noticeable, though. it is very, very thin. here's the ground view of the golden gate. let's step up a little bit aloft. there you have it kind of from a distance. and again, it's very, very thin and it will mix out expected to do so fairly quickly for today. even those coastal locations, although coastal numbers will be a little cooler today. going to jump all the way to tomorrow morning. and that's it. we don't see really the fall returning as we started to our heat spike through much of the week ahead. the traffic coming in off the pacific. we do see a system in the northwest, but after that passes, it's more high pressure for us for the entire week that delivers the nice heat spike. that means those numbers inland are going to be in the mid to upper 90's, maybe taking a race and 100 for a couple selective spots by wednesday. 53 oakland, 49 going on for san francisco. 62 for coming up to a mixture of 40's and 50's up to the north bay. 54 for san jose temperature contrast. we're pretty close to where we were this time from yesterday and expect that to continue later on today by 2 o'clock

about 83. talk more about this heat spike coming up in just a bit. stephanie, thanks very much. day. >> our top story this morning. a wildfire continues to burn in vacaville the fire district. they're saying forward growth of the quail fire has stopped for now. the fire is near quail canyon road in pleasant valley. road. an evacuation warning is still in effect, meaning people in that area should be ready to leave. so far that fire has burned 135 acres and is 45% contained? this fire sparked around 3.45 yesterday afternoon. rush paul, some hot takes a look at the firefighting effort. >> when nathan hardy and his family, it's a job another walk by. helicopters using his pond to flow down the quail fire election. quite a bit of action. the retired firefighter with the san francisco fire department is one of many residents along quill canyon road in breaux,

northants lonoke county. >> i never really, you know, saved us is the fact that we keep all the things cleared away from our building. >> it was all hands on deck for fire crews saturday afternoon to slow the spread of the fire. fueled by like grasses. and with each fire crews trying to get the upper hand on the flames before the wind shifted. same old and for many people living in this canyon, it's the same old thing that we went through 21 2 years ago. many of these homeowners went through the destructive lnu lightning complex fire in summer of 2020 and it took a few months to put out the differences and point it all the fire crews were being used all over thep state and we didn't get any help there. this time. it's a different and crews using every resource to slow the blaze. but i'm glad i could help save people call by >> tremendous effort by

firefighters there and the flames in vacaville, not the only ones to break out in our region this weekend. these are photos from a grass fire on your bubble in a road in san jose. cal, fire crews got this fire under control quickly and stopped it from spreading and in antioch, take a look at this 5 acre fire that burned near south would weigh. these are photos from contra costa county fire. crews kept the damage limited to a wood fence, but firefighters do remain on high alert today with temperatures warming up. coming up at 9.15, chris bachman joins us live in studio. he is the fire marshal and assistant fire chief with the contra costa county fire protection district. we're going hear from him on how his crews are responding to this year's fires and what people can do to keep themselves and their home safe. we do want to take you over to camila, though. she's got an update for us on the warriors. they're taking on the mavericks in game 3 of the western conference finals. the warriors won the first 2 games. now the series moves to dallas for fans here in the

for another check of the weather with meteorologist dave sparh a day. hey, good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. and the weather is going to be one. you're going to want to escape some of this to >> area rivers and also at the bay and at the ocean where temperatures will be rising all over. this is what we're looking at right now. the golden gate bridge, this wispy fog looks like it's just about mixed out east bay shoreline. pretty much clear in view. now we're starting to light up the hills. you can see son getting a little higher in the sky for the traffic off the pacific. the highest not yet positioned in the ideal location that we will see it this week as we see a real aggressive heat spike coming our way. push those temperatures. well in the 90's through much of the balance of next week. so this week coming up, 67 for any off most of the east bay temperatures are in the 50's. 49 going on for fremont. 48 santa rosa. 48 also from the bottle. 49 for san francisco. so up to tahoe, while we're doing all of this there warming up as well. it's like

