>> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 7. >> good morning. thank you so much for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news. i'm stephanie lin. good saturday to you. we are covering a lot of news for you this morning. let's get things started with a look at the weather with brittany begley. hey brittany. yeah. rise and shine. happy saturday morning. we have a lot to break down for you as we plan your day. you can see right behind me the headline showing. yeah, it's kind of foggy this morning. we have a dense fog advisory wrapping up right now. but that fog. >> still lingering around. we're also going to watch for the potential of around 4 o'clock. and that could stay that way until 10. >> and then more thunderstorms could be headed our way

overnight as we take a look at this week. yeah, thankfully things are going to warm up, but we've got to get past the next couple of days. so taken again. a look at the big picture that dense fog is one of the stories for us today. we're also watching a winter weather warning in the sierra. you can see it's pretty snowy right now, but that podcast really just showing you foggy conditions. and again, the chance for a sprinkle or 2 and maybe some thunderstorms as we roll a class. the 4 o'clock hour. we'll break that down for you hour by hour or so. a lot going on right now as we speak. and as we head into the day of winter weather warning and more rain on the way and we'll break it all down for you. coming up next. right brittney, thank you. >> breaking news we are following this morning. a san jose police officer is recovering after being shot. that incident we know started around 10, 30 last night near the intersection of king and story roads. police say they were conducting a traffic stop when the driver got out of the car and started shooting at them. this is an image of the patrol car just tweeted out by san jose police and you can see the bullet hole in the

windshield. there. no officer was injured in that shooting. that first shooting. but the investigation led officers to a home on avenue. and that's when a man at the property started shooting at officers. and this time an officer was hit. but the injury is not life threatening. he's been taken to the hospital to be treated. the shooter eventually surrendered and was taken into custody. the investigation is ongoing. another big story we're following for you this morning. the chinese new year parade returns to san francisco celebrating the year of the rabbit. the rabbit symbolizes longevity, peace and prosperity. the event is expected to bring about a million people into the city. police say they'll be working around the clock to make sure that folks in the city who attend this parade feel protected and safe. >> that was important that you not only in the parade, but in the perimeter, in the community surrounding the parade. so people understand that we're out there and we're there to support

>> the parade starts tonight at 5.15, people are urged to arrive early and take public transportation because there's going to be some crowds and a large crowds this weekend are also expected to bring a big boost to chinatown. businesses. kron four's gayle ong spoke with some local store owners. >> before the annual chinese new year parade begins in san francisco saturday. there will be a community street fair in chinatown on grand avenue between california and broadway featuring dozens of food and concession since walks. we make them and owns the walk shop. her business will be front and center of the street fair and it brings in a lot of foot traffic. lot of. >> a lot a lot of what the local people and the big and people around the bay area and the tourist have something to look forward to chinatown. officials say one 3rd of the revenue for all of chinatown comes from the month of the lunar new year period. i'm so i'm waiting for that time. it was quiet at juneau, jewelry friday, but owner simon eat it

forward to after the community was hit hard during the pandemic is going to be great because all the schools, the kids line dance. >> you know, the performance many years, not having the raid. so hopefully it's not going to rain. but and the track more people come down. >> gayle ong kron, 4 news. and there are several road closures to keep in mind because of tonight's event. take a good look at your screen there. second street between market and mission will be closed starting at 2 this afternoon and several other road closures started 3 and again, the parade starts just after 5 this evening. the streets are expected to reopen tonight by 10:00pm. in the south bay. a terrifying road rage incident in san jose is caught on camera. the victim of the incident shared his story with kron four's dan thorn. >> terrifying road rage in san jose. a man armed with a machete is caught on video attacking the car of a

doordash driver. >> it's got become called it. you can overreact. you care. you can't. you can add to that, by the way. >> jerry gonzalez says this happened monday night on trade winds drive. he had just pulled out from an apartment complex when another driver flashing their high beams sped up behind him. gonzalez says he tapped his brakes and that set the other driver off. i just tap brakes. >> because really, i just want to let him know that girl what you saw there a little bit. you you know, a person give you for being pedestrian down here. the video then shows the driver dangerously going to the other lanes to pass gonzales. >> and one sees in front of him. the driver stops and jumps out of his bmw open his trunk. i think issues to and variable of better. >> it it's great to see you looking for something that something was a machete and he smashes the passenger side

