>> welcome back. an investigation continues this morning after 2 planes collided in mid air thursday afternoon at the watsonville municipal airport. there's video from the scene. one plane crashed into an airport hangar and caught fire. the other crashed into a field next to a neighborhood. 3 people and a dog were all killed. kron four's. justin campbell has the latest in this investigation. >> people have been leaving flowers here at the gate all day. while in tsb investigators have started their investigation into how 2 planes collided in mid air killing 3 people and a dog. >> the wreckage of this single engine cessna lies on the side of a runway in watsonville. the faa says the single engine cessna along with a twin engine cessna. we're trying to land thursday afternoon when they collided. the final moments captured on the radio. work on.

>> final approach. nobody else was on pace final. i went down to the >> we'll be here all day today. gathering factual evidence, ntsb aviation safety investigator, fabian salazar says experts will piece together what led to the fatal collision. we're going to look into the man machine and the environment as we continue with this investigation. weather is absolutely going to be something that we will look into it. >> on surveillance video, you can see the planes preparing to land at the airport. seconds later, it appears to plummet to the ground as witnesses look on. another angle captures the aftermath of the second plane hitting the ground. a fiery explosion and a plume of thick black smoke. it's a it's a small community. and there are people here that certainly are grieving >> everyone is doing everything they can to assist us. we're very much a saddened

by this event. the coroner has not released the identity of the 3 people that were killed in the crash. >> and the ntsb says it will take 14 days to get a preliminary report. but the exact cause of what happened may take up to a year reporting here in watsonville, justin campbell kron. 4 news. >> happening now, redwood city police are investigating a shooting after 2 men shot at one another in a park. it happened around 03:30pm, in the afternoon yesterday at hoover park near spring street and charter street police officers responded to reports of shots fired. they say that a witness saw 2 men walk up to the center of a grass field when one of them pulled out a gun and started firing several rounds. both men took off running and police say the children and parents were actually at the playground when that shooting happened. thankfully no one was hurt. it looks like more catalytic converters are being stolen across the bay area. this time to san francisco. women say they caught a thief in the act

but police and let him go. it happened at around 3 o'clock tuesday morning near 24th in ann's the streets in the richmond dustrict. home security cameras captured a driver parking a honda accord. morgan heller says that she woke up to what she thought sounded like drilling. maybe a catalytic converter being caught. she and her roommate called police. they did get there in time. but officers say they let the guy go as there wasn't enough evidence to make an arrest as the converter had not yet been taken. police also admit that a city-wide outage prevented them from verifying the identity of the man. morgan is also criticizing the police response to attempted thefts. >> it felt like a very stark difference between what we saw last winter in smash-and-grabs in union square and the police response to that type of property crime property that doesn't belong to people that belongs to corporations for says this property crime. >> police also released a

statement that reads in part our job is not to just enforce the law, but to ensure everyone is protected by the law, releasing a possible suspect does not mean the investigation is over. in fact, it means the investigation is just beginning. police also say that the car involved was stolen and was later returned to its owner. >> some happy news now happening today, the san francisco low rider council is hosting the king of streets. car show. the event will also feature free covid testing and information about monkeypox. but first love our co is live in san francisco. the details camilla, are they still setting up out there? >> yeah, that's exactly what's happening right now la here at pier at 32 pier 30 32 behind me the way down there. you can see some of the crew, the low riders actually just arriving. some of the people are still setting up. it's the 40st anniversary of this event, ala and today would be a day to celebrate the low rider

culture, the community and the history. take a look at what people are going to be seeing today. low riders. they are iconic cars there brought very low to the ground and they are part of the next week. i know culture. but more than 4 decades ago, police would target these cars and often associate the people riding them with gang members. the low riders faced a lot of racial injustice and that's when the san francisco low rider council was formed to fight against it to today. the event will display the cars here in the embarcadero to highlight the culture. there's also going to be food vendors as well as raffle prizes, arts and craft vendors. the event starts with the low rider car show and hopping contest. it will end in the mission district after the low riders have cruised through the city. now at the event you can also get covid testing and free covid booster shots. there will also be information about the growing monkeypox outbreaks. now it all starts here at 09:00am like i said at pier 30 at 32 at the parking lots. the low riders will

saturday, august 20th and we're taking a live look outside at san francisco this morning. another hot day. >> as it's going to shape up soon, a look at the skyline right now in san francisco, but still a lot of that haze hanging around for a little bit. meteorologist brittney bagley is in the weather center to break it all down for us. good morning. yeah, it really is about the fog right now as we speak. so here's what we're talking about. i know you were just talking about the fog. you're really excited behind the scenes. you're showing the camera. i thought. >> well, you're the meteorologist today. you've got it going on today. it's true. so let's talk about everything you need to know as we head out this way. so fog cast right now as we speak. we are watching foggy conditions, half moon bay hayward, even