a summertime pattern. they're short sleeve shirts. if you're headed up there, 74 for tuesday, wednesday, 77, this translates to more melting. that's going to fill up some of those rivers a little bit down stream as we go into this week. have your first big hammer of a weeklong heat spike like this. now, before that all happens, one thing we do have before it gets here, we're going to have our typical afternoon on shore winds and that's again being driven from inland heating. however, when that high gets placed over the right spot, it does turn those winds off. so the one consolation we have today and even into tomorrow are those onshore winds? the next thing to look out for when the winds start picking up a little bit, that will probably be by wednesday night into thursday. that's the breaking down of the high and the ushering in of our next system through all that. and that usually comes in from a direction in from the west typically released the southwest. so for today, much the same 70's for the bay 80's happening in london this week. warming quickly, 90's inland through thursday and we're talking mid to even upper 90's at that. and then next week

one year since the mass shooting at the vta railyard in san jose on may. 26 a worker opened fire inside a building killing 9 people last year. the vta plans to honor the victims this thursday with ight vigil and ceremony at the rail yard. the ceremony begins at 6 thursday, 6.30, thursday morning. this is body cam video on one of the officers responding to that deadly shooting that happened last year. now the ceremony will only be for employees and their families. the ceremony will also be live streamed. happening today. there's a gun buyback event in milpitas hosted by santa clara county. you can turn in guns at the milpitas community center. you don't have to give your name or show id. the city will give people $100 for a handgun and $200 for a ghost gun or assault weapon. the goal is to get more guns off the street. the event runs from 09:00am to 01:00pm at the

milpitas community center on east calaveras boulevard. in the east bay, a demonstration unfolded outside of the chevron richmond refinery on saturday. protesters accuse the company of causing environmental damage and violating human rights kron four's. amanda hari has more. >> this is actually the 9th annual anti chevron day protest. it's a global event and protesters do it every year right before chevron's annual stockholder meeting to draw attention to the company's impact on the environment that meeting happens on the last wednesday of may each year. so chevron designed a system to pollute and poison. dozens of people gathered outside the gates of chevron's refinery in richmond to protest what they believe are crimes committed by the oil company. stand up to call out. >> pollution, human rights violations and demand accountability from chevron's management co. >> and board of directors. protesters created this

baby formula is on the way the president authorized shipments this week to combat the shortage in the u.s.. >> and the first shipment from europe is expected to land in the u.s. later today. basil, john reports.

long-term. so the city kind of short term wind event this afternoon and tomorrow, 67, antioch, most east bay readings are all pretty much in the 50's. the north bay still holding on to 48 for santa rosa. a cool 47, though, at half moon bay with 50 san francisco. so they'll be a little stubborn along the coast, though, with those temperatures war in the 60's rather than the 70's. we'll see later this week. so watching things play out. this is the high pressure is moment as it breaks down. look at that. that looks a bit more juicy. then we're probably going to get will probably get just enough to dirty the car. but more importantly, moisten up the lower atmosphere kind of act, a little bit of fire repellents so that we can definitely use with that. and then things go back to a clear patch again, as things go up and around the next high pressure zone, 4 zone forecast for today. 68 san francisco. but at the coast, we're still in the 60's pacifica and a chilly fit. a 59 by comparison. got some 70's poking out here along the peninsula. 75 foster city got 80 for palo alto. 81. you can see down to the south and 77

mountain view. meanwhile, in the south bay still only in the lower 80's, we're not moving yet. 82 san jose in cupertino, santa clara, 81 got the upper 70's east bay shoreline. the 80's are coming starting tomorrow. got 84 for livermore tri valley. you'll see maybe 85 for walnut creek. 87 in concord, but still some 90 75 going on for oakland, 73 go. 89 by monday and then it's 90's. tuesday, wednesday. here's the breakdown on thursday. probably seen the cloud cover perhaps by nightfall. and it's 70's for highs inland and at the coast. we don't seem to get to around 70 or so. so that's the one area that won't be experiencing this peak heat spike. stephanie. much dave. >> for your health this morning, different types of fat on your body can be linked to different diseases, including heart disease and high blood pressure. our health expert karen owoc is

