big change playing out over the course of this weekend. as we get back to come, the seasonality here and maybe a little stray, isolated shower thrown in for good measure into tomorrow. again, here's half moon bay. nice sunrise we see over our backs here a little bit. meanwhile, we do have that excessive heat warning. still with us. a county, even though the heat advisory is over for the north and the east bay, still temperatures will be popping through the 90's. it looks like for today. temperature check for you. this is currently now 76 antioch. that's something we see during the summer months. isn't it? 72 going on for concord? 66 livermore, east bay shoreline, even in the middle 60's. 67, san jose, just to give you a quick contrast here, we're actually a couple degrees better than yesterday, but we won't be as hot this afternoon for a lot of other real estate, some high cloudiness, just a kind of toss. and there you can't make it out too much from this imagery. but some of our pictures kind of show that as we can see off to the distance winds, they're not very active yet. we expect a little bit of an uptick this afternoon more than we saw

before. that makes every difference in the world world to get some of those winds cooking a bit back to those that fog. again, whatever we have will mix out, watch what happens tonight. yeah, into tomorrow, it's going to be a different story as we get into tomorrow with some scattered clouds. 86 at 11 by 2.92. racing ahead for more 90's in the inland valleys will more on that hot forecast coming up in a bit. stephanie, thanks very much, dave. happening today, the nationwide call for action against gun violence continues. >> rallies and marches expected to take place across the country and right here in the bay area. kron four's camila barco is live at one of those rallies happening in walnut creek and camila. today's marches are happening as we've seen a surge in mass shootings across the country. >> exactly, stephanie. so yeah. today in walnut creek, people will be marching for change and taking a stand against gun violence. and like you said, stephanie, this is part of a bigger movement. we're going to be seeing

marches across the country because this is part of march for our lives. this is an organization that's led by students to demand stronger gun laws. now idea first came after a former student started shooting with a semiautomatic rifle at a florida high school in 2018. 17 people died on february 14th of that year. and with the recent mass shootings in buffalo and uvalde texas organizers are once again calling for change when it comes to gun control. organizers want to see congress pass meaningful changes to gun like having a national registry system ban assault weapons and make policies that disarm gun owners who pose a risk to the public. now, just recently, the house passed a bill in response to the recent mass shootings. >> it would raise the age fo limit for purchasili a semi automatic rifle and prohibit the sale of the mitt ammunition magazines with a capacity of more than 15 rounds. but, stephanie, the

odds of that bill passing. >> the senate are low. however, people today are rallying for change around gun violence. and there's going to be several marches across the bay area. here's a few. take a look at your screen at 10:00am there's going to be marches at the pacific. a community center, burlingame city hall. frank ogawa plaza in oakland and benicia green at noon. there will be a march at the san francisco city hall and at 05:00pm there will be another event in mountain view. i gained weight part, but back out live here in walnut creek in the march starts at 9 o'clock this morning. it is free to the public. anyone can come and again, stephanie, this is >> a chance for people to make their voices heard and take a stand against gun violence to you. >> camila, thank you so much for that live report. important information. oakland police host a gun buyback event today in an effort to get guns off the streets. the guns to gardens event starts at 10:00am and runs to 02:00pm

national aids memorial quilt goes on display at golden gate park. >> with the opening ceremony set for 9.30, this morning. the event does and that 5. now this is been 35 years. it's now been, i should say other 35 years since the first panels of the quilt were stitched together during some of the darkest days of the aids pandemic. now, 50,000 panels of the quilts are shown to hundreds of communities every year. also happening today, in-person pride celebrations return to san mateo county. they started 11 this morning at central park in downtown san mateo, the festive, the cif as deputies go until 5 tonight. this is free family-friendly event that will include live entertainment and food trucks. this is the event's 10th anniversary and the theme this year is still here and still proud. kron 4 is also celebrating pride month. you can join us for our bay area pride, special love will keep us together. hosted by our own john shrable in taylor

