school in oakland. garcia was expected to sing at her school's upcoming cinco mayo celebration. sacramento police say garcia was reported missing on the 15th. she was killed 2 days later. according to the hanford sentinel newspaper in the central valley, garcia was also reported missing a few years ago. back in august of 2019, police say garcia was still alive when she was found in a sacramento apartment building. it's just a few blocks away from the state capitol. they say responding officers were unable to save her life. the coroner confirmed her identity yesterday. now in a statement to the crowd for the oakland unified school district spokesperson described garcia as, quote, a bright light at castle mont whose natural

talents were obvious to those around her. the fact that she passed away that the way that she did, it's another tragic example of our country scourge of gun violence, which must come to an end. now we're still working to get more information about the circumstances surrounding garcia's death will bring you the latest details as they become available. now there's a new push in the search for a missing oakley woman. alexis gabe was last seen january. 26 near antioch, friends, family and volunteers have been combing the area for any sign of her. they'll be out again this weekend looking for this search will be different because they are extending their search to include private property. local farmers, ranchers and other people with access to various buildings and sheds are being asked to check their propertye anyone with information is asked to contact oakley police. now want to click. police are looking for 16

year-old giovanni martinez. this is a picture of him. they say he was last seen thursday morning around 7.45. in the area of contra costa and taylor boulevard. police say he was wearing a black adidas jacket and pants and white air force once he's 5 foot 5 and weighs 120 pounds. if you have any information you can call walnut creek police. turning now to another big story we're following them or said police department is now offering a $3,000 reward to find the man believed to be sophia mason scheller the 8 year-old from hayward was found dead 2 weeks ago in merced county. now the search is on for the boyfriend of sophia's mother, dante jackson, who is believed to be here in the bay area. kron four's amanda hari talk to sofia's cousin about the fact that jackson is still on the run.

>> voice has been silenced too soon. and now it's another day of wondering for sophia mason family about exactly how the little girl died. it's like it's unbelievable. feels like i'm living in a 4 story that keeps unfolding. the 8 year-old body was found in merced said county in early march. >> her mother, samantha johnson, led police to the body inside her boyfriend's home. the merced said police department is now offering a $3,000 reward for the man dante jackson. we want justice to be served and he's like the other part of the puzzle. there you have some and that in custody, which is great. but >> we need dante to be there to to be as cousin melanie. real audi says she's grateful to see police offering the reward anything that can help, you know, maybe motivate somebody who has seen him who has heard from him or maybe know somebody who knows at this is a photo of jackson. he's described as a 5.11, 220 pound man with black hair and brown for lot. he says someone

>> more than a dozen people are without a home this morning after a fire damaged 10 apartment buildings in antioch. the fire happened last night at an apartment building on street and auto center drive. fire crews were able to evacuate everybody in the building safely. they say 21 adults and 12 children are displaced. they are still investigating what started the fire. now coming up on the kron 4 morning news, a juror in scott peterson's murder trial is accused of misconduct. >> why his lawyers say she gave conflicting statements on the stand. plus, a student and the east bay is working hard to help ukrainian families in his home country. why -e says he won't stop working to get the much needed aid. and after the break, march madness is reviving tourism here in san francisco will show you how the industry is looking today. compare to 2 years ago.

>> tens of thousands of visitors have descended on san francisco bringing back life and tourism money to the city by the bay with march madness and the sale gp race in san francisco this weekend, the tourism industry is getting a much needed boost. kron four's gayle ong shows us what the industry looks like. first, it looks like today versus 2 years ago.

>> a must-see stop in san francisco. people flocked to pier 39 friday afternoon. it's time to get out. enjoy the world. miller is visiting from detroit for one of the 2 big events this weekend. march madness and this sale gp race. my father brother and i are here down in a friend just came down. we're all for the sailboat race and looking forward to good days like this and have a little the events giving a much needed boost to businesses along the waterfront. it's a stark contrast from 2 years ago when san francisco along with other bay area counties imposed the first day at home order. the city's tourism industry took a hit. hard to believe that we are where we are today after laying 128 people on the 17th of march in 2020 >> but weekends like this, give us faith and confidence that we're on the right path. michael coe general manager at most restaurants as customers are returning and not just people visiting from out of town. the restaurant is hosting a corporate event

