determined fentanyl toxicity is what caused the death of former san jose police officer john packer, the 24 year-old rookie officer was found dead in his milpitas home back in march. packer was a football star at san jose state before pursuing a career in law enforcement. the investigation into his death is ongoing. we will update you as more information becomes available. for your health this morning. the cdc continues to investigate cases of severe hepatitis in young kids. so far there have been 18 cases reported in at least 4 states with the first cases in the u.s. coming from alabama of those alabama cases. the patients were from different parts of the state. they did not have any contact with each other and all were considered generally healthy with no immune system, weakness or history of a previous covid infection, vomiting and diarrhea. with the most common symptoms among patients, the cdc has issued a health advisory. this week. the biden

administration announced the fda will move forward with rules to ban the sale of menthol cigarettes. washington correspondent raquel martin has the details for us. >> health organizations like the american lung association say the ban could prevent thousands if not millions of americans from growing addicted to cigarettes. we're truly excited. erika sward with the american lung association is applauding the fda's effort to ban the sale of menthol flavored cigarettes. menthol cigarettes are very dangerous. menthol cigarettes make it easier for the poisoning to go down. sort says the proposed rule is years in the making fda's scientific advisory committee recommended that cigarettes be removed from the marketplace to the obama administration and comes after a decades old battle with tobacco companies who fought to keep the flavor on the market. this is something the industry will not go quietly into the night

>> why the car drove off the cliff is still unclear. but the california highway patrol does confirm. >> that a man possibly in his 40's has died. a girl was also killed. >> the search continued into the morning for a possible 3rd victim. but that person was not found in the u.s. coast guard suspended its search just before 9 o'clock in the morning. >> we're told the crash here at prescott arrow state beach happened just before 9 o'clock friday night. the chp says the 2012 toyota tacoma driving down pescadero creek road headed toward the ocean, continue through the highway. one intersection and the beach parking lot before falling 30 feet down the cliff. the car was partially submerged in the water. >> the man was found dead about an hour after the crash. the girl located inside the car at around 1 o'clock in the morning. both victims are from freedom, california. some of things that happen in cases like this is a person could

be. >> driving under influence of alcohol or drugs that could be going to mean that those, you know, those falling out of love, those falling at the event last night. but in the way, they got to ready to drive that vehicle. >> and be ready for anything that can happen. and in this case, what happened then as in the city as the investigation continues, we'll learn more and more. either way, it's a very surprising that we lost 2 lights and possibly through the coast guard believes that this time only 2 people were inside the car. but if at any point investigators determined there was a 3rd person, they'll continue. >> their search as for the crash itself, the chp says at this point it's unclear if drugs or alcohol were factors. in san mateo county fleet of all kron, 4 news. >> in the east bay, a car crashed into a traffic signal an abrupt it into flames. this happened at the intersection of market street and stanford avenue in north oakland

saturday. that's just a few blocks away from san pablo avenue. firefighters had to use special equipment to get the driver out. the driver suffered burns and was taken to the hospital for treatment. we are getting a look at new video of police chasing a stolen porsche in alameda county. police say the man got behind the wheel, got up to 100 miles per hour along san leandro streets before crashing as he tried to run away and eventually being arrested. police have not reported any injuries related to that case. the union representing nurses at stanford health care and lucile packard children's hospital have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract. this could end the strike that began on monday. union reps say if approved the deal would give their members a 7% wage increase this year, along with a 5% increase next april and another in april 2024. the deal also includes an increase to the nurses, retirement benefits and an

extra week of vacation. for all nurses starting in 2024. but the union members still have to vote on the deal before anything becomes official. about 5,000 nurses at both facilities went on strike monday over working conditions and staff shortages. if you use the google chrome browser, the company is urging you to please install new software update. this comes after google says hackers found and got into some security holes in the software. this problem affects windows mac o s the next and other browsers using google code. the announcement also comes. as security firms worry about possible russian cyber attacks because of the united states support of ukraine. a new report shows the fbi searched electronic data without a warrant millions of times last year. the report says the fbi conducted as many as 3.4 million searches. a senior fbi official admits the number is large, but as the number of