here with tips and how to lose that fat and lower the risk of some of those diseases. good morning, karen. good morning, stephanie. so walk us through how you know, the different how different body types should be thinking approaching the treatment to body fat. right? so we have the pear shape and then we have the apple shape. >> so the pear shaped people tend to carry their weight below the equator that in their hips there, said there and thighs. now, that's a different type of fat. there's the also apple shape people who tend to carry a right there in the abdomen. so those people, they are more apple show the shape. the research shows that those people have tend to have a higher risk for chronic diseases. so it's because of the fact that these fats are different. >> and so walk us through how these different how facts are different in how they

accumulate on the body differently. >> so the one set for the the a pear shape people. they tend to be more of the sep. 2 taney is fat. so that is if you've ever had a skin folds, that that caliber a protest, think of this as subcutaneous fat. it's right underneath. they scan and right above the muscle. so it's stuff that you can actually pinch and measure. so that's the subcutaneous fat, the other fat that's in your belly tends to be the this real fat. this ruh is the the internal organs that this is the one that's really dangerous. so this real fat tends to embed around this real organs, the heart, the lungs, the liver, and then also there's a sheet in front of what's apron like tissue that's in friend of these organs. and that will tend to fill up with fat if you've

ever notice some people that have the the beer belly, it tends get very hard. and that's the dangerous, visceral fat. >> and what sort of diseases are linked to visceral fat and why is it a health risk? >> so we have the links are heart disease, high blood pressure, high blood pressure because of the district fat actually secrete a protein that constricts blood vessels also cancers, cancers of the prop of the pancreas, the, the colon esophagus, dementia and also diabetes. and i really want to emphasize dementia because we think of dementia, something that kind of just happens to us. but it's very tightly associated with our lifestyle. so the kaiser permanente did a study of 6500 men and women and followed them for 37 years. and they they concluded that more visceral fat because a higher risk of dementia.

>> and and how much belly fat is too much? does it that's a good so way to measure you can actually get an accurate measurement through an mri scan. but it's the best way easy way is to just measure your waist line. so measure it right there at the billikens few your belly button and then go right around and your your waist measurement should be no more than half of your your height in inches. so if you are 72 inches taller and your your. abdomen should be no more than 36 inches. and in in the waistline can finner people also have a visceral fat as well. >> thinner people. they they research on these thinner people. and yes, they do have can have this real fat, even

with people that followed there, healthy diet. so a lot of it is tied to inactivity as well as as diet and heredity. all right. so >> the big question for me then is, you know what i mean? how can how can we lose the belly fat? >> so what at number one, reduce alcohol intake. that's that's how they got that nicknamed beer belly. because when you drink a lot of alcohol that actually that liver has to metabolize the alcohol. so it's not doing its job. the metabolizing fact. so it starts to store and then also they found that eating 10 grams of fiber soluble fiber a day. >> like oatmeal, oatmeal beans are a good source to sell. double fiber. that helps to reduce the a visceral fat by 4% eating less processed foods

because are filled with salt and fats and trans fats. those of the things that are going to contribute to at domino fat also stress is really important because stress increases the the release of cortisol, which is associated with belly fat. so belly fat. also this this fat also see creates cortisol. so you're kind on this vicious cycle of so creating it as well as as storing it. so real important to reduce your stress and get plenty of sleep. >> yeah. and i think exercise is also going to help a lot with that, too, as well. >> actually, that's a really important component. so moving more, i just have to emphasize, you know, if you are carrying a lot of belly fat, it is so important to to start addressing it today to reduce that because of its linked to dementia and heart disease and all these chronic diseases that we don't really

and early this morning. it's a great to be here in person, stephanie. so, you know, hospitalizations covid cases seems like they're reaching some pretty high rates compared to the rest of the state. did we get to this point here in the bay area because we were doing so well, the beginning of this? well, stephanie, there's several reasons. i think many people think the first that we're kind of victims of own success. we really exposed to the virus were sheltering in place for working at home. >> we could afford to look at home and now with highly transmissible it's not working as much, but one would say that we did it at the right time. i know what all these beacon probably engage in life knowing how to protect ourselves. i think the second reason is people think we're doing more testing compared to parts of the that's probably less of an important reason to me. the 3rd is that there are lot of people from other areas coming to the area. so when no longer be area risk where massachusetts for us in new york risk and the world's risk because they all coming here to visit and then 4th lee. i