kind of a mixture of some sun and clouds expected for today. now. >> east bay shoreline. there you have it again, waiting for the sun to kind of illuminating everything going on here for us. we're going to see a little bit more in the way of clouds to the west. that means peninsula, san francisco-marin. but when you get to the east, it's a bit better. clearing is what we're going to have. more sunshine expected for today. not much to see in stormtracker 4 to be more animated tomorrow and into monday and he's still going up in so kind of handed over to future cast for there's a bit more pessimistic in terms of giving us a lot of cloud cover again. we'll be seeing a little bit more of the way of sun off towards the east, but a mixed bag of sun and clouds will do it. now, let's get into when the rain starts to develop here. this is later. now we're taking into sunday and sunday morning, potentially could have some coastal drizzle at work. this is not the major system we're talking about the kind of lingering a bit. here's the major line timing on at the models appear to have much more of an agreement here. some are a little later in some a little earlier, but say around 6 or so and into the evening hours to midnight

is when that first line should be moving through. there's another one that happens as we get late tomorrow night into monday. let's jump to the winds now. this is sunday. notice the spark of the spike upwards. expect all of that. the winds start to build intensity. notice the arrows coming due south. that's not just for sunday afternoon, but that's overnight into monday morning. still pointing from the south. so we don't have the switch of the winds from the front. that will happen later on by monday. so we get spec cooler temperatures in the wake of all of that. but the transition, of course, will bring some wind. so for today that scattered clouds, more sun happening in london, mild with 60's and 70's. pretty much the rule tomorrow. we're going to call it more. mostly cloudy. could see a couple of those early showers along the coast. but the showers develop late for everybody breezy to windy, windy. and that again will be late. we're talking afternoon at the earliest to the evening hours and into nightfall. then monday got those showers lingering could have a couple claps of thunder in this program, by the way, and potentially some hail with some colder air upstairs

poland. the president is working with eastern european countries to boost their nato military presence there and help with ukraine's humanitarian emergency. now back here at home, ukrainian students at uc berkeley bear the burden of watching the destruction of their country from a distance. but that's not stopping them from shouldering responsibility to help people in need. kron forcefully took all shares one man's effort to provide immediate help to desperate families. >> one month since the russian invasion of ukraine has elapsed like a lifetime for maxims of call of duty. first week i lost a foot in bounds. i slept average 4 hours and that was working with constantly for liftoff. 16 $1 every day. the 4th year. uc berkeley phd student has been restless since his home country was attacked right now. i 2 they leave. and 24 7 just trying to help people increase. the 29 year-old who moved from ukraine to the

i'll take 'em. returned to the bart board of directors for the first time since her removal. she was ousted because of a dispute over whether she lives in the district. she represents. >> which are parts of san francisco contra costa and alameda counties earlier this month, bart officials said simon would lose her job, but they reversed course on wednesday after lawyers determined bart staff members in properly strict simon of her seat. she was first elected to the board in 2016 and served as the board's board's president in 2020. she's the only black member of the nine-member board. for the first time in california history, the state will have an openly transgender judge on the bench. governor gavin newsome appointed 58 year-old andy mood. rick, to the sacramento county superior court. she is the state's

second openly transgender judge and the first ever appointed by a governor. she's a longtime disability rights act advocate and attorney now serving as she chief deputy director at the california department of rehabilitation. west virginia senator joe manchin says he will support supreme court nominee ketanji brown jackson. it's considered a big step towards her confirmation. manchin, a moderate democrat was seen as a possible swing vote going to the gop side. mansion praised jackson's record and coulter extremely qualified. the senate judiciary committee is expected to vote april 4th on the nomination. after that, there will be a final senate floor vote. jackson is the first black woman nominated for the nation's highest court. and it's more than 200 year history. >> we have a chance do something that's never been done before. we've had 115 supreme court justices 108 of them look like me, white guys.

and out of the 115, not one african-american woman. president biden wants to change that and the person he's brought before us and the senate judiciary committee is the best. she has remarkable record importance. >> some republican panelists cautioned against jackson's confirmation, alabama attorney general steve marshall claims she would be anti police but mansions promise to vote guarantees her confirmation even if no republicans vote for her. now, supreme court justice clarence thomas was released from the hospital after being treated for nearly a week for an infection. the 73 year-old was admitted to a hospital in washington after experiencing flu-like symptoms. he was treated with antibiotics. he was expected to be released from the hospital monday or tuesday. the court didn't say why he stayed in the hospital longer than expected. irwin infection. he had that. the court does say he did not have

