breaking up inland pretty quickly today, but it's going to be a bit more sluggish around the immediate bay in order to kind of break up. here's the shot from uc berkeley. again, the entire east bay shoreline was all covered up along with the hills as you'll notice as well. temperature check for you were pretty much mid 50's going on. and that's everywhere. even including those in the valleys to 60 antioch is kind of guy outline all this. and temperatures are pretty close to where they were 24 hours ago, just trailing a degree here. and the couple there. so in the fog department, yes, this mixes out fairly quickly by noon for most locations, including along the coast as well. it comes back again for tonight. humidity levels, by the way, pop and real high with all of this. again, nice fire retardant with all of that feels good and the breakdown for you goes like this by 11. we clear things out for us at 63. yes, very muted on these temperatures. by the way, 69 by 2 o'clock. and we're looking for more on sunday and into monday. have more on your forecast coming up in just shake. stephanie.

>> very much, dave. our top story this morning. you may have plans to hit the beach this 4th of july weekend, but local officials are warning people to please keep their eyes peeled for toxic algae in the water. kron four's gayle ong explains the possible danger to your health. >> harmful algae visible along the pakistan gregorio state beach on friday posted signs warned beachgoers against going into the creek. he should be concerned in this particular case there was a positive for >> toxic out out a down at saying of korea state park exposure to humans can cause a rash, vomiting, diarrhea, cold and flu-like symptoms. the algae also poses a threat to pets. symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, difficulty breathing and seizures or death. that's why san mateo county's director of environmental health services have therefore, she is urging people to be mindful of the water and banks of the lagoon. >> and creek through want

everyone to avoid. >> swimming in it and allowing their pets in the water or even touching it's it's not safe. >> here's another video. but the blue green algae looks like for she says these conditions that have been popping up around the bay area are most likely caused by the drought sign of bacteria and tend to grow in the warm summer months when the water is warmer and the water flow is slower. and there isn't a lot flow. >> and that the water has been sitting there. it's been stagnant for quite a while. and so the algae is growing. pretty thick laid down in that area. and we want everyone to avoid swimming in it. >> and the next water sampling event for this particular beach will take place sometime in mid august, reporting from san mateo county, gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> in the east bay, the city of oakland is gearing up in anticipation of large 4th of

july. crowds at lake merritt tomorrow and monday. the city now introducing temporary safety measures at grizzly peak. that's a popular place for people to watch fireworks. there will also be road closures around lake merritt along lakeshore avenue and grand avenue and berkeley panoramic drive will be closed on monday to non-residents from 5 to 11 at night. and some doctors are warning people about fireworks labeled safe and sane. they say even those small smart sparklers can leave third-degree burns, federal safety officials say that every single day about 280 people go to the er with injuries from fireworks and roughly half of those people affected are teenagers. as this map shows a safe and sane fireworks are allowed in just a handful of bay area cities, the safe and sane label means fireworks. do not explode or

fly around, but they can cause injuries and again, are still usually illegal in most places in the bay area. if you're caught using them where they're banned, there are hefty fines. some towns going high tech to celebrate the 4th of july. check this out. these color fully lit drones will fly and patriotic formations in some communities in california, colorado, new mexico, utah and texas. the ongoing drought in the southwest causing some towns to rethink or cancel fireworks shows because of the risk of wildfire. some companies that run drone light show say they're completely booked up due to record demand. the show's usually last up to 12 minutes using anywhere from 100 to 500 drones. pretty safe alternative and another safe option and possibly the safest way to celebrate this 4th of july in the bay. area's from the comfort of your home. kron 4. has you covered on all that? you can join the live in

amphitheater in mountain view on july. 15th. i just love waking up to the sound of that such that's so nice day has a nice ending to a kind of trails office on a cold end. so yeah. >> yeah. nice work by the budget yeah. on that. welcome back. time now for another check of the weather with what are conditions looking like outdoors right now? you stephanie, it's going to be a bit cooler as we go into this 4th of july weekend. a lot of times, you know, frequently because of the holiday inn, everything. it was going to be hot. we'll be talking about these advisories. a heat advisory heat. watch all that kind of stuff. but i'm not only because temperatures are mild with all of yes, it's the holiday weekend here, but we're also getting a lot of moisture to with this kind of business going on and helps keep things not only cool, but also damp. i know that maybe some folks always love the fog going on, but it's fire retardant. so that's good on that front, too. and this is going continue all throughout the entire weekend. so expect more this that's kind of stir typical a little bit. but to

show you the extent of this, this is not of the south bay and they've got themselves. will deck of cloud cover going on there? that too, will clear out by the afternoon. but again, lots of moisture spilling across the bay getting into some of those valleys and those inland east bay valleys, too out to sea. here we have. this will cut off low. it's going to be around for the next about 48 to 72 hours or so continued it sure that marine layer here, it's really kind of cut off from a major source moisture. but with this thicker marine layer that coastal drizzle drizzle around the immediate bay. so watch some slick roads a little bit today tomorrow, even into your monday as well. temperature check for you. mid 50's 62 checking in there for antioch future cast for you. see what i'm talking about. marine layer here. sun comes up, mixes it out. we have a bit of an afternoon breeze, too. tonight do the same process again. wish covers the whole bay again with those clouds. and look at the extent of that fog making its way into the sacramento valley. so here come those winds on shore. they will be into the 20's in the 30's. that will