window with it before gonzalez drives away. but the ordeal was not over yet in an effort to help police gonzalez decided to follow the driver of the bmw while on the phone with 9-1-1. >> phone companies, the attacker was falling to an apartment complex where he's then seen jumping out and chasing gonzalez's car with a large machete. got ok, you get over here. gonzalez eventually backs off and gets away unharmed. his work car, however, has seen better days. gonzalez says his advice to other drivers is to not give in to the aggressive behavior of some people on the road. i have no will toward the kobe get the help needs in the best way to, you know. >> want you know, just i have no hatred, though. bella sort of person. you just. it is just he did something stupid. should have done. >> the attackers license plate was clearly visible on gonzalez is dash cam video and

morning, police arrested a man accused of entering a jewish center. >> earlier this week and firing off several blank rounds. a photo from that incident is on the left side of your screen. no one was injured. police say the same man is suspected of also brandishing a handgun at a theater about boa street earlier this week. police say they searched the suspect's home and found items related to both incidents. the suspect's name has not been released. the former house speaker nancy pelosi was in san francisco on friday announcing a new 200 million dollars federal investment for the presidio. the money will help pay for things like maintenance and help keep the park help maintain ensure that the park remains free to the public. this is a special day because this place is a one. my favorite places. >> well, and now you're making perpetuating that specialness. >> pelosi's husband, paul well, who was attacked in the pelosi's home back in october and hospitalized. also made an

fog along the golden gate bridge. they're looking a little spooky, but also pretty as well. brittany. for sure. that's really the themes of rights yes. waking up moody this saturday. let's talk about what you do need to know. so again, you can see right here as we take a look live. look at those conditions. yeah, it's foggy. we have a dense fog advisories actually wrapping up, but it's still really foggy. >> plus, we have a sprinkle or 2. and take a look at your screen. here's a different look at the golden gate bridge and you can see what we're talking about. the dense fog and have a sprinkle or 2 on our camera. not to mention the roadways are still a little wet and slippery with all that extra traffic today. >> i'm just going to update you every 15 minutes in the driving conditions. taking a look at stormtracker 4. you can see the potential for a sprinkle or 2, just a sprinkle or 2. what we just showed in san francisco area. i just checked half moon bay. you can see to the south as even near san mateo, maybe a sprinkle or 2, but really? >> that rain is going to come a little bit later on and we'll break it down for you. >> in addition to the foggy conditions are going to see a

fog lingering around probably for the next hour. and as you step outside right now, i really feel like this temperatures are a lot like yesterday. you're not going to see a big gap and temperatures. so it's still going to be chilly. can see that for most part. we're in the 50's south south places like pacifica. and as we look up north, we're going to say right there around 45 the weekend weather, what we're really watching prayed for you. so that begins at 5.15. we'll see those cooler temperatures in the lower 50's. not to meption with that chance for showers and that chance for thunderstorms as well. so if you're going to head out i want to make sure that you bundle up. i want to make sure that you have an umbrella. alex is going to be chilly. and again, we have that chance for thunderstorms. of course, we're going to update you throughout the day. so we'll start around 4 o'clock. that's when we really have the potential for thunderstorms by 9 or 10 o'clock. you can see we can go from a sprinkle too. i'm right here in san francisco to a quarter inch of rain. so again, it just set up a tone that, yeah, we're going to be busy during the parade. even places like half moon bay models are showing you can see a half an inch of between 4

and 10. so it sets up the tone for today that, yeah, it's going to be chilly or side. yes. watch for fog this morning. and really it's going to be thunderstorms during the parade that we're all going to be monitoring for rest of the day. so your highs down south san jose. 64 right there on the coast, half moon bay. 59 and to the north. we're at 57. we have a winter storm warning in the sierra. break it down coming up next. all right, brittany, thank you. >> now in the south bay, where there's an ongoing safety issue of pedestrians getting hit and killed by cars as kron four's. justin campbell explains once assembly member is proposing a new bill to address this issue. >> i'm at a busy intersection here at san pedro square in order to make these crosswalks like this one behind me safer. a newly introduced bill would make it easier for drivers to spot pedestrians and bicyclist. >> these parked car is causing a blind spot for people trying to cross over to san pedro square i live in the east bay. there has been instances where

