>> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 7. >> hey, good morning. thanks so much for joining us on the kron. 4 morning news. i'm stephanie lin. >> it's sunday, july 3rd, we have a lot to get to for you this morning. let's start by getting a look at the weather with dave spahr. good morning, dave. good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. and we're off to the similar kind of start we had from yesterday, but coupled with this, not just at the ground level, we're seeing this fog marine layer program and so forth. but above us, we're also seeing some cloud cover that will be part pretty much hallmarks for the morning hours until that to mixes out a little bit in the afternoon. golden gate bridge is all covered up. at least the major

2 towers. >> you see the flag flapping with that on shore wind to get used to it. it's with us for just about all week long here. here's a quick shot at san jose state to show you this kind of deck of cloud cover. we have this kind of yesterday, but also having it today as well. again, this should clear out in the afternoon mid to upper 50's is the story. 53 going on for half moon bay, antioch at 59 and again upper 50's along the east bay shore line. you're going to be seeing similar numbers today like we saw yesterday. back to that fog and actually mixes out fairly quickly. but the cloud cover will be a bit more sluggish on that front, particularly around the immediate bay. here comes the fog back again tonight and overnight to start the 4th of july monday. so a look at what it looks like on satellite. there you see it with the lion share of any echoes of rain as far up towards the north. but again, we're expecting clearing into the afternoon on shore winds already in place in the teens, even some 20's. they will be active again for today. keeping a nice cooling effect. almost like a fall like feel.

so let's keep a lot of cloud cover in the morning hours even inland. 62 at 11:00am by 2. breaking it up. 68 high temperatures struggle through the lower 70's. kind of look at that forecast coming up in a bit. stephanie, thanks very much. dave. >> breaking news we're following from overnight. firefighters in contra costa county responded to several fires. many of them likely started by fireworks. we have video from one of those flames along james don, like avenue in antioch. witnesses say this happened near summer's ville road. this fire burned about 2 and a half acres. firefighters saying this was one of many fires they had to put out last night. >> and a half acre best buy over here. that all came in at the same and all of our cities >> and this time it was by work that they need that was going on. but with the winds like that. the spread of

fireworks is gone. >> a lot harder. >> yes, sir. certainly a fire crews have their hands full with this. at the same time, this fire sparked 2 more fire started in other parts of the bay area. one happening at a building in pittsburgh and another burning more than a dozen abandoned semi truck trailers and an antioch field. the cause of these fires is under investigation. but elsewhere in contra costa county, we've confirmed firefighters responded to fire caused by fireworks last night. the first happening in antioch. here's a photo tweeted out by the fire department showing crews at the scene. this is on carp and terry, a drive. and we also have a photo tweeted out by the fire department showing the aftermath of a fire in the parking lot of highlands elementary school. you can see the remains of the fireworks that started this blaze. and once again, firefighters are warning people about the dangers of fireworks. >> we need to be responsible and safe with the the winds

that are going right now, anything that goes off lows into the grass. which has us that company's best players nonstop. >> the fires are all under control. now. fortunately, no reports of any injuries. in the east bay. the city of oakland is expecting large 4th of july crowds at lake merritt today and tomorrow the city put in place temporary safety measures at grizzly peak. that's a popular place for people to watch. fireworks. there will also be road closures around lake merritt along lakeshore avenue and grand avenue and in berkeley, panoramic drive will be closed to non-residents are other people who do not live there from 5 to 11 at night. two-year pandemic pause in alameda is 4th of july parade is ending kron four's polluted. all shows us how people there are getting ready for one of the bay area's biggest celebrations. >> billed as the longest 4th of july parade route in the

nation at 3.3 miles, the city of alameda is bracing for some 16,000 people to head into town monday morning. the island's first foray them independence day since 2019. >> at that time, no one had a clue. the event would go on hiatus during the pandemic. residents and business owners are welcoming the floats and marching bands back with open arms. so first time we went was 3 years ago. >> and they were very little so this year, i feel like to really be able to enjoy the alameda recreation and parks department has barricades set up along the parade route. american flags also lined the city streets. mayor marilyn ezzy ashcraft believes people will start heading into town. early. people will be sitting in the chairs that they put up the night before on the curves and they're dressed in their red, white and blue. the dogs >> are decorated red, white and blue. >> and you just see everybody out. people love a parade and they're usually willing to spend money when attending one and business owners are

game for his local minor league baseball team. hope winner has this story. >> i just hold barr. my arm was in good shape 100 year-old roy canyon is practicing his pitch. his dream of playing professional baseball will finally come true on the 4th of july. this is going to be your chance to play for the bisons for he grew up listening to yankee games featuring his favorite player luke eric. he idolized his older brother, ralph, on the field. roy went on to play at parker high school where he became an all-star. in the summer of 1942, the u.s. entered world war 2 and roy made the decision to enlist in the navy and season. >> i was i knew i was ready to get drafted. >> as jews and ices. iris entered the home boy. those zoom. i said putin. as know.

