looks like quickly in stormtracker 4 still kind of the same scenario. >> of the leftover moisture down to the south of us. not really an impactful event for us. san jose san jose state checking in with the couple are first rays of light this morning as you will notice there off towards the distance brought to you by the middle of 2 apartment there. 34 this morning for any oct. 31 for livermore, the freezing mark for concord. but up to the north bay, some readings a little cooler. 38 going on for delay, about. oh, i saw that jump. 28. 28 also santa rosa and 40 for san francisco. a little chillier this morning that we saw this time from yesterday. but you can see a little bit more mild on the peninsula. a little cooler off towards the east bay. the winds, they're still a little bit offshore. that means the dry air being reinforced. that's one of the elements to keep the temperatures down. now today, lots of sunshine, a little bit of a breeze in the afternoon. no biggie. but the issue is that temperatures may actually be a little cooler than they were yesterday with cooler air aloft, but at least right coming up, we'll have a bit more details on what lies

ahead beyond the weekend as well, stephanie. all right. thanks very much. days. >> well, did you feel it? a 3.6 magnitude earthquake shook the east bay hitting the city of elsa rio at around 3.40, this morning. kron four's camila barco is live for us with more camila. i know that you felt in san francisco this morning. what do we know about the situation at an er >> well, i definitely felt it. i happening in the middle of the night, especially if you are sleeping, it woke you up. a definitely woke me up. and i know woke up as well. and i'm actually hearing from people here in orinda that it woke them up as well. take a look at where it happened. happened just northeast of else or people like i said in several parts of the bay area fell to like in san francisco, rich men. i'm here in orinda. it happened around 3.30, this morning and we're also getting video from viewers also felt

it said their cameras actually captured some of that movement. the originally reports were made that the magnitude of this earthquake was a 4 point. oh, but the united states geological survey is reporting it has a 3.6 magnitude, which is surprising considering how strong it felt. like i said, the air thick with center just northeast of elsa around 3.30, this morning and some people have been telling us this felt like a huge one. viewers have even e-mailed us saying it felt like something dropped in fs in something drops in front like a big truck by. stephanie, we have not heard of any reports of any damage. however, of course, we will be staying up to date on that here behind me. we are our window this morning. we will be talking to hopefully some people here in the area seeing what they felt earlier this morning. like i said, it woke me up and i'm still kind of shaking a little

bit just because of how strong it felt. i'll send it back to you. >> yeah, it certainly was quite a thing to wake up to you. thanks so much, camila for that live report. we're hearing from the mother of 23 month-old jasper. wu. the toddler was hit and killed by a bullet while riding in the back seat of the family's car in november. last year, jasper's mom spoke with kron four's to resist us. you about what this past year has been like. >> just a ruse. mom tells me one of the things she remembers most about her son was how much he loved food. you can see in this video, the young boy devouring some bread. jasper was only 23 months old when he was killed in the back of his parents. suv. the family of 3 was driving home on sunday after visiting a family member in san francisco. but never that expense anything that the shell show spoke with me with oakland community leader carl chan interpret smile. they want people to remember that

because gun violence. does he want to see and stop? this kind bombings. >> theresa kron, 4 news. >> now, here's a breakdown of the timeline leading to the arrests that we know. >> the chp says investigators had some suspects in mind shortly after the shooting. >> waiting until this week to make the arrests. adding the alameda county da's office wanted enough evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. authorities say the gunfire happened between rival san francisco gang members, trevor green, ivory bivins in johnny jackson. police arrested all 3 in charge them with murder. we've also learned just 15 minutes before that deadly shooting, jack. suddenly we're driving away from a home in oakland with bivens following them closely. court documents describe ivins is pushing up on the 2 as they drove. jackson also confirmed his involvement in the case the day of the shooting a day

after the shooting november 7th. the second suspect, trevor green flew to atlanta in march. she returned and was arrested at sfo on a warrant for a separate shooting. he and ivory bivins committed in concord a few days later, but it was arrested on the same warrant. a 4th suspect who was in one of the 2 cars was killed in another gang-related shooting. former ghost ship master tenant derick will not spend any more time in jail for having weapons in his home. a man was originally convicted of involuntary manslaughter because of the ghost ship fire that killed 36 people 6 years ago this month he took a plea deal that allowed him to avoid prison and serve home detention, followed by 3 years of probation. prosecutors say during a search of his lake county home earlier this year, they found a machete, bows and arrows and ammunition. a judge ruled today possessing these weapons did not violate the terms of all men as plea deal.

