>> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 7. >> and good morning and thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 morning news. i'm theresa it is saturday march 12 that we have a lot to get to this morning. but let's start with getting a look outside at the weather. and if you've noticed, it is incredibly incredibly foggy. but to get the latest facts, we've got dave spahr that is going to tell us all about high day. >> okay. good morning, teresa. good morning, everybody. and good news to report actually on that front, we started things off just 3 minutes ago with a dense fog advisory that's now been canceled. so

we go now go into just taking care of some of the bay area fog that we're kind of used to a little bit. this is what you can see the golden gate bridge all socked in here. get this a few hours. kind of mix out for all that. least the advisory zone has been lifted. meanwhile, there's the layer you can see right across the bay, very thin layer at that. so it's that typical inversion. we get some daytime heating. we get the atmosphere mixing out. and so what? but going upstream, though, it looks like some showers coming our way. i just want to show you real quickly up here, the north bay, you'll probably around point raise and a little bit of some of the valleys might have to deal with a couple of hours of fog temperature. check real quick. 32 santa rosa. elsewhere across the bay, we do have some 30's going on, but chile because the clear skies, 40's cover good chunk of the bay at this hour. temperature change for were trailing a few degrees in some spots or just on the nose. you can see off to the east bay. so it's a little chilly this morning in some locations stormtracker for what's going on upstream. that's our opportunity for a few widely scattered showers

for tonight. leftover clouds for your sunday. so enjoy the sunshine. i got all the sunshine's up here until about 2 o'clock. but already by 2 in san francisco, the peninsula, you'll start to see some and the way of the scattered clouds developing for the arrival of rain, we've got a better shot for rain early next week. we'll get into that. coming up. theresa. >> thank you for that. well, we start this morning with the body of an unidentified child that was found under said may actually be a missing girl. that is from the bay area police say that they have been looking for 8 year-old sophia mason since tuesday. sophia's mother, samantha johnson, was arrested thursday night on several charges in both of these incidences, the missing child in the body found him or sent home are now part of a bigger investigation. kate phillips has the latest for us. >> we're said police have cleared the scene now, but this the home behind me is where the say a body of a girl was found. now earlier this week, police in hayward

arrested a mother who has a missing daughter. and they say that that mother is connected to an address over here on this street. they alternately got a search warrant and searched the house for said police did confirm with us. the woman arrested smith johnson is the mother of missing 8 year-old sophia mason. she was taken into custody and is now in the santa rita jail and ada county on unrelated charges. police have not released the identity of the child found or the age just that that child was a girl. both of these incidents, the missing child in the body found in this moore said home are now being actively investigated. but police have not officially said if there's connection between the rest of the woman in hayward and the body of the unidentified child found in the home or said police say a word or s led them here. soviet was last seen him or said on february 10th. the view is grand mother told police that she and her mother frequent areas or said hayward in cities in southern california. we asked police how long the body was in this

house and they said they could not answer that at this time. reporting are sad. i'm kathryn philips. >> well, the fbi in the pleasant hill police department is asking for your help to try and find a teen has been missing since january 15 year-old brandon abbott went missing from his home in pleasant hill on sunday, january. 16th. he's not been seen or heard from since abbott is described as 5, 6, weighing about 207 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes and he wears braces. if you recognize him or have any information you are asked to contact your local police department or the san francisco division of the fbi. and turning now to the latest developments in ukraine, a senior russian diplomat is warning that moscow could start targeting western weapon shipments. the diplomat says that russia considers the u.s. s decision to orchestrate the shipments as a dangerous move. they say that the action itself makes a shipments, a

target. this coming as russian ground ground forces close in on kyiv. britain's defense ministry says that russia is about 15 miles away from the center of the capital city. they say that daily intelligence briefings suggests that the russian military is trying to encircle the capital. and back here at home organizations and san francisco are trying to raise thousands of dollars for refugees fleeing ukraine. they're hosting a free benefit concert today featuring dozens of performers in golden gate park and kron four's. camila barco is live in the newsroom with more on that for us. hi, camilla. good morning to recess together is going to be musical performance of point tree and even ukrainian dancers at this concert. >> and while there's going to be some entertainment organizers say that this is just another way to support the people in ukraine because they are going to be raising money. now you're taking a look at a protest that have happened here across the bay area in the last few weeks. the country has turned into a