help keep some of those temperatures in the inland valleys down a little bit, particularly today. we're only looking for highs into the 70's repeat rents repeat for tomorrow. as you can see back to the 20's into the 30's to key off to the east bay tomorrow afternoon and evening morning clouds, fog, drizzle, all that kind of stuff. sun and clouds mixture for this weekend. 60's and 70's for july 4th itself. we've got sun and clouds also warm, mild upper 70's near 80 happening inland for july. 4th will take it. and then into next week, bay clouds persist. we've got about 70's going on here in the mostly sunny inland 80's. and we're going to start pushing to about 90. so it looks like summer comes back from its vacation towards the end of the week. ahead today again afternoon, clearing 63 with the fog in the coastal drizzle for the san francisco. 66 oakland and then going on for san jose. 72 will do it. 76 for a high today for any oct maybe popping about 80 there for santa rosa, which is a big climb 60's along the east bay shoreline will have a little bit more on the 4 zone

forecast coming up for you later, stephanie, thanks very much, dave. and update now on a major wildfire burning in nevada county. >> the rice is fire is now at just over 900 acres and is 24% contained. the blaze injured 14 people, 13 of them. firefighters, the fire destroyed one building. fire. authorities say people from the area can start going back home but are asking everyone to please be cautious of their surroundings. nearly 400 firefighters continue to fight the rice is fire. faster and more reliable response to emergency calls. that's the promise of a newly merged fire protection district in the east bay, the contra costa county fire protection district and the east contra costa fire protection district officially became one on friday. the ceremony was held friday morning in brentwood, east contra costa fire chief brian helmick called make the moment rather historical.

more than 5,000 cases of monkeypox have been found in 51 countries. so far and many countries in africa now treating this as an emergency calling on other countries to share limited supplies of vaccines. alright least 25 confirmed case of monkeypox in the bay area. the san francisco seeing the most in the bay area with at least 16 cases. and southern california, los angeles county health officials investigating a recent uptick in monkeypox cases. those appear to be linked to 2 large parties. la county's public health director saying contact tracers are notifying everyone who attended those events. no word yet on where or when those parties were held, there are at least 30 presumptive or confirmed monkeypox cases in la county. no one from the county has died from this disease. still ahead on the kron 4 morning news, doctors warning of a possible covid-19

live shot of the east bay shoreline. all covered up was my flashlight. as you can all the way up to the shrubbery up on the hills. and scattered cloud cover with the marine layer. what we're seeing this layer. what we're seeing this in the south bay to ou friends at san jose state providing this imagery as well. so what we're looking at in the next say, 72 hours or so, this meandering low out to see see some of the cloud cover there. it's cut off. there's not a lot of moisture with it, but it's enough to invite that marine layer to kind of stick around a bit and it will mix out for the afternoon, but it will be greeting us in the morning hours. temperature check were mostly in the mid 50's. 62 checking in for antioch at this hour. here's the breakdown for you. we do see a clearing up by 11 sunny inland, at least as we approach in about 70 or so, though, bay temperatures will be pretty much into the 60's. and a sneak peek into july. 4th of this is something we're still kind of working on. butk temperatures in the 50's lower 60's and kind of a damp coldness, partly cloudy skies and some coastal fog of we may

around 3.15, friday afternoon they got multiple calls about 2 women in a fight around castro and mercy street. that's near mountain view. city hall. police say a 2 said biglari is accused of assaulting an 18 year-old and making racial slurs at her. the glory is now in police custody in the santa clara county jail. in the south bay. let's get as police now investigating racist messages found in packages left on people's doorsteps. we have a photo of one of those packages. it contained rice and in antisemitic message. let's get as police saying these packages are similar. 2 others found in several communities across the country recently, police saying they believe these messages are tied to a fringe antisemitic group. state attorney general rob bonta says hate crimes rose rose more than 30% from 2020 to 2021. in san francisco is experiencing some of the worst of it. kron four's. rob

nesbitt reports on the response from local lawmakers. >> the biggest rise in hate crimes year to year targeted the asian american and pacific islander community. according to the a g s office is the worst things have been since the state started recording hate crime data 27 years ago that the numbers speak for themselves when it comes to violence towards the aap i community hate crimes against them. rose 177% in 2021. are sad angry. it's why assembly member matt haney joined community leaders friday in san francisco to call for legislative action to address the crisis, including a bill to help stop hate crimes on public transit. when ensure the transit agency staff are trained on how to legally respond to incidents of harassment, including hate crimes that take place on our streets and buses and mass transit. the data from the attorney general's office is troubling across the board, anti hispanic or latino hate crimes went up. 29%. black californians were targeted the most last year with 513 hate

crimes reported against them. we need to work together to fight this need to change the tights. and from now on, we can only move forward. assemblymember phil ting spoke friday about the importance of protecting minorities when they enter a business. he's working on a bill that would require large companies and retailers to train their employees on hate crimes have identified a hate crime. how to address the hate crime. how to it? sure that they know how to react if there is a hate incident at a retail institution. we all have the right to go to a grocery store, have the right to walk into a store to not feel. >> like we're being harassed, that hate crimes are up. police are responding to the crisis. the number of hate crime cases filed for prosecution in california are up 30% in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> police in nevada rest a bay area man accused of a stabbing in san jose. the suspect identified as kenneth rogers from alameda county, san jose. police say rodger stabbed a woman to death on may. 15th.

