8:34 am
help from a public health standpoint it's not going to change the needle dramatically, but it's going improve things. we finally have a vaccine available for kids for me, 6 months all the way through older you finally of all americans being covered me we're think this is going to really make a major difference isn't really into areas. one is that it's going to change the quality of life, not just for the kids, but for the families. kids are going to be able to do a lot worse things now and not only the kids, but the parents are going to feel a lot more comfortable about doing things. if there's an outbreak in schools, for example, this exposure, ys, everything's going to change day care. situations will much better and so on. so the quality of life for families is going to be a lot better. the second thing in really, i think for the way, the most important is we're finally going to have children between the ages of 6 months and in 5 years, protective. this is something
8:35 am
that we haven't had for children yet. we haven't been able to protect these kids. you know, everybody thinks that they not everybody. but a lot of people think that. covid is in children. that's not the case. they're in 6 months to 4 years of age. we've had 20,000 hospitalizations and 200 deaths covid is a serious disease in all ages. 48, less serious. compared to older adults, but it's still a very serious disease. and finally we're going to have protection for these kids. i think that's just that. it really makes me very excited. >> and while we're on that topic of pediatric deaths, you know, what is your message for parents who are still on the fence about this? so they're just not comfortable with getting their kids vaccinated for covid. >> well, first of all, i understand about parents not being. solidly comfortable
8:36 am
about these new vaccines. but we've had no tremendous experience in hundreds of millions of people with backseat with these vaccines. and we know what they can do and we know their safety profile. i think, you know, if if there was no pandemic going on and this vaccine was released, i could really understand parents wanting to say will let students in time and find out how good it is. you know, typically it takes between 10 12 years to get a vaccine available for people from the time it's covered for years was the fastest with most several decades ago. so this is fast. on the other hand, we are in the midst of a pandemic. we are seeing children get sick. thousands and thousands of them. are seeing children get hospitalized in treasure. we see children dying. so we don't have that luxury of waiting. 4, 8, 12 years for all of this data to come in.
8:37 am
we have a vaccine that can protect children that it is. they said experiencing hundreds of millions of people with vaccine around the globe and we know its safety profile. and, you know, it's quite stakes. >> yes, so really the big takeaway here, it sounds like it is the best way to keep ourselves and our kids safe from covid is to get vaccinated. >> yeah, you know, that is the bottom line. we finally have a tool for these children to protect them. and we need to take advantage of it. >> all right, doctor john swartzberg with the uc berkeley school of public health. thank you so much for your insight this morning. >> you're welcome. thank you very much for asking. we'll be right back.

at never at their never more vulnerable than when they have made the brave and difficult decision to seek help and we're putting them in areas where. there's drug dealers right there. preying on people who are active in their addictions. so i think it's important for the city to recognize that we have an obligation to better support people who are seeking help. so i would like to have something that we're calling a right to recovery block or right to recovery zone. that would basically asked police that if anybody is doing drugs outside of these kinds of sober living environments or clinics that they be subject to confiscation of their trucks time. this is a priority enforcement zone. and if there's drug dealers who are out there preying on young drug addicts are trying to get help, that they would be subject to immediate arrest. so it is not compelling the police department to do anything. but it is saying that as a matter of public policy, we think this is an area that deserves priority

for enforcement >> describe that paint a picture of what this is like for us. what is it like outside of treatment centers in the city of san francisco and what's the plan when it comes to partnering with the police? well, there is a it's a block in my neighborhood, actually very close to where i live on ministry. and there was a program called them in a project, which is an abstinence space. >> recovery program and it's a residential treatment program. and right down the block is is an area that has become a magnet for drug sales and drug use and to very triggering to the people who live there. this is a great project to that's run by the department of adult probation. and they've done a lot of great work, but it's really putting people in harm's way. one tf the things that we also have to be cognizant of is a right to recovery zone isn't solely for the people who are seeking recovery. it's also for the neighborhood. it's very
9:52 am
suspicious of the kinds of programs like them in a project there neighbors were thinking, oh, this is going to be a magnet for drug dealers. so i think the city also has to be aware that if we want neighborhoods to support the kinds of facilities that we need, more of to help our city make progress on drug overdose deaths we need to win over neighborhoods. and i think the way to do that is to to make sure that we are sharing neighbors. we're going to prioritize these as areas where there's not going to be drug dealing on the street and we're going to arrest regulars if they're selling it. >> and where is this legislation now? i understand you're working with the city attorney's office on >> so i asked city attorney david chiu to begin the process of drafting legislation. i was deliberate and even a couple of things that remain to be determined. for example, is it going to be a block? is it going to be a set distance? i'd like to have some conversations with lawyers and also neighbors. the other thing that is going
9:53 am
to be important is to figure out how do we designate so that there's a visible designation of this being a right to recovery block. and then we should have some discussions about what kinds of facilities we're talking about, sober living environments and rehab services, i think are natural ones. i want to make sure that we're including supervised consumption sites and that's another kind of conversation. but i would advocate to include those. my observation, having been in city hall for a long time is the people who come in with. here's my 16 point plan and it's my way or the highway aren't very successful. what i do want have want to come forward with some ideas. but i also want to have the the the door open to people as we can talk through some of the details. so right now we're still in the drafting phase on working with neighbors and the department of public health and city attorney. you for that? and >> i want to make we're running out of time. i want to make sure we get this question in because i think this is a big talker point it looks like