expect to see an average increase of around $50 a month. the utility says that could be the case from now until march putin. part of the blame on what they're calling a short supply of natural gas pg. and e says the company expects energy bills will be about 18% higher each month compared to this time last year because of colder temperatures, higher demand and tighter supply. but one california organizations as pg and e could be doing more to lower our monthly bills. >> you're talking about people having to choose between heating their home. >> groceries by prescription clothes, for their children. to many things on the monthly bills that repair should not be paying. we're paying way too much for shareholder >> pg and e has a few suggestions to help you lower your bills. this winter. you can clear any objects away from heating vents. use the cool setting on your washing

in the east bay. we have some lower 30's at work here and hawks popping a 37 east bay shoreline. they're dipping into the 30's as well. 38 report this hour for san jose. and 38 in vallejo. so kind of a cold start. this is not that much colder than yesterday was. and that's part of the reason why there weren't any statements and some patchy frost is possible with all of this as well. so breaking it down what you can expect. your we've got sunny, but it will be chilly. that means in the afternoon too. hi to lower highs will be in the lower to middle 50's going on and it will actually be cooler inland in the east bay that it will be along the east bay shoreline. we get into early next week. some scattered clouds, few showers possible on tuesday. this is looking slightly better did be from before more than just a little cosmetic sprinkle or so an action could scrounge up a couple little showers, maybe on that. then later in the week here. so trying to get to late week and should say variable clouds warmer. a few showers friday. kind of question mark and all of that again, watching waves coming by again, that looks a little better. so the models are kind

of going our direction a bit in the following week. looks like there's more traffic to make note up. the winds not very active, but notice the arrows are pointing from the northeast from the north. that means we're getting that dry air reinforced cold air aloft, all of that. so we're not going to move much temperature wise in the air will be dry to let this overnight lows be quite chilly. we have the clear skies both today tonight. and through your sunday for the most part. but once we put sunday to bed and get to sunday night, the development here a little bit more. the way of scattered clouds that will greet us for your monday. and all this forecast today. 56, sunny and cool. 57 oakland, 59 for san jose. but notice the pattern of these temperatures a little bit more mild on the east bay shoreline drops off over the east bay hills to the lower to middle 50's maybe popping about 60 or so for santa rosa. next couple of days. again, noting that cloud cover to build up by here on a monday. temperatures fall just a touch showers into next week or so 4 zone forecast to get more. the

weeds in your longer-range 70. all right. thanks very much, dave. >> happening right now, the chp is increasing enforcement across bay area roadways as more holiday travel gets underway. they say they expect to see some more dui checkpoints when you're out on the roads and a reminder over thanksgiving weekend, the chp made more than 1000 arrests for impaired driving. many people are flying the friendly skies this holiday season. so much that air travel is expected to reach near pre-pandemic levels through the end of the holiday season. now here's a look at oakland international airport. there it is right there. the airport says that they are expecting more than 670,000 passengers from now through the day after new year's. that's a 10% increase from the same period last year. but with the number, the higher number of travelers comes concerns about respiratory virus is spreading like covid rsv and the flu. some travelers tell us that they're taking steps to be careful.

>> i wear a mask the whole time inside the airport. so it's still annoying. it's good for covid and also just for getting not getting colds and things like that, too. >> masking at the airport and on planes is not required but is recommended. meantime, oakland airport suggests showing up at least 2 hours early for flights in case there are any delays. with the new year comes a new workplace rule and the end of legislation that gives workers with that gives workers with covid-19 guaranteed sick pay kron four's. dan kerman explains. >> in september, the governor signed legislation extending supplemental paid sick leave allowing workers to access an additional bucket of sick leave. if they got covid-19. but despite covid cases rising that law and sun december 31st with no new legislation in sight, also ending in early january is a cal osha regulation requiring employers to pay employees who can't

