whenever heartburn strikes get fast relief with tums. it's time to love food back. ♪ tum tum tum tum tums ♪ >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 7. >> hey, good morning. and thank you so much for joining us on the kron. 4 morning news. i'm stephanie lin. it is saturday october the 22nd we're covering plenty of news for you this morning. let's check in on the weather first with dave sphar. good morning, david. good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. quite a bit of cloud cover. we're dealing with the start things off. that won't be the case as we get into the afternoon. start to clear the stuff out. >> kind of breezy today. mild temperatures. but the really big issue as we get into tomorrow will be some offshore winds, quite extensive. they will be to covering a lot of the north and the east bay,

particularly quick shot of what's going on half moon bay see quite a bit of cloud cover right now as we speak. just a little blue colors, ation from the camera, though, onshore winds for now. this is because we're in the midst of the system dropping south. you tend to get these fronts. this part of the world you get on shore when the drop south when their past us, it turns off shore to get the consolation. usually us some rain that is going to be very sparse with all of this. we're getting a little bit of fog to start things off. that's quickly gone. and when i said gone, i mean, gone all the way into tomorrow morning. it's still not here. that's because the offshore winds kick in at that point. temperature check for you. real quick lower 60's going on over most of the real estate. we can see nevada with 64. 57, even san francisco with lots of cloud cover. and the contrast for you, half a dozen degrees or so behind in a bit. we'll check into where the statement stand to stephanie. >> very much dave. our top story, a community continues to mourn this morning after the death of a san jose state football player hit and killed by a school bus. we now know

his identity. 18 year-old camden right? the university tells us make right past in the crash friday morning. just a few blocks away from the university. chp says mike wright was riding his scooter north on 10th street when he was hit by a san jose unified school district bus carrying 14 students. chp says none of the students on the bus were hurt. well, that tragic news coming just one day before the san jose state football team was set to play against new mexico state. that game has now been postponed. so instead of getting ready to travel to new mexico. the san jose spartans gathered at the scene of the crash to set up a memorial for camden. they cried and they shared their love for their teammate. >> i love him so much. everything he's done. everything you need to for this program. means the world to everybody. >> we bring healing upon his family. his friends. as loved

ones and whatever else, the testing blitz and the like. >> san jose state head football coach sent us a statement saying, quote, >> camden had a bright future ahead of him and everyone in this community that had the opportunity to spend time with him. >> knew that candy will always be in our hearts and he will be profoundly missed. before coming to the bay area for college mcwright graduated from saint genevieve high school and pan around the city in southern california where he was a 2 time league mvp. the principal there speaking with us saying camden was an excellent athlete and a great young man overall. >> every coach. loved coaching him. he was a favorite, i think of every teacher who ever just excelled at everything that he did and hours is the school where we pre k we have a preschool. we all the way up through 12th grade. we have over 1000

students on our campus. cam was known by every single student on the campus. and he was loved by every single student on the campus. >> the principal has he spoken with canon is parents who plan to travel to skews me san jose today to bring him home. meantime, san jose state says it is making counselors available to students to help them through this very difficult time. also in san jose, police are investigating a hit and run involving a pedestrian and the area of blossom hill road and snow avenue. police say a woman was hit around 7.20 friday night while crossing a street outside of a crosswalk. she suffered life-threatening injuries. police say they don't have a description of the car involved in this collision at this point. and puzzling story of a car found buried on the grounds of a 15 million dollar mansion in atherton. investigators are

now trying to figure out exactly why that mercedes benz was found on the property and if any other crimes were committed, police say landscapers reported finding the barrett sports car while working at the home thursday morning. kron four's dan thorn has the latest on the investigation. >> the mystery at atherton mansion continues as police carefully dig out a stolen mercedes benz found buried in a backyard. we still don't know what kind of investigation were conducting. we don't know if this is going to be a criminal investigation or if this will be a non-criminal investigation. investigators say the car was buried in the 1990's and was reported stolen by palo alto police in september of 1992. the current homeowners did not own the home at the time. >> but police say a previous owner with a nefarious past named john liu may provide clues beyond the grave, the stall, mister liu, all who lived in that house for some years. and after had checkered history, he's no longer alive

but had a checkered history of actually being convicted back in the late 60's early 70's. >> a murder that conviction was later overturned. information is still scarce about why the sports car was buried 4 to 5 feet underground at a home on stockbridge avenue at the scene. cadaver canines have so far been unable to locate any human remains. the dogs have only given what investigators are calling a slight reaction, which can be a number of things or nothing. it could be human remains. they could be reacting to blood. they could be reacting to >> bones. they could be acting to human fama. it could be any one of those combinations of things that the dogs are reacting to. >> neighbors of the home tell us they are puzzled by this discovery. and that is the creepiest reporting in atherton. dan thorn kron. 4 news >> records show 3 families have owned that home since it was built in 1990. but as dan just mentioned, johnny wu, the