war zone as russian forces have fired fired missiles across the country, killing thousands. united nation officials say that as of friday, more than 2.5 million people have been forced flee the country. the majority of them are women and children. and 2 million other people are also displaced out of their home. now today's concert is going to be raising money for world central kitchen. organizers say that this money is going to food relief for people who are in ukraine or in the borders of ukraine, flame. >> yourself as a mother carrying your children and your possessions suddenly displaced a hot and well prepared meal is what this money will buy. those people a moment of hope what's going to be a very long journey. >> now the benefit concert starts at noon and goes until 04:00pm. here is a list of the details of today's event will be held at golden gate park at the music concourse. just look for the ferris wheel at the

park. the concert is free, but organizers say that people can donate to the cause online. you can go to s f for ukraine dot org kits on your screen right there. and theresa organizers will also be passing out 500 sunflowers organizers say that this is the country's national flower. and lately it's been a symbolism of hope and resistance. back to you. camila. thank you for that. what coming up on kron 4 morning news, california bay area cities dropping. >> covid-19 mandates. why people say it is a signal for a return to normal. plus, someone used a tractor really to try and steal an atm. why police say that a robbery like this is extremely risky and how trained they are still recovering from that train crash in san bruno will tell you what investigators are learning. caltrain service is

still seeing impacts after a train crashed into work equipment on the tracks. and there are still. >> many unanswered questions about how this all happened. kron four's justin campbell has the latest from the scene. at a press conference friday afternoon. and ntsb spokesperson. >> says the southbound caltrain was going 60 miles per hour when it collided with 3 construction vehicles. fortunately they were able to get out of the way because if anybody hits stay there. >> they would not have

survived. bruce landsberg with the ntsb says the train engineer blew the horn, applied full braking pressure before slamming into the construction vehicles that were working on an electrical project. >> altogether, 13 people were injured with non-life-threatening injuries. i was horrible. i for he wasn't on the train, but his girlfriend was and got out safely. the ntsb says a safety mechanism designed to prevent these type of accidents called positive train control was on but didn't work. >> the answer is we don't know yet, but i can guarantee you we will find out. >> there's a lot we need to understand about what happened here and what went wrong. just so we can ensure that put policies in place that it does not happen again. >> ntsb spokesperson goes on to say it will take 12 to 18, wants to get a final report today. have a cause on exactly

dave spahr to give us some more facts and figures in regards to itthink it's supposed to warm up or is it supposed to get cold, which one? it will actually warm up a little bit. but we also have a couple opportunities for some showers and here, the better one is upstream here. but there is something we have to mention for the overnight. >> there is that shot. we still have some leftover fog, but the advisory has now been lifted. that did only cover the coast in san francisco, but you still have some pockets of fog to kind of keep in mind as you start your early day out and about. so what are we talking about its upstream? this line of cloud cover. yep. this is our future overnight and kind of lingering a little bit into tomorrow afternoon 2. so we'll be fighting the clouds much more so tomorrow afternoon, we will for today. temperature check, beat the gloves again this morning. 32 of the santa rosa. 33 for napa. 34 for novato off to the east bay got a hodgepodge of 30's and 40's at work here. 44 meanwhile, san jose, let's hand it over to future cast for lots of sunshine going on this morning and a good chunk of the afternoon. but into the late afternoon evening, here comes