now investigators in san jose worked with police in las vegas to make this arrest. rodgers now being held in nevada. he will be sent to santa clara county to face murder charges. people are behind bars after a major narcotics bust in the east bay. we have photos here of the items seized. the alameda county comics task force seized over 40 pounds of fentanyl pills and powder on thursday. and nearly 50 grams of heroin and meth. a ghost gun was also found. police arrested all 8 people on drug trafficking charges. coming up on the kron 4 morning news a week after the supreme court overturns roe v wade. >> the action president biden is asking senate democrats to take. >> and if you're looking for something to do this weekend, there's the annual 10, the 10th annual, i should say, northern california, soy and tofu festival in san francisco. the event is back

president biden now saying he'd support a change to remove the senate filibuster rule. it would allow democrats to pass abortion legislation with a simple majority. but the possibility of that happening are various is very slim. biden saying americans need to make their voices heard in the fall. >> for the choice is clear either elect federal senators and representatives who will codify roe republicans who will elect the house and senate. we'll try to and abortions nationwide. nationwide. this is going to go one where the other after november. >> standing in opposition to this move are moderate democratic senators joe manchin of west virginia and krysten sinema of arizona both saying they will not support a change in the filibuster rules even if it is just for abortion rights. a new poll finds a growing percentage of americans calling out abortion or women's rights as

priorities for the government. this comes in the wake of the supreme court's decision to overturn roe v wade. according to the poll by the associated press, 22% of u.s. adults say abortion, women's rights are one of the key problems. they want the government to work on. now, the poll results also show 33% of democrats identify these rights as a priority issue for them. and among republicans, only 11 per cent. see abortion or women's rights as a priority issue. anti-abortion activists looking at a possible loophole that would allow women to have abortions regardless of the law in their own state, up to half of all us abortions are done through medications. the pills are fda approved for up to a 10th up to the 10th week of pregnancy since december. it's legal to get those pills through the mail. the postal service is not regulate where the shipments go in indiana. the state a g worries the pills could be trafficked into the state.

atlantic system with no exit into the pacific. now it too, will act parallel to central america and even mexico a bit become a hurricane later on and be deputized to a new name. by the way, not sure what that means is just yet. but it's heavy rains. it's carrying with the through central america right now is mount almost up to about a foot of rain. max winds at about 40 or so going to re intensify. back to what is a tropical storm to become a hurricane later on. we'll continue to watch that up north in the pacific. what we have is this pesky low out to see here continuing to provide that marine layer the morning fog. some of the coastal drizzle or even white drizzle going on. gradually. temperatures will climb to the remainder of the week. latter portion of the week and into next weekend. look at your 4 zone forecast for your saturday. 63 san francisco should see the sun come out by at least the afternoon. 58 pacific. a 61. meanwhile, for daly city, 66 burlingame to the south foster city. 69, along with palo alto mountain view. 68 72 for san jose

>> toxic down at korea state park exposure to humans can cause a rash, vomiting, diarrhea, cold and flu-like symptoms. the algae also poses vpa threat to pets. symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, difficulty breathing and seizures, or death. that's why san mateo county's director of environmental health services have ore, she is urging people to be mindful of the water and banks of the lagoon and creek. and want everyone to avoid. >> swimming in it and allowing their pets in the water or even touching outing. it's it's not safe. >> here's another video. but the blue green algae looks like for she says these conditions that have been popping up around the bay area are most likely caused by the drought sign of bacteria and tend to grow in the warm summer months when the water is warmer and the water flow is slower. and there isn't a lot slow.

federal safety officials say that every day about 280 people go to the er with injuries from fireworks and most of the people suffering injuries are teens. some of and as this map shows safe and sane, fireworks are allowed in just a handful of bay area cities, the safe and sane label means the fireworks do not explode or fly around, but they can still cause injuries. and again, are still usually illegal in most places in the bay area. so take a good look at the map on your screen there. if you are caught using fireworks where they are banned, there are hefty fines. some towns are going high tech to celebrate the 4th of july. these colorfully lit drones will fly and patriotic formations in some communities in california, colorado, new mexico, utah and texas. the ongoing drought in the southwest causing some towns to rethink or cancel. fireworks shows because of the

to kron. 4 morning news. good morning, everybody. first, a light of day. we're getting that fog covering up the towers. you can see from the golden gate. but still that on shore when firmly entrenched, we're going to see all day today. and of course, no surprise. >> places like half moon bay kind of overcast for night, for for for the overnight in this morning. that probably should clear out a little bit in the afternoon, but not a great bit. here's the slow. the remains kind of entrenched off of our coast here. not a lot of moisture with it, but enough to encourage the marine layer across the bay through the entire weekend suppressing temperatures but reviving moisture. check this out. we see check this out. we have fire concerns and so forth. we own this weekend. so in the