man who owned the home in 1994 did have a criminal history in was accused of plotting to saying kids 1 million dollar yacht in the san francisco bay so that he could collect insurance money. police say he paid off some people to sink the boat. just be on the golden gate bridge. well, turns out the people he hired were undercover agents, but his rap sheet goes back even further in 1966, jurors convict of murder in los angeles. he served a 3 year sentence and then a little more than a decade later, he spent another 3 years in prison for attempted murder. the san mateo county district attorney says that lou died in 2015 and to be clear here after 10 police have not said if there's any connection between you and that buried car on the property. as for the family who lives at the mansion now they are not currently being considered suspects in this case because >> police determined the car was buried on the property.

at the bay bridge. a different perspective from what we would normally show you. but it was looking pretty chilly out there. there it is right now. again, some cloud cover out there. i know the day's been tracking all the weather conditions for us outdoors all morning. so dave, how long should we expect conditions like that to persist through the day? >> well, good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. we have the same kind of thing to from uc berkeley. as you can see. that's that's a fog checking in as well. now all of this moisture and all these that's going to break up to open up the skies this afternoon. it could be kind of breezy on short will be and then comes the flipped by the time we get to tonight and into tomorrow. that's an offshore wind. we have been talking about that for a while. and with that comes some issues for us. there is some safety power shut-offs will be found on the north bay a little bit with all of this. again, we're talking sunday monday zone for all of that. and the winds are probably do the shifting act tonight. so what we have so far, all of this orange kind of yellow cover we have for you is a fire weather watch. solano county is the one that sticks out all of this. basically the short answer to

this is this is a different weather office than covers most of the rest of the bay that comes from andre. this comes in the sacramento office. this will probably all be converted to a red flag warning probably later on for today. before you be good for air today. but this fire weather watch tomorrow. noon to 8 because that's when the totality of the biggest offshore winds will probably be. having said all of that marching forward. our temperatures lower 60's cover the east bay shoreline, kind of mild to start because all this cloud cover, which will again be broken up as we get to the afternoon but even into tomorrow, looks like those numbers will be fairly cool. now, let's watch things through. look at all these clouds are we can see even on futurecast, right? you got that right. starting to clear out as we get to the afternoon, still some stray showers holding on a little bit up to the mountains. get to tonight there. it's gone as far as moisture is concerned, there's not more to see for sunday, obviously with offshore winds by that point getting to those winds, the arrows all coming in from the coast. so little breezy this afternoon on shore will be

there's the flip out of the northwest later on due north, as you can see, all throughout the north bay and some good coverage for the east bay as well. right now, there's no statements for the east bay, but it's all concentrated in the north bay for right now. so putting this all together, we've got early fog clouds afternoon, clearing mild inland highs in the 70's tomorrow. those offshore winds dry, mild for those temperatures, 70's and 60's around the base will actually be kind of cool. even those that offshore wind and then for much of next week, sunny to start off that its variable cloudy for the rest the week and the weather pattern, which will show you later, it's in the right direction. northwesterly. that's we want. all the systems coming from. we may not get much from that this week, but that pattern is good. as the season starts to change for today afternoon, clearing mild 67 san francisco, oakland, about 70 68 san jose. the bigger board, you have lower 70's well inland. we'll get more into that all coming up. and just a bit 70. all right. thanks very much, dave. >> a noose over in center in san francisco is raising

safety concerns awry center in the city's south of market district takes in people struggling with opioids, meth and other substances and gives them a place to sober up and get help. but one business owner says this has become a breeding ground for crime and other dangerous activity. >> all my employees carry pepper spray and tasers. the neighbors are carrying pepper spray and tasers. i mean, this is not how we're supposed to live and it's also not how we're supposed to. it's not our responsibility. >> the city's department of public health says the facility has been successful in taking in more than 1000 people in providing them with lifesaving medication. well, your money, president biden's student loan forgiveness program could be in jeopardy after a federal appeals court temporarily halted the program. kron four's justine waltman has more on the court's decision and what this means for people trying to apply for relief. >> the student loan forgiveness, application page still active but getting money

back is on hold. a federal appeals court issued an administrative stay temporarily blocking president joe biden's plan to cancel billions of dollars in federal student loans. the white house press secretary tweeted this. the ruling does not prevent people from applying for student debt relief, nor does it stop the federal government from reviewing the applications. the administration just cannot distribute relief until the court makes a ruling. republicans have sharply criticized the program for being too expensive. the congressional budget office estimates the program will cost about 400 billion dollars over the next 3 decades. i wouldn't call it forgiveness because you're not getting anything. you're just shifting it over to taxpayers. the biden administration officially launched the program on monday. federal courts dismissed 2 republican led challenge is to the program on thursday before friday's court ruling. the president criticized republicans for putting the relief for millions in limbo. their outrage is wrong and it's super critical. the white