the cloud cover shower opportunity. that's up north. let the over the tour a little bit into overnight. as you can see, this is where opportunity for a few stray showers working their magic tomorrow morning might have some wet roads a little bit here to deal with. and still some leftover clouds. it looks like that will linger into the afternoon and a bit on monday morning with better clearing in the afternoon to have the onshore winds. they seem to pop a little bit off to the east bay associated with all this traffic. we're talking about parking is straight off to the delta. you might have some of that. some of the valleys up in the north bay a bit. but pronounced it looks like on sunday, but the direction still remains on shore. that's a cooling effect anyway. so we'll be cool down a little bit by all of this. a little shower opportunities so forth. not a big deal. it's the second hit. we're really watching as we get later in the forecast. sunny, early variable clouds will throw in there for the late afternoon. scattered showers overnight tomorrow, a few early clouds. there's a few early showers will keep variable clouds still in there. cool, though, mid 60's for highs because we're going to do a little better than that today. but

upstream starts to interesting monday. some variable clouds tuesday, another rain opportunity that looks like pretty good coverage, too wednesday through friday. it's clearing out sun and clouds mixture and back to the business of the 70's again today. 61, san francisco. 64 for oakland. 71 san jose will call that kind of evening clouds. but again, most of the early part of the day will be sunshine with those clouds kind of rolling on in the late afternoon water geography shows a couple areas will pop into the lower 70's such as san jose and antioch coming up in a bit. of course, we'll have the 4 zone forecast for you and also check that extended to teresa. thank you very much, dave. well, it's been 2 years since the world health organization officially declared the covid-19 pandemic. >> at that time, the virus and spread to more than 100 countries. more than 4,000 people have died. now, 2 years later, johns hopkins university officials saying that there has been 450 million covid cases worldwide. 6 million people have died. happening today in

california. schools throughout the state are lifting their indoor mask mandate. the state will instead recommend wearing masks in schools instead of requiring them. but students and staff will still have to mask up while riding public transit. governor gavin newsom says that he's making the decision to drop the mandate because of declining covid-19 numbers and hospitalization rates. well, students in oakland, though, are going to have to keep wearing their masks in classrooms through april. 15th, the oakland unified school district saying that it is keeping the mandate in place because they are concerned about a potential surge after spring break, the mandate applies to all students, staff contractors, volunteers and visitors. the district will also be handing out rapid at-home covid test kits before spring break. well, you can leave your vaccination card at home. next time you go out in san francisco on friday, the city dropped its requirement for people to show proof of

vaccination or a negative test. kron four's amanda hari was at balboa cafe. that's in the marina district to get some reaction. >> everyone i spoke to said they're excited to see the drop of another mandate and that was reflected by all the people that turned out. you can see them all behind me here. the manager even told me they had their biggest friday lunch rush of the year. end of that, you're ready. >> at the elbow, a cafe in the marina district staff was removing proof of vaccination sites, proof of vaccination or a negative test is no longer required in restaurants, bars or gyms in san francisco. it is a burden off our shoulders is an extra step that came to. >> got added to our duties in, though we're happy to protect to the community. it's kind of nice to have some normalcy back here about, well, a elbow, a cafe manager, sam stein says this change may even convince more people to frequent the restaurant. there are definitely people who just

didn't want to deal with the hassle of remembering where that picture on your phone was getting the app, etcetera. customers were able to walk through the doors and to their tables without showing any documents. nicole garlic was having dinner at the restaurant. she says she's happy to see another mandate dropped. it's exciting and happy. but this is lift that, you know, just save me from the hassle. i'm i am vaccinated. but, you know, just not having to deal with the have good. according to the city website, 83% of san franciscans have completed the vaccine series. >> cameron johnson says this endemic stage is starting to make life feel more normal feels good because i just get on the car right now and i forgot my mask. so it does get to go to come. not a mask for sure, but he says he will continue to be careful. still definitely like prioritizing like. my hope is that like watching my hands and everything, but just a few should already be doing. you you still need to show proof of vaccination or a negative

test at large scale events that have more than 1000 people and any business can choose to enforce those rules as well. in san francisco, amanda hari kron, 4 the city of berkeley is following suit. no longer will require proof of vaccination or a negative covid test to enter restaurants, bars or gyms. >> that's due to the high vaccination rate in covid cases and hospitalization rates dropping. >> businesses in the city of berkeley can decide if they want to keep the mandate or not. berkeley's health department still recommends wearing a mask at these places. still ahead on kron 4 morning news at county has to pay millions of dollars because of the deadly shooting of tyrell wilson. why his father says settling a lawsuit for his son is a step in the right direction. >> african students playing from ukraine say that they face discrimination when trying to escape the country. one student telling kron 4 about what happened. tried to board a train leaving came.