>> iowa and a lot of people are perfection in in many areas, diet as well as exercise. and this is where the all their 9th mentality just needs to get get added your head because, you know, usually we all have lives. we can always get to our full workout. so if only if you can only fit in 8 minutes, then do 8 minutes. you know, it doesn't have to be all or none, right? it's all about celebrating the small victories in the baby steps to right? >> absolutely. absolutely. and i'm also walk us through the importance of simplifying our workouts. yeah. so simple. find work has often workouts become. >> very complicated, maybe and or too long. and this is where you can actually run into trouble because you increase your risk of injury. you also increase your your the likelihood that you'll also

lose motivation as well as energy. so you want to simplify the workout and that's what what goes into the next tip, which is, you know, don't do isolated exercises and isolated exercises are exercise. is that just focus on one muscle? so that would be like many people are familiar with the bicep curl. so the bicep curl is just focusing on the bicep and >> activity said david daily living. >> they don't just focus on 1 one muscle group. they when you do something in daily life, you're usually you seeing many muscle groups, multiple joints and those are called compound exercises. so those are the things that you want to include. and there's so much more efficient cars you can kill several birds with one stone by like a pullout would be working your biceps plus your chest, your

p and 03:00pm, ok, here's what it looks like on the satellite picture upstream. there's a front going to interrupt that heating, by the way, we're getting today for your monday. most important factor. most people notice a subtle drop in temperatures winds. another bout of those onshore winds. they might get near the threshold of a wind advisory potentially. so just a heads up with that will let you know, 61, antioch, 52 for livermore, things improve there. 50's along the east bay shoreline for now 50 santa rosa. 51 for napa very early in the day. of course, futurecast for doesn't hold much happening in the short term here. pretty clear for us and a good for tonight. but then monday, a brief moment of some scattered clouds right about the morning commute here. there looks to be that promise of rain. well, that's going to be maybe a couple sprinkles on the higher elevations potentially basically sunny for the afternoon. but behind all of that will be those winds are going to be watching. so just a heads up with that. let's get to that in future cast for here. they are this afternoon, not the intensity we had from yesterday. then it looks like

>> in the south bay, a woman was hit and killed while walking on interstate 6.80 last night. it happened near capitol avenue. police say the driver remained on scene and is cooperating with officers. this is the 17th pedestrian to be killed in san jose. so far this year. overall, 30 people have been killed in traffic accidents in the area in 2022. the coroner's office has determined fentanyl toxicity is what caused the death. a former san jose police officer day. john packer, the 24 year-old rookie officer was found dead in his milpitas home back in march. packer was a football star at san jose state before pursuing a career in law enforcement. the investigation into his death is ongoing and we will update you as soon as more information becomes available. we're health this morning. the cdc continues to investigate cases of severe hepatitis and young kids. so far there have been 18 cases reported in at least 4 states with the first cases in the u.s. coming from

alabama. those alabama cases, the patients were from different parts of the state. they did not have any contact with each other and all were considered generally healthy with no immune system, weakness or history of a previous covid infection, vomiting and diarrhea were among the most common symptoms. the cdc has issued a health advisory. this week. the biden administration announced the fda will move forward with rules to ban the sale of menthol cigarettes. washington correspondent raquel martin has the details. >> health organizations like the american lung association say the ban could prevent thousands if not millions of americans from growing addicted to cigarettes. we're truly excited. erika sward with the american lung association is applauding the fda's effort to ban the sale of menthol flavored cigarettes. menthol cigarettes are very dangerous. menthol cigarettes make it easier for the poisoning to go down. sort

says the proposed rule is years in the making fda's scientific advisory committee recommended that menthol cigarettes be removed from the marketplace to the obama administration and comes after a decades old battle with tobacco companies who fought to keep the flavor on the market. this is something the industry will not go quietly into the night about. and she's right already. groups like british american tobacco say they plan to fight against the proposed rule saying in a statement we do not believe the public science supports regulating menthol cigarettes differently from non menthol cigarettes. thursday, white house press secretary jen psaki defended the administration's efforts. its estimate the limiting menthol and tobacco products could prevent up to 650,004 1000 deaths over the next 40 years and pushed back against criticism. the rule could result in the arrest of black americans who disproportionately used the products because rule would go after manufacturers and people

who sell not individuals to smoke menthol cigarettes. it is not just health organizations applauding the band. civil rights groups say for decades now, the tobacco industry has targeted black communities disproportionately black americans use menthol products. of course, it could take nearly a year for the rule to be finalized. for now in washington, raquel martin, back to you. attorney general rob bonta is investigating what he calls a global plastic pollution crisis. >> and he's going he's going after exxon mobil. he says the oil and gas company ran a decades long campaign deceiving the public about the harmful environmental effects of plastic. that's despite a warning the company received about those effects in the 1970's bonta says most plastic products which are made from petroleum are not recyclable and end up in landfills or in the ocean. exxonmobil rejected these allegations saying it is working with the public and other industries as well as the state of california to advance recycling. the epa