>> the nationwide gas prices now $5 a gallon. that's according to triple a the national average price jumped $0.19 in just the past week alone. that's up one $1.93 from this time. last year. so what's behind that price hike? americans drive more in the summer months. so demand is up. there is the ongoing invasion of ukraine by russia and issues tied to the pandemic, continue to limit the amount of oil that can be refined. right now, california is seeing some of the highest prices in the country with average prices coming in at $6. and $0.43 a gallon in our state. so let's take a look at prices here in the bay area. you'll pay the most in sandra fell $6 and $0.66 is the average there right now. and san francisco, you'll pay $6.63 and you can see the prices for napa. santa rosa and oakland and san jose on

your screen right now. $6.54 for san jose. so certainly not cheap. and as gas prices soar, you may be tempted to invest in a hybrid or electric car. the biden administration wants to build 500,000 ev charging stations to meet the growing interest. paul gerke takes a look at our nation's car charging infrastructure. >> congratulations. you're the owner of a brand new electric >> sweet. what now? we've grown up in a gas powered world. i know where to get an oil change and where to fill up. but where and how do i charge this thing? >> most of the owners plug in at home overnight, even if they don't have a garage that's because charging in the rain is perfectly safe. no matter where you do it, you're using a level one or level 2 charger level. one requires no installation. you're just plugging into an outlet. your cost to fill up is only a couple bucks depending upon your electricity prices.

>> the downside is this is the slowest way to charge at 3 to 5 miles and evt range per hour. it could take a full day to fill an empty battery. that's why most people buy a level 2 device for their homes. they can ruffle a battery overnight and costs just a little more outside of the upfront cost. >> level 2 chargers are the most common in the u.s. right now. there's more than 90,000 of them. and that number grows every day they've been deployed in every state and you can find them in all sorts of locations like ikea. >> in the mall parking lot or even at gas stations. >> if you run out of range on the road, what you'll pay for a charge carries some companies offer free charging within their network. most 3rd parties charged by the kilowatt hour costing you between one $5 per hour of charging time. an 8 hour charge on a public level. 2 will come close to filling the battery of almost any ev on the market. but that's way too long to be sitting somewhere.

>> which brings us to dcf sees direct current fast chargers. these things are the future. they take an empty battery and bring it up to 80% in just 20 to 40 minutes. they cost a little more than a typical level 2 chargers, but often times the only limitation is how fast your car can take the current. it. there are more than 21,000 of these charges set up across the country already and more popping up every day. they're already commonplace enough that you might find one in a walmart parking lot. the biden administration's new plan includes a station with at least 4 of these every 50 miles. no more than one mile off the highway. >> right now, there are more than 48,000 public charging stations in the united states compared to about 145,000 gas stations considering there are about 2 million evs on the road. that's one public charger for every 41 cars. this new plan would involve a network of 500,000 chargers, a massive infrastructure project that will be essential to any

electric future. >> that was paul gerke reporting for us. and time now for another check of our weather. meteorologist dave spahr gives us a closer look at just how long temperatures are going to last for a day. a good morning, stephanie. good morning. everybody will start seeing some release release relief along the coast. thank you. fog coming in here at half moon bay and also on the bay side. we're really going to chip away at the temperatures complement so good on shore when working its magic air inland. it's still the 90's business hanging around for another day. but by tomorrow. >> oh, how things will be changing for everybody. it looks like maybe even a little tokens sprinkle here or there to sum up the dirty the car. you know, a check to those winds. we see them kind of variable around, but we're in the most part single digits to calm conditions as we're looking for. not much yet, but there is an uptick this afternoon and this evening, particularly right now we're at 78 for antioch. 66 livermore, 72 for concord, mid to lower 60's light up the east bay shoreline. so quite