work because they caught covid-19 on the job cost has really been extreme, especially for small businesses like restaurants, which really struggles coming out of the pandemic. >> advocates for businesses say now is definitely the time for these emergency measures to end. >> and they point out sick workers still have other types of leave. >> to those who are concerned about being forced to go to work. 4 cases caught in the workplace. workers compensation will continue to cover that. so this isn't a situation where everything is disappearing, hurt everybody because it's a public health benefit to have infectious workers. >> stay home. but advocates for workers say for some regular sick leave amounts to only 3 days a year and they fear faced with losing a paycheck, infected workers will stay on the job. they're going to come to work sick. they're going to and in fact, there the customers co-workers. it's that for the business and that for the economy. should the current covid-19 surge be worse than

expected and extend into the new year? there's always the possibility state legislators could once again past covid-19 sick leave legislation. dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> starbucks workers went on strike friday at san francisco's castro district store. joining more than 1000 or east as at 100 stores nationwide participating in demonstrations. that's according to starbucks workers united the labor group organizing this effort. the strike last 3 days, the longest in the unionization campaign. >> but this is about is having the way companies to be able to speak up for bargained what we pay >> protesters say they are demanding better staff, a more predictable scheduling and livable wage. among other things. starbucks which opposes the unionization effort, says the strike will have limited impact on its stores. starbucks and the union have started contract talks in about 50 stores. no

agreements have been reached yet. the journalist who recently got their twitter account suspended are back on the social media platform. elon musk announcing he will lift the suspensions of journalists. he's accusing of revealing the location of his private jet. he made the move based on another public poll on twitter, the list of reinstated accounts include journalists srom the new york times washington post and cnn musk accused the reporters of sharing his private information without his consent. those journalists say they never posted anything that was not already public information. >> elon musk is worry about being docks. twin, and trans and women and people of color have had the same fate on twitter and other platforms. this is an unbalanced equation and we need to fix that. >> musk has put out a poll asking our as you as we just mentioned earlier, must put out a poll asking users about whether he should and suspend accounts. now earn a week. so

>> in the north bay, the city of fairfield announced some sad news sharing mayor harry price passed away wednesday morning. price was on track to complete his 4th term in office. he'd been mayor of fairfield since 2005 and previously served on various roles in city government. he also taught english abandoned high school for 33 years. a cause of death has not been released. still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news driving down. the embarcadero could be a thing of the past. >> why one group wants to make >> why one group wants to make that area car free.

we have temperatures in the lower 30's right now, tri valley, pretty much around freezing with those upper 30's working their magic along the east bay shoreline. 40 coming in for san francisco. 38 san jose. give you quick contrast here trailing by a couple degrees there off to the east bay. but elsewhere, numbers are popping a little bit more mild this morning. then yesterday, the winds loyally out of the offshore direction continuing in today. so that means more dry air at the surface and the breakdown for you today about 48 11 by 2 will do about 53. again. some inland spots will be a little colder than around the bay. we'll take a look at what you can expect for your whole weekend and also into next week with a couple opportunities for showers. stephanie, thanks very much. dave. >> in the south bay, police in los altos are reminding holiday shoppers to be extra careful when you're out. and about this weekend after officers responded to a string of car break-ins and thefts across the city this week. police say multiple cars were broken into throughout the los altos area starting tuesday

night on el camino reale at a restaurant parking lot. 5 cars were broken into there. thieves took electronics. then again on wednesday night. police say around the same time several cars were broken into across several business districts in los altos. police are asking you to take your electronics. don't leave anything in your cars. you could hide items in your trunk. just be mindful. it is the holiday season and unfortunately, this is the time where people will experience an increase in these types of crimes. in san francisco. how does a car free embarcadero sound? well, that's what one organization is hoping to see. organizers want the city's waterfront to be closed to car traffic kron four's gayle ong explains. >> there are about their cities around the world that have done this it could be such a destination instead of just a thoroughfare here and occurs, hoping the embarcadero waterfront will one day be car free, similar to big cities