issued an emergency waiver to allow the sale of e 15 fuel during the summer driving season. it's the latest step in the biden administration's effort to lower gas prices. the e 15 fuel makes is a blend of 15% alcohol or other ethanol, 15% ethanol. and 85% gasoline. it's usually not allowed to be sold during the warmer months because of air pollution concerns. but some experts say could save drivers about $0.10 a gallon at the pump on average. >> i think he's a london force will continue to given the fact that the economy still in the rebound. we're seeing a lot of commerce. and i don't refineries to be able to really get hold of the situation for eventually many months. >> no word exactly. when the wife waivers will expire. it will depend on what happens with gas prices in the future. the white house correspondents

bit from rush right now. yeah, it's. >> we made it huge feat for anyone, but especially for someone who is told this is not possible the doctors took my phone out of my leg, they woke me up after anna sesion said i'd never play sports again. >> not never walk normally again in my life. cody had his best friend, connor at his side, rooting him along the way. he was as much of a part of this is i was i could have done it without him for it being for such a great might couldn't really say no. >> i think it's important just to know what the stands for. primarily that is hope. >> well, the walk for hope. this video day. one of the walk for hope 10 months ago, june 17th 2021 for those that don't know the bone cancer survivor walking batter my to 30, a walking across america crossing into nevada. this is our 16th state. cody was challenge. she lived through southern pennsylvania, heard nearby gunfire in arizona was chased by farmers. got covid

midway and did everything to save to maximize donations. we stayed in the car for majority of the last 70 days in order to conserve budget. there it is. our final state boundary as we enter the state of california and there were cool moments like the oklahoma thunder invited cody do again. he met ufc president dana white and got noticed by some pretty big names. >> you know, cody dj here, the most impactful part of his journey meeting kids like colton who battled the same cancer. 17 year-old at cody walk today in her honor. she just came here. she got released from city hope and we drove straight here to see him that is just so humbling. and we've been unpacking 50 families live. this is the end of chapter great chapter. one was to walk across america. >> the rest of the story is to go down the list of things doctor said i would never do

latest. hey, good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. and a beautiful sunday. it will be were just up in those temperatures a little bit this afternoon compared to what we had yesterday live shot of the east bay shoreline complements of uc berkeley. and he's not much the way of fog this morning. now, tomorrow in some of the valleys, we might see a little bit of that because that marine layer is going to kind of strengthen up a little bit as this new front drops to the south. there it is that you can see the line out line up in the upper left-hand side of your screen. that's a brief system moving through the big thing. you're going to notice tomorrow on balance is going to be the winds and an interruption of heating. so it'll be a little cooler than today. a quick check in the winds calm to single digits over most of the real estate will see a little uptick this afternoon, but not as breezy as yesterday. 61, antioch, most of the temperatures have been on the move. a little chilly this morning up in the north bay. but now up in the 50's, the the cool spot, 47 with still that onshore tendencies. so no surprise there. 52 san jose and an impressive 50 for half moon bay all the way. don't expect much more on the way of movement this afternoon. coastal numbers will be a bit

cooler. 69 at high noon to 3 78 again in reserves might see an 80 here or there and another run for another heat spike for you by the middle the week. we might actually see a 90 or so by wednesday we'll have more new longer range forecast and it stephanie, looking forward to it. thank you, dave. >> a tragic accident on the peninsula. 2 people are dead and a 3rd person may be missing in san mateo county after a late night car crash at pescadero state beach kron forcefully to go reports on what we know. >> why the car drove off the cliff is still unclear. but the california highway patrol does confirm. >> that a man possibly in his 40's has died. a girl was also killed. >> the search continued into the morning for a possible 3rd victim. but that person was not found in the u.s. coast guard suspended its search just before 9 o'clock in the morning. >> we're told the crash here at prescott arrow state beach happened just before 9 o'clock friday night. the chp says the