mild to really warm in many spots overnight. so we're starting off a little bit on that spot. however, things are starting to change now out to sea. we have this layer marine layer that's hanging around. we show just some of that fog coming in half moon bay later today. it starts to break down. we get the onshore winds which will show you just a bit. and then as we get into tomorrow morning, some stray showers up north and then they evaporate before striking the ground. but it underscores how we're starting to get cooler here as we go into your sunday and early into next week, we'll clear that out in the wake of that system passing offshore winds i haven't seen yet, but again, on shore we got for this afternoon. it's going to start to chip away. even so the inland valleys a little this tow lot the inland and then 90's, it looks like today and then tomorrow we do the same thing yet again with the peak of the wind activity in the afternoon to the evening hours. look at all that real estate up in the north bay covered like that. good on shore. winds brings the marine larry and bangs away at those high

temperatures look ahead. we're talking about hot inland. some cooling at the bay evening breeze with those high clouds a little bit we can see here in the background tomorrow, mild, some scattered clouds and isolated sprinkle we're putting in there. it's almost cosmetic. but the temperature shock 70's and 80's going on even inland. and then for next week, sun and clouds mixture, 90's, pop and wednesday. but for everybody be in the 80's, it looks like inland for the remainder of the week. morning forecast coming up in just a bit. stephanie, thanks very much. dave. >> an update now on the effort to get baby formula on american store shelves. the white house says another 3.2 million bottles worth of formula will be flown into the u.s. by late june. it's coming from a british manufacturer. the baby formula will be distributed to big bucks and online retailers. an important in infant formula is going as quickly as it comes. here's a look at a new stock of formula coming into a grocery store in yonkers. that's in new york. 11,000 bottles of similac are on sale. there. the store

owner imported the formula from puerto rico and is trying to get more right now from germany. and a big piece of legislation could reshape the tech industry. and it's just a few steps away from becoming law. the american innovation and choice online act would ban big tech platforms like amazon, apple and google from giving preferential treatment to their own services in marketplaces. they run. so, for example, if passed, the law could prevent google from listing its own travel recommendations at the top of search results, amazon would have to rank its own products by the same criteria as its competitors. now, supporters of this bill argue the legislation would encourage competition and bring down online consumer prices. but big tech lobbyist, no surprise are fighting back. economic studies show that this legislation will increase inflation and as more and more members of congress realize the bad effects of this bill.

>> president biden met with other heads of state at the summit of the americas in la friday. unveiling a new plan to tackle illegal immigration. it's called the los angeles declaration on migration. the u.s. will partner with latin american nations to address historic amounts of people trying to enter the country. president biden requested local governments along the migration route to strengthen border security by conducting screenings and removing those who do not qualify for asylum. >> you know, we know that safe, orderly and legal migration is good for all our economies. need to halt the danger zone, all lawful ways. people are migrating. the dangerous ways. a lot of migration is not except. >> 20 latin and south american nations signed on to the president's plan. drinking a

cup of coffee a day could be linked with a lower risk of death. that's according to results from a new study. researchers looked at around 120,000 people in the uk who regularly drank unsweetened or sugar sweetened coffee over 7 years, researchers found the most benefits came for people who drink about a cup and a half. 2, 3 and a half cups of coffee a day. it's quite a lot of coffee. those people were up to 21% less likely to die during the study period. and those who did not drink coffee at all. well, doesn't really affect me because i don't drink coffee. all right. still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news, a 16 year-old killed in yet another shooting in oakland. >> one council members plan to reduce gun violence in the reduce gun violence in the city. meet a future mom, reduce gun violence in the city. a first-time mom and a seasoned pro. this mom's one step closer to their new mini-van!