the family of tyrell wilson. one year ago, wilson was shot and killed by a former danville police officer andrew hall hall is now a convicted felon. last he was was sentenced to 6 years in state prison on a felony assault. and this was on connected to the deadly shooting of another man in danville. kron falls. felipe juggle has reaction from wilson's father. >> justice doesn't move swiftly. unfortunately. still 3 days after his son, tyrell wilson would have turned 34 years old. marvin wilson says reaching a settlement with contra costa county and the family's civil rights lawsuit is a positive step. i have to be his force. i have to be as advocate. to speak for the injustice that happened to marvin and family attorney john burris confirmed they reached a 4.5 million dollar settlement with the county thursday. this after alleging former danville police officer and contra costa county

sheriff's deputy andrew hall wrongfully shot. nice him to death march. 11th last year, the family's attorneys have argued that despite him holding a knife at the time of the shooting. >> wilson did not charge at hall and was in the middle of a mental health want to get this so quickly. they don't want to wait. >> 2 year after because you know what, now they're going to be held to a higher standard or on out. >> payout. but it's not about us. the payout is not about the money to spot white him last week, cole was sentenced to 6 years in state prison for the november 2018 shooting death. >> it's 33 year-old latimer arboleda. >> he was terminated from the sheriff's office immediately after a jury found hall guilty of assault with a firearm and inflicting great bodily injury. when arboleda like hall was in the midst of a mental breakdown. the arboleda family also settled with the

>> and welcome back on this saturday. 7.30, and you are watching kron 4 morning news. let's start right now with a you can see the look over there with the golden gate bridge. but today forecast with dave spahr is joining us right now to tell us a little bit about what we can expect on the saturday. >> hey, good morning, theresa. good morning, everybody. as you can see, the fog is trying to lift a little bit from the golden gate, still kind of socked in a little bit of the east bay shoreline can't get a clear view from this vantage point to the but a couple of hours, this will mix out what we're looking for upstream. there was a bigger change are happening tonight. some scattered showers in the forecast in this line of cloud cover. you see this will linger a little bit into your sunday and will be a little temperature reduction. but

we're not looking for much out of this. first one. it's one upstream we're hoping on into tuesday. 61. it looks like by 11 by 2 with 67. by that time, though, you'll probably start to see some cloud cover development in the north bay, san francisco in a little bit into the peninsula. temperature check for you. still those chilly 30's up in the north bay. 42 san francisco. 48 off to antioch. a cool 36 for livermore too. and 44 coming in for san jose today. 61 san francisco. 64 for oakland. 71 san jose. now coming up a little bit here, we'll take a look at the longer range forecast models for you that 4 zone and also the extended to teresa de. thank you for that. among the people trying to flee the violence of war are african students in ukraine. >> now some of them saying that they are experiencing racism and discrimination at the border. >> and bay area, political leaders are speaking out about the situation. kron four's. has he doing has the story for us >> house on not crossing the

>> how is it that you cried for news? >> the state department is warning american citizens against traveling to join the fight in ukraine. this after the ukrainian embassy in washington reported about 6,000 inquiries mostly from americans. department officials say that it is very challenging to vet many of the applicants and about half are rejected immediately because of age, lack of experience or criminal record, adding that in addition to their personal risk, american citizens risk. you asked national security by entering ukraine and becoming targets. well, back here, home brentwood police are searching for person who tried to steal an atm. police say that the person used a stolen tractor to rip the wells fargo atm from a wall. businesses nearby say that they suffered a lot of damage. crews have been working throughout the day to try and make some repairs, as you can imagine, kron four's rob nest. but reports on how locals are reacting to the

crime and what police are asking from the public. >> the suspect got away with the atm that was here just before 05:00am before businesses were open here at this brentwood shopping plaza. no one was around. so police say no injuries occurred. the locals were surprised to hear about the crime. broken glass. a rip taunting stolen atm. also, i was shocked that the damage was obvious around this wells fargo atm location friday morning. >> brentwood police say it started when the suspect stole from a construction site west of highway 4. >> i had taken 3. tractor commonly referred to as a tele hand or someone that has the a forklift on the front. police say the suspect used a tractor to rip the atm from the wall in an attempt to get away with the money inside. we've actually recovered the approximately 200 >> grad nick says the atm was compromised but isn't sure if any money was stolen. police found the stolen tractor in an