2012 toyota tacoma driving down pescadero creek road headed toward the ocean, continue through the highway. one intersection and the beach parking lot before falling 30 feet down the cliff. >> the car was partially submerged in the water. the man was found dead about an hour after the crash. the girl located inside the car at around 1 o'clock in the morning. both victims are from freedom, california. some of things that happen in cases like this is a person could be. >> driving under influence of alcohol or drugs that could be going to be that those, you know, those falling out of love, those falling at the event last night. but in the way, they got to ready to drive that vehicle. >> and be ready for anything that can happen. and in this case, what happened then? i'm going to see it as the investigation continues. >> we'll learn more and more. either way, it's a very surprising that we lost 2 lights and possibly through the coast guard believes that this time only 2 people were inside the car. but if at any

point investigators determined there was a 3rd person, they'll continue their search. as for the crash itself, the chp says at this point it's unclear if drugs or alcohol were factors. in san mateo county fleet of all kron, 4 news. >> in the east bay, a car crashed into a traffic signal and erupted into flames. this happened at the intersection of market street in stanford avenue in north oakland saturday. that's a big intersection just a few blocks away from san pablo avenue. firefighters had to use the jaws of life equipment to get the driver out. the driver sustained burns in the crash and was taken to the hospital for treatment. we are getting a look at new video of police chase chasing a stolen porsche in alameda county. police say the man got behind the wheel or rather the man behind the wheel got up to 100 miles per hour along san leandro streets before crashing. he tried to run away was eventually arrested. police have not

reported any injuries related to this chase. the union representing about 5,000 nurses at stanford, health care and lucile packard children's hospital have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract. this could end the nurses strike that began on monday. union reps say if approved the deal would give their members a 7% wage increase this year, along with a 5% increase next april and another in april 2024. the deal also includes an increase to the nurses, retirement benefits and an extra week of vacation. for all nurses starting in 2024. but the union members still have to vote on that deal before anything becomes official. about 5,000 nurses at both facilities went on strike monday over working conditions and staff shortages. if you use the google chrome browser, you're urged to install many new software update. the tech giant is warning users to get those updates soon because hackers apparently discovered some security holes. google so

many high level problems within the software which affect windows mac o s linick's and other browsers using google code. no word yet on anything specific with regards the state of that software. but the announcement does come as security firms worry about possible russian cyber attacks. a new report shows the fbi searched electronic data without a warrant millions of times last year. the report says the fbi conducted as many as 3.4 million searches of u.s. data. a senior fbi official admitted that the number may sound large, but the number of americans impacted may not be as large as the number of searches suggests. the report does not allege any of the searches were illegal. more of the more than half of all searches were related to an investigation involving russian threats.

>> welcome back. we have dave spahr here with your weather forecast. and dave, how long is all the sunshine going to last for a looks pretty good for a stephanie all the way into next week. good morning and good morning, everybody. >> sfo, no delays happening out that way. even as much in the way of some just in fog that we had from yesterday to east bay shoreline is looking good at that blue skies in blue bay with this warm up that is reflected up in the mountains as well. tahoe forecast calls for those numbers reaching about 70 wednesday. that's that heat. we call that heat spike. that point is around the bay. those numbers are going to start to get into summer like territory. but the klein, 54 tomorrow, 62 on tuesday, by the way, winds which were going to be here in the bay, too. and 70 on wednesday. so it'll be a little break in the middle the week as high pressure builds have a little bit of an arc here. it's 61 right now for antioch. 54 concord. 52 livermore up to the north bay, mostly 50's, although valais standing out

just typical 49, you have those onshore winds. we're going to have today and tomorrow, 60 san carlos. so what's going do that is the cloud cover to the north. you see here this this front now it will throw some cloud cover for us early tomorrow morning. and you might get a little sprinkle in some of the higher elevations, but to get the north bay that for the most part most you're going to notice brief instance of cloud cover out early enough and then some of those onshore winds. they will flip a little bit offshore for solano county. looks like late in the day on monday. so just going to be watching it throughout the day. you can for our forecast today. it's sunny today. some of that marine layer comes back tonight. so be some morning fog and some of the valleys in the east bay with the front arrival early in the morning tomorrow, some scattered clouds, but then it clears out again. and then it's the wind story that we've been talking about for the afternoon. getting back to the winds today. we do still have them with us onshore. there will be in the most part little bit of an offshore wind up in the north bay. briefly this morning before shifts and it's going to be as strong as we head from yesterday. but

tomorrow, a little bit of a spike going on might be enough for perhaps the higher elevations have a wind advisory. maybe it's kind of teetering on that. then here's the flip. we have offshore as you'll notice up there to solano county briefly and up to nap, but looks like as well. let's get to the 4 zone forecast covering you for this sunday. 65 san francisco. it's a little cooler along the coast that we may still be holding on to some 50's, though, today, 60's cover us along the bay side. 69 foster city, 73 for palo alto. continue to build to that for the south bay, though, 74 san jose, 77 morgan hill, 74 for santa clara, east bay shoreline to the south, lower 70's tri valley. you're looking at the mid to upper 70 79 walnut creek, 79 for concord. but again, some areas may popping about 80 today. berkeley at 70, a cool 69, 82. meanwhile, for fairfield water makes a big difference. 78 for napa and santa rosa at 79. but on balance, you could probably call this a spring forecast as temperatures are jumping all

over the place with this. so we had a brief warm-up today. then the cool down for monday. warming back up again, as you can see tuesday, wednesday, cooling off as we head on to the latter portion of the week. we were hoping on thursday, maybe throw raindrop on there. but for now, variable clouds, people here. wow. some in studio conversation. the con for kron. 4 morning news continues.