lying out on the sand. a gentle reminder from community groups to help keep our beloved beaches clean. joining me now to discuss is jennifer savage from the surfrider foundation. good morning to you. good morning. great to be here. so you never walk us through the scale of this problem. what happens around this time of year when you have so many people gathering on the beach? >> throughout all of the year, we see massive amount of plastic waste coming to our beaches and in our and i think most people are familiar with that problem. and then you add 4th of july into the mix and it's a time when people, of course, want to celebrate. we get longer you know, depending on where you live, you might have nicer weather. it's checking in the bay area as we just heard to predict that. but nonetheless, people love to get out to the beach and a lot of times people praying, disposable goods and those

plastic forks and cups and everything often in that getting left behind some pence, the wind blows and sometimes people are just not as attentive. and so the 5th of july is known as the dirtiest beach day of the yanks the dirtiest pace day of the year. right? >> so walk us through the short and the long-term impacts of this kind of pollution left behind by the dirtiest take of the year. >> sharon will be immediate impact is if you go to the beach the day after 4th of july, you'll probably be a rather horrified because most of go to the beach to feel good and to feel happy and to see the beauty and and kind of get away from the things that stress is out and so to arrive at the beach and sea. it literally trashed is a terrible feeling. the more at long-term and profound effects is that this waste. it breaks down into fragments and smaller fragment fragments, but it never goes away. and these microplastics in that,

you know, harming marine life all seen photos, unit, turtles and and whales and these different animal suffering from all the plastic in the ocean. but at this point, it's so pervasive is actually getting into a human blood. it's in our lungs. it's in the air that we create. it's really just stunning. and so reducing plastic trash is a critical issue of our times right now. >> yeah, you know, i have a friend who actually enjoy surfing and he tells me basically after every major holiday or even after a big rainfall when he goes out into the water, it's literally he's just swimming. and if he's surrounded by plastic. so this really is a very visible and serious issue that people should be considering when they go out this 4th of july. so another question i have for you is does the type of sunscreen we use play a role in environmental pollution? >> it definitely can. at surfrider. we have a full guide on wreath. what we call

friendly sunscreen. now there's not as many reeves and up and down california. it's a hawaii and florida. but if something is labeled 3 friendly, then you know that it is made when more natural ingredients, ingredients that are less likely to create any harm. and so i definitely would encourage people to look out for that because that are not only for the ocean, but also for people and it. >> and helping our oceans is a year-round affair. so what sort of things should we all keep in mind? what can we do to help? >> let's face remember that even though as i just mentioned to plastic pollution is really pervasive. and it's this huge problem that where we're facing an a i'm kind of challenging time in a lot of ways for the environment. it is nonetheless something that we can do something about. and so at surf rider, we focus a lot on stopping plastic at the source. so people in san francisco, for example, be familiar with efforts to eliminate plastic bags from

single use plastic bags from common use in these different ways that we can do things as a sort of policy approach. but we also we have chapters and we have a great chapter san francisco. we have been down dan mchale and marin and they do beach cleanups taken at does go out to the beach and help and leave it cleaner than you found it in our own lives. we continues to use reuse abel's. so instead of buying a bunch of plastic that you're going to once and throw away like why not pick up, you know, take at your reusable for ken year. reusable coffee mug and your reusable water bottle and use those to to make air weekend celebration. even more fun. >> jennifer savage from the surfrider foundation. thank you so much for his very important tips and for your time this morning. thank you so much. all right. we'll be right back.

>> good morning. welcome back to the kron. 4 morning news. really chilly start to the morning. let's start off this half hour with a look at our forecast. we have dave sphar in the weather center with the very latest heyday. a good morning, stephanie. good morning. everybody looks like summer's take a little bit of a breather right here on the july 4th holiday. >> a weekend east bay shoreline covered up with all of that fog. still at this late hour and even cloud cover in the south bay. the shot from quite tower. you can see couple little rain drops kind of in the foreground of what's going on here and that you can expect tomorrow morning and

even into july 4th morning as well into monday. but we have a whole lot of trough out to sea. that's an encouraging an onshore flow which brings up marine layer in our general direction. sun comes up and mixes out a little bit. but as far as anything real earnest and rain, it doesn't look like we'll get anything from it. but just enough to keep that marine layer and place it acts as a nice fire retardant. there got the mid-fifties over most of the region. in fact, 63 antioch, it's the kind of the odd ball number out there haven't seen much action with the sun warming things yet. but the breakdown is 65. by high noon. most of those inland valleys will of cleared out by that point by 03:00pm. a lot of 70 gives you a sign of some things to come. temperatures are going to be you to the next couple of days and for the fireworks. unfortunate. the fog is not a big help in this, although it's starting to wane by this in may still be an issue a little bit monday night. we're still monitoring it, but 50's and lower 60's with partly cloudy skies and some coastal fog out. it will have your 4 zone forecast in the extended