house says this plan will help some 43 million people pay off some of their student loan debt. >> and vows to fight the gop challenge in the newsroom. i'm justine waldman. kron. 4 news. >> well, company that owns snapchat is closing its san francisco office. snap says the facility was not being used. much sense. the shift to remote work during the pandemic. the company announced a few months ago it was laying off 20% of its staff, a snap as several other bay area offices, including one in palo alto. developing this morning, the widow of a former usc football player is suing the ncaa after she says they failed to protect her husband from repetitive head trauma. the lawsuit claims matthew guy died in 2018 from permanent brain damage caused by numerous blows to the head while playing football. but lawyers for the and see double-a blame d's death on heavy drinking drugs and other

health problems. experts say this case could have big implications for similar cases going forward. >> i think that this is going to have a lot of eyeballs on it because in the legal community, especially with regard to professional and amateur sports, a jury trial verdict, a verdict against the ncaa organs. the nfl after a jury trial will be used by every other plaintiffs attorney in the country. we've had a lot of settlements, thousands of settlements, hundreds of settlements over the last 10, 20 years involving professional sports, but never a jury trial bird. and that's what everybody is going to be looking at here. >> this is only the second wrongful death and personal g% injury lawsuit to go to trial and it could be the first of its kind to reach a jury. still ahead on the kron 4 morning news, the last 48 hours have brought a lot of good news for the san francisco forty-niners. >> as they get ready to take on the kansas city chiefs. we break it all down for you after the break.

half hour with a look at our forecast updates bar the weather center with the very latest. outdoor is hey, good morning, 70. good morning, everybody. and look at this. we have moisture in the area which >> shelley was what we're celebrating. that is because this will not be the case by tonight. and it looks like all the way through monday. in fact, we have a dry offshore wind event that's just waiting to to unfold because right now we're playing through the front that's bringing us the onshore winds and breezy conditions today, too. but that's all coming in from the coast that brings that moisture and then the return flows. what we're worried about tonight. tomorrow, temperature check for you. fairly mild. even with all this given not much the way of rain, of course, happening with any of this except maybe a little pocket of drizzle here. they're particularly near the water lower 60's. pretty much covers. it will probably be a little cooler tomorrow. complements of dry air. here's the comparison sake for you doesn't degrees or so at half a dozen degrees above where we were this time from yesterday. there's a snapshot of those winds on shore. they are that's going to change are probably in the next up 12 hours or so being pretty much off shore numbers

>> according to the campaign to elect with jenkins, the protest presented security concerns considering the lack of additional security infrastructure which they say allowed the protesters to push their way into the debate after being told not to enter by organizers, the da's campaign consultants and kron 4 a statement that reads, quote, the district attorneys security detail sole responsibility is to keep the district attorney safe and they made the ultimate decision for her to leave as the city's top prosecutor, she faces higher public safety risk and the safety of her and her family is always a top priority, unquote. while san francisco state grad student joshua little who recorded the videos has mixed feelings about the da not sticking around. he says he understands the motivation behind the students who protested because i think that, you know, leaders candidates especially should be held accountable for the positions that they take. >> that's county for that. but at the same time,

>> i think a lot of people are saying like all us is here her out. and let's hear, you know what people have to say. i think yes, that is true. but the same time it's like if you take a lot of policies and including, you know, putting 16 17 olds and trying them as adults like it's not surprising that a lot of young people are going to be furious at >> in san francisco, has made you run for >> and kron 4 is your local election headquarters and tomorrow. big news governor gavin newsom and republican candidate senator brian dolly face off in a debate postal show that governor newsom leads by a wide margin for that role of governor. and dolly said if he's elected, he will work to suspend the gas tax, declare homelessness a public health crisis and introduce a comprehensive water plan to combat the drought. governor newsom meantime, has focused heavily on reproductive rights heading into the election. so make sure you tune into kron 4 news

on sunday and we'll make sure to give you a recap of all the highlights coming out of that debate. 2 months into the school year and west contra costa unified is still struggling to fill teacher vacancies. there are 18 vacancies at the elementary schools about 16 at both middle and high schools. and 26 special education vacancies. the district is onboarding several new teachers and is expecting a 27 new educators in december from the philippines through the teach us a program, hundreds of other positions, including custodians counselors, librarian speech, pathologist, and classroom aides are also available for those interested. in the south bay lost at a school district has agreed to pay 5 million dollars to 2 men sexually abused by an elementary school teacher joseph, who was sentenced to 35 years in prison last november for molesting 8 other former students at blossom hill elementary. one victim was