generations of people who get to enjoy this for ever. it's so it's like i might cry because it still is still hitting me. i'm so happy. there are some people against this, though. >> someone jfk open to cars on weekdays for more accessibility jfk first became 100% car free back in april of 2020 by mayor london breed. and people in the city fell in love with this. now 300,000 people use it per month. every single day the commute on recreate on right by for now. >> i'm sarah stinson reporting in san francisco. back to you. >> all right. here to talk with us. more about all of this is san francisco supervisor rafael mandelman. thank you so much for joining us. mister supervisor. great to be here. all right. so clearly a lot of public support, as you just heard for a car free jfk, you're a parks and rec department also did a survey, 70% of respondents saying that they are in favor of this move. so what's your reaction to this finally becoming a reality? well, it

as you said, 12 hours of debate on tuesday. was that a long day? yeah. and people have a lot of feelings on all sides of the issue. but i think, you know, the board made the right decision. i think that. >> you know, people loved her for through the pandemic. and as we come out of the pandemic, i think other cities around the world have done things like this have converted roads recreation and i think it makes a lot of sense make sense for the environment. makes sense for kids. we did here and have heard concerns from access issues that i think we're going to have to do some work over the next months and years to him, increase access for disabled folks and folks who live far away from the park. but i think this was the right move for san francisco that he described the energy in that room as that debate was going on. i mean, there were hours and hours of that. was that like, yeah, well, i think the supervisors, energy waned by be i'm sure i people are passionate about this. i think in people who support a car-free jfk saw this as being

about the environment and about pedestrian and bicycle safety and people who are opposed you know, felt like this was keeping people out of the park and that is not the intention. i think there's a lot of things that we can do to make the park more accessible than it was before. and it sounds like you've proposed some legislation in response to what some of the concert at response of some of the critics concerns about. >> you the mobility access issues for those who might be seniors wanting to get to the museum. and can you walk us through some of that legislation? yeah, i mean, there's i think 40 points in their of things that we were going to work on. one thing is there needs to be more disabled more access and that one. so we're striking a bunch of disabled parking spaces around the park. >> there's you know, we need to let people know that you actually can get basically to the front door of the museum. if you drive into the garage. so we need to provide a lot more signage around how you can get around the park. now, it's still possible to get

pretty much anywhere. you want to get. and there are there still like, you know, 5,000 parking spaces in the so there's still a lot of access. but we need to make sure that people know how to get around. and then we need to have, you know, we have instituted a shuttle that care that carries people around the park, but we need to increase the frequency of that. we need to make it really easy for people to get around. and, you know, those are the that's the flavor of some of the things we're going to do, what we're doing. some work around the garage, particularly for low-income folks to make able to access the museum's in and so, you know, i think it's this is not going to. it's not going to be done in snap of the fingers. i think we're going to have to continue working on this. but the board's coming to the mayors committed and and we're going to make you know, car-free jfk continue but also make the park more accessible for all. >> the legislation itself has it has been passed its past. okay. these 40 different how

soon can we start to see maybe construction and where is the funding coming from? some of them have already started. so there is a shuttle, but we need to appropriate to service and have it run more frequently >> we're going you know, do some of the changes around the use of the garage. already happening. the striping will be happened. the striping of new i'm a disabled ac%ess will be happening over the next few months. >> and beyond that, thinking about rethinking the use of the garage and may be thinking about ways to make it cheaper for that's going take a little more but >> i think we'll get there. >> and any word on where the funding specifically will come from for these projects. we're going to have to figure out a way somehow we have a very large city 13 billion and we're going to have to. >> our parks are one of the things that i think all san feel actually great about or most san franciscans feel great about these are worthwhile investments and and we want we want golden gate park to be for everyone. we want all our parks to be for everyone. how should people

envision golden gate park in 5.10, years? well, i think we're going to have this amazing, you know, car-free probably continued. i think, you know, i hope that our museums have come back from the pandemic. the tourism has revived people. the ferris might still be there that, you know, that's a destination for folks. anywhere from any neighborhood in san francisco. but really for folks around the world that people know about golden gate park and love it and love the institutions. there and are also able to feel and do things outside their cars. one of all san francisco fail mandelman. thank you so much for your perspective for joining us on the show today. thank you so much for having me. all right. we'll be right back.

