools open. like we said, the school board meeting is taking scheduled to take place on tuesday. and by then we will know the fate of those 16 schools. for now, back to you, camila. thank you for that live report. we'll check in with you again in the next hour. other top stories this morning, the california highway patrol is investigating after a man was shot and killed while driving on i-880, friday evening. chp responded to a crash in the northbound lanes of the interstate. >> just north of the oak street exit. they say they found the man in the car with a gunshot wound. officials say after the man was shot, his car veered to the right and hit a guardrail. he was pronounced dead at the scene. police say there was no one else in the vehicle. 80 was

shut down the northbound lanes for about 5 hours. those lanes finally reopening just after 10 o'clock last night. if you have any information, you saw the shooting happened. you are asked to contact chp. incidents like that. one are renewing the call from the alameda county sheriff's office for surveillance cameras on our freeways, lieutenant ray kelly told us in a statement, quote, we do support freeway cameras in alameda county. we hope our elected officials and community leaders will invest in technology for public safety and quote, the sheriff's office made a similar statement last month after the shooting that killed sheriff's that david, when saying then it was time to take action before someone else was killed in a car to car shooting. we spoke with oakland city council member dan kalb about this. here's some of what he had to say. >> surveillance cameras freeways would be responsibility of the state. that's that's completely chp jurisdiction. and if they want to do in the cameras are of a nature where they could actually help solve violent

facing several charges. a second federal civil rights lawsuit was filed against the city of alameda and the officers involved in the death. 26 year-old mario gonzalez this time on behalf of gonzalez, his mother edith, our analysis claims the officers illegally and unjustifiably restrained her son at a park in alameda last april. she adds the officers failed to de-escalate a situation i which gonzales was not a threat in december. the alameda county coroner's office ruled mario's death a homicide stating drugs and the officers restraints contributed to his passing. a separate lawsuit has already been filed on behalf of mario's 5 year-old son mario junior. >> there is no disconnect between the family. in fact, you the family, unfortunately, is united in grief in outrage that their loved one has been taken from them. this is just purely a legal vehicle to present the claims of the mother.

were all rescued and flown to a safe location. the couple says this rescue came just in time as they were running out of food and supplies. to our coronavirus coverage this morning and big news out of the east bay. you no longer have to prove you're vaccinated against covid to enter restaurants and gyms in contra costa county health officials making that announcement citing an 80% vaccination rate across the county. they also say 48% of eligible people in contra costa have received their covid booster shots. they say the omicron surge has likely peaked in the county and hospitalizations are starting to decline. the change does not apply to places like health care facilities, nursing homes or make events with 500 or more people in attendance. down in the south bay, though, san jose's covid booster mandate at all city on venues has now gone into effect anyone attending or working an event hosted at venues like the sep center or

the convention center need to show proof of a booster shot. if you're fully vaccinated and you're not yet eligible for your booster, you can show a negative covid test. but it has to have been taken either within a day of the event. if it's an antigen test or 2 days, if it's a pcr test. there is free covid testing available at the sep center to make this a little easier. san jose is the first city in california to implement a booster mandate. up to the north bay. now where sonoma county's ban on large gatherings is set to expire next week. but the tourism industry is still struggling from lost revenue kron four's gayle ong has details. >> in january of a $65,000 in bank, which that $65,000. gerard, shaikh co-owner of sally tomatoes and events and boehner park lost after sonoma county issued a health order banning large gatherings indoors, all the bank, which canceled even those that were below 50 people. not because they illegal.