4 morning news. i'm stephanie lin. time now for another check of the weather with meteorologist dave spahr. a look a little bit overcast out there. day overcast. that's right for everybody. that's going to the morning of story for everybody. looks like morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. >> same program as yesterday with this fog covering up the 2 towers. you can see the golden gate. we're seeing that all the way across the bay coupled with aloft got that cloud cover. we're seeing that at san jose state. quite a bit of overcast skies. the stuff you just referred to and this again will be hallmarks of our morning hours with some afternoon clearing. so here's how it looks like in total. yes, it will break up and pass through, but this is kind of the morning part of the story with all these radar echoes to the north. and then the skies will open up. but don't expect a lot of movement with temperatures going on with the strong on shore flow, keeping those temperatures reduce your storm tracker 4 kind of a closer view. got the upper 50's on the east bay shoreline inland. they don't move much more. 59 antioch, 57 santa rosa. 53 for half moon bay and san jose checks in at 58

handing it over to future cast for to watch it. there you see the cloud cover. start to break up as we get to the afternoon hours. what a daylight. so we'll be able to enjoy this into the evening hours. but just in time for tomorrow morning, here comes another deck here. we have kind of this program all week long of everything west to east. that's going to keep temperatures fairly consistent and you can expect near water that chance of some drizzle going on trick in the morning hours. even little bit on the bay side. a touch too inland. it's going to be more cloud cover. you're going to see that will break up for the afternoon. but that's more or less. what you can expect for the whole week. and that's going to be a nice temperature control for us as well. here. the on shore winds. another factor you're going to feel just like yesterday here in the afternoon. we'll do the same thing again for your july 4th as well. but at least it's nice fire retardant while we're at it. so putting it all together here for you. this the east bay shoreline view and the fog is coming right up to the shrubbery here morning clouds, fog coastal drizzle

afternoon clearing 60 70's game plan. nobody probably should hit 80 today, july 4th, sun and clouds mixture, warm, mild depending on your perspective there. upper 70's near about 80 in some spots may be inland. there. but for the week ahead, it's bay clouds, 70's. we go and then mostly sunny inland with 80's near 90. that should happen towards the end of the week. maybe by thursday. we'll do that and into friday will pop in about 90 so afternoon skies opening up. 63 san francisco, 66 oakland, 71. meanwhile, 4 san jose in a bit. we'll have your 4 zone forecast. stefanie, thanks very much. dave. >> many people are traveling for the 4th of july holiday weekend on friday, nearly 2 and a half million people traveled through airports nationwide. kron four's amanda hari reports from sfo with reaction from travelers. >> it appears to be much less busy here at the airport. then it was in previous days. i spoke to some people that say they purposely chose to fly on saturday versus friday because they thought it might be less

busy. >> i was kind of like think you'll be ok, this is since it's the second and it's the night and people who travel probably to the morning or >> after days of travel woes, many flights reportedly canceled, more delayed and millions of travelers moving through tsa checkpoints. saturday seem to be a little. it was actually not as busy as i expected. i thought that there will be a lot of people are thought kind of hectic and chaotic, but not really human. she is flying to denver. >> she says she chose to fly saturday instead of friday because she thought it would be less crowded. it seems pretty nice because i was like looking at the security. >> and this seems like not a lot of people are there. so seems pretty good. she says she feels comfortable traveling despite the fact that covid-19 is still an issue. >> but she wishes there was more consistency when it came to people masking up right now. i feel like people taking it more for granted and it's

chief under fire for his handling of the uvalde school shooting resigned from his city council position this weekend. chief pedro arredondo was sworn in to the council position in may just a week after the mass shooting at robb elementary school. 21 people died, including 19 children. the director of the texas department of public safety called the police response that day. a failure placing blame on the chief chief arradondo has been on administrative leave from this school district position since june 22nd. governor gavin newsom is offering tax breaks for companies and antiabortion states to come to california. the governor posting this tweet saying he's offering tax incentives, encouraging businesses to move out of what he calls anti-choice, repressive states like texas to the real freedom state of california where we will not find new hundreds of thousands of dollars for allowing employees to receive health