welcome back to the kron. 4 morning news. let's start off this half hour with a look at our forecast. we have dave spahr standing by in the weather center. >> with the latest on all this hot weather today. a good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. and a little bit of fog creeping in here. as you can see it. half moon bay showing a little bit of a change coming our way that you'll feel even a little bit today. >> it won't be quite as hot and all locations, but you really going to start feeling around the bay and certainly the coastal locations to fog is going to work with that. now, whatever fog we have for the most part mixing out,

concordia park. oakland pd say several shots were fired from a high powered. the rifle. both the teen and a man was shot. the man is believed to be in stable condition. city officials say getting guns off of the street in oakland remains a priority. >> it's not just about getting guns off the street. it's about helping change the mindset of those who are holding the guns and picking them up so that they don't actually use that. one of the things that i'm looking at is really partnering with those who have the influence, those who have the facebook likes the social media mentions like are open base recording artists like some of those sports, you know, star as the folks about too. >> and a reminder that there is a gun buyback event happening in east oakland today. that's it 8, 9, 1, 5 international boulevard from 11:00am to 02:00pm today between $10300 will be given based on the type of gun that is turned in. in solano

county. 2.14, year-old boys are dead and a 3rd teenager injured after a crash in vacaville. the vacaville chp says the boys were on an atv on margaret lane when that atv hit went off the road and hit a tree. now this happened thursday afternoon. investigators say the 2.14 year-old boys were found dead at the scene. a 15 year-old was taken to a hospital with some injuries. the cause of this crash remains under investigation. police say, though, that impairment does not appear to be the issue here. in the south bay. san jose police seize more than 60 illegal guns from a homicide suspects home. >> the suspect boot. i was already in police custody for a deadly shooting last month in south san jose this week, san jose police searched highs home on war admiral avenue near great oaks park. police say they found more than 2 dozen assault weapons. some

of the other case. we believe that there's other victims out there. we want urge to the public to come forward. we understand it's a delicate situation, but if there are other victims there, we want to make sure that they come forward. >> i want to believe in our legal system, i want to believe that the lawyers and the dea are doing their job and investigating this the way they should. there's a lot of information that they're going to discover. >> a group of alaska as his supporters have been showing up every for every court date. the next one is june. 30th. meanwhile, harry, the lot remains out of custody as he awaits trial on charges of lewd acts with a minor. he's pleaded not guilty to those charges. happening today, nascar returns to the sonoma raceway and there are events all weekend long. >> the biggest one, the toyota save mart 3.50, happens tomorrow for the first time since the pandemic began, the race will be held at full

organization that's led by students to demand some change when it comes to gun laws. now the idea first came after a former student started shooting with a semiautomatic rifle at a florida high school in 2018, 17 people died on february 14th of that year. with that recent with the recent mass shootings in buffalo and uvalde texas organizers are once again calling for change when it comes to gun control. organizers want to see congress pass meaningful changes to gun laws like having a national registry system. they want to ban assault weapons and make policies that disarm gun owners who pose a risk to the public. now just recently, the house passed a bill in response to the recent mass shootings. it would raise the age limit for purchasing a semiautomatic rifle. and prohibit the sale of ammunition magazines with a capacity of more than 15 rounds. but, stephanie, the odds of that bill passing the senate, our low power people today, they're rallying for

every day. they're already commonplace enough that you might find one in a walmart parking lot. the biden administration's new plan includes a station with at least 4 of these every 50 miles. no more than one mile off the highway. >> right now, there are more than 48,000 public charging stations in the united states compared to about 145,000 gas stations considering there are about 2 million evs on the road. that's one public charger for every 41 cars. this new plan would involve a network of 500,000 chargers, a massive infrastructure project that will be essential to any electric future. >> really interesting stuff there. that was paul gerke reporting. an update now on the effort to get baby formula on american store shelves. the white house says another 3.2 million bottles worth of formula will be flown into the u.s. by late june. it's coming from a british manufacturer. the baby formula will be distributed to big box and

sierra. and as you can tell, there is no snow whatsoever. in fact, if you want to see the snow that remains and there's just a little bit of it, you have to go of donner pass road a couple of miles and you're not going to able to see a whole lot. >> these are the last patches of the central sierra snow pack. >> it's it's those little that are contributing some water to the soil and maybe a little bit to the streams. essentially there is no more help up here when it comes our state's water woes. >> this graph from the u.s. drought monitor released today. colorfully illustrating are bad weather conditions. those living in that maroon colored area or in the worst category exceptional drought. while our current drought is obviously not good, it has been much worse in california right now. 48 1% of california is in what's considered extreme drought. but if you go back to the summer of 2014, 58% of the state was in that exceptional category, that maroon color that we showed you, although we're far from it at the moment, the fear is we could get there. you can