>> but the health order people were scared. they were frightened. >> judy che, one of dozens of business owners trying to make up for lost time. the health mandate is set to expire on february. 11th county health officers credit strict health orders in helping reduce county's covid case rate. claudia vecchio ceo of sonoma county tourism sent a survey to about 3,000 local businesses asking about the impact of the county's health order of those 60 respondents. we did find that the the immediate impact was somewhat north of 6 million dollars. and that really represents. >> business lost as it relates to groups that already booked and had to cancel. i and other people who have canceled in the future. but because of that order to noma county, health officials loosened the health order last month due to declining covid cases. >> but nothing changed for the larger tourism community. they says the county's public health officer have been guiding local businesses to operate safely. but it's not

just the loss in business that's challenging due to shea says trying to help employees survive. these are people who are. >> are working 2 jobs and there's no relief. there is no, you know, there is no extra bonus, you know, for, you know, for unemployment and you know, we have a little one position. the hope is that this latest round of health orders that slow down progress will kind of get cleaned up over this spring and summer. robert isler, professor of economics at sonoma state university says it's going to be all about the dollars spent. so one of the things the trouble she's very concerned about. >> if there's a threat of this happening again, will people book as many weddings with a book as many events will be because many conferences and those are relatively large ticket items in terms of filling hotel rooms, filling restaurants, ordering catering and having sort of this, you know, ripple effect. >> among a bunch of different industries when one event takes place in the meantime, businesses are looking forward to next week's expiration

guardrail. he was pronounced dead at the scene. police say there was no one else in his vehicle. 80 was shut down for about 5 hours with northbound lanes, reopening just after 10 o'clock last night. if you saw anything, you have any information about this shooting. you are asked to contact chp. now force incidents like this are renewing the call from the alameda county sheriff's office for surveillance cameras on our freeways, lieutenant ray kelly told us in a statement, quote, we do support freeway cameras and alameda county. we hope our elected officials and community leaders will invest in technology for public safety, end quote. the sheriff's office made a similar statement last month after the shooting that killed sheriff's cadet david win, saying that it was time to take action for someone else was killed in a car to car shooting. we spoke with oakland city council member dan kalb about this. here's some of what he had to say. >> surveillance cameras like freeways would be responsibility of the state. that's that's completely chp

at one of the schools. >> keep fight to keep them open. they argue that closing news buildings could impact the communities. >> in which the schools are acting like you said, no. while this is all head of the school board meeting on tuesday, the board, then we'll decide which schools they should close or merge over the next 2 years. and they're considering up to 16 schools. however, many people are upset because the schools on the chopping block predominantly serve black and brown communities. oakland school district leaders claim that a decline in enrollment and attendance has led to a more than 12 million dollar deficit. now funding is normally given to schools based on how many kids show up to class every day. but district leaders say the pandemic has played role in impacting a school attendance records. now the oakland city council president, along with 3 other city leaders are asking the state for help. they are requesting that the district's debt be eliminated

and also change on how funding is based on attendance. we spoke to council member carol fife. she's she says it's not the fault of the parents or teachers, but the administration. >> the financing and the mismanagement that occurs is by upper level staff that. i have no checks and balances on those positions. and so with the recurring changes in the state legislation, it our superintendent of schools more authority over our finances and we can't keep ending up in this position. i think there's something that we need to on it. that looks at what's actually happening with the schools because it is not the fault of the principals or the teachers for anyone else that the sites. >> council members also going to be at today's rally. she is fighting to keep the schools open she will be at prescott

yes, we'll see some 70's. well, that extended forecast for you. also the 4 zone as well. noel. >> thanks, dave. to our coronavirus coverage this morning and big news out of the east bay where you no longer have to prove you're vaccinated against covid to enter restaurants and gyms. but this is just in contra costa county health officials made this announcement citing an 80% vaccination rate in the county that they also say 48% of eligible people there have received their covid booster shots. they also say the omicron surge has likely peaked in the county. already that hospitalizations are beginning to decline. >> it's still a best practice, but we no longer think that the requirement it is we do think that many businesses will look at this and choose to continue to verify vaccine status because many of their customers or workers will feel safer. >> the change doesn't apply to places like health care facilities, nursing homes or any mega events where 500 or more people are in attendance.

