war 2, my grandfather's village, most of the people were killed. and so i kept on thinking if he hadn't come to the states and made a life, if our family was still there and there may still have been family members left. i just would have wanted someone to help me if i was in the same situation. >> and did you have a chance to engage in any conversations with the refugees who are coming to seek help and walk us through some of their stories. >> i thought it was it was just amazing. i had breakfast with one woman who was being put up at our hotel and she said she was from a zachary asia and she said, i understand from our neighbors that russian soldiers are living in my house eating off my plates and another woman who fled from odessa. she had 15 minutes to pack. her entire life and leave and she left her instrument, a bond, dora, which is native to ukraine behind. and she told me crying
9:19 am
about it. and another young woman fled because she needed insulin for her diabetes. she came out with her mother. so all sorts of stories like >> and what is the message too viewers here in the bay area? how can people help? because it's so easy to get caught up in, you know, things that are happening in our everyday lives in all the different news coming on the headlines. but this conflict is still happening overseas ferry very much so. it was hard for me to find a place i could volunteer because i'm i'm just a normal person. i don't have medical training. i don't have trauma training. and i just had a set of hands and a desire to go over. so there are opportunities for just regular folks who don't speak the language. >> the multicultural center in krakow has actually started cutting back on their hours at the distribution points because they're not getting enough volunteers. so you can volunteer. you can fund gofundme campaigns like like i
9:20 am
had, you can reach out to organizations like the red cross like medicine, soften chair. there's all sorts of options to still help. and the need is still great. there's millions of refugees, both displaced in ukraine and in the neighboring countries. >> and when you're volunteering overseas, what types of supplies would you say were most in demand of people watching this are interested in donating and break and they break at those donations to you write some sort of group. so the best thing is actually not to send it over for regular folks. like like me is i actually donate to the organizations or >> or go there and buy things there because your money goes much further. so they need the 6. i mean, the basics of of of living like underwear, children's socks and clothing. some are closed. they need food. they need medicine basics. aspirin. tylenol,

hoping to go back overseas. i am hoping to go back. most of the volunteers i'm at worst were so caught up in what they were doing in the community there. they wanted to go back and take >> any final closing messages for people watching this ways that they can help. get involved there. so don't feel that it's not for you that it's too big and that you can't make a difference. you can help with your hands. you can help with donations. just get involved. follow the news that still. >> it's still out there. all right. sari heyman, thank you so much. we appreciate your work and your perspective on this. thank you so much, stephanie. all right. we'll be right back.

>> welcome back to the kron. 4 morning news that's out this half hour with a look at our forecast. dave spahr, the weather center with the very latest and things are slowly starting to heat up out there. aren't they day they are in mixon out. some of this fog bit by bit. hey, here's sfo going on. just a little bit of wispy fog. kind of leftover no delays happening this morning, east bay shoreline. what in improvement? lots of blue skies. you can see a good shot
9:30 am
of the landscape there and of the fog almost entirely gone. we're going to a repeat all this again for tomorrow. >> but still nice day. it looks like a nice weekend. little bit of the toasty side, though, antioch already at 78. lots of 60's for the east bay. 58 for a napa. 60% rows of loving numbers. right now. of course, 54 for san francisco do have excessive heat in place. this is covering the central valley for los banos points to the south. meanwhile, up to the north, not technically in the excessive heat warning, but this will be around in that area in red that you see there until 09:00pm on monday. so it's around for 3 days. looks like the breakdown today. we're trying out 90 by 1 o'clock and 4 94. there are some locations inland that are going to see the upper 90's for today. there were to brsak into the starting tomorrow and into next week. so by july standards, not too bad of a week ahead, but there's still some other systems around us going to get into more of that coming up in a bit. stephanie. >> thanks very much, dave. the recent headlines from the overturn of roe v wade to the
9:31 am
lack of vaccines for the monkeypox outbreak, raising concerns for many in the lgbtq community. joining me live now to discuss is south bay assemblyman evan low, who also chairs the lgbtq legislative caucus. thank you so much for being here with us. good morning, 70. hey, good morning. so, you know, turning first to the monkeypox outbreak earlier this week, we reported people waiting for hours outside of san francisco general hospital to get vaccinated. you. they have seen the video yourself now. we heard state sen wiener and assemblyman matt haney calling the response to monkeypox a public health failure. do you agree with that? >> we've seen this movie before and we've learned some pretty significant lessons. and we have a unique opportunity to focus on the sense of urgency in protecting lives. we know that vaccinations work. we know the best practices that exist with respect to public health. and that's why we're calling upon
9:32 am
the sense of urgency to address this issue so that we can mitigate the type of impact that it can happen in the future. >> and assemblyman, the virus appears to be disproportionately impacting the community. some saying this moment invokes memories of the aids crisis of the can you explain? >> well, similarly, this is the part of the dark history in the past. with respect to the lgbtq community, but somewhat to the hiv aids crisis. we know that monkeypox. it's not just disease and that will impact the lgbt but that we're aching we realize that is disproportionately impacting the community. now. and so that's why it's important that we address this issue so that it does not get into a wider population. and that's why this is important that we address to recognize that we must remove the stigma, but that we must face the facts and that's why we need to get the vaccinations into members of our community, especially here in the bay area. >> and speaking of vaccinations, we know that the