accused of assaulting an 18 year-old and making racial slurs at her is now in police custody in the santa clara county jail. state attorney general rob bonta says hate crimes rose more than 30% from 2020 to 2021. in san francisco is experiencing some of the worst of it. kron four's rob nesbitt reports on the response from local lawmakers. >> the biggest rise in hate crimes year to year targeted the asian american and pacific islander community. according to the a g s office. it's the worst things have been since the state started recording hate crime data 27 years ago that the numbers speak for themselves when it comes to violence towards the ap. i community hate crimes against them. rose 177% in 2021. are sad angry. it's why assembly member matt haney joined community leaders friday in san francisco to call for legislative action to address the crisis, including a bill to help stop hate crimes on public transit when ensure the

transit agency staff are trained on how to legally respond to incidents of harassment, including hate crimes that take place on our streets and buses and mass transit. the data from the attorney general's office is troubling across the board, anti hispanic or latino hate crimes went up. 29%. black californians were targeted the most last year with 513 hate crimes reported against them. we need to work together to fight this need to change the tides. and from now on, we can only move forward. assemblymember phil ting spoke friday about the importance of protecting minorities when they enter a business. he's working on a bill that would require large companies and retailers to train their employees on hate crimes have identified a hate crime, had a address, the hate crime. how to it? sure that they know how to react if there is a hate incident at 8 retail institution, we all have the right to go to a grocery store, have the right to walk into a store to not feel. >> like we're being harassed, the hate crimes are up. police are responding to the crisis. the number of hate crime cases

>> welcome back. a big part of the 4th of july celebrations are the food. a lot of people we barbecuing this weekend, which means a lot of hamburgers and hot dogs. but what about dessert? well, fortunately we have you covered this morning. joining us now is livermore chef leslie dabney, also known as the vineyard mom and leslie of a lot of great 4th of july theme deserts. you're going to show us this morning. >> yes, i do. and it's festive time. so these are definitely festive desserts. i have my she, kate, that i'm going to decorate to look like the american flag decadent cream cheese frosting. and also have some park base for those people who don't want to have some so festive and so fun. i can see. i'm loving the red, white and blue theme,

especially with the perfect. it's it's so there's delicious and i promise you, stephanie, all these recipes are easy to make. so start off with my cake. now i'm using just a sheet cake and it's a white cake that, stephanie, if you like chocolate or read it, choose whatever kind of cake you want now. i mean, my from scratch. but honestly, if you want to use cake mix from the store, there's no shame in your game. do whatever is easiest for ok? now? i just away case like this. and i made my early this morning, stephanie. so cake, you decide to make whatever flavor, make sure you do it early enough. so we completely pools because you don't want to put this delicious frosting on the cake and how that turned into a mask. so sure do it ahead of time. whatever flavor you decide to okay. now i'm covering my with a very decadent cream cheese

frosting, which i absolutely love to. do. you cheese frosting 70? you know, that sounds very it's like a guilty indulgence for me. >> it >> really is. and it's the 4th of july. so why not? yes, so i actually craft mice my stand mixer and to make this delicious frosting, i just added some salted butter. i'm using my organic valley. ph is just because that's my favorite and use whatever choose. you like just maybe don't use a flavor one or one. that's that's half the packages has a different consistent statement so that those 2 together in my stand mixer and i them together and then i slowly ax track and also my powdered sugar. and stephanie, i can't emphasize enough about slowly happening the powdered less. don't look at the kitchen go slowly on this, ok, good pro. and you're going to mix it just for a minute or 2, just so it's well

combined and incorporated and nice and smooth. so i already have my and dot. so i frost now this is the white part for the strikes that the red, white and blue. so you want to make sure you to back you want to make sure you get this all over the cake so that you can see the white stripes. so this is going to be my weight strikes. and i'm going read this on okay. and now for the and for the rat the use of fresh fruit. so it's not such a guilty pleasure if you have free to like that's what i say so it makes all the difference. i suppose was. all look happening. and i say fresh fruit is a definite that so i have my strawberries, blackberries, some blueberries and raspberries. and honestly, you can use without ever read and live fruit that you like to make that make the case. now for me, if you've got little hands in the kitchen that want to help, let them help you decorate to skate

because honestly, you can't go wrong with that. kids love to be creative. so i'm going to have my friends and family and the kids how we decorate this, kate, i actually this morning that's already decorated that i share with you and look at how pretty this is. wow. gorgeous. it's a flat sheet cake that would be easy to may and the kids love it, but make sure you refrigerate it so that the cream cheese a slice of fresh on that. yeah. and then keys you don't want k i have another option for you. lou, is the part phase. and i love the spark days. they're absolutely delicious. so i just picked up some myself made but crane and the stigmas, my red, white and blue theme, i just decided to get more of the free and do it in layers. so i did my red, white and and this way. anybody who doesn't want maybe you know, flu free. and this is a perfect alternative for them. so this may have options

peeled for toxic algae in the water. kron four's gayle ong explains the possible danger to your health. >> harmful algae visible along the pakistan gregorio state beach on friday posted signs warned beachgoers against going into the creek. he should be concerned in this particular case there was a positive for >> toxic down at korea state park exposure to humans can cause a rash, vomiting, diarrhea, cold and flu-like symptoms. the algae also poses a threat to pets. symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, difficulty breathing and seizures, or death. that's why san mateo county's director of environmental health services have therefore, she is urging people to be mindful of the water and banks of the lagoon and creek through want everyone to avoid. >> swimming in it and allowing their pets in the water or even touching outing. it's it's not safe. >> here's another video. but