francisco variable cloud. 66 for oakland. 72 san jose. across the water real estate, you have some middle 70's going on in love in a bit. we're going to take a look at that 4 zone forecast and the extended camilla. >> thanks, dave. testimony for scott peterson's hearing wrapped up but a potential verdict in his hearing is still months away. peterson's lawyers are trying to win a new trial for him. a jury convicted him in 2004 of killing his wife and their unborn child. his attorneys argued there was a juror there was juror misconduct. the juror in question, richelle nice is accused of lying her way on to the jury in order to affect the verdict against peterson. >> issue is, did she knowingly lie when she filled out that juror questionnaire and did she knowingly lie during the void? dear? i'm that she made those untrue statement. she was doing it not just with the

intent to be on the jury, but to be on the injury with the intent to torpedo the defense. >> if the judge agrees that there was misconduct, peterson's murder conviction will be overturned and there would be a new trial. the next hearing is set for june 29th. now to a major development in the assault investigation into former windsor mayor dominic foppoli, the seminole county sheriff's office has turned over the investigation to the california attorney general's office. the bully is accused of multiple assaults going back to 2001. he resigned in june last year after multiple women accused him of assault. the sonoma county district attorney's office week used itself from the case because one of u pull these accusers is a former deputy district attorney and worked for the office. the fbi and the contra costa county da's office are investigating charges of

misconduct involving any on and pittsburgh police officers. the pittsburgh police department was informed of the alleged illegal activity last september. an independent investigation led with at least 3 officers being placed on paid administrative leave. this past wednesday. right now, we do not have more information on what the specific act to accusations are. a former football star and san jose police officer will be laid to rest today. 24 year-old dejon packer passed away earlier this month. he was a rookie officer for the san jose police department. and for that he was a running back at san jose state university. funeral services will be held at redemption church and san jose. a cause of death has still not been released. in the east bay. spring break is right around the corner. the berkeley unified school district is distributing free at-home covid testing kits to its staff and students. each person will receive 2 covid

rapid test. the district encourages everyone to take the test right before coming back to to school and district leaders say the covid variant ba 2 is emerging in the state. they want to make sure the schools are safe after spring break. in san jose, parents might have to find a new elementary school for their children. a committee for the evergreen school district has voted in favor of shutting be wally elementary in june of next year. kron four's justin campbell has more on what led up to the decision. >> the superintendent sending a letter to parents saying basically due to budget reasons. along with declining enrollment, they may have to close the school. but the big question, where will the students go next? pta president nancy keogh has 2 girls who be wally elementary school. keough says she's ok with the district permanently closing the school as long as there is a school resources

for her daughters. interim superintendent, steve. but hondo is promising parents, quote, a nearby school with higher enrollment. be wally, has that capacity to accommodate all of be wally students and keep them together targeting this neighborhood because we're port charlotte. campbell is a former teacher be wally. she says the district closed another elementary dog hill and come next. joan, this would be the second school. the district is closing and a low social economic neighborhood. similar population >> similar dynamics, parents walking their children to school grandparents walking their kids to school, high minority concentration in response. the school district says the biggest factor in closing schools is enrollment numbers. it also be wally students would be able to take school. bus to their new a- >> it would just be a little bit more work because i would

california drivers. now the price of gas is still painful at the pump. i should know. i just. >> but in some gas yesterday, the statewide average set a new record $5. and 91 for $5.91 a gallon. now, gas prices, gas price hikes here are happening. despite the drop in the national average financial experts say flaring at the state refineries is part of the problem. >> california has had 3 different refinery flaring about in the last 2 weeks. and so it's kind of risen to a critical level because of the amount of of refineries having this issue and it could take a couple of weeks for those refineries to get fully back online. >> now, financial experts don't expect the $6 a gallon price to last for a long, although they say it will take a while for gas prices to go back to what's considered normal. now, some california drivers are heading across the border to save on gas into

police say garcia was reported missing on the 15 she was killed 2 days later. according to the hanford sentinel newspaper in the central valley, garcia was also reported missing a few years ago. back in august of 2019, police say garcia was still alive when she was found in a sacramento apartment building. it's just a few blocks away from the state capital. they say responding officers were and able to save her life. the corner confirmed her identity yesterday in a statement to kron 4, the oakland unified school district spokesperson described garcia has, quote, a bright light at castle lawn whose natural talents were obvious to those around her. the fact that she passed the way that she did is another tragic example of our country scourge of gun violence, which must come to an end. now we're still working to get more information about the circumstances surrounding garcia staff. and we'll bring you the latest details as they