up north in sonoma county, their ban on large gatherings is set to expire next week. but the tourism industry says they're still struggling from lost revenue. kron four's gayle ong has those details. >> in january of a $65,000 and banquets that $65,000. gerard shaikh co-owner of sally tomatoes and events and boehner park lost after sonoma county issued a health order banning large gatherings indoors, all the bank, which canceled even those that were below 50 people. not because they illegal. >> but the health order people were scared. they were frightened. >> judah, che, one of dozens of business owners trying to make up for lost time. the health mandate is set to expire on february. 11th county health officers credit strict health orders in helping reduce county's covid case rate. claudia vecchio ceo of sonoma county tourism sent a survey to about 3,000 local businesses asking about the

and those temperatures has been slow going in spots number, we have 30's. we first talked to at 7 o'clock up in the north and the east bay. they graduated up to the 40's. now 50 per antioch. 47 oakland, 40's 9 for san francisco. 47 meanwhile for san jose checking the next couple of days out up to tahoe. same thing. there are lots of sunshine. temperatures going to about 50 or so monday tuesday, slight pullback, but will 4 turn again to have some mild warming towards the end of the week's a little bit of melting is expected for this. we can anything upstream helping us out waiting and waiting a little plume moisture comes in from the south, but that's about it will give us some cloud cover into the following weekend. we're going to warm up real nicely, though, before we get there. 4 zone forecast covering you this saturday. we're coming in at 62. san francisco also mirroring that along the coast and along the peninsula, bayside down to the south. 64 foster city and also palo alto nearing that for the south bay 65 milpitas. 66 san jose, also santa clara and cupertino. it 65 mid 60's on

the community was prepared and that preparation paid off dennis shanahan share some important lessons learned as we look ahead to the summer. >> breaking news out of el dorado county tonight where the caldor fire is still burning out of control. >> from an overlook off highway 50 residents of pollack, pines watched helplessly last august as the caldor fire came within a couple miles of their evacuated town. everybody just all at the same time tried to get trying to get out. >> firefighters say at this point they have no containment. sherry son, brother and your neighbors had reason to be afraid at that time. the fire had just destroyed hundreds of homes nearby in grizzly flats. >> but the flames never reached pollack, pines evidence that a project years in the making did exactly what it was designed to do. the fire really had stopped its progression here we met up with mark egbert in a forest

just south of pollack, pines near slight part and the district manager for the eldorado in the georgetown divide resource conservation districts. the resource conservation district advise, landowners and public agencies bringing all parties to the table. leadership from cal fire in the forest service and other entities like pacific industries, eldorado irrigation district, the county of eldorado. >> i'm really came together, sat down at a table and said how are we going to align our priorities, how we're going to share resources and how we're going to get some tangible work done on the ground because we can't afford to keep losing these >> with the help of state and federal grants, they put together a plan called fire, adapted 50 working to make the communities along highway 50 more resistant to wildfires over the last few years. they did out 10,000 acres of forest trees grow every day. and if you don't you're going to have too much fuel. my son's

forrester. jim davies is a contractor on this project enforced really go. it's called the fuels treatment. so what we did we came in, we took out the smaller trees to claim a lazy trees and left the larger trees. so that helps increase the force resiliency to >> drought. climate change effects of wildfire and other things that affect the overall health and condition of the forced. >> this is where the fire adapted 50 project was put to the test during the caldor fire fire fighting crews from calfire news for service knew the fired up to 50 project. darien footprint was here. so that enabled firefighting crews to access the area and put a firefighting tools such as back burning on the ground here. >> and that back burning operation is what actually intercepted with the outdoor fire itself. this is an area of untreated forest, densely wooded, combustible material, these low hanging branches. these are the latter. feels fire can race up to the top of

the trees in an area like this. >> this is an area that's been thinned much less combustible material here. and you can see the fire scorched these trees, but it did not get up into the canopy. >> the same stadium had been left like that piece across the property line there. it would have torched all these trees and burn them to death that this be black skeletons left here. if you want a mormon emigrant trail, you'll see miles and miles and miles of what's going to. >> there's no way you could put firefighting crews in there. all right, to stop the fire. so these strategically placed feels treatments are positioned in a way where they're adjacent communities adjacent to values like the water infrastructure systems that we have here. and it gives us a chance then to come up to it and and headed off. >> diana swartz is a cal fire public information officer actually quite proud of this. this project of the fired up to 50. it's the balance, right? we don't want to take