guy, michelangelo, the 70 year-old african tortoise was stabbed its shell by one jorge rodas who police say also stole thousands of dollars from of items from play and learn preschool in january of last year, a judge sentenced the man to 2 years of probation and mandatory mental health and substance abuse treatment. he's also banned from having any animals for 10 years. san francisco police say they've made dozens of arrests in an effort to curb retail theft last month the department launched a retail abatement operation that's resulted in at least 60 arrests. undercover officers are being posted at clothing stores, grocery stores and pharmacies. san francisco restaurant john's grill has settled a lawsuit in a rare victory as a result, their insurance will cover business losses that happened during covid lockdowns of these types of claims have been routinely denied in courts because the losses incurred by the many of

insurance companies say we're not physical. the restaurant owner says they will give part of the winnings. what part of the settlement money to their workers and donate some of it to city college. culinary school. >> go directly to everybody that was during the shutdown about 2 years this will go directly to everybody that worked at john's grill and works jonesborough. >> john's girl has been on market street for 114 years. the terms of the settlement were not disclosed. but the restaurant's attorney said the payout is substantial. in the east bay, oakland, vice mayor rebecca kaplan has been fined $19,000 after failing to report her part ownership in a condominium in the city. that's according to public ethics commissioners who voted to impose these fines.

officials say kaplan did not report her ownership of the condo until 2019, which was after she and her parents had purchased it in december 2013 officials add kaplan also voted as a city council member on a project that may have increased the value of her property. officials say kaplan did admit to wrongdoing but said it was all accidental. the effort to launch a recount in the oakland mayoral race between council members how and lauren taylor may be over before any votes get recounted. that's because of the cost estimated to be $100,000. the oakland naacp says they want alameda county to pay for the recount, but according to state election code, the voter's requesting the recount must fund that earlier this week, the naacp called for the recount. the organization say they are concerned that close to 20,000 votes were disqualified for various reasons which they say include ballots being filled out incorrectly. in national

news after narrowly avoiding a government shutdown. congress is working out the details of a long time spending bill that bill is expected to include other another round of military aid for ukraine. some republicans want to wait until january to pass the budget since the gop retakes the house in the new year. but democrats say congress needs to pass that budget soon. >> but he's going to get everything they want. but the final product will include winds. everyone can get behind. >> if a deal cannot be reached, then it's possible. a second short term extension would be needed. the total cost of the long-term bill is expected to be around 1.7 trillion dollars. coming up here on the kron, 4 morning news state farm faces a lawsuit. >> a number of policymakers accusing the company of discrimination. details next.

to a few people here and they tell me they as well were woken up by my apartment schuck in the middle of the night time and i'm not going to lie. i'm still shaking a little bit because as a florida girl, i'm not used to any of this out. going to take a look at it was sent. this earthquake was centered around the was just northeast of else or that's just between richmond and berkeley. but it could be felt felt throughout the bay area. we've been hearing people felt belted in san francisco, walnut creek pinole and here in arendelle, one viewer even sent us this video from inside their home. the video shows a christmas tree shaking a dresser and kitchen appliances. also moving while the earthquake was happening, viewers have also emailed us describing this earthquake has huge. they say it felt like someone dropped something in their front yard. we're like a big truck was rolling by now. originally reports were made that the magnitude of this earthquake was a 4 point. oh,

however, the united states geological survey reported as a 3.6 magnitude earthquake, which is surprising considering how strong it felt. and stephanie, and like i said, we're here in orinda this morning. we've been talking to people. we did speak to one person who says that they slept through this earthquake. however, we have gone on twitter and we have heard from other people who say that this is woke them up in the middle of the night. it was around 3.30, this morning when it could be felt. but i also want you to hear from one person who felt this earthquake here in orinda. >> did you feel the earthquake? from seattle. what it used to >> well, so we are in bay area country now. so we've got the forty-niners in the warriors and earthquakes weaving of that. she never talking. she's a little rattled. strong long. yeah, i woke me up, rattled my wife now my baby girl. got

fight happened between rival san francisco gang members, trevor green, ivory bivins and johnny jackson. police arrested all 3 and charged them with murder. we've also just learned that 15 minutes before that deadly shooting, jack, suddenly we're driving away from a home in oakland with ivins following them closely. court documents describe bivin says pushing up on the 2 as they drove jackson. one of the suspects also confirmed his involvement in the case on the day of the shooting. the a day after the shooting, november 7th, the second suspect river green flew to atlanta in march. he returned and was arrested at sfo on a warrant for a separate shooting. he and ivory bivins committed in concord a few days later, bivens was arrested on the same warrant. a 4th suspect who was in one of the 2 cars was killed in another gang-related shooting. coming up here on the kron 4 morning news tis the season to travel. what you can expect at your local airport. and after the break, dropping temperatures