abused in early 2020 and will receive a settlement of $900,000. another victim was abused around 2008 2009. and we'll get 4.2 million dollars. in san francisco. a business owner is fed up after her jewelry store is targeted for the 4th time the theft captured on surveillance cameras. kron four's gayle ong has reaction from that shop owner. the owner of the shop says this is not the first time her jewelry store has been targeted by thieves. the most recent that happened wednesday, a bracelet. >> and gold necklace were stolen. the merchandise worth $6,000. >> and that's when mabel zhang chased after this man who ran off with her merchandise surveillance video capturing it all. it was around 12, 30 wednesday afternoon. at first the man calmly walks in the chung says she remembered him. he was here before 2 weeks

afternoon. this longtime customer checks in on sean was still reeling from losing thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. i should be. running my business not to have to worry about these kind of it. >> people forced to close. they're shocked this small business stealing. >> yeah, very stressful class. >> john reported this incident to sfpd. she says she plans to lock her doors during business hours and install a buzzer for customers in the studio. gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> and the east bay, a cannabis dispensary in oakland says burglars continue to target them. the latest burglary happening just yesterday morning. and you can see in this video here read a car slammed into a whiterman just outside of ivy hill. cannabis. the owner is think the rv here was trying to get the van out of the way to ram in the front of the store. what they don't realize that a security guard. he's inside of

that white van there. you can see someone in red and that red sweater come up to the car as it speeds away. and later, a bystander in a blue shirt came to check on what happened. that bystander ended up getting robbed and beaten off camera. we don't have a video of that because that did happen off camera and police are investigating who was involved in that assault. but this dispensary we know has been targeted 2 other times this year. and you're watching video now of a break-in at ivy hill that happened exactly 2 months ago. the owner thinks that every break in has been done by the same group of thieves. so really it does feel like a little bit of a pattern here. we're seeing various businesses in the bay area being attacked multiple times. >> coming up on the kron, 4 morning news, increasing electricity demands as one bay area city considering pop putting power lines underground. we tell yo

directly out of the north. as you'll notice there. this puts us about sunday morning at 10, 15. that statement that i talked about earlier for solano county typically kicks in at noon tomorrow and is going to be with us during sunday. so what this does is it pushes all this dry air in the wake of the front that we're getting now, bush's all this drier and here in this marine layer has to chip away at that, which is going to have to do all early next week. let's get to the moisture part. lots of moisture. we have to strrt off with how green that is okay. put away the green colored pencils. now we don't need much anymore. unfortunately, tomorrow morning. look at this. this is the so-called recovery around the bay. after all that dry air pushed on through. so we go through the day on sunday and continues offshore winds. look at those numbers fall. only little copy out with this is the air is not going to be that hot. so it's relative humidity. that means that cooler air doesn't tennis support as much moisture in it. so therefore, it's artificially kind of low with numbers like that. but still that's very dry. and it stays dry around the bay area monday morning. hello. so

we're banking off of a dry atmosphere after all this is said and done sitting down south real quick along the coast of mexico, it's another one. max winds, one 30. this puts in the major category category 4 and here comes, boom, a strike. it looks like tomorrow as a category 3 hurricane west coast of mexico. they just had one right here in general location. there was not a month so ago. it's going to miss cabo saint lucas. so that's good know anybody down there and becoming a tropical low just before it reaches texas and all that moisture will be thrown out in 2. the south central plains. all right. back on the home front towards the western pacific up north. this is what we're watching all next week. kind clear patch. then boom. here comes more cloud cover into tuesday, making a stray sprinkle free cosmetic. i understand. but the good news is that brings us little opportunity for showers throughout the entire week. we'll be checking your 4 zone forecast coming up in a little bit, stephanie. all right. looking forward to a day. >> el every year we hear plenty about the fall colors in bloom on the east coast.

but the colorful change of season is not limited to the northeast. our travel enthusiast in redmond joins us now with some other spots where we can enjoy autumn colors. and some of them are even right here in the bay area, right? dana? >> they are. you know, it's always hard to say goodbye to summer, but fall colors kind of help lessen that below. ever thought about taking a trip to kind of see autumn in full 4 years. there's more destinations that you might want to consider than you realize some spots just show off a little differently. how's that a way to put it? but starting bail giant groves of aspen. it puts on this impressive low in fall. this is the top of the rockies. scenic byway also known as highway. 24, it's a great stretch to soak in raleigh n the timing of the peak colors obviously varies from year to year. but just to give you some perspective, i shot this video about 3 weeks ago are right at the end of september