first time you guys are having the festival come back in person. walk us through how that feels. >> yeah, it's it's great. you know, we lost festival we had in person was in so it's been almost 3 years now. and we're excited to be back at union square again. continue. our annual tradition. >> yeah, and you know, obviously the past several years have been really hard for everyone. so to be able to meet up in person, you know, we had our first virtual event last year and it was it was nice, but it will be really great to be able to actually see everyone now. >> yeah, and the bay area and i i don't think everyone knows is the bay area is home to so many taiwanese americans. some notable personalities. we know basketball star jeremy lin also the co-founder of yahoo. jerry yang, right? so, you know, but because there might not be so much awareness about jaime's american culture, what is it about culture, but you want people to experience and take away from the upcoming festival.

>> well, so, you know, people in a single that i won first think of the food and which you know, this is food is definitely great in taiwan and what time super known for. but, you know, there's a little bit of the history and culture of town as people that i think, you know, the public is not aware and so we hope that through this event, we can share more insight on the culture of thai one history and and why it was days. >> you've mentioned some notable names. so we definitely have connections to the rest of the world. but i think it be great to share more of that history. for instance, the indigenous people and time one of the languages are part of the family. so that stretches all the way down to the south pacific and, you know, it is all although we love boba, it does go. haha are beyond that, though. we're hoping people get a taste the festival. very good and so kind walk us through what people can at

this upcoming festival in union square. >> so we will have, you know, a variety of performances. so that spent throughout the day and then we'll also have a tent that talks about tony's history and culture in the town will also feature various tony's authors and story tellers, which we think are great to bring the stories to life. >> some of children's authors will be at the festival. so a great chance for people to bring their kids and listen to story time. obviously the we have some great food vendors who are classics or maybe some new faces to the bay area. food scene. so excited for people to check those out too. you mention the food being a huge part of taiwanese culture. my parents being from taiwan as well like i. >> i know all about. but for our viewers who might not be as familiar with walk us through, some may be the popular food options in taiwanese culture. >> see one of the through that

will have at the event is like know me. and so will sue, which is last 6 2. you know, i think we were somewhat limited, but by what we can cook. but i you know that that is definitely one of the main attractions. >> we have some other vendors who are coming in doing pre packaged snacks. and you also have some cool aloe drinks coming out. so i think, you know, obviously fill up on snacks, but also get some refreshing beverages. you know, it's kind of a cliche at this point, but people always say how time his parents show their love is 5 way. have you eaten yet on of ways. all right. and so we definitely hope people who come to the festival will get to defy that. a lot definitely feel. and we hope that you get a chance in it. this past year has over the last couple of years, actually. >> you know, we've seen this rise anti-asian sentiment. in.

i'm just curious to know how that's affected you personally and members of the taiwanese american community. >> yeah, you know, i think that's definitely great point. and i think one of the ways that i think topping our festival helps with that alleviate the issue does to more awareness. and, you know, we're in us about the different cultures that we have in america, especially in the bay county's population is such a big population and so we think that having awareness for one and you know, that there's a celebration for in respect for all the different cultures in america that we can start to, you levy, an address that issues. >> absolutely. i think that in the moments where i personally feel fear or i worry about the elders in our community. i think about the people who come together to make sure that like no one has to walk by themselves. and it's not just limited to the taiwanese community. it's been heartening to see different groups come together. you know, i try to remember that

when i feel fear. >> you know, what is your message to the community at this you know, there's been so much i suppose anxiety and fear because of what's happened to and what's been what's been happening in the asian-american community. how can people help? >> well, that that feels i know one of the one of the slogans from the tonys government last year was the hashtag taiwan can help. and that was quite specifically with the covid-19 situation and, you know, the lessons that taiwan has learned about pandemics and how that's helped all of us. and i think the pandemic fed into a lot of other tensions in the community. and so. generally, i we hope that people know that 10 these people are helpful and tony's americans are helpful. and so, you know, we're we're here to celebrate. we're here to help each other. >> yeah, i think just to