checking into a sweet morning, although it is a bit on the cold side. granted, here's sfo going on here for you. no delays this morning with all of that. meanwhile, here's the game what we expect for the day. and in fact, the weekend and week ahead, first, things first for the weekend, sunny but chilly. that means in the afternoon high temperatures will be in the mid to maybe even upper 50's along the east bay shoreline but lower 50's as you get inland there a bit early in the week, scattered clouds start to work after the weekend. tuesday's a chance we always talked about as a little stray shower might be working here. it's looking a little bit more positive. we might get something more substantive and that's starting to favor a little bit tuesday night, too. then late in the week. another opportunity here is for a few showers on friday in a little minor. warm up starts to happen. as we finish off week, we bump those temperatures into the lower 60's after next weekend1 there is yet a new wave of opportunities as we get into the following week will be having another long-range forecast. 27 santa rosa matching that for novato inland. here. you have still hang in the freezing mark here for livermore concord. 31 40

respiratory virus is spreading like covid rsv and the flu. some travelers tell us they are taking steps to be careful. >> i wear a mask the whole time inside the airport. so it's still annoying. it's good for covid and also just for getting not getting colds and things like that, too. >> masking at the airport and on planes is not required, but is recommended. meantime, oakland airport suggest showing up at least 2 hours early for flights in case there are any delays. and with the new year comes a new workplace rule at the end of legislation that gives workers infected with covid-19 guaranteed sick pay kron four's. dan kerman explains. >> in september, the governor signed legislation extending supplemental paid sick leave allowing workers to access an additional bucket of sick leave. if they got covid-19. but despite covid cases rising that law and sun december 31st with no new legislation in sight, also ending in early january is a cal osha

good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. lots of sunshine from beginning to end. we're looking at today, maybe little bit the way some high cloudiness try to sneak on in here. but check out the blue skies off to the distance blue bay. >> in the east bay shoreline lit up nicely a little bit in the way of some early patches of frost. you might felt out there in some of the inland areas. 27 santa rosa with 30 in the bottle with this hour inland. we're still look at some stubborn numbers of 31 conquered. 32 for livermore, east bay shoreline. also looking at some 30's to 40 for oakland. and 44 antioch, contrast, temperatures were trailing a couple degrees in a couple spots. but on balance, we kind of caught up a little bit from this time yesterday with those calm winds but dry air and that will be the case all the way through the rest of the weekend. it's really early next week. we'll see a change. 51 at high noon to 3 o'clock. we're talking 52 now. temperatures inland. we're going to be a little bit cooler than they will be near the bay due to the fact that this drier air, even though we have lots of sunshine going on and there is upstream, a couple opportunities to see.

some showers will investigate all of that stuff. thanks very much, dave. >> in the south bay, police in los are reminding holiday shoppers to be extra careful, went out and about this weekend after officers responded to a string of car break-ins and thefts across the city this week. police say multiple cars were broken into throughout the los altos area starting tuesday night on el camino, real in a restaurant parking lot. 5 cars were broken into and we know that thieves took electronics. then again on wednesday night. police say around the same time several cars were also broken into across several business districts in la south coast. police are asking you to remember to take your electronics out of your car. do not leave them in your vehicles. you could try to hide them in your trunk. just be mindful. it is the holiday season. and unfortunately that's the time where there can be an increase in these types of crimes. police say. in san francisco, a car free embarcadero. well, that's what one organization is hoping to see. organizers say that they want the city's waterfront to

know, tell us a bit about your organization and the work that you do in general to help the homeless. >> yeah. downtown streets team strives to end homelessness through the dignity of work in the power of community. we have 20 locations across northern and central california that were on one of our 2 program models in our volunteer program. individuals experiencing homelessness are at risk of homelessness. volunteer to do community beautification projects. i mean, as a volunteer or a team members, we call them they receive extensive case management support, employment, coaching in basic needs assistance. and then we have a paid employment model called streets. team enterprises. we're for folks are able to earn a living wage at entry level positions in a variety of work for sectors while receiving the care and case management, the downtown streets teams offers and able to see that by offering wages and supportive care, individuals are moving into self-sufficiency more successfully. well, and tell us a bit about the success rate of the program. yeah, you know, i would love to talk about one of my team members