>> someone will run a stop sign when i'm walking because they hadn't seen me. luckily haven't been hit. so that's good. the a ranch houses luckly. she's never been hit on one of her walks. but she's in favor of the new proposed daylight bill by san jose assembly member alex this bill would prevent vehicles from being parked within 20 feet of a marked crosswalk are part when you're coming down the street and there's a car there. you won't be able to see a person at the desk fan and there. >> having that open is i think that that idea mark books of ages with streets from a transportation advocacy organization, he says 43 other states have implemented a version of the building and it saves lives. but i think the best example is hoboken, new jersey, which hasn't had a pedestrian death. i think in over 5 years. >> in large part, it's due to a variety of things that they did. but one of the big ones this day lighting last year,

san jose set a record for roadway deaths. 32 pedestrians were killed in 2022. the issue the city is desperately trying to fix >> everybody i think has driven to stockton one time in their life. to be honest. and so i think it's always good to try to protect now, if this bill does pass the assembly cities and counties across the state would have a year to make the changes at crosswalks and intersections reporting here in san jose. >> justin campbell kron, 4 news. >> a san francisco jury ruled elon musk is not guilty of fraud over a tweet he made in 2018. the jury reached the verdict after less than 2 hours of deliberations. musk had been sued by tesla shareholders over a series of tweets he wrote several years ago saying he had secured funding to take tesla private. but that deal never actually happen. the class action lawsuit claimed musk violated federal securities law with

his tweets. musk testified during the trial he had no ulterior motive here and he was only doing what he thought was best for shareholders. in the east bay. a thief broke into a walnut creek plant. you nurse or ii and got away with thousands of dollars. kron four's philippe djegal spoke with the owners of that nursery. there was the industrial heavy duty lock box that was attached here and lofthouse rolfe says the pop the lock box opened at around 4.30 thursday morning and use the spare key insight into her business once they got in, they actually moved all these items. >> they moved the peak heart squeeze through, continued on. and this is also where they exited locked house wolf, owns 2 girls, one plan that the palos verde, small and walnut creek. >> a high-end plant boutique, she figured would never be targeted by thieves. the suspect left the mess rummaging through what until now has been a safe place before stealing cash. she sure

>> i think i think. >> on friday, san francisco mayor london breed joined the african american historical and cultural society for this year's black history month kickoff celebration. the city hall event featured keynote speakers and musical performances and their breed took time to acknowledge the death of tyre nichols, who died this month after being beaten by 5 black memphis police officers breed said there's still a lot of work to be done. >> we honor our history. we honor those that came before us. we celebrate. but tomorrow we also know that we have to continue to roll up our sleeves and fight the battle. that still is yet to be won. >> lighted her dream keeper

a look at temperatures right now as we speak down to the south. 46 near san jose, half moon bay. 53 up to the north santa rosa. 43. so those temperatures a lot like yesterday, but we're still watching snow in the mountain. a break that down for you and more thunderstorms headed our way. >> all right. looking forward that update for name and breaking news we are following from overnight. a san jose police officer is recovering after being shot. kron four's camila barco is live for us in san jose this morning with the latest on this. good morning to camila. stephanie, this morning, the person responsible for shooting. >> a san jose police officer is in custody late last night. san jose police officers encountered that suspect twice in different 2 different parts in the city before being taken in. i want you to take a look at this picture of a san jose police officer's car. the shooting did strike that car that you're looking at your screen. the confrontation started late last night at 10:29pm. when 2 officers

pulled a car over for a traffic stop near the intersection for king and story road. now. police say the driver got out of his car and began shooting at the officers. bullets, like i said, struck the police car that you see here on your screen. and police say both officers fired back and also struck the suspect's car with bullets as it drove off. now neither one of those officers was hit or injured investigators. they got to work to find the person who started shooting at the officers and that led them to a residence in the 800 block of sinbad avenue. when officers got there, they found a man in the backyard of a home and officers say he started shooting at them during that confrontation. one officer was shot once in the leg. officers say that they did not shoot back after that happened. they also say the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody shortly after now, stephanie, the officer's injuries is set to be non life threatening. he is in the hospital where he is

being treated. now. we're waiting for san jose police to give us an update on this investigation. we're still trying to learn more about the suspect. but for now, i'll send it back to you. alright, camila, thank you for that update. >> 2 weeks after putting oakland's police chief on unpaid administrative leave. mayor sheng tao spoke with kron 4 about her decision. our to recess toss your reports. >> our goal isn't to be tune all. can mayor xing town alive rating to kron? 4 news about chief leronne armstrong and why the city still has no one formerly in charge of the city's police department. >> our goal is to make sure we are fully and carefully taking into account the very serious problems discussed in the report and taking corrective actions. at issue is this report performed recently by an outside agency. the report accuses the chief of failing to properly discipline. the sergeant involved in both the hit and run. >> and discharging his weapon at police headquarters while trying to cover it up. the chief maintained he didn't get a chance to take action