>> some good news for those who loved to embrace winter sports in the sierra have le ski resort and kirkwood will be expanding their season. it macy mom because there's not been a lot of snow lately, but thanks to that. when fall in december and some other smaller storms. the resorts are able to keep the lifts going. and that is incredible news for those who love cash in on some spring skiing in the sierra. >> it's not uncommon for for sierra snowpack to last that long and we were excited that this season so far been, you know, we that record snow storms december. is that what set us up for this? so we just can't people guess this late in the spring spring schemes and i was so great. you know, it's really kind an iconic part of our season, something that our community looks for.

44 meanwhile, for san jose on the big map, this is what we're talking about. basically time overnight for us to good timing on that. it's mild today. notice will be a little cooler on the other side of all of that, noting the winds on shore, they are little pop happens here. so solano county and off to the east bay. you'll feel that little pop here late this afternoon into the overnight and then by tomorrow, we're left with a little bit of an on shore breeze at that will be a nice recovery into our next system. gets here tuesday, which will protect the field the overnights wednesday morning. a bit on the chilly side. okay. so let's do this. that's overnight. this is what we're watching upstream on tuesday morning. so be monday night tuesday affair pretty nicely time there over your tuesday morning commute by bill. but by on the wet side, there we take a breather. just about all week. interesting on thursday, we're going to keep this dry for now. we have to have some amendments later on and then a pretty good substantial hit happens here next weekend. so there's some traffic upstream to look forward to. hopefully we'll get something out of that action. 4 zone forecast for

not to mention the trials of even growing up have an incredible to a box of coping mechanisms and advice and that they need to share with the world. they're absolutely incredible. and we said and these really need to share their joy. and there was done with the world right now, especially with that being as dark as it is right now. and it is certainly very dark with so many issues. and i. >> you know, didn't even mention ukraine and what we're saying that catastrophe over there. so how does the program work? let's say, for example, i get off the morning news here and i need a little pep talk because, you know, i got up so early. so how does it work? >> well, and there's 2 elements to it. there's some some flyers that we have all over town. and the our home town of healdsburg and they the kids made motivational flowers, flyers with little

tear off steps some. maybe it says hope for you. and there's a little tear off steps say hope on the bottom. you can tear one of those off and put it in your and then the other element is the hotline. and you can call that hotline and listen to the kids. voices giving you pep talks and words of wisdom and it's absolutely adorable and also incredibly profoundly moving as well to to hear these kids. we've been hearing from people all over the just saying how it has really made their day. and we were getting over and 11,000 calls an hour last i just got word that are hotline. the current number crashed. and we have a backup number. would you like share it with you? you know, will put that up on kron 4 dot com so that people can, you know, take the time to go and write down the

number. >> but it in the meantime, i mean, tell me some of the words that the kids say. i mean, you know, empathy is something that we try and strives parents to tell our kids in that kind of stuff. but actually watching them in action is really quite even veteran. it kind of is a full circle right? you know, when we presented this project to the kids, the only product that we gave them really. that was imagine think of a where something it was just a hard time for you. and someone gave you some advice or something. but you figure it out on your own. what what would you like to share with the world and everything that they say on the hot lines completely unprompted. these are things that come from their own life experience. that some say things, you know, the kindergarten, for example, they decided to say something altogether. and the work together to decide. and they