the blue green algae looks like for she says these conditions that have been popping up around the bay area are most likely caused by the drought sign of bacteria and tend to grow in the warm summer months when the water is warmer and the water flow is slower. and there isn't a lot slow. >> and that the water has been sitting there. it's been stagnant for quite a while. and so the algae is growing. pretty thick laid down in that area. and we want everyone to avoid swimming in it. >> and the next water sampling event for this particular beach will take place sometime in mid august, reporting from san mateo county, gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> some doctors are warning people about fireworks labeled safe and sane. they say even those small sparklers can leave third-degree burns, federal safety officials say that every day about 280 people go to the er with injuries from fireworks and

>> welcome back. time now for another check of the weather with meteorologist dave sphar. did you know getting up this morning? i notice that it was a little chilly outside a little drizzly to in the and little windshield wiper action cross. the bridge is still have to do a bit. >> that fog should mix out for us. good morning, everybody. as we get to around the noon hour or so, the golden gate still fighting that fog cover. you can see this morning. meanwhile, even in the south bay got these scattered clouds at work here from san jose state. this is still only 9 o'clock. so late in the morning. still to be contending with this again, this is expected to clear out by the time we reach around the noon hour, therefore, temperatures have been very sluggish. what's driving all of this is a trough out to sea. it's inviting in that marine layer, not a lot of moisture associated with it, although it's coming from the right direction of the northwest. that does tend generate a little in the way of some rain forest on the winter months. want to jump to that moisture level forecast for you. real quick this afternoon. look at the numbers. only get into the

40's and then to back down tonight will share comes that marine layer. this is fire retardant. so that's good news on that front. at least by tomorrow morning. way it comes out by the afternoon, only drop into the 40's when we have a fire concern. we see these numbers fall. the 20's and even teens. and that's coupled with the fact the temperatures are a lot higher, too. got 64. meanwhile for antioch at this hour, mid to upper 50's cover most of the bay for right now. we haven't had a lot of mercury movement % with all of this because of the cloud cover marine layer and place handing it over to future cast for again, see improving skies by the afternoon then late tonight, tomorrow here comes back again, fills up the bay with the cloud cover in the fog. you've got the drill that will be monday morning as well. and unfortunately, monday night might see that try to interfere a little bit with fireworks. 63 san francisco fog drizzle late clearing 66 for oakland. 72 for san jose. again, that morning. cloud cover just showed you highs today. middle 70's for those inland valleys is kind of a

mercy streets. that's near mountain view. city hall police say a tusa biglari is accused of assaulting an 18 year-old and making racial slurs at her biglari is now in police custody at the santa clara county jail. in state attorney general rob bonta says hate crimes rose more than 30% from 2020 to 2021. and san francisco is experiencing the worst of it. kron four's rob nesbitt reports on the response from local lawmakers. >> the biggest rise in hate crimes year to year targeted the asian american and pacific islander community. according to the a g s office is the worst things have been since the state started recording hate crime data 27 years ago that the numbers speak for themselves when it comes to violence towards the aap i community hate crimes against them. rose 177% in 2021. are sad angry. it's why assembly member matt haney joined community leaders friday in san francisco to call for legislative action to address the crisis, including a bill

to help stop hate crimes on public transit. when ensure the transit agency staff are trained on how to legally respond to incidents of harassment, including hate crimes that take place on our streets and buses and mass transit. the data from the attorney general's office is troubling across the board, anti hispanic or latino hate crimes. with up 29%. black californians were targeted the most last year with 513 hate crimes reported against them. we need to work together to fight this need to change the tides. and from now on, we can only move forward. assemblymember phil ting spoke friday about the importance of protecting minorities when they enter a business. he's working on a bill that would require large companies and retailers to train their employees on hate crimes have identified a hate crime. how to address the hate crime. how to it? sure that they know how to react if there is a hate incident at a retail institution. we all have the right to go to a grocery store, have the right to walk into a store to not feel.

be great for people that can be frightening for pets. in fact, more dogs and cats go missing on july 4th than any other day in the year. well, here to help you prepare your pet for the long holiday is. but the tarbox communications manager with the peninsula, humane society. thank you so much for being here with us today. you're very welcome. thank you for having us. and you also brought a friend. i did. this is body high. he's one of our pet assisted therapy dogs. and and he's also one of those animals that gets really terrified by yes. so one of the things that we always really recommends that people do is. >> when your animals inside, keep your animals inside. so that way. and, you know, close the windows, turn on some live music so that we can help drown out some of the sounds and help ease their anxieties. what are some of what are some of the reasons why pets can get so scared by the sound and potentially sites of fireworks. yes, so, you know, we tend to see 4th of july's