for humanity. east bay, silicon valley secured this land next to the pleasant hill, bart station from contra costa county. 6 years ago. but construction of the more than 2 acres esperanza place affordable housing development here has been delayed several times until now due to the pandemic and supply chain this week, the nonprofit organization resuming its famous blitz building for the first time in 3 years. when esperanza place is complete. it will include 42 homes for low to very low-income families. we've been living on our home for 11 years in morgan hill, california, elaine hayes and her daughter beth, are paying it forward, donating their time to help with construction coinciding with habitat for humanity's annual women's leadership. build a personal project for them knowing they benefited from other similar generosity 11 years ago. for those of us that are low-income and very low income or pretty invisible.

you. days. >> happening today, the nationwide call for action against gun violence continues. >> rallies and marches expected to take place across the country and here in the bay area, as we've seen a surge in mass shootings across the country. kron four's camila barco reports from one of those rallies in walnut creek. >> people are beginning to gather here in walnut creek at the civic park to march for change and take a stand against gun violence. this is part of a bigger movement across the country called march for our lives. it's an organization that's led by students to demand stronger gun laws. the idea first came after a former student started shooting with a semi automatic rifle at a florida high school in 2018, 17 people died with the recent mass shootings in buffalo and uvalde texas. organizers are once again calling for change when it comes to gun control. organizers want to see congress pass meaningful changes to gun laws like

having a national registry system. they want to ban assault weapons and make policies that disarm gun owners who pose a risk to the public. now, just recently, the house passed a bill in response to the recent mass shootings. it would raise the age limit for purchasing a semiautomatic rifle and prohibit the sale of ammunition magazines with a capacity of more than 15 rounds. but the odds of that bill passing the senate are low. we spoke to one of the organizers from today's event in walnut creek. here's what she had to say personally. i think it's kind of embarrassing that the adults haven't done anything about it. but students are the ones that stepped up and are willing to make a difference. >> as a high school student, i think it's really important that we keep our schools safe places. it's so scary knowing that any day could be any one of us with the school shooting going on, especially how often they're happening in the united states right now. and i felt like it was my job to do something about it. that is going to be several marches across the bay area. here is a few. >> at 10:00am there's going to be marches at the pacific. a

about how effective novavax is at protecting us from covid-19. >> the trials show at least against variant that was circulating when the trial was done, it is about as effective as the other vaccines. about 90% effective in preventing illness hospitalization. a severe illness and the like. so that's very good it's another tool that it will be available in terms of prevention of covid-19. >> and so how exactly does it work? in layman's terms, i understand that this is a two-part vaccine. >> so this is a pretty standard way of making vaccines. the antigen, the part of the virus were interested in giving you immunity to is produced in the laboratory in cultures as it as it were. and then it's mixed with what's called an edge of and something that stimulates the immune system to make stronger response.

this is an approach we use a number of vaccines. it's not a new technique. and so for anyone who was hesitant about the mrna vaccines, the moderna and pfizer vaccines because it was a new technology that this might be a vaccine, that they're more willing to take and other boosters for novavax as well. >> neither the advisory committee, no fda has reviewing the information regarding boosters at the moment. >> it's a 2 dose regimen to provide immunity and whether boosters will be recommended is it's a little premature to say, but that's certainly a good and are there any key differences between the novavax vaccine and the one being offered by moderna and pfizer johnson, johnson. >> as i said, the ftc is about the same. as far as we know, the safety profile is similar >> it's a it's a currently a 2