think you know where going on with enthusiasm like the rest of the and not different from and anyone else. >> you know, one of the best ways that we've heard from medical experts like yourself to put that we can protect ourselves is getting a booster shots right? so we know that the boosters for kids between the ages of 5 to 11 was just approved. they became available in the bay area this weekend. now, this is something that parents should be rushing out to get their kids. yeah, frankly, if i had a 5 to 11 year-old, i would go out and get that as soon as possible. and the reason is that. >> that's how the vaccine works best. you give it a 1, 2 punch in any way, a few months and remind immune system. i think that also because the kids 5 to 11 vaccines, one-third the adult dose. i think if anybody needs that, it's them. and also we need to build a wall of immunity. so even though kids not has not like adults don't have as much serious disease. we still have

to immunize them so that it protects the household. >> with the reassurance for parents who might be a little apprehensive about the safety of this. well, the safety profile is fantastic. again, it's a lower dose. that's the same goes for the booster shot. >> and there are no my day meyer kind. itis cases or heart inflammation because it tracks with what they ate purity. older teens or young adult males and the cdc also recommended that seniors get their next booster >> what is the message for folks of the older generation who might be a little bit hesitant about this? well, i think first of all, stephanie, it's really important for everyone to get their first booster shot. >> i think the debate is being lost with booster in general. but make no mistake about it. that for was to shop for events, deaths and we have that rescinded real micron, the second booster shot. i think given the current wave in the country, the feds are

recommending that for those over 50 and those over 12 way immune compromised. >> you know what should what kind of conversation should say? i be having with my my parents who are in their 60's about getting this booster? >> well, i think we have a new variant of this is a new time. it's completely safe. there's no risk of immune exhaustion or more side effects and particularly for seniors. it not just prevents infection. it protects >> and let's talk a little bit too about this new antiviral pill treatment paxlovid with the safety around that and is that are recommended for can anyone take it? >> for smallpox of it is really a game changer. it's a pill. it's readily available. just yes. last night a prescribed it to someone you taken within the first 3 to 5 days. you prevent hospitalization by as much as 89%. it's pretty much for most people. when you look at the criteria, but time is money

need to get that diagnosis. you need to get that prescription early enough and, you know, with paxlovid, we can have a very, very few that seats. if everyone uses that appropriately. i remember when i was first covering paxlovid when it was being tried out in different hospitals. >> they were specifically looking to use it on patients with more severe cases of covid. can someone with a milder case of covid ask their doctor for a prescription for this? yes, definitely. that's the myth of paxlovid. unlike the other treatments and early treatment, i think it's really democratizing treatment and more people are eligible for it. then they believe scything people should have a pox plan. they should talk their primary care physicians before they get infected. they should check that drug interactions. all right. and we still have some time here. so i like to ask you about monkey pox. all right. this is something that we're starting to hear a lot more about in the news. i believe there was at least one case detected in the u.s. on the east coast.

>> you walk us through how concerned you are about this. i'm curious about monkeypox, but not very concerned, but it's a very different situation that hasn't been seen. >> with monkeypox virus before, i mean that it's a multi-use. the affecting people in multiple countries without having been exposed to places where comes from, which is central and east and west africa. what sort of symptoms come with monkeypox that people should so it's sort of looking like covid fever muscle fatigue, but 2 weeks later wants 2 weeks later. you get this on mistake, a bull rush that starts in the trunk was to the extremities and looks like a pox of fluid filled blister. oh, goodness. that does not sound pleasant at all. >> but as far as we know, is it? >> deadly disease? well, the mortality rate in this particular strain is less than one percent. and we haven't had any fatalities in the u.s.. we have monkeypox outbreak and and prairie dogs and the people take care of them. back in 2003 when more