oakland. so as you head out, if you have to work early in the morning, like we do, make sure to leave early and use your low beams as you head out. fog is going to linger around probably until at least 8.45. so something to keep in mind as you plan your day. so now that we know what's going on right now, let's talk about where we're headed. you can see right here at the bay bridge. yeah, yeah, it's foggy. traffic is light, but it's really that fall continue to track for the next couple of hours for you on tv and online. stormtracker 4, really to show you that high pressure system giving us warm temperatures. i think today's going to be the warmest day of the but thankfully this little low up top is going to drop down those temperatures. but we still have to get through today. we have a heat advisory happening now until 07:00pm for places that's county. so keep that in mind. some places like vacaville. we're looking at triple digits. but sacramento, you can see to the east they could see temperatures of 106 not to mention to the north reading could see 100 nights. we're going to see those warm temperatures not as warm to the east, but it's still going

adults more than 1 million dollars will be provided to both private and public high school teachers who start personal finance classes. researchers say that students who have access to financial education, we'll have less dead and a higher quality of life. >> it really does help students to think differently to think like a notch in or some students have even launched but whether they want your business are not thinking like an entrepreneur is helpful to their lives. it may help them to get on career pathways. >> lawmakers hope this new grant will empower california's future workforce. california's unemployment rate has dropped to a new record low and the number of job gains are up. that's according to the governor's office. they report the number of employed californians rose for the 7th consecutive month in july. the state added more than 84,000 non-farm jobs and the private sector achieved full recovery from the pandemic induced

recession. unemployment rates dropped to 3.9%. and that's a new record low. going back to 1976, the state accounted for just more than 16% of the nation's new jobs in july. and a bill that would legalize the pilot program for safe injection sites in california could be signed into law soon. senate bill 57 would create spaces where drugs can be used under supervision. it passed the senate by a slim margin and is now in the hands of governor newsom. supporters of the legislation say that it would help those experiencing addiction. but opponents argue it will only make matters worse by creating crowds of drug users in the area surrounding the sites. if approved, the new injection sites would be part of a 5 year pilot program in oakland, san francisco and los angeles. for your help this morning. more than 14,000 monkeypox cases of the virus have been reported in the u.s. since may of this year. and now some

senators are urging congress to find money for testing and treatment and to finance domestic production of monkeypox vaccines through the defense production act. >> this crisis is going to deepen and broaden unless we address it immediately. and factors that are now producing either. kinds medicine could and would be compelled to start producing this kind of act. >> so the cdc is urging everyone to stay vigilant to reduce becoming infected and the white house did not respond directly to the lawmakers request. but so the president continues to weigh all the options to stop the spread of monkeypox. the state has now reported more than 2600 probable or confirmed cases since the outbreak first began during a in just yesterday, the state director of public health said california still has not received enough doses to vaccinate those at highest

risk. kron four's dan kerman reports. >> california health officials say of the more than 2500 patients with monkeypox in the state. only 2% have had to be hospitalized and there have been no deaths. still, they say getting enough vaccine continues to be an uphill battle. we communicated to the cdc. >> several weeks ago that we we've needed at least 600,000 to 800,000 doses. he'd be able to vaccinate the average population. in callan, in california. so right now we don't we do not have enough. >> during a telebriefing friday, doctor tomas aragon said well, federal guidelines advise those infected to stay home until all monkeypox lesions are fully healed and a fresh layer of skin is formed at the lesion cites state guidelines offer what they call a more practical approach. for those who have a limited number of lesions on the part of the body where there's no risk to exposing others if they can cover up the lesions completely.

>> welcome back apple is alerting customers about some serious security flaws that could allow hackers to take over control of iphones, ipads and mac computers. the company has really software updates to patch up security gap across both ios and safari. and they're recommending users update the affected devices, which include iphone 6 s and later models, newer, ipads and mac computers running as moderate. the flaw may also affect some ipad models. >> the federal trade commission is launching a new effort to protect your online data. >> the agency is working on rules to control the massive lot of data that private