turning this tunica. we met her at the end of 2021. she was experiencing homelessness living in a car and struggling with addiction. and after a couple of months in our program, she e rned her way up into a green shirt or a team leader. she was seen as a role model looks to peers arriving the ship's early to get things set up in just a few months after that after maintaining sobriety, she graduated into downtown streets. teams, streets, team enterprises program here in san francisco. she became certified as a custodian. a man has just obtained full-time housing, full-time employment. she's got custody of her son she's working in the union really excited for her as a truly a success story there. and >> what you really offer it sounds like is this pipeline this opportunity for the unhoused to help them get back on their feet and put them into a position where they can go out into the workforce and you know, paying job. absolutely well and tell us a bit about the situation facing the homeless, especially given that is it is the holiday season. thank you for asking. it's really difficult time. is

it so cold out and the number of shelter beds across northern california is always at a scarcity. >> we do as much as we can to work on referrals and lean on networks to ensure that the people that were supporting have access to a safe, dry place during the winter seasons. we do. holiday fundraisers were able to provide warming kits, offer things like wool socks, beanies, jackets, blankets doing as much as we can to support folks from the school times. you know that i what specific programs have you offered to the homeless this holiday season? i know that there was a thanksgiving dinner that you guys recently put on. >> yeah, i'm actually really for the first time since before the covid pandemic we're having and of the year celebration where all of downtown street seems communities can come together will be going to the glass house in san jose and all of the communities that i'm in in the east bay, like berkeley hayward and oakland are taking a charter bus to get there. folks. we taking caltrans and bart, they'll be end of the year celebration awards, food and they get to mingle with each other. it's going to be really great celebration and

suddenly we're driving away from a home in oakland with ivins following them closely. court documents describe ivins as pushing up on the 2 as they drove. jackson also confirmed his involvement in the case the day of that shooting a day after the shooting november 7th, a second suspect. trevor green flew to atlanta in march. she returned and was arrested at sfo on a warrant for a separate shooting. he and ivory bivins committed in concord a few days later, bivens was arrested on the same warrant. a 4th suspect who was in one of the 2 cars was killed in another gang-related shooting. a former ghosted master tenant derick almena will not spend more time in jail for having weapons in his home meadow was originally convicted of involuntary manslaughter because of the go ship fire that killed 36 people 6 years ago this month he took a plea deal that allowed him to avoid prison and serve home detention, followed by 3 years of probation. prosecutors say during a search of his lake county home earlier this year, they found a machete, bows and

of elsa that's just between richmond and berkeley. but it could be felt throughout the bay area working people felt it in san francisco, walnut creek pinole and of course, here in a one viewer sent us this video from inside their home. the video shows a christmas tree shaking address or a kitchen appliances. also moving while the earthquake was happening, viewers have e-mailed just describing this one has huge. they say it felt like someone dropped something in their front yard or it felt like a big truck was rolling by. originally reports were made that the magnitude of this earthquake was a 4 point. oh, however, the u.s. geological survey reported it has a 3.6 magnitude, which is surprising considering how strong it felt throughout the morning. we've been talking to people here in orinda about what it was like for them. here's what one resident had to say. >> it was a little bit of a so high. >> we've got well. and has been and i just felt like that. >> you know, just like literally like somebody just move the house just like this.