very celebratory, very animal stone. and this includes wild animals as well. they're just hearing really loud sounds that they're not familiar with. they're seen sites that they're not familiar with, including like perhaps even loud music from 4th of july parties. and that can be really, really scary to them. unfortunately, a lot of dogs and cats as well and up as strays 4th of july activities at various shelters. so if you ever become separated from your animal, not just rain. the 4th of july activities. please check with all your local shelters to see if your animal has ended up there and make sure that your animal has some form of identification. best of all, a microchip. and so it sounds like then that the humane society, the peninsula, humane society, does see an uptick in the number of animal showing up. >> at your facility shortly after the 4th of july. yeah, tends to be one of our busiest times of the year. so we're really prepared for it. you know, again, if people become separated from the animals, please check with your local

shelter to see if your animals there. now, if what sort of what signs of distress should we be looking out for in our animals when those fireworks start going off, any sort hiding definitely, you know, they're hiding there. shivering, you know, shaking, you know, those sorts of things says as well anything that you would normally associate with seen stress and one thing that does can help with certain animals is something like a thunder shirt. and basically it's like this little. >> comfort like a little hug, you know? and it comes in a variety of different sizes, even sizes for like big dogs like buddy that you can put on your animal. that helps ease anxiety a little bit. you can find these online at various pet stores. we can sell them through our own well, so that's good to know because, you know, my brother has a husky and he's a big dog. but it is so interesting because once those fireworks top start popping off, he. >> he runs and hides behind house. so so the thunder vest

might the i can help in calming sprays. you know, things like that. and that's why you talk about, you know, dogs getting scared and running. if a dog managed to get outside, it can actually jump a can dig underneath the fence and you can run and it can flee from its home. and unfortunately even end up out in traffic where there could be tragic consequences. we certainly want to avoid that. absolutely. they do that. why are certain animals or rather of cats or dogs? >> more susceptible or sensitive to these loud noises, then say others, because while my brother's huskies very our shell team early and he's like, oh, no big. yeah, i think it's just dependent upon the personality. i mean, my cat is really terrified by any sound, including like just the garbage truck coming through the neighborhood. >> you know, but i've had cats in the past that seem to enjoy watching the fireworks. so you just never know. it just depends on the personality of your animal. so make sure you know your animal and again, make sure that your animal has some sort of id in case you do

become separated and buddies also have a lot of said >> and on. >> you know, other other summer safety tips that people should be when it comes to making sure that their pets are healthy and well taken care of during this very hot season. absolutely. >> do not take your dog or your pet to you with you, any place that you might be going in your vehicle, even if you're just running into the pharmycy or the grocery store for what you think is a couple minutes that car can heat up very quickly, even with cracked windows. so just please leave your animals at home. unfortunately, we've seen a major spike in animals being left in hot cars, especially during the hot over the last couple place us leave your animal at home. your animals going to be healthier and happier. just being at home. and when it comes to taking our pets out for walks, are there certain things that we should be looking out for should be getting those little booties for our dogs to put on their feet. if it's >> getting a little bit hot out. yeah, you can definitely do that because the pads of a

dog's feet can burn on the hot sidewalk or asphalt. so, but we also recommend that taking dogs out for walks when it's cooler. >> like earlier morning or little bit later in the evening when the sun is not as bright hot. >> one other thing i want to talk touch on the adoption process at the peninsula, humane society on during the pandemic. we saw so many people going out adopting animals. now, here we are a few years into this and we're seeing the shelter start to fill up again. is there a message that you would like to get out there in terms of just how many animals you have in the shelter now and the hope that you have for them to get to get them into their forever. homes. yes, so i mean, typically when we're adopting any sort of animal, we do our due diligence and talking with potential doctors to make sure that they understand the needs of that animal to make sure that they can accommodate animal like, you know, a dog the but he's probably not going to be happy in a studio you know, so

really starting you know, do a lot of investigation with the people who are interested in adopting. we currently have were full, you know, like many shelters throughout the bay area. we have lots of cats with lots of kittens. we seem to have a lot of rabbits we have over 60 rabbits that are seeking homes right now. and we also have a lot of dogs as well. so but that's not uncommon because it is baby. see some yet many shelters here getting a lot of kittens, a lot of puppies and a lot of younger animals as well. so if anyone's interested seen the animals that we have available for adoption, they can go to our website at phs stash spca dot org. we're located in burlingame, very easy to get to and anyone can adopt from us. you don't have to be a resident of our county or you can visit your other local shelters to see animals that are available for adoption. wonderful. and last quick question here for you. since we do have buddy, here he is a therapy dog. so on other, is there a specific program that people can you know, sign up for or learn more about the

therapy services that you do offer through the peninsula. humane society. yes. so we have a pet assisted therapy program and we have approximately 80 animals that are active enrolled in our program and they all sorts of places to provide the healing presence of an animal. that includes high libraries, hospice centers, but he goes to a lot of hospice centers, assisted living facilities, drug rehabilitation centers and even prisons and jails. so if anyone is animals have to be very calm. like buddy, you know, and they have to be comfortable in all different types of settings. and so you can always go again to our website to learn more about our program. we don't just have dogs. we actually have a large flemish rabbit. we and we also have a cat to have a california toward but they've since moved out of the area. so it's not just though. dogs comprise the majority of our pena says that there program.