incidents. the missing child in the body found in them are sent home are now part of a bigger investigation. kate phillips has the latest for us. >> said police have cleared the scene now, but this home behind me is where the say a body of a girl was found. now earlier this week, police in hayward are arrested. a mother who has a missing daughter and they say that that mother is connected to an address over here on this street. they ultimately got a search warrant and searched the house for said police did confirm with us. the woman arrested smith johnson is the mother of missing 8 year-old sophia mason. she was taken into custody and is now in the santa rita jail and ada county on unrelated charges. police have not released the identity of the child found or the age just that that child was a girl. both of these incidents, the missing child in the body found in this moore said home are now being actively investigated. but police have not officially said if there's connection between the rest of the woman in hayward and the

retroactively prevented court from capping campus enrollment. thus wiping out an existing court order which would have prevented uc berkeley from admitting several 1000 additional undergrads this fall. we did not feel that we should penalize those poor 5,000. >> a 5,000 students working to get admissions letters just because of this court case. the bill's author, san francisco assemblyman phil ting calls that court order draconian the legislature and the governor have been really pushing uc csu in the community colleges to increase enrollment because we have a 2 million. 2 greece shortfall for the long term. and the only way we're going to close that gap, is it universities like berkeley can increase enrollment in, especially pushing them increased enrollment for california's teens says the bill would also require universities to add staff and faculty alongside students when projecting future enrollment in a long-range development plan. >> it would also allow an institution 18 months to

correct a plan if a judge rules, that plan is incomplete. so that's very critical. burke was never offered that remedy by the court. in a statement uc berkeley says we appreciate the efforts of state leaders to seek a legislative solution. but for some this bill fall short, the legislature in their hurry to try to accommodate. >> you see, i'm maybe i'm making things worse. instead of better fullback avoid with the group's a berkeley neighborhoods brought forward. the initial lawsuit that led to the court ordered enrollment cap. he says the university has been a bad neighbor and has consistently increased enrollment without having enough housing. he says the spill makes a bad situation worse. we've with 3,000 more students than we had in 2020. and all of the students are going to be trying to find housing in berkeley and it's going to displace even more. >> well into ranch. then we've displaced and the pass the senate and assembly budget committee will review the bill

and staff will still have to mask up while riding any kind of public transit. governor gavin newsom says that he made the decision to drop ihe mandate because of declining covid-19 case numbers and hospitalization rates. but students in oakland they are going to have to keep wearing their masks in classrooms through april. 15th, the oakland unified school district is saying that it is keeping the mandate in place because they are concerned about a potential surge after spring break, the mandate applies to all students, staff contractors, volunteers and visitors. the district will also be handing out rapid at-home covid test kits before spring break. well, still ahead on kron 4 morning news, los angeles is getting ready for the critics choice awards. and we'll have you some information about what to expect right after the break.

welcome back to kron. 4 morning news that start this half hour with a look at the forecast today. spar in the weather center with the very latest. it's going to get chilly right? >> it took little chilly to. yeah. we're waiting for a couple of bouts of some rain showers. good morning, theresa. good morning, everybody. and early on, we're still dealing with some of this fog in the east bay shore long as you can see, although it's clearing up a nicely well inland and elsewhere is the fog starts to the park here now, upstream. we'll see some scattered clouds develop. that's from this line. you see here and some cooler temperatures on the backside of that. some your sunday won't be as warm as today and will probably see more in the way those variable clouds working their magic to. here's the breakdown for you today. 65 at high noon by 3. we're at 66 in some inland spots will still manage to get near at about 70 or so current checking the temperatures were 37 up to santa rosa 40's over most of the real estate. but a couple pockets of 50's here in their 50 for hayward. and 55 for antioch, half moon bay just wanted to jump up to 41