to an inspiring story about a young southern california cancer survivor who spent the last 9 months walking across america, raising money and awareness about pediatric cancer. christina pascucci caught up with him at the end of his journey on the santa monica pier. >> 246 days is how long it took for cody o'connor to cross america is amazing feat for anyone let alone someone who is told he would never walk normally ever again. >> the feeling is isn't saying. >> 26 year-old cancer survivor cody o'connor's. 3800 mile cross-country track finish here on santa monica pier. my knees are buckling a little bit from rush right now. yeah, it's. >> we made it huge feat for

anyone, but especially for someone who is told this is not possible the doctors took my phone out of my leg, they woke me up after anna sesion said i'd never play sports again. >> not never walk normally again in my life. cody had his best friend, connor at his side, rooting him along the way. he was as much of a part of this is i was i could have done it without him for it being for such a great might couldn't really say no. >> i think it's important just to know what the stands for. primarily that is >> well, the walk for hope. this video day. one of the walk for hope 10 months ago, june 17th 2021 for those that don't know the bone cancer survivor walking batter my to 30, a walking across america crossing into nevada. this is our 16th state. cody was challenge. she lived through southern pennsylvania, heard nearby gunfire in arizona was chased by farmers. got covid midway and did everything to save to maximize donations. we stayed in the car for majority of the last 70 days in order

to conserve budget. there it is. our final state boundary as we enter the state of california and there were cool moments like the oklahoma thunder invited cody do again. he met ufc president dana white and got noticed by some pretty big names. >> you know, cody dj here, the most impactful part of his journey meeting kids like colton who battled the same cancer. 17 year-old at cody walk today in her honor. she just came here. she got released from city hope and we drove straight here to see him walk in. what he did for us was incredible because they you guys donations. we have now amassed over $100,000 in total contributions. and to me that is just so humbling. and we've been unpacking 50 families live. this is the end of chapter great chapter. one was to walk across america. >> the rest of the story is to go down the list of things doctor said i would never do again. i'm christina pascucci, the santa monica pier. >> what an inspiring guy. still ahead on the kron 4

bit. stephanie, thank you, dave. >> in the south bay, a woman was hit and killed while walking on interstate 6.80 last night. it happened near capitol avenue. police say the driver remained on scene and is cooperating with officers. this is the 17th pedestrian to be killed in san jose. so far this year, overall, 30 people have been killed in traffic accidents in the area in 2022. a tragic accident on the peninsula. 2 people are dead and a 3rd person may be missing in san mateo county after a late night car crash at pescadero state beach kron. four's believed to go reports on what we know. >> why the car drove off the cliff is still unclear. but the california highway patrol does confirm. >> that a man possibly in his 40's has died. a girl was also killed. >> the search continued into the morning for a possible 3rd victim. but that person was not found in the u.s. coast guard suspended its search just before 9 o'clock in the morning. >> we're told the crash here

at prescott arrow state beach happened just before 9 o'clock friday night. the chp says the 2012 toyota tacoma driving down pescadero creek road headed toward the ocean, continue through the highway. one intersection and the beach parking lot before falling 30 feet down the cliff. the car was partially submerged in the water. >> the man was found dead about an hour after the crash. the girl located inside the car at around 1 o'clock in the morning. both victims are from freedom, california. some of things that happen in cases like this is a person could be. >> driving under influence of alcohol or drugs that could be tired. >> going to be in that those, you know, those falling out of love, those falling at the event last night. but in the way, they got to ready to drive that vehicle. >> and be ready for anything that happen. and in this case, what happened then? i'm going to see it as the investigation continues. we'll learn more

and more. either way, it's a very surprising that we lost 2 lights and possibly through the coast guard believes that this time only 2 people were inside the car. but if at any point investigators determined there was a 3rd person, they'll continue. >> their search as for the crash itself, the chp says at this point it's unclear if drugs or alcohol were factors. in san mateo county fleet of all kron, 4 news. >> the coroner's office has determined fentanyl toxicity is what caused the death of former san jose police officer day. john packer, the 24 year-old rookie officer was found dead in his milpitas home back in march. packer was a football star at san jose state before pursuing a career in law enforcement. the investigation into his death is ongoing. we will update you as more information becomes available. in the east bay. a car crashed into a traffic signal and erupted into flames. this happened at the intersection of market street in stanford avenue in north