highway. 24 is really easy to navigate. there's plenty of places to pull off the road. you have beautiful scenic spots, mainly bridge. you're going want to pull off and take photos. when you see stops like you also go right by camp hale, continental divide, national monument. this was designated a national monument. gosh, i think just a little more than a week ago and it's where we're 2 soldiers from the 10th mountain division were trained to fight on skis. lots to see in this section of the country. now, alaska, this is a spot that i think tends to catch people off-guard. when you think about colors fall can come and go pretty quickly here. but one of my favorite spots, denali national park and preserve. the fire weekend terms from this pink to kind of a rusty red and then you've got what are called low bush blueberries. those crimson spots and visitors aren't the only ones interested in those

blueberries. this is bear season. this is when those bears are out looking for those berries so they can fill up and eat as much as possible before they call it a winter. so you've got this wonderful combination of fall colors and you've got good odds of seeing grizzly bears out and about kind of getting their fill before. they want to call it for the and alaska is really important. fall colors are limited to pull it. fall starts or were a season august. 21st this season kicks off. it will run through almost the end of april. you don't need snow to see beautiful you never know from night to night what's going to happen or what? time of night it's going to happen. just to give your perspective, these images were shot at 3.30, in the morning. no, i wasn't up all night. i was staying at the mount mckinley, princess wilderness lodge. and it's one of my favorite hotel amenities

in alaska. they called me because the lights were out. so there's no missing a night's sleep. if the lights take the night off. so it's just one of those amazing things. and you don't need a plane to get. this is the big area. we have wine country, sonoma county. i shot this just a couple days ago. it's just getting started. so if you have a day off, maybe come up, you can pair fall colors with your favorite winery or maybe go hiking. jack london state historic park has i think more than 3 miles of trails are close to 30 miles of trail. a lot of them are fringed with vineyards. it's a great way to get outside taking some fall colors, get some exercise. how can you complain? yeah, absolutely. and we are so lucky to be so close to such beautiful. >> locations in the bay area. you mentioned sonoma and i loved all that video that you should especially the bears running around. i think that was alaska.

advisory. but it is the offshore winds were worried about. by tonight's there's the fog drifts out of here. pretty quickly. and it does not come back tonight. as you can see that sunday morning. the fog not with us, might be some scattered clouds, but not the fog lower 60's at work here for temperature. check for you. that's a little bit warmer than they were this time from yesterday. here's the clearing job. looks like turning mostly sunny into the afternoon with temperatures in the lower 70's well inland. what we're saying all this, the other thing we're watching as a fire weather watch solano county, sacramento, central valleys. that's all that's directly impacted. but we are seeing because of these offshore winds. also, there's reports that will be safety power shut-offs for napa. also sonoma county going on lake county as well for sunday into monday. we'll have more about those winds coming up in just a bit. stephanie, thanks very much, david. appreciate that. >> our top story, a community continues to mourn after the death of a san jose state football player hit and killed by a school bus. we now know

his identity. 18 year-old camden make right. the university tells us make right passed away during the crash friday morning. just a few blocks away from the university. chp says mcwright was riding his scooter north on 10th street when he was hit by a san jose unified school district bus carrying 14 students. chp says none of the students on the bus were hurt. and this tragic news coming just one day before the san jose state football team was set to play against new mexico state. that game has now been postponed. so instead of getting ready to travel to new mexico, the san jose spartans gathered at the scene of the crash to set up a memorial for canon. make right. and they shared their love for their team mate. so much. >> everything he's done. everything you need to for this program. he means the world to everybody. >> we bring healing upon his family. his friends. as loved ones and whatever else he touched the blood. like

cam was known by every single student on the campus. and he was loved by every single student on the campus. >> the principal also tells us he's spoken with camden's parents who plan to travel to san jose today to bring him home. meantime, san jose state says it is making counselors available to students to help them through this difficult time. also in san jose, police are investigating a hit and run involving a pedestrian in the area of blossom hill road and snow avenue. police say a woman was hit around 7.20 friday night while crossing the street outside of a crosswalk. she suffered life-threatening injuries. police say they don't have a description of the car at this point, but we are working to get one from them. and breaking news this morning out of san jose. police are on the scene of a stabbing incident. this happened on the key road just a few blocks from highway 101. we know that one man was stabbed. we are working to learn more about his condition at this time. we have reached

out to police for more information and we'll bring that to you as soon as that comes into our newsroom. and now to that puzzling story of a car found buried on the grounds of a 15 million dollar mansion in atherton. investigators now trying to figure out exactly why that mercedes benz was there. and if any other crimes were committed, police say landscapers reported finding the barrett sports car while working at the home thursday morning. kron four's dan thorn has the latest on the investigation. >> the mystery at atherton mansion continues as police carefully dig out a stolen mercedes benz found buried in a backyard. we still don't know what kind of investigation were conducting. we don't know if this is going to be a criminal investigation or if this will be a non-criminal investigation. investigators say the car was buried in the 1990's and was reported stolen by palo alto police in september of 1992. the current homeowners did not own the home at the time. >> but police say a previous