lee from the api community group, deer community. >> thanks so much for being here with us this morning. ladies, thanks for having us. all right. so tell us a bit about the light fest. what can people expect? >> so actually more than 150 small businesses signed up. and at first we just wanted to start a little holiday lane in chinatown, sons. we always strive to the suburbs to check out the lights and we thought how fun would it be to have a little thing then in our neighborhood to celebrate christmas? christmases voice. we always leave china town behind for christmas and i'm surprised we thought we just have 20 merchan sign up and surprisingly, more than 150 merchants reached out that they want holiday lights for there. when that's lovely. yeah. and so we storefronts from stockton to grand avenue to jackson, to washington street so they can really expect to tune feel the

holidays. and amy, you play quite a role in making sure that all these businesses over 100 businesses were decorated for the holiday tell us a bit about what that process was like >> yeah, so i am part a new grassroots organization caught your community. and we started last during the pandemic to organize focus possible of ads to help the during the pandemic am. and we've had over 70 dinner so far chinatown, of which i almost all the restaurants are still open past 7, nicholas, quite for the holiday life s was to - mobilize the younger generation to be more involved in this that so thank you so much. association had temperatures association for allowing us to being the younger generation back and help set up these lights. could walk us to like the reaction from business owners just seeing that? >> you know, folks from the younger generation coming out to help them really make a celebrate the holiday spirit in chinatown. so i think i think is just the actively

building community. that was the great thing because it's a light that anyone can put up themselves. >> but having actually know if you working with some folks who are a little bit older of the older generation. yeah. >> their happiness of having someone someone new that they can like talk about their style with that. and, you know, i think that was really heartwarming. so it is speaking of the pandemic, right? so many businesses in the chinatown area were affected by this financially, even emotionally, right? like the business. yeah. >> you know, so talk of talk to us a bit about the significance of having this event. i know that some businesses are even holding holiday specials to yeah, i was actually really excited this whole event because it's

no ongoing threat to public safety. in the south bay police in los altos of reminding holiday shoppers to be extra careful when you're out and about this weekend after officers responded to a string of car break-ins and thefts across the city this week. police say multiple cars were broken into throughout the los altos area started tuesday night on el camino reality restaurant parking lot. 5 cars were broken into thieves, took electronics. then again on wednesday night. police say around the same time several cars were broken into across several business districts in los altos. police are asking you to remember to take your electronics out of your car. do not leave them in your vehicles. you could try to hide them in your trunk, but just be mindful. it is the holiday season. and at this time, there can be an increase in these types of crimes. in san francisco, a car free embarcadero. that's what one organization is hoping to see. organizers want the city's waterfront to be closed to car traffic kron four's gayle ong has the details.

for the proposal on this organization's website. francisco police say they've made dozens of arrests in an effort to curb retail theft last month the department launched a retail abatement operation and that's resulted in at least 60 arrest. undercover officers are being posted at clothing stores, grocery stores and pharmacies. a man accused of breaking into a preschool last year and attacking a pet tortoise will not serve any prison time. you may remember michelangelo, this 70 year-old african tortoise was stabbed in its shell by one george road was who police say also stole thousands of dollars of items from play and learn preschool in january of last year, a judge sentenced the man to 2 years of probation and mandatory mental health and substance abuse treatment. he's also banned from having any animals for 10 years. the effort to launch a recount in the oakland mayoral race between council member sharon tal and lauren taylor may be over before any votes get

recounted. that's because of the cost estimated to be $100,000. the oakland naacp says they want alameda county to pay for the recount, but according to the state election, code weather is requesting the recount must fund it earlier this week the naacp called for the recount. the organization is concerned that close to 20,000 votes were disqualified for various reasons which they say include ballots being filled out incorrectly. >> happening right now, the chp is increasing enforcement across bay area roadways as more holiday travel gets underway. >> they say to expect to see more dui checkpoints over thanksgiving weekend. rather they they expect you they ask that you expect to see more dui checkpoints and over thanksgiving weekend, you may recall they made over 1000 arrests for impaired driving. many people are flying the friendly skies this holiday season so much that air travel is expected to reach near

pre-pandemic levels through the end of the holiday season. here's a look at oakland international airport. the airport says it's expecting more than 670,000 passengers from now through the day after new year's. that's a 10% increase from the same period last year. but with a higher number of travelers does come concerns about respiratory virus is spreading like covid rsv and the flu. some travelers tell us they're doing their best to be careful. >> i wear a mask the whole time inside the airport. so it's still annoying. it's good for covid and also just for getting not getting colds and things like that, too. >> masking at the airport and on planes is not required but is recommended. meantime, oakland airport suggest you show up at least 2 hours early for your flight. in case there are any delays. with the new year comes a new workplace rule in the end of legislation that gives workers with covid-19 guaranteed sick pay kron four's. dan kerman explains.