dose regimen. and then so i think the main difference is, as i've said, we certainly heard from people who say they've been waiting for this vaccine because of their anxieties about the mrna vaccines and for for anyone who's been on the fence and waiting to get the covid vaccine this, this might be one that that they're willing to to accept and that would allow us to increase vaccine coverage in the and professor, we know that novavax is being used already in some countries overseas, like the philippines, india, south korea, the u k. >> so why is this authorization only now happening for us in the u.s.? well, i think it's fair to say the united states has the most rigorous requirements for approval of new drugs and vaccines, particularly vaccines, which is what i know about >> and it's just taken a while for the company to finish the trial and the result share the results with with fda and its advisory committee. so while

some would have liked it to be available sooner. i think problem was rushing these things quickly through approval, faster is that people have concerns about whether corners were whether whether everything was done that needed to be done. so i think the advantage and doing it the right way is that people can take confidence and any side effects from the novavax vaccine. >> all the actions have side effects, just like all drugs have side effects. and so no one should say that there are no side effects. the overwhelming majority of side effects are the kind of thing you would expect in the day or 2 and getting a shot which is a sore my perhaps a little bit of a laser fatigue and all of that clears up after a day or 2. so people i think are pretty familiar. adults has gotten the pneumonia op door, an influenza shot should be pretty familiar those kinds side effects in terms of the

get worse if the state does not step in to help. kacey montoya has the story. >> emt's are one missed shift away from being in poverty. >> ryan walters is a longtime emergency medical technician or emt. he's also a union rep fighting for an increase in wages across the state. >> i have spent 14 years on the job and over 36,000 hours in the field. and i make 16 25 an hour. >> although emt's face dangerous working conditions and raise to situations that could mean life or death, their paychecks don't reflect their daily responsibilities. according to the bureau of labor statistics, emt's in california make around $17 an hour or just over $36,000 a year. >> lots law enforcement folks start out on the ambulance. fire department. folks start on the ambulance as well as nurses and doctors. so, yeah, it is a good window to a lot of different disciplines.

>> their low salaries and rising costs of living are forcing many to leave the medical field behind. in many cases, they can walk into fast food restaurants right now with no experience and are in the same for more as they would in an entry level ems position. melissa harris runs and serve a private ambulance company serving los angeles county. she says they're short-staffed and can't afford raises for emt's because they aren't getting reimbursed enough by the state for medical transports which make up about 40% of her business. and it's very difficult for us to pay our employees a lot because we haven't had an increase of 22 years. in fact, we had decreased in 2013 for 10%. >> harris says it costs around $375 per medical transport. but the state pays less than half of that. they pay $111. so they rank 46 out of 50 of the lowest paid. >> other states pay double triple 4 times as much for their medical patients.

>> a coalition of labor unions across the state has been asking lawmakers for help hoping part of california's 97.5 billion dollar budget surplus announced by governor newsom this year will be used to fund first responders, increasing their medical reimbursement rates for the first time in more than 2 decades. we want to be able to pay our people wage. that's reasonable. >> and be able to retain and attract new workers, keep people in the in the workforce. >> that was kacey montoya reporting for us. we'll have more news right after this. looks like we're going to go to straight to our next story here. a new drought monitor report shows most of the state is in a severe drought or worse. a big reason for the problem is the lack of snow over the past few winners, eric rucker was in the sierra. he shows us what's left of the snow and how this drought compares to years past. >> we're in soda springs almost at the peak of elevation here in the central

sierra. and as you can tell, there is no snow whatsoever. in fact, if you want to see the snow that remains and there's just a little bit of it, you have to go of donner pass road a couple of miles and you're not going to able to see a whole lot. >> these are the last patches of the central sierra snow pack. >> it's it's those little aspects that are contributing some water to the soil and maybe a little bit to the streams. essentially there is no more help up here when it comes our state's water woes. >> this graph from the u.s. drought monitor released today. colorfully illustrating are bad weather conditions. those living in that maroon colored area or in the worst category exceptional drought. while our current drought is obviously not good, it has been much worse in california right now. 48 1% of california is in what's considered extreme drought. but if you go back to the summer of 2014, 58% of the state was in that exceptional category, that maroon color that we showed you, although we're far from it at the moment, the fear is we could get there. you can