companies collect those companies then sell that information to other online businesses to better target advertisement to certain groups. privacy advocates are applauding the ftc's efforts. well, online business trade groups are trolling. the idea calling it government overreach. the ftc will hold its first public forum on this september 8th. and for the first time ever more americans are watching streaming services than regular television. that's according to the new data from nielsen which said streaming in the u.s. captured 34.8% of viewership in july. a 23% spike from last year. cable accounted for 34.4% broadcast television was a distant 3rd and it's not great news for the theater industry either. regal cinemas has just filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. well, still ahead on kron 4 morning news and open nonprofit is figuring out how

emergency needs that we need to hurry up and open up that care center soon as possible. >> tommy's empowerment does a lot of good work. thousands of dollars were lost in the destroyed packages, including food, diapers and clothing. this organization is looking for konations to help offset the costs. we have a link to send donations to homies empowerment. up on our website. kron 4 dot com. we're now learning that the contractor accused of stealing from san francisco's high-rise apartment has been fired. the property management group that owns 33 to hama in san francisco's south of market district sent us a statement friday saying they have increased security measures and now all contractors are escorted and recorded by a security officer when entering a residence unit. this response comes after residents claimed contractors who are hired to repair flood damage are stealing from vacated units. the high rise in the city's south of market district has been vacant since

flooding sense. that happened twice this summer. some residents have been told that they won't be allowed back until next year. >> 2 men have been hurt in a shooting early friday morning in the east bay. this all happened at the courtyard at 65th street apartments in emeryville. >> one victim is in stable condition. the other in serious condition. police have identified. 23 year-old jalen buck as a person of interest in this case and are now looking for him because they want to asked some questions. so anyone with information about the case or where but could be is asked to call emeryville pd. there were at least 2 reports of credit card skimmers that have been found recently around the bay area. one was found over at the 7.11 on 87th street in broad more. that's near daly city. police say that it was a card reader for about 2 hours after being placed there around 5 in the morning on wednesday. police are now looking for a man that was captured on surveillance

video. you see there and police are also trying to find out who put a credit card skimmer over at the bank of america over at the cochrane plaza in morgan hill. that skimmer was discovered on august 10th, a small camera and the piece of rubber stripping were found inside of the atm. a new poll shows waning support for president biden and a split between voters within his own party on whether he should seek a second term conference. we all reports support for governor gavin newsom's, potential candidacy. he's picking up steam. >> 16 alternatives to another term for president joe biden represented to registered democrats in recent poll conducted by the berkeley institute of government studies and governor gavin newsom and vermont senator bernie sanders topped the list tied with 13% support. >> vice president kamala harris followed with 10%. governor newsom has not publicly commit to a presidential run right now.

should seek a second term in office with 46% in favor. and 46% overall. 9200 registered voters were surveyed and 61% say president biden should back down. >> police get all kron. 4 >> for your health, the world health organization reports covid cases have dropped globally and less people are dying and its weekly update. the health agency reported 5.4 million new cases last week. and that's actually a drop of 24% from the week before deaths also fell by 6% but have remained high in asia. overall numbers are down worldwide except for the western pacific and southeast asia. time to prep for the beginning of flu season. and flu shots are now available at cvs pharmacy. this year, the pharmacy chain said that it will be easier for families to get vaccinated during the same visit. so if you're still behind on your covid-19 vaccine, there's some good news for you.

>> california health officials say of the more than 2500 patients with monkeypox in the state. only 2% have had to be hospitalized and there have been no deaths. still, they say getting enough vaccine continues to be an uphill battle. we communicated the cdc. >> several weeks ago that we we've needed at least 600,000 to 800,000 doses. he'd be able to vaccinate the at-risk population. in callan, california. so right now we don't we do not have enough. >> during a telebriefing friday, doctor tomas aragon said well, federal guidelines advise those infected to stay home until all monkeypox lesions are fully healed and a fresh layer of skin is formed at the lesions cites state guidelines offer what they call a more practical approach. for those who have a limited number of lesions on the part of the body where there's no risk to exposing others if they can cover up the lesions completely. >> the lesions have have stopped increasing for 48

been talking about this all morning long, but it's still interesting. so in san francisco, in the month of august, average temperature should be around. 66 >> it's a 45 and we're already at 60. so it's breezy, but it just sets a tone that, yeah, it's going to be hot to the south san jose 62 and even to the north santa rosa. 58 napa. 63 oakland. so a little foggy for you, 62 and you can see right here, hayward 63. so here is my favorite tolls. the almanac. it really sets up the town. you can see above average temperatures for pretty much around the region, especially santa rosa averages. 85 that we said we're going to be at 94, but the big story. but everybody wants to know save you some money and they see for sure is sunday as that cool down with that low pressure system. so again, today, 97 inland bay, 79 coast, 67, but we have that drop in temperatures. we're looking at 89 tomorrow in the bay. 74 in the coast. 63 so just have to get through the foggy warm day and then we'll get a little bit of a break tomorrow. thanks for running.