a minor warming trend to take us to tuesday. quite a bit of cloud cover tomorrow. then should clear out for monday tuesday and again, up to 72. by that point, winds are pretty much on shores. they will be all this weekend and through monday act as a nice climate control coupled with that marine layer and some of that fog that's at work in the morning hours, particularly very little mercury movement. all this morning, we're talking about 50's covering the bay mid-fifties pretty much 64 antioch. they're the ones that stand out there and 53 chilly degrees. half moon bay with overcast in place. we do have a couple tropical systems make note of its tropical storm colin right off the coast or south carolina. you can see the squall line. we're all the heavier weather is out to sea. they did get some heavier rains yesterday out that way. this expected to hit hatteras and move on. that's way out east when it reaches north of cape hatteras, the the gulf stream actually goes out to sea and it's not so much warm up to the north. so has colder waters. meanwhile, down to central america, this another

one we're watching. it's going into the pacific body coming from the atlantic. so be given a new pacific name. it's expected to become a hurricane. it looks like later on again, parallel to the coast staying away from the mexican coast. that will be on the west side. so watching things along the pacific going forward. we do still have those juicy low that continues around our coast. delivering us this moisture here. but conditions will not a clear out. it looks like and temperatures will be a bit on the cool side. it would be sharing the skies with some cloud cover. 63, we have a 61 1 on for daly city along the bay side, mid 60's at that 69 foster city and also for palo alto in the south bay. we've got 72 san jose east bay shoreline, mid 60's. 71 for livermore and walnut creek. 72 73 for concord. 63 for berkeley. 62 of allay with a nap at 74. 80% of rosa, although we'll see the sun each day really better clearing out happening by tuesday. it's still going to be slow warming up here stay in the 80's. just about all week long. funny popping 90 by

friday, stephanie. thanks very much. dave. >> as we get closer to the 4th of july fire agencies across santa clara county have safety reminders. they want you to know when it comes to fireworks. joining me live now is captain justin stockman with the santa clara county fire department in palo alto. good morning to you. >> good morning. thank you for having me. we really appreciate it. >> now, captain, we're still in a drought in california. we know fireworks are going to be in play for july 4th. how concerned are you about a potential wildfire happening this weekend? >> i would say very concerned at that point. you know it it. we are several years into continued unprecedented wildfire behavior and absolutely unprecedented as you can see behind me, the grass in the hills there, they're dry even on a day like today. we stay concerned. you know, i'm i'm up here in the hills above los altos hills and palo alto and even with the cooler weather this,

legislation is still capable of burning very quick. >> now, as we can see, as you just mentioned, your live out there, a lot of dry high concern for potential wildfire sparking. do you have extra resources on standby in anticipation of potential wildfires? >> we do over the past several years, santa clara county fire department and many of the other santa clara county fire agencies have really worked a lot not just our stopping but the resources we have available. you can see behind me is one of our type 3 fire engines that additional stopping today. and we're continuing to evaluate the need for additional on a day-to-day of not hour to hour basis as we move towards the holiday. >> and this year, your team launched a new campaign specifically addressing fireworks safety. and then you walk us through that and the safety message that you want people to know. >> yeah, you know, at the end of the day, what what we're really asking people to do. and and, you know, i got to say, i really i have a lot of

faith in and a lot of trust in our community to get right thing. and so we really are asking and some boys were leading is please leave fireworks to the professionals at they are. they're in an area like ours where we have so much natural beauty and so much open space. it is truly not worth the risk of sparking a wildfire. and we've seen year after year after year for the last decade, the destructive nature of wildfires, whether whether it's to human lives to property or to the environment that we rely on and it's not worth it. and take it a step further. you know, i thank you for doing that previous segment about animals and fireworks as we need to think about each other. our neighbors are our neighbors, pats and and finally i'd say is is think about ourselves, right? i mean, we're we're creeping up on 20,000. significant fireworks injuries a year in this many are disfiguring and life changing. get it truly is. it's not worth it. so what what we've

done this year is we we try to give people and all 10 santa clara county fire agencies have put out a flyer that you can find on any of our social media. the details when and where the professional fireworks shows are are happening. we we ask that people either go to those or watch coverage like yours gets the the best of all. the bay area in one place in the upper tier living and avoid a fire hazard and help out there that an environmental hazard, a fire pit. >> and captain it, what's the best way for someone to report illegal fireworks if they see that happening in their neighborhood? yeah. so. >> i want to i want to be real specific. what what we want people to do is we want people to be to call 9-1-1. were called there. police agencies, 10 digit, a direct line to their dispatch center. if they 9-1-1, it's fine. but the caviar is we really want to make sure that people are observing where the fireworks are coming from. we get a lot of that people are hearing explosions in the area and the

way that sound travels and the the difficulty in tracking that down a lot of times that actually distract us and makes us makes it more difficult for us to do. proactive enforcement and be out in the community finding where the fireworks to watch from. so if you're going to, if you're going to call 9-1-1, if you're going to call your local police agency, make sure you have specific actionable information for them. not just that you heard something or you think it's coming from the direction we need a specific all right, captain justin stocking with the santa clara county fire department. >> thank you so much for your time. your insight and for your service to the community.