>> dave spahr is here with our forecasts. it's a went 8.44. >> and 40's 8 seconds morning, teresa. good morning or a beautiful picture behind you there, too. as you can see, a nice view of the bay. we're taking care of some of this fog in the east bay shoreline. how about that? so we go into a mostly sunny morning by the afternoon, though, some scattered clouds are working to the forecast as well when it's in the upper tahoe. real quick because this we're looking for the next few days by tomorrow. already some variable clouds kind of left over will do the same thing on this is kind of more of a bonanza, although i'm lookiog at the timing of this, it looks to be pushed a little bit to monday night, but that's ok as long as we get it, the timing may push off and peel off of tuesday a little bit as we go forward temperature check for we have 37 stop the santa rosa. most of the geography is in the 40's. we've got 50 for hayward. 55, meanwhile, for antioch. so the big high pressure kind of protecting us a little today, kind of mild, but upstream, the system will drop south and has a few showers. but the bigger issue

investigation. and kate phillips has the latest for us. >> we're said police have cleared the scene now, but this the home behind me is where the say a body of a girl was found. now earlier this week, police in hayward are arrested. a mother who has a missing daughter. and they say that that mother is connected to an address over here on this street. they ultimately got a search warrant and searched the house for said police did confirm with us. the woman arrested smith johnson is the mother of missing 8 year-old sophia mason. she was taken into custody and he's now in the santa rita jail and ada county on unrelated charges. police have not released the identity of the child found or the age just that that child was a girl. both of these incidents, the missing child in the body found in this summer said home are now being actively investigated. but police have not officially said if there's connection between the rest of the woman in hayward and the body of the unidentified child found in the home or said police say a word or s led

the state are going to be lifting their indoor mask mandate. the state will instead recommend wearing masks in schools instead of requiring them. but students and staff will still have to mask. couple riding public transit. governor gavin newsom saying that he madk the decision to drop the mandate because of declining covid-19 cases and hospitalization rates. students in oakland will, though, have to keep wearing their masks in classrooms through april. 15th, the oakland unified school district says that it is keeping the mandate in place because they are concerned about a potential surge after the spring break, the mandate applies to all students, staff contractors, volunteers and visitors. the district will also be handing out rapid at-home covid test kits before spring break. you can leave your vaccination card at home. next time you go out in san francisco on friday, the city dropped its requirement for people to show proof of vaccination or a

negative test. kron four's amanda hari was at balboa cafe in the marina district getting some reaction for us. everyone i spoke to said they're excited to see the drop of another mandate and that was reflected by all the people that turned out. you can see them all behind me here. the manager even told me they had their biggest friday lunch rush of the year, that you're ready. >> at the elbow, a cafe in the marina district staff was removing proof of vaccination sites, proof of vaccination or a negative test is no longer required in restaurants, bars or gyms in san francisco. it is a burden off our shoulders is an extra step that came to. >> got added to our duties in, though we're happy to protect to the community. it's kind of nice to have some normalcy back here about, well, a elbow, a cafe manager, sam stein says this change may even convince more people to frequent the restaurant. there are definitely people who just didn't want to deal with the

berkeley from admitting several 1000 additional undergrads this fall. we did not feel that we should penalize those poor 5,000. >> a 5,000 students working to get admissions letters just because of this work is the bill's author, san francisco assemblyman phil ting calls that court order draconian the legislature and the governor have been really pushing. >> uc csu in the community colleges to increase enrollment because we have a 2 million. >> 2 greece shortfall for the long term. and the only way we're going to close that gap, is it universities like berkeley can increase enrollment in, especially pushing them increased enrollment for california's teens says the bill would also require universities to add staff and faculty alongside students when projecting future enrollment in a long-range development plan. >> it would also allow an institution 18 months to correct a plan if a judge rules, that plan is incomplete. so that's very critical. >> burke was never offered that remedy by the court.

in the video, jean king was doing a live report in los angeles when they hit and run happens just a few feet away. he's okay. his partner behind the camera is okay as well. kang was covering a story about a father who pushed his family out of harm's way in a deadly hit and run accident. that happened late last month on the same street in south los angeles. officials say that car crashes have doubled in that area since the pandemic started. well, with gas prices at record highs across the country and an increasing number of governors and state lawmakers. well, they're calling for the suspension of gas taxes. there are also calls for a gas attack tax holiday at the federal level. our washington correspondent reshad hudson has more. >> as gas prices continue to rise their bills in both the house and senate that would suspend the federal gas tax until the end of the year. ohio congresswoman joyce beatty says working class people need some type of