>> good morning. welcome back to the kron. 4 morning news. let's start off this half hour with a look at our forecast. we have dave spahr in the weather center with the latest. what we can expect this long holiday weekend, a day. hey, good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. cool will be the word going on here. you a little break from summer going on. this is downtown san francisco. look at all the fog that's in place coupled with upstairs got some of that cloud cover working its magic as well. we can see that san jose state. so the same performance yesterday, but just like yesterday will take a while to really start to break up and get some sunshine going on in here. here's what it looks like. a loft, though. you can see this collection of cloud cover will be the morning part of our story coupled with onshore winds. temperature check for you. got the mid to upper 50's. 59 antioch. 57 covering san santa

rosa and again upper 50's on the east bay shoreline got cloudy skies in the early part of the day. opening up for the afternoon, although along the coast and maybe a little slower clearing out 68, even as late as 2 o'clock jumping ahead to the fireworks action for july 4th around the bay. temperatures will be in the upper 50's lower 60's, partly cloudy skies and that coastal fog does come back again. we're going to look at your 4 zone forecast in the extended coming up in a bit. stephanie, thanks very much. dave. >> the city of concord showcasing its annual live fireworks display this 4th of july as kron four's gayle ong report. thousands of people are expected at mount diablo high school to watch the big show. >> it is quiet now here at mount diablo high school. but that is going to change on monday, july 4th. >> fireworks will be lighting up the night sky and concord were really excited. this is our welcome back celebration for concord city council member to medallion looking

forward to bringing back the annual fireworks show to mount diablo high school for the first time since the pandemic events were canceled in 2020 in 2021, the fireworks show was held at the concord pavilion, but the show pods after 2 small grass fire sparked this year. the fireworks will launch from the high school's football field. we are going to have live music. we're going to have a dj out we are going to have some food trucks as well. >> it will be independence day festivities leading up to the big show. starting at 08:00am with the stars and stripes. kids, fun run and 5 k run followed by a parade at todos santos plaza. later in the evening. spectators can gather here on the line and mount diablo high school. >> to watch the fireworks. >> idea is just to be a low key. find evening for everyone to come out. bring your bike. it's bring your chairs. and we just a great time.

>> the fireworks show begins at 09:00pm on monday. the event is free to watch gates open at 06:00pm reporting from concord, gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> and this year, the san francisco police department is telling people not to go to treasure island to watch this year's fireworks show. they say construction projects will block access to any parking areas. the fireworks show is set to start over the san francisco waterfront 9.30, monday night. they bay area fire and police departments are urging people to please not call 9-1-1. if they hear fireworks calls for fireworks on the 4th of july can overwhelm emergency systems because sadly, a lot of people seem to set those off now, instead, those in san jose and san francisco are asked to please call 3, 1, 1, this will help keep emergency lines open for active fires or life-threatening situations. and as this map shows safe and sane, fireworks are allowed in

announced they're leaving pac 12. what we're learning about the conference shakeup. >> i've got both sides represented here and one good thing about what's going on is that both of these teams are leaving together. so nothing changes when it comes to the crosstown rivalry. but both of them apart of the pac, 12 for so many years. and this is going to take some getting used to. >> you know, i think it's kind of the end of tradition and in college football. >> i guess you don't care that you know, all the tradition of the pac 12 and all >> i grew up in the midwest. so i'm i'm partial to the big time, but i can understand you're coming from. to me. it's weird to hear the big 10 made it up to the coast usc and uc lay will exit the pac 12 for the big 10 in august of 2024, that means the bruins and trojans will play football games against teams like michigan and ohio state instead of oregon state and arizona. the move will affect all sports except for some volleyball and water. polo teams. and it means much more exposure for student athletes.

the big 10 has a tv deal that could be worth a billion dollars. it distributes twice as much money to its members compared to the pac. 12 that tv revenue, especially from football and basketball, supports other sports and even academics at these universities. switching to the big 10 will help with recruiting big-time student athletes are essentially getting paid now. they can sell their names, images and likenesses and playing in the big 10 is worth more because it has a national footprint. those are the positives, but there are some downsides. fans are going to have to travel to the east coast more often to see the bruins and the trojans play away games. get used to having to go to ann arbor in frozen december weather to see the teams play michigan and it will also be a challenge for student athletes too. you think it's harder for the student athletes to have to travel? >> i mean, it is a very rigorous schools, athlete or not. so and professor understanding, but at the same time, so to get the word that so i'm sure that that's going