owner with a nefarious past named john liu may provide clues beyond the grave. the still mister liu, all who lived in that house for some years. and after 10 had checkered history, he's no longer alive but had a checkered history of actually being convicted back in the late 60's early 70's. >> a murder. >> that conviction was later overturned. information is still scarce about why the sports car was buried. 45 feet underground at a home on stockbridge avenue at the scene. cadaver canines have so far been unable to locate any human remains. the dogs have only given what investigators are calling a slight reaction, which can be a number of things or nothing. it could be human remains. they could be reacting to blood. they could be reacting to >> bones. they could be acting to human fama. it could be any one of those combinations of things that the dogs are reacting to. >> neighbors of the home tell us they are puzzled by this discovery. and that is the creepiest reporting in

atherton. dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> and records show 3 families have owned that house since it was built in 1990. but as dan mentioned, johnny luu, the man who owned the home in 1994. had a criminal history in 1999, lewis accused of plotting to sink his 1 million dollar yacht in the san francisco bay so that he could collect insurance money. police say he paid off some people to sink the boat. just be on the golden gate bridge. and it turns out the people he hired were undercover agents, but his rap sheet goes back even further in 1966, jurors convict in lieu of murder in los angeles. he served just 3 years of that and then a little more than a decade later, he spent another 3 years in prison for attempted murder. the san mateo county district attorney says liu passed away in 2015 to be clear at the police have not said if there's any connection between %he 2 and the berry car. as for the family who lives at the mansion now, they are not currently considered

suspects in the case because police determined the car was buried before they moved in the investigation does continue this morning. and new today, san mateo county sheriff's deputies are investigating a burglary and assault that happened in san carlos. it happened just after 8 last night on the lindy drive, which is east of interstate 80 deputies say a man broke into a home and was confronted by the person who lived there. that's when the burglar threatened and hit the victim. the burglar then rent out of the house and got in a car with a where a driver was waiting and then they took off. police searched the area but could not find a suspect. we will update you as soon as there's any word of a potential arrest. and starting today pg and e plans to shut off power for a couple 100 customers in the north bay. the move coming amid elevated concerns over fire danger this weekend. as dave mentioned at the top of the show and these shut offs to start today and month through monday, mostly affecting people in lake and

>> it's gorgeous perspective from our mount tam camera this morning, looking into looking over the bay, you can see the bridge out there in the background. slight breeze seems to be moving that camera, though. and we are right. that does make sending to nervous. data is saying may the cameras won >> mean, we expecting those winds to pick up a later in the day? are what you're witnessing there is on shore. that's it that's the good thing. but they're going to flip off shore because when we get these fronts, typically the name of the game is you get rain and then we'd offshore wind. who cares? it's already moisten up the ground. unfortunately, as we well know, we haven't had a lot of rain with the systems that have changed on this offshore wind event. is going to be bringing a saw much drier air. we do to some here. okay. okay. we have we have cloudy skies right now. this was left

over the fog. i don't think we'll see much the way of fog tomorrow because, boy, 2 things really change in about 12 hours or so. this is only statement we have right now. solano county, sacramento and central valley's fire weather watch at this point, which is a post it note to say, ok, red flag warning and expect to hear about that as early as tonight. probably this again, sunday, noon to 08:00pm. but after you get that thrust of dry air, the drier atmosphere lingers a little bit. so we need the marine layer to chip away at it, which it looks like such success of systems will do going forward. 60's on the board, lower 60's at that. 56 san francisco got 53 at the santa rosa. by the way, 59 for san jose. so lot of uniformity with temperatures in all. here's the scattered cloud cover as we go for today. so a pretty decent day, but want to bundle up a little bit because that will be a cool onshore wind working here, fuel stray showers at work far east. that kind of clears out again as the front is over us here comes those offshore winds, very dry. we don't have the consolation of a rain event

they're ago. that creates are typical problem of these red flag warnings which we have up in solano county. but the safety power shut-offs you been hearing about for lake in sonoma county. so on shore for right now, there's the switch happening late tonight. then due north, as you can see through solano county, napa, sonoma county and also covering a good chunk of the east bay as well. how about the moisture levels behind all of that? here are the humidity levels drying out this afternoon. recovery tonight that's that's pretty pumped there. you can see not really good. so we don't have a lot of that marine layer coming back tomorrow morning, drive by the afternoon bone dry, in fact, in the east bay and up to the north bay and even monday, the recovery is even more modest. so again, this takes time for the atmosphere to recover from this dry spell in terms of that air mass, early fog clouds and all that business afternoon, clearing mild inland highs of about 70. again, kind of a note there on shore winds to watch out for offshore tomorrow, dry and mild inland in the 70's 60's