>> in september, the governor signed legislation extending supplemental paid sick leave allowing workers to access an additional bucket of sick leave. if they got covid-19. but despite covid cases rising that law and sun december 31st with no new legislation in sight, also ending in early january is a cal osha regulation requiring employers to pay employees who can't work because they caught covid-19 on the job cost has really been extreme, especially for small businesses like restaurants, which really struggles coming out of the pandemic. >> advocates for businesses say now is definitely the time for these emergency measures to end. >> and they point out sick workers still have other types of leave. >> to those who are concerned of a forced to go to work. 4 cases caught in the workplace. workers compensation will continue to cover that. so this isn't a situation where everything is disappearing to hurt everybody because it's a public health benefit to have infectious workers. >> stay home. but advocates for workers say for some

now are jennifer kazarian, josh rowan hannah ransom with the sfo wag brigade. thank you so much for joining us this morning. i think here it really is so fun to see everybody here. we've got the indiana correct? you and we have alex, the great giant rabbit credible >> so starting off with you, jennifer, or any of you can chime in here. tell us a bit about the program. how you got started. the wiper gate is a partnership between sfo and the san francisco spca animal assisted therapy program. >> we got started back in 2013 the idea for therapy animals in airports actually got started the day after 9.11. 0, yes. it was san jose airport. the airport joplin brought his therapy dog to work the day after 9.11. yes, so we actually were the 3rd airport to start a program and how have things evolved since then? i mean, have you added more animals to the brigade? yes, we have so the most

animals we've had on the work 81 times. 35 the present time we have 13 animals. we have 11 dogs and we one giant rabbit. we have a pig and we also have a cat. ok, very good somewhat of a right our city of and had what's it been like interacting with passengers at the airports, especially, you know, this year we're seeing travel return to those pre pandemic levels. i'm sure it's been busy. it's. >> oh, it's it's actually you know, we've been we're probably one of the newest members to the watergate, but i'm alex it's and also because he's very specially not a united odd necessarily. we get a lot of attention. we lot of people asking about him. so it's it's it's really great and doesn't really help people. so void 18 programs for this piece is and we do a lot of work for them and tell us a bit, too alex, his

personality. what makes him so perfect to interact with customers who might be feeling some anxiety. so yeah, all robinson general, how their own personalities and alex has one of those special personalities that he just loves people. he absolutely adores people in. you know, people at the airport will come down and they sit on the grounds of the crawl right now out and that's just how this who he is. and that's how he does things. so he's got perfect personality just loves people. he just looks so chill. just are watch the crawl run just hannah. tell us a bit about indy. how did you all get him on the program? yeah. i've had indecency was one year old and he's just always been a really calm, sweet, good boy. and he just like alex is a total extrovert. >> he loves meeting people. i think he has a goal of meeting every person in the whole world. so traveling through with him get said definitely gets him some exposure to more people in love and >> we just love spreading that the sharing the joy, especially this time of year. but he certainly brought a lot of smiles faces in our new

studio here this morning. >> and you know, how do people know? you know it? i mean, do you have certain things that the animals where so that there's an invitation there for people to come up and how does that work so that we have that we have the best of put me on we typically have big crowds of people and that typically entice people to look into what's going on and other people in petting them. i'm kind of encourages them to kind of come up and ask but yeah, other complete you can just come up at the dinner. they're they're they're there. they're shutting that thing. all right. and and jennifer, you know, what are the long-term goals of the edge of vision and mine. >> well, the program is continuing to grow. and we hope add as many animals as possible and possibility potentially adding as many teams as we can. however. yeah, it's it. it's a matter of qualifying for the airport as well write. it takes a really special personality from the animal to qualify for the wag brigade we look for

animals who have really friendly personalities. her good with kids. good with seniors. impeccable with today the ability to resist the yummy so going to look well where you all at the airport. typically, is there a specific day or what the schedule we have animals in the any day of the monday, sunday through saturday. we typically are there in during the will often see animals between the hours of 10 in 2 our our white is all volunteers. so most of our volunteers have full-time jobs and they take time out to come to the airport to volunteer their time with their animals. so each animal works a 2 hour shift. they spend no more than