oakland saturday. that's just a few blocks away from the san pablo avenue. firefighters had to use special equipment to get the driver out. the driver suffered burns and was taken to the hospital for treatment. we're getting a look at new video of police chasing a stolen porsche. an alameda county police say the man got behind the wheel got up to 100 miles per hour as he raced along san leandro streets before crashing. he was eventually arrested. the union representing nurses at stanford health care seal packard children's hospital have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract that could end the strike that began on monday. union reps say if approved the deal would give their members a 7% wage increase this year along with a 5% increase next april and another in april 2024. the deal also includes an increase to the nurses, retirement benefits and an extra week of vacation. for all nurses beginning in 2024. but the union members still have to vote on the deal before

anything becomes official. about 5,000 nurses at both facilities started to strike on monday over working conditions and staff shortages. people gathered benicia to remember lives lost in violent crime. a vigil happened saturday at alvarez, 9th street park families from oakland, richmond, fairfield and vallejo release balloons to honor the lives taken this vigil was part of the 4th annual survivors. speak healing vigil day of action to healing vigil day of action to mark nationa rights week. the event was one of dozens in cities across the country. a daring rescue unfolded above san francisco streets. fire crews climbed 80 feet up the transbay terminal building to save a man standing at the top on saturday. they say he was experiencing what they called a behavioral emergency. thankfully, the man was not hurt and was sent safely to an emergency room. and mental health workers in the state may soon be getting a big

boost. san francisco senator scott wiener's behavioral health workforce revitalization act passed a committee vote. it would provide money for hiring and performance bonuses for mental health professionals like psychiatrist. and those would include psychiatrist and behavioral support technicians. it would also provide stipends to students who pursue a master's degree in social work and create a network to connect mental health professionals, but job openings throughout the state. if you use the google chrome browser, the company's urging you to install new software updates. this comes after google says hackers found and got into some security holes in the software. this problem affects windows mac o s lynn x and other browsers using google code. the announcement also comes as security firms worry about possible russian cyber attacks because of the united states support of ukraine. a new report shows the fbi searched electronic data without a warrant. millions of times last year.

the report says the fbi conducted as many as 3.4 million searches. a senior fbi official admitted that number may sound large, but the number of americans impacted may not be as large as the number of searches suggests. the report does not state anywhere that the searches were illegal. more than half of all searches were related to an investigation involving russian threats. for your health. this morning, the cdc continues to investigate cases of severe hepatitis in young kids. so far there have been 18 cases reported in at least 4 states with the first cases in the u.s. coming from alabama of those alabama cases. the patients were from different parts of the state. they did not have any contact with each other and all were considered generally healthy with no immune system, weakness or history. other previous covid infection, vomiting and diarrhea were among the most common symptoms among patients, the cdc has issued a health advisory. this

week. the biden administration announced the fda will move forward with rules to ban the sale of menthol cigarettes. washington correspondent raquel martin has the details. health organizations like the american lung association say the ban. >> could prevent thousands if not millions of americans from growing addicted to cigarettes. we're truly excited. erika sward with the american lung association is applauding the fda's effort to ban the sale of menthol flavored cigarettes. menthol cigarettes are very dangerous. menthol cigarettes make it easier for the poisoning to go down. sort says the proposed rule is years in the making fda's scientific advisory committee recommended that menthol cigarettes be removed from the marketplace to the obama administration and comes after a decades old battle with tobacco companies who fought to keep the flavor on the market. this is something the industry will not go quietly into the night about.

and she's right already. groups like british american tobacco say they plan to fight against the proposed rule saying in a statement we do not believe the public science supports regulating menthol cigarettes differently from non menthol cigarettes. thursday, white house press secretary jen psaki defended the administration's efforts. its estimate the limiting menthol and tobacco products could prevent up to 650,004 1000 deaths over the next 40 years and pushed back against criticism. the rule could result in the arrest of black americans who disproportionately used the products because rule would go after manufacturers and people who sell not individuals to smoke menthol cigarettes. it is not just health organizations applauding the band. civil rights groups say for decades now, the tobacco industry has targeted black communities disproportionately black americans use menthol products. of course, it could take nearly a year for the rule to be finalized. for now in washington, raquel martin, back to you. attorney general

rob bonta is investigating what he calls a global plastic pollution crisis. >> and he's going after exxon mobil. he says the oil and gas company ran a decades long campaign deceiving the public about the harmful environmental effects of plastic. that's despite a warning the company received about those effects in the 1970's bonta says most plastic products which are made from petroleum are not recyclable and end up in landfills or in the ocean. exxonmobil rejected the allegations saying it is working with the public other industries and the state of california to advance recycling. >> and what kind of recycling yesterday's forecast temperatures a little bit more ambitious and those inland spots reaching about 80 will keep those winds will. they're not as intense next week is a springtime week with ups a