and parts of the bay. and i mean highs at that, too. so this is kind of a cool dry going on here the next week. we start off sunny with some variable clouds each day say wednesday, thursday, friday. and there might be a couple little stray showers. we can use that to moisten up the lower levels of the atmosphere. so anything we get to not help your garden. but i mean, it's nice to help moisten up the ground. 67 san francisco, 70 going on for oakland. 68 san jose. the water real estate lower 60's up to the north bay. also off to the east bay, too, with some 70's along the east bay shoreline will get a 4 zone forecast coming up in a bit. stephanie, thanks very much. days. >> in the east bay, brooklyn, police are investigating another shooting that happened during an attempted catalytic converter theft. it happened just thursday morning at the fairview and king streets roundabout not far from the ashby bart station, according to police, a neighbor yelled at a person they believe was trying to steal a converter from a parked car. that's when a different person fired a shot towards the witnesses. house. no one was injured in

this case. oakland police are warning about a rise in thefts of power tools. police say most incidents have been in the oakland hills between 09:00am and 02:00pm. police say that typically 2 to 4 armed people are confronting people with tools who might have tools, rather and they're stealing those tools driving off. police advise you to engrave your name or your company name with your phone number on your tools. any tolls kept outside should be locked up with chains and padlocks or attached to a tracking device. for your money. president biden's student loan forgiveness program could be in jeopardy after a federal appeals court temporarily halted the program. kron four's justine waldman has more on the court's decision and what this means for people applying for relief. the student loan forgiveness, application page still active but getting money back is on hold. >> a federal appeals court issued an administrative stay temporarily blocking president

joe biden's plan to cancel billions of dollars in federal student loans. the white house press secretary tweeted this. the ruling does not prevent people from applying for student debt relief, nor does it stop the federal government from reviewing the applications. the administration just cannot distribute relief until the court makes a ruling. republicans have sharply criticized the program for being too expensive. the congressional budget office estimates the program will cost about 400 billion dollars over the next 3 decades. i wouldn't call it forgiveness because you're not getting anything. you're just shifting it over to taxpayers. the biden administration officially launched the program on monday. federal courts dismissed 2 republican led challenge is to the program on thursday before friday's court ruling. the president criticized republicans for putting the relief for millions in limbo. their outrage is wrong and it's super critical. the white house says this plan will help some 43 million people pay off some of their student loan debt.

most cases if a less than $6 for a gallon of regular, according to triple a the state average is now 5.79 a gallon san francisco county is the only one in the bay area where residents will pay an average of $6. napa and san mateo counties pretty close behind alameda santa clara and contra costa counties all paying around 5.80, solano county comes in with the lowest rate at 5.66. a gallon, which is about $0.6 lower than yesterday. overall, gas prices are nearly half a dollar lower than where they were this time last week. but we are still just a little bit higher about $0.50 higher. then a month ago. san jose residents are paying more on their monthly bills and any other major city in the country. that's according to a report by doxo insights. researchers looked at mortgages, rent, utilities, car loan, cell phone bills, and that report show the average san jose resident is

state football player hit and killed by a school bus. we now know his identity 18 year-old camden right? the university tells us make right died in the crash friday morning. just a few blocks away from the university. chp says nick wright was riding his scooter north on 10th street when he was hit by a school san jose unified school district bus carrying 14 students. chp says none of the students on the bus were hurt. and this tragic news coming just one day before the san jose state football team was set to play against new mexico state. that travel to new mexico, the san jose spartans gathered at the scene of the crash to set up a memorial for camden make right and shared their love for their team mate. >> i love so much. everything he's done. everything you need to for this program. he means the world to everybody. >> we bring healing upon his family. his friends. as loved ones and whatever else he touched the blood. like

news. >> and records show that 3 families have owned that home since it was built in 1990. and as dan mentioned, johnny luu, the man who owned the home in 1994. he also had a criminal history in 1999. was accused of plotting to sink his 1 million dollars yacht in the san francisco bay so that he could inch collect insurance money. police say he pay off some people to sink the boat. just be on the golden gate bridge. turns out the people he hired were undercover agents, but his rap sheet goes back even further in 1966, jurors convicted lieu of murder in los angeles and he served about 3 years of that. and then more than a decade later, he spent another 3 years in prison for attempted murder. the san mateo county district attorney says that lou died in 2015 and to be clear, atherton police have not said if there's any connection between the eu and the berry car. and as for the family who lives at the mansion now, they are not currently considered suspects in the case because police determined the car was buried