>> well, by now, we've all heard that cigarette smoke is bad for your health. but what about cannabis smoking weed is legal in many states and it's getting more popular. so to learn more cardiovascular researchers at ucsf are prepared to do clinical trials to learn how it can affect your blood vessels. they want to pick chronic pot smokers and people who are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke $100 to participate to learn more. we're joined by doctor matt springer. doctor, thank you so much for taking the time to explain your mission. >> so the the goal of this study which is led by doctor lee. it in my research group and is funded by the state of california and funding from the often works foundation and the roy thomas medical foundation. the goal is to learn what the cardiovascular impacts are. >> a marijuana use. and that's by smoking edibles, leave vaporizing, et cetera, and

particularly how it's affected by the exposure, frequent exposure to secondhand smoke and the rationale for this. the reason that we're interested in this is we've known for a long time that smoking tobacco is bad for you. people will avoid secondhand smoke from tobacco, but a lot of people still assumed that marijuana smoke is harmless and they assume that it was, you know, tobacco smoke is bad because of the nicotine that marijuana smoke is basically just thc and cbd. and they avoid. are they? they ignore all of the other thousands of chemicals that you get when you burnt plant material of any sort of many of which are toxic. and so a lot of people who would avoid tobacco smoke don't seem to care being exposed to marijuana smoke. and we have reason to believe from previous work we've done in rats that marijuana smoke has the same kinds of cardiovascular harmful effects that tobacco smoke does. but it's all been extrapolation from are at work. we don't

know exactly for humans yet. and so now we have the opportunity to do this. so we're very excited about it. so what we're doing is we've got an ongoing study is underway. it's about halfway through a two-year study. we're bringing people into the cardiovascular clinic at the ucsf mission, bay location. we're recruiting people who are chronic marijuana smokers. chronic tobacco smokers is a comparison. people who are who avoid smoke, but are, you they don't smoke and the avoid tobacco smoke, but they are chronically exposed to marijuana. secondhand smoke. people who use le fevre risers people also who take thc in various forms like the edibles and vaping thc and also as a control group, people who are not exposed to any of these things. so basically everyone, although you have to be between the ages of 18 50. >> what can participants expect from this study you when they come into the lap? >> so it takes about 2 will a

vascular measurements put a blood pressure cuff on the arm inflated up, use ultrasound to measure what your blood vessels are doing. this. a lot of bases. there is a blood drive urine samples, saliva sample. it's all confidential. and as you get $100 for your time. and and that's basically it. >> so it's a one-time visit for each person that participates. >> yeah, it's a one-time visit. >> and then if you can explain if it's found that this can be detrimental to your health, the what exactly can happen as a result to either your hard or really what can go wrong here. >> yeah, well, i should say that we're we're actually intentionally recruiting healthy people. so smoking of any sort causes various card, cardiovascular disease. but we're not actually looking for people who already have cardiovascular disease. we're looking for signs. the cardiovascular risk is increasing. because of this exposure. so we're looking for people who are already

healthy, but the future that we're looking at with blood vessels is that your blood vessels have the ability to grow and shrink to open up wide and took that down in real time to respond to how much blood flow needs to pass. and that's the mark of a healthy vessels that are impaired in this ability, our unhealthy. and that's a mark you have cardiovascular complications in the future. people got hardening of the arteries, increase chances of heart attack and stroke, etcetera, etcetera. so we're looking for these early signs to cardiovascular disease. could be down the road. and so if your blood vessels are are not flexible like this, this is a sign of increased cardiovascular risk. and there are also various chemicals that circulate in the bloodstream to tell you whether you're in a healthy state are not a healthy state and that we're going to be looking for those also for the blood drive. >> well, thank you so much. so for anyone who would like to participate, you can take a