become available. there's a new push in the search for a missing oakley woman. alexis cave was last seen january. 26 near antioch, friends, family and volunteers have been combing the area for any sign of her. they'll be out again this weekend looking for. the search will be different because they are extending their search to include private property. local farmers, ranchers and other people with access to various buildings and sheds are being asked to check their property. anyone with information is asked to contact oakley police. walnut creek. police are looking for 16 year-old giovanni martinez. this is a picture of him. they say he was last seen thursday morning around 7.45. in the area of contra costa and taylor boulevard. police say he was wearing a black adidas jacket and pants and why air force once he's 5 foot 5 and weighs 120 pounds. if you have any information you can contact walnut creek police. turning

now to another big story. we're following them or said police department is now offering a $3,000 reward to find a man believed to be sophia mason scheller. the 8 year-old from hayward was found dead 2 weeks ago in merced county. now the search is on for the boyfriend of sophia's mother, dante jackson, who is believed to be here in the bay area. kron four's amanda hari talk to sofia's cousin about the fact that jackson it's still on the run. >> a voice that has been silenced too soon. and now it's another day of wondering for sophia mason's family about exactly how the little girl died. it's like it's unbelievable. feels like i'm living in a 4 story that keeps unfolding. the 8 year-old body was found in merced said county in early march. >> her mother, samantha johnson, led police to the body inside her boyfriend's home. the merced said police

shoreline. until again, the sunshine helps mix that out as far as cloud cover. it's still winter storm system upstream. give us little time to kind of get its act together, if you will, to. the package does include some winds which will get into now for today, this particular model run is a little bit more pessimistic to keep a lot more cloud cover around. i think we'll see better clearing in the east bay. then the peninsula in san francisco. and then as we get into tomorrow, we see some coastal showers as a possibility. so early tomorrow morning, like half moon bay, we're showing you are even san francisco might have a little bit away. some drizzle going on. that's not the real storm. yeah. that just kind of precursor of motion. there's the deeper moisture getting in here. probably after sunset is when the coverage area will start taking us into tomorrow night. now, let's get back. those winds i-four this to tomorrow morning. so tomorrow afternoon here, the winds checking in a good, strong clip in from the south. now the storm system, the low which the long-range forecast models will show you kind of track to our south excuse me

late. that will be on monday. so we're going to be in the northern edge of that second wave into monday, but still got to keep that in the forecast, colder air aloft. so that means we might have a couple claps of thunder thrown in there for good measure or hale, you might see. but importantly, mountain snows to collect scattered clouds, more inland son, mild 60's 70's program tomorrow, mostly cloudy showers late. that's the deep stuff i showed breezy to windy happening late as well next week got some leftover showers on monday. the balance of the week still got to keep kind of a mixed bag, some sun and clouds there. we do see an interruption front by thursday or wednesday or so. and that will reinforce the cooler temperatures with the pop expected thursday friday to warm up just a little bit. got 62 today, san francisco, 66 for oakland, a san jose checks in at 72. we do see other 70's there, though, in the far east bay with better clearing around the delta and then 75 for santa rosa in a bit. we'll be checking it out. 4 zone forecast for you and the extended camilla.

>> thanks, dave. tragedy unfolding at a florida theme park after a boy plummets to his death from a drop tower that stands more than 400 feet tall. authorities say 14 year-old tyree samson was visiting the park from missouri. they're trying to determine exactly what went wrong. now, cell phone video from just before the fall appears to show people on the ride telling workers they're not being strapped in properly. brian entin has the story. >> the icon amusement park in orlando is surrounded by police tape. the orlando freefall ride is closed after 14 year-old tyree. sampson died after falling off the ride last night. the seat he was in is now covered in plastic. this video widely shared online shows the tragedy. we've positive video before the teen falls. you can hear people on the ride urging the employees to call for

help. it does appear to be just a tragic situation. >> so all that's being looked at again. our role in this situation is determine whether or not this is an accident or intentional act. and this does appears just to be a terrible tragedy. the orange county, florida sheriff says everything appeared to be working normally with the ride that open just in december, according to the amusement park, it's the world's tallest drop tower, dropping thrill-seekers 400 feet at about 75 miles per hour. hearts are broken for that. >> family of the young men and again, we're going to do everything we can to work with investigating authorities to get to the matter. this investigators say the 14 year-old victim is from missouri and was visiting orlando with family friends, florida's department of agriculture and consumer services is in charge of inspecting rides and already has a team investigating what went wrong. >> our prayers and our thoughts are with the family. you know, we can't imagine what they're going