before they moved in. new this morning, san mateo county sheriff's deputies are investigating a burglary and assault that happened in san carlos. this happened just after 08:00pm last night on the lindy drive, which is east of i-280, deputies say a man broke into a home and was confronted by the person who lived there. that's when the burglar threatened and hit the victim. they then ran out of the house and got in a car where a getaway driver was waiting. then those suspects took off. police searched the area but could not find them. but we will update you with any new details once an investigation. once we more information from that investigation starting today, pg any plans to shut off power for a couple 100 customers in the north bay. the move comes amid elevated concerns over fire danger this weekend. the start start today and runs through monday. mostly affecting people in lake and napa counties. some customers in sonoma county will also be affected. pg e will alert

thefts. and police are advising people living in the area to engrave their name and phone number on their tools. any tools kept outside should be locked up or have a tracking device attached. for your money. president biden's student loan forgiveness program could be in jeopardy after a federal appeals court temporarily halted the program. kron four's justine waldman has more on the court's decision and what this means for people applying for relief. the student loan forgiveness, application page still active but getting money back is on hold. >> a federal appeals court issued an administrative stay temporarily blocking president joe biden's plan to cancel billions of dollars in federal student loans. the white house press secretary tweeted this. the ruling does not prevent people from applying for student debt relief, nor does it stop the federal government from reviewing the applications. the administration just cannot distribute relief until the court makes a ruling.

was laying off 20% of its staff. a snap has several other bay area offices, including one and palo alto and developing news this morning, the widow of a former usc football player is suing the ncaa after she says they failed to protect her husband from repetitive head trauma. the lawsuit claims matthew guy died in 2018 from permanent brain damage caused by numerous blows to the head while playing football. but lawyers for the ncaa blamed these death on heavy drinking drugs and other health problems. experts say this case could have big implications for similar cases going forward. >> i think that this is going to have a lot of eyeballs on it because in the legal community, especially with regard to professional and amateur sports, a jury trial verdict, verdict against the ncaa or against the nfl after a jury trial will be used by every other plaintiffs attorney in the country. we've had a lot of settlements,

5 million dollars to 2 men sexually abused by an elementary school teacher joseph, who was sentenced to 35 years in prison last november for molesting 8. former students at blossom hill elementary, one victim was abused in early 2020 and will get a settlement of $900,000. another victim was abused between 2008 2009 and will get 4.2 million dollars. new this morning in the east bay, the alameda county sheriff's office seized 10,000 fentanyl pills from a house in hayward. deputies say the fentanyl was disguised as oxy-contin. they also found 12 pounds of powdered fentanyl. the drugs were on their way to oregon. police say. detectives seized over 72 pounds of meth from a santa rosa home officials arrested. 28 year-old jose sanchez and his house on u.s. court near this super china's market. they found 2 handguns. sanchez was charged with possession of controlled substances and

dispensary has been targeted 2 other times this year. and right now you're watching video of a break-in at ivy hill that happened 2 months ago and the owner says that they think every break in has been done by the same group of thieves. in the sausalito city council will consider a move to put power lines underground. this part of a pg any upgrade planned in the city? the 60 million dollar project would affect nearly 700 properties in the city between glen drive and marion avenue as demand for electricity increase, this new option will be added on top of the default upgrade from pg and e which would replace overhead lies and facilities, but significant additional funds would be needed for this project. so the city council will see a presentation on this proposal at this upcoming tuesday's meeting. and taxpayers may see some relief coming next year. inflation has triggered the largest adjustment to the irs standard tax deduction since 1985. duncan maclean has details.

>> major changes to tax brackets coming for next year. as inflation continues to affect people all over the world. now automatic annual adjustments to the irs says tax brackets hoping to dull the impact here in the united states some years ago decided that the wood index, these brackets. >> based upon inflationary trends. so i think that people will see some relief next year with their tax filings. so here's the numbers. >> first changes to the standard deduction used by 85% of filers the deduction for married couples up by $1800 for single filers and increase of $900 and for heads of households, $1400. but that's not all big adjustments for tax brackets. these are the new threshold for joint filers 12% owed for incomes over 22,000 and 22% for any income. more than 89,000 for individuals, similar changes. 24 1% kicking in around $95,000 to make the top tax bracket. you have to take home

brings with it really cold air. but it's dry. and that's what we're really concerned about coming in from the wrong direction. winds here they are on shore. you can see most of the day flipping now out of the northwest. so so that sweater on, even though the sun's out and get a decent amount of sunshine today, there's a nice pocket there. some strong offshore winds. you can see that really pop on sunday morning into the afternoon. that's why this level county statement was in there the fire weather watch going on from noon until 8 tomorrow. again, that's all the coverage area. we have the bay area right now. but the power safety shut offs will happen up there to napa as well. here's what happens on future cast for going forward for the moisture levels. little dry this afternoon shore. here's the recovered tomorrow morning. that's week. but we've seen better. and then we get to the afternoon bone dry east bay up to the north bay. this is where the concern is and we're banking off of this dry atmosphere even when everything is done by monday morning. what will happen is that marine layer will start chipping away at that. and this is opening up