>> good point. thanks, brittany. we're following up an investigation after 2 planes collided mid air thursday afternoon over in watsonville. this is video of the aftermath. one plane crashed into an airport hangar. the other into a field nearly missing neighborhood. 3 people and a dog were all killed. kron four's justin campbell reports. >> people have been leaving flowers here at the gate all day. while ntsb investigators have started their investigation into how 2 planes collided in mid air killing 3 people and a dog. >> the wreckage of this single engine cessna lies on the side of a runway in watsonville. the faa says the single engine cessna along with a twin engine cessna. we're trying to land thursday afternoon when they collided. the final moments captured on the radio. on. >> final approach. somebody else was on pace final. i went

take 14 days to get a preliminary report. but the exact cause of what happened may take up to a year reporting here in watsonville, justin campbell kron. 4 news. >> police report the 2 men shot at one another in a redwood city park. this all went down at hoover park yesterday at 3.30, in the afternoon. that's near spring and turner streets. when officers responded, they were told that there were shots fired and the witness said that they saw 2 men walked up to one another in the center of the field. one of them pulled out a gun and started firing several rounds. both men took off running and police said that they were actually kids and parents at the playground in the area when that shooting happened. so thankfully, nobody was hurt. there's now a reward being offered in the east bay by per berkeley pd. it's a $50,000 reward for information to help solve the case of the murder of alex goodwin junior. he was killed on august 19th back in 2016 in his family

home in berkeley, san pablo park neighborhood. detectives believe that somebody out there has more information about this case. so the police department said even the smallest detail could be critical to help solve that crime. u.s. district judge overseeing the theranos cases decided to take victim impact statements into consideration this before deciding just how long elizabeth holmes and her business partner sunny balwani should be sentenced. the pair was convicted of defrauding investors out of hundreds of millions of dollars with their blood testing company. they face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and millions of dollars in fines. the local news, a catalytic converters are being stolen across the bay area's we have seen in recent years. and this time to san francisco, women say they caught a thief in the act, but police let them go. it happened at around 3 o'clock tuesday morning near 24th in ann's the streets in the richmond district. home security cameras captured a

>> so the quest is a film festival 2 decades in the making born right here in the bay area in the south bay to be exact. it's a marriage of innovation and art, thanks. silicon valley tech meets hollywood. about 2 to 300 movies will be screened through the end of the month. many of them world premieres. it's already kicked off with another event tonight at the california theater in san jose. joining to talk about the film now, if that is a thing that crosby, thank you for joining us. >> thank to be here, well, how's it going so far? >> it's got awesome. the festival has kicked off as of tuesday and we are entering our first weekend. we had our opening night event with jim gaffigan, which is a huge success as well as the red carpet. and we also had another red carpet last night with several counts premiering. so it's been a blast. >> so how does this festival intersect? the theme of tech and aren't exactly i heard something about virtual reality experiences in previous years.

>> yes, so we do like to consider ourselves that bridge between silicon valley tech and the film and media world being born here in silicon valley, we recognize that difference that these innovations make in people's ability to tell their story. so whether that's virtual reality, which we do have a platform for people to submit virtual reality work to our festival or whether that's artificial intelligence or really anything in between. so we really like to bridge that gap. >> there are so many movies being showcased in from all over the world. so what kind of story lines can people look forward to? and do we have any local filmmakers participating? >> we do well. we do have artists who have submitted their films to us from over. 55 countries. so that being said, there's absolutely something for everybody. we have drama. we have comedy. we have any documentary features. we have many lgbtq features, one of my favorite since premiering at this year's festival is a documentary called we were high fee and it's actually all about the

men are hurt after shooting early friday morning in the east bay. this happened at the courtyard apartments at 65th street in emeryville. one victim is in stable condition. the other in serious condition. police identified 23 year-old jalen book as a person of interest. in this case, they are looking for him and they want to talk to him and ask some questions. so anybody with information or if they know where book is that they're asked to call emeryville police. we're learning 2 reports of credit card skimmers have been found recently around the bay area. let's take a look. one was found at 7.11 on 87th street in a town called broad more. that's near daly city. police say that it was on a card reader for about 2 hours after being placed there at around 05:00am on wednesday. police are now looking for a man that was seen on surveillance video. there he is. meanwhile, police are also trying to find who put a credit card skimmer at the bank of america over at the cochrane plaza in morgan hill. that skimmer was found on august 10th, a small camera

experts are forecasting for the future. >> as we roll into election season, the biden administration hopes drivers are pumped by the recent drop in gasoline prices. 65 consecutive days of declines. so yes, a bit of much-needed breathing room. white house economic adviser jared bernstein said the president has worked hard to bring down costs for drivers. he points to efforts like the release of oil from the strategic petroleum reserve and a waiver that allows more widespread use of gasoline mixed with ethanol made from corn, not crude oil. it's hard to bend a global price. i think we've done a lot in that regard. the president's team wants to see this downward trend continue. but experts say there are a number of things that could send prices back up the driving habits of americans as well as the global price for oil. and you really can impact what's going on somewhere else around the world and triple a spokesman, andrew gross says keep an eye on the sky as many american oil refineries are clustered along the gulf coast. we're heading into the