than 70 people got infected because they were handling these animals had will cause with these african rats in the same since then, you know, no one has really done poorly. they haven't needed any anti viral. so special treatment, but awareness is everything because it is transmissible on this. new monkeypox was seeing must be transmitted from human to human, even though it's not usually a thing. and so what is the big public health and safety message for families here in the bay area? >> i yeah, i think recognition is key contacting your health authorities. if you notice it because but not panic, not changing pines. if you're traveling, don't worry to change it. i'm definitely not panicked about it. i'm just curious. and what is the reminder that you'd like to share with folks here in the bay area when it comes to covid? covid isn't going anywhere we soon. i think you have to think about abc's air wear your mask. be booster shots. definitely important. as we said, see, think about i

believes the problem is linked to some jif peanut butter products. 14 people in 12 states reported getting sick because of this outbreak. investigators traced the salmonella cases to a plant in lexington, kentucky, run by the jm smucker company. peanut butter can have a 2 year shelf life. the fda says those infected with salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. we're just one week away from memorial day. the unofficial start to summer this year triple a predicts more than 39 million people will travel for the holiday weekend. nearly 35 million will hit the roadways and another 3 million are expected to fly. if you're one of the many hitting the roads, aaa just released its list of the best and worst times to dry. take a look at this. if you're living leaving town on thursday, the worst time to be on the road is between 11 is between 01:00pm and 08:00pm. so that's a big chunk of time. you're better off leaving early in the morning or late

again, trailing on the east bay shoreline, which again, will make up for this afternoon, 81 by 1 o'clock by for 83. so it's still pretty much of an 80's game today, but we're into the 90's for the ballot next week. we'll get all of that coming up in just a bit. stuffy looking forward to it. thank you, dave. >> our top story this morning. a wildfire continues to burn in vacaville. we have new numbers from cal fire to tell you the quail fire is now. 53% contained the fire district. they're saying forward growth of the quail fire has stopped for now. the fire is near quail canyon road in pleasant valley. road. an evacuation warning is still in effect, meaning people in that area need to be ready. so far that fire has burned 135 acres of this fire sparked around 3.45 yesterday afternoon. garage takes a look at the firefighting effort for us. >> when nathan hardy and his family, it's a job. another walk by. helicopters using his

pond to flow down the quail fire. watch action. the retired firefighter with the san francisco fire department is one of many residents along quill canyon road in breaux nor than county. >> i never really, you know, saved us is the fact that we keep all the things cleared away from our buildings. >> it was all hands on deck for fire crews saturday afternoon to slow the spread of the fire. fueled by like grasses. and when. with each dropped fire crews trying to get the upper hand on the flames before the winds shifted. same old and for many people living in this canyon, it's the same old thing that we went through this. and 21 2 years ago, many of these homeowners went through the destructive lnu lightning complex fire in summer of 2020 and it took a few months to put out the differences and pointed all the fire crews were being used all over the state and we didn't get any help there. this time. it's a different story. and crews

>> fire season is now year round for us in california. unfortunately, the bay area is no stranger to wildfire. joining me now to talk about that and the ways you can keep yourself safe is chris yourself safe is chris bachman, fire marshal and costa county fire protection district. thanks so much for joining us this morning. thank you for having us. you know, things are already ramping up pretty quick. here we are. we just reported on the quail fire. 53% containment. so some good news in terms of the progress being made on that, your own fire crews were just fighting a bit of a brush this week out in concord. how concerned are you about how things are turning out this year? >> we're already seeing an increase in our exterior fires this year. in fact, are up. 25

1% from where they were last year at this time. wow. what we're really also noticing this time of year, we're starting to run those multiple arms, which we had, as you mentioned in concord, that turned into a second alarm fire. and we burned approximately 30 acres before we got it under control. and that particular fire is completely extinguished at this point or yes, it took us about an hour to stop for progress. and then we're out there for another 2 or 3 up >> and what sort of conditions are? almost aggravating or creating more wildfires this year compared to last year around this time last year. >> what we saw on friday we have that low humidity and then with some decent wind gusts and high winds, a fire starts us want just really takes off. and that's what happened on friday. will pass the fire started relatively small. but within a matter of 15, 20 minutes quickly, escalated to go 10 acres, 15 acres and then 30 acres. all