>> now, state lawmakers are backing a bill that would allow parents to sue social media companies that their children become addicted to their apps. it's called the social media platform duty to children act. it would hold companies legally accountable for features designed to be addictive, such as like ins and endless scrolling tech companies could face civil penalties of up to $25,000 per child. the bipartisan bill will soon go to the california assembly and could be on governor newsom's desk by september. now for your money this morning, as many americans file their taxes. lawmakers are concerned some families are not taking advantage of the child and dependent care tax credit because of this members of congress are calling on the administration to increase awareness of the tax credit. basil, john has the story. >> some lawmakers are urging the biden administration to spread the word about the

child and dependent care tax credit. we want to make sure that folks know about it. i just don't think the administration is doing a good enough job in getting the word out. pennsylvania democratic senator bob casey also wants american families to utilize this now refundable tax credit. we should also the cost of childcare, thousands of dollars extra just for this year. you know, if families claim on their tax returns, parents can receive up to $4,000 per child. casey says this tax credit can cover things besides just daycare expenses incurred with regard to summer camps. babysitting. before and after school care. it's a good way to get some relief at a time when inflation has increased republicans agree many americans may not realize starting this tax season, they can get the credit even if they don't make enough to pay taxes. we want everybody to be able to take advantage of that that possibly can. west virginia senator shelley moore capito says it's an important benefit for americans still

>> dave, thank you. testimony for scott peterson's hearing wrapped up but a potential verdict in his hearing is still months away. peterson's lawyers are trying to win a new trial for peterson. he was convicted in 2004 of killing his wife and their unborn child. his attorneys argued there was juror misconduct kron four's. rob nesbit has more. >> peterson's defense team provided kron 4 with a list of 16 witnesses back in february for them took the stand during this hearing. richelle nice. another juror in east palo alto clerk in today's witness. big ads. aqi, nice is former defense attorney, california's most infamous murder trial continues to make headlines. this is a day that we've been waiting for for a very long time as the defense for scott peterson works to prove that the juror richelle nice had biased against peterson this time questioning her former defense attorney to get zack e about e-mails he had with the san mateo county da's office and the declaration nice had to make about whether or not she lied during jury selection. legal analyst

reported missing. 16 year-old marcelo garcia was shot and killed last week in sacramento. she was a sophomore at castleman high school in oakland. garcia was expected to saying i her school's upcoming cinco de mayo celebration. sacramento police say garcia was reported missing on the 15th. she was killed 2 days later, according to the hanford sentinel newspaper in central valley, garcia was also reported missing a few years ago. back in august of 2019. now police say garcia was still alive when she was found in sacramento apartment building. it's just a few blocks away from the state capital. they say responding officers were unable to save her life. the coroner confirmed her identity yesterday. now in a statement to kron 4, the oakland unified school district spokesperson

sonoma county district attorney's office recused itself from the case because one of foppoli's accusers is a former deputy district attorney and worked for the office. the fbi and the contra costa county da's office are investigating charges of misconduct involving antioch and pittsburgh police officers. the pittsburgh police department was informed of the alleged illegal activity last september. independent investigation led with at least 3 officers being placed on paid administrative leave this past wednesday. and right now we do not have more information on what the specific accusations are. san francisco police are investigating a shooting that injured 3 people. police say the shooting happened thursday night at 3rd street and kirkwood avenue in bay view. investigators say someone in a car started shooting a high capacity firearm at people in front of a pizza restaurant.

still not been released. now, tragedy unfolding at a florida theme park after a boy plummets to his death from a drop tower that stands more than 400 feet tall. authorities say 14 year-old tyree sampson was visiting the park from missouri. they're trying to determine exactly what went wrong. cell phone video from just before the fall appears to show people on the right telling workers they're not being strapped in properly, right. and has the story. >> the icon amusement park in orlando is surrounded by police tape. the orlando freefall ride is closed after 14 year-old tyree. sampson died after falling off the ride last night. the seat he was in is now covered in plastic. this video widely shared online shows the tragedy. we've positive video before the teen falls. you can

hear people on the ride urging the employees to call for help. it does appear to be just a tragic situation. >> so all that's being looked at again. our role in this situation is determine whether or not this is an accident or intentional act. and this does appears just to be a terrible tragedy. the orange county, florida sheriff says everything appeared to be working normally with the ride that open just in december, according to the amusement park, it's the world's tallest drop tower, dropping thrill-seekers 400 feet at about 75 miles per hour. hearts are broken for that. >> family of the young men and again, we're going to do everything we can to work with investigating authorities to get to the matter. this investigators say the 14 year-old victim is from missouri and was visiting orlando with family friends, florida's department of agriculture and consumer services is in charge of inspecting rides and already has a team investigating what went wrong.