9:33 am
white house is getting more doses from overseas. we've been reporting about that throughout the morning here is your office. is the caucus doing anything to ensure that vaccine distribution goes smoothly. once those doses reach california. >> well, as we realize, again, from the covid pandemic, often times the federal state and local governments are not necessarily working hand in hand. and it's our responsibility. it's our obligation, frankly, to ensure that we're having those conversations and looking towards the accountability and oversight. that is so important. and in real time and getting be. medicine that is so desperately needed in vaccinations to the communities that need them. >> yeah, you heard anything or had any conversations with a state public health officials about vaccine distribution. >> we've been in regular conversations daily, frankly, that help ensure that we're getting regular updates on the supply chain and making sure that we understand where to get it. the vaccinations into
9:34 am
specific communities impacting the lgbt community. how do we make sure that these vaccinations are going to where the communities gather? how do we identify where there are spreader events and how do we make sure that members of the community are educated and informed and equipped to reported real time? >> what is your message to viewers within the lgbtq community are watching this right now? we're really concerned about whether or not they can get. >> access that they one and that they need for monkeypox. >> well, let's not wait until there is a significant event and or an individual, unfortunately would contract monkeypox. let's take the preventative measures. but most importantly, the message is clear. ask your healthcare provider for the vaccine and ask about the eligibility that it's over choir. because what this not on empowered and informed to protect themselves. but secondly, to making sure that health care providers are hearing from individuals and
9:35 am
patients so that there's a greater sense of urgency to make sure that we demanded getting the vaccinations where they are so desperately needed. >> ok, and assembly minute left to talk a bit about the overturn of roe v wade as well. what's the response from the caucus and are you concerned this could open the door to banning same marriage? >> yes, this is an unfortunate reality in the state of california. as of individuals may recall proposition 8 back in 2008 eliminated the rights same couples to marry, which is enshrined in our constitution. so it is actually in our constitution, stephanie, in the state of california. and of course, we realize that our rights are how is at stake. and it's important that we continually reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that love wins in the state of california. so most certainly we are working on looking at constitutional amendment to help in trying to protections of love and
9:36 am
inclusion in the state constitution. just given the previous proposition 8 and given the supreme court a recent ruling that have taken away the rights of in the range of individuals and reproductive freedoms. >> so speaking of that amendment, it sounds like the caucus may want to introduce a ballot measure for voters too. remove prop 8 from the state constitution. so where did discussions currently stand on that? >> i just want to acknowledge that there are so many things that we should be focusing in on whether it be water, wildfires, climate change, housing, affordable housing, homelessness, public safety. but this is an unfortunate reality that we're dealt with. given the recent supreme court rulings. and so we can't keep our eyes off of the. focus on ensuring equal protections under the law in the state of california. and so in looking towards that goal. having dialog in conversations about a poial 2024 ballot
9:37 am
measure during a presidential election. putting this before the california voters to help in trying to protections on same couples to marry. and again, the only reason we be doing this is because of their recent supreme court rulings at the federal in which we realize that our rights are taken away in a row to it day by day. >> so we will keep an eye out for this to potentially be on the ballot in 2024. alright, assemblyman evan low chair of the lgbtq legislative caucus. thank you so much for joining us live this morning. thanks for having me. all right, on to our next story now, the ba 5 omicron sub variant now the dominant strain of coronavirus and 4 times more resistant to our vaccines. it represented 65% of cases just last week alone. now, los angeles is expected to bring back indoor masking mandates kron four's. dan kerman spoke with experts on what this could mean for us here in the bay area.
9:38 am
>> covid-19 community transmission levels have been at red or high in the 9 bay area counties for more than a month. but it's not just the bay area. 42 of california's 58 counties are now experiencing high levels of transmission with los angeles county dropping into the red this week. and now that county is considering reinstituting the indoor mask mandate la county's and san diego counties. >> are now going up. where is the bay area's going up? but not nearly at the same rate. so county, frankly sees the pandemic in that direction. it's going in does not like what they're seeing. and that's where there's talk there about mandates. uc berkeley, infectious disease specialist doctor john swartzberg says reinstituting the indoor mask mandate is something bay area county health officers may start to consider. >> once hospital start filling up, we're at a very high level. >> but not close to where we were in and i think that's probably the most objective number. so today at ucsf about
9:39 am
44 patients across all 4 hospitals in january 150. so still a ways to go. ucsf, infectious disease specialist doctor peter chin. hong says the bay area also differs from la county and a number of ways including vaccinations. it's not just the average vaccination. >> but its vaccination, all age groups that are higher in the bay area in general. so, you know, we may be in a little bit better shape, but i think it's important for all of us not to be complacent and not to ignore the virus. doctors say that means whether mandated or not people should continue mask wearing in certain circumstances certainly wouldn't go into a grocery store. >> or any kind indoor venue with the public without having a very good mask on. >> and one that fits me very well. it was just too to a getting infected right now. >> we reached out to the 9 bay area counties and the state department of public health.