24. we brought it under control. you know? >> we've seen some pretty bad wildfires over the last several years. in 2018, there was the campfire up in paradise. and in that in that area, why does this keep obviously, conversations have been had about wildfire. danger. >> yes, so this year we're seeing earlier than normal because of the lack of precipitation that we had over winter months. and now we're already experiencing some of those, you know, dry, hot, windy days that when the fire does rather than it just being contained to maybe a half acre, we extinguished with one unit. that's where those multi alarm fires typically occur. and you'll see us out there for several hours before we're able to get get to mop up and get under control. >> and really, so it's the it's a it sounds like of the weather really has a lot to do with it. and the temperatures out there. >> yes, the lack of part its precipitation that we had over the winter months along you know, when we get those red

flag days or no friday wasn't even a red flag day for us. but it was very low humidity. and we had some pretty good sustained wind gusts. and that's what caused that fire is quite so quickly. >> so what are your fire crews working on right now in terms of gearing up? are you adding extra staffing this over the next few weeks in anticipation of more possible wildfires. >> so we do have through the next several weeks, actually through the rest of the season. now it will be staffed along with we've got our crew 12 or hand crew fully staffed up now for the remainder of the year. we've done lot of mitigation work. in fact, this weekend, we're doing some shipping days out and richmond area last couple weeks. we've done some shade. if you break out in the state parks with a murder in the fire department we're done controlled burning. practice was some firing operations out in rodeo on the phillips 66 property

>> do you also have extra staff on hand in case a wildfire would have ignite in another part of california? would you have to deploy with jeff people standing by ready to deploy to that particular wildfire if it were to happen in another part of the state. >> yes, we called well within the 9 bay area counties. we call that initial attack. and what we would do is we send our our crews that are at the station ready to go. we would send them out on that initial attack if they were requested and then we would start calling in more resources or are back fill that position if it was necessary. but that's how we're able to typically keep our fire small is we rely on each other along with cal fire to bring those resources in immediately to extinguish the fire before it gets out of control. >> what is the guidance for people living in the bay area? we're watching these flames start to pop up all across the state. >> we ask that they do their part. are they ready for wildfire? and that's 2 part one. do they have a go bag to? they have everything ready to. they haven't evacuate their

evacuation routes planned along with have they created that defensible space around their house just by making sure the the dead and dying vegetation is removed around their remove the leaves out of their gather gutters. there's no leaves or any vegetation up on their roofs. really gives us a lot better chance if a fire were to come up on their property to keep it before it gets into the structure. >> and what is the message to for people when an evacuation order comes down? i know from my own personal experience covering wildfires. sometimes there's is hesitation from people when when that evacuation order comes down, all you know why i want to leave my home. i think i can fight this fire off on my own. what's the message? >> our message is that if evacuation order goes out that you listen to it immediately. you're prepared and don't wait. it's when you hear over and over some of these big fires, typically the residents that got in trouble are the ones that hesitated or felt that it wasn't quite bad enough for them to leave yet?

the event runs from 09:00am to 01:00pm at the milpitas community center on east calaveras boulevard. in the east bay, a demonstration unfolded outside of the chevron richmond refinery on saturday. protesters accuse the company of causing environmental damage and violating human rights kron four's. amanda hari has more. >> this is actually the 9th annual anti chevron day protest. it's a global event and protesters do it every year right before chevron's annual stockholder meeting to draw attention to the company's impact on the environment that meeting happens on the last wednesday of may each year. so chevron designed a system to pollute and poison. dozens of people gathered outside the gates of chevron's refinery in richmond to protest what they believe are crimes committed by the oil company. stand up to call out. >> pollution, human rights violations and demand accountability from chevron's management co.