because the investigation was taken away by the outside agency. we have to continue acknowledging that there's room for improvement. former city council member lauren taylor and mayoral candidate stands by the chief. he says that the report expose problems but not of the chiefs doing. look at. >> community members who historically keep police at bay with distrust have rallied around the support of this to you. we have made significant progress. and i think that. is a testament to where we are. it's a testament to chief our strong leadership. and at this point when we recognize issues and challenges that exist with investigations, et cetera, we should be working with this year to solve those as opposed to silent. >> a spokesperson with the oakland chapter of the naacp says that the community is suffering without armstrong and the department needs a leader to guide staff. mayor tao says the proper procedure

needs to play out. i do believe in our voter approved civilian oversight. and we need to let our oversight bodies act. >> as for the chiefs status, the mayor gave no timeline for when reviews may conclude to determine his fate. theresa kron, 4 news. >> in the north bay, a man is in custody for a shooting that left a girl injured by a stray bullet on tuesday. it happened near vallejo high school. police say they booked the suspect. leone are a gene into the solano county ga jail. officers believe the shooting was between 2 moving cars and the girl had been walking nearby when she was injured. on the peninsula last month's mass shooting in half. moon bay is exposing many ugly truths about the living conditions. farm workers are subjected to a recent study at uc merced said has found some heartbreaking findings. according to the study, almost half of farm workers said they lacked basic health insurance and between one-third and one-half said they suffer from

at least one chronic condition. well, over half do not qualify for unemployment. while 54% reported feeling are experiencing food, insecurity, 19% reported feelings of nervousness or anxiety. 15% said they worry uncontrollably and 14% say they experience depression or hopelessness more than a 3rd of farm workers would not file a complaint against an employer because they said they are afraid of losing their jobs. the recent mass shootings have led to new calls to expand mental health services, especially for the api community. on friday assembly member phil ting announced 6.5 million dollars in state funds for a richmond nonprofit called rams. it provides community mental health services. >> at a time when so many folks nation, commute really feel under threat. this organization in particular has been a safe haven for some of the families. so many low-income families in particular who really have

breaking news we're following from overnight. a san jose police officer is recovering after being shot. >> kron four's camila barco is live for us in san jose this morning with the latest on what we know. good morning to camilla. >> stephanie, we're currently at one of 2 locations where san jose police officers encountered the suspect that is said to have shot that san jose police officer last night. right behind me is a look down. same bat avenue. several san jose police officers are here on scene. you can take a look. i'm on the right hand side of your a group of san jose police officers here. there are other several officers going in and out of one specific house. we're still waiting to see where exactly this shooting at this location that took place. but i did want you to take a look at this picture on your screen. one of the shootings did strike a san jose police officer's car. the confrontation all started last night at 10. 29 pm when 2

officers pulled the car over us dot for over a traffic stop near the intersection of king and story road. now. police say the driver got out of his car and began shooting at the officers. bullets struck the police car that you see out there on your screen. police say both officers fired back and also struck the suspect's car with bullets as it drove off. neither one of those officers was hit or injured investigators. they got to work. they got to work to find the person who started shooting at the officers and that led them to a residence in the 800 block of sinbad avenue. and that's where we're currently at right now. when officers got here, they found a man in the backyard of a home and officers say he started shooting at them during that confrontation. one officer was shot once in the leg. officers say that they did not shoot back after that happened. they also say the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody shortly after. and stephanie, again, i want to show you a live picture here on saying that

avenue where that confrontation ended last night, the offers officer's injury is said to be non life threatening. he is in the hospital being treated. of course, we're waiting to get more details from san jose police. but for now, i'll send it back to you. all right, miller, thank you for staying on top of that story for us. >> now to another big story we're following for you this morning. the chinese new year parade returns to san francisco celebrating the year of the rabbit. the rabid symbolizes longevity, peace and prosperity. the event is expected to bring about a million people to the city. wow. police say they will be working around the clock to make sure people in the city who attend the parade feel safe and protected. >> that's why it's important that you not only in the parade, but in the perimeter, in the community surrounding the parade. so people understand that we're out there and we're there to support that. >> the parade starts at 05:15pm. people are urged to arrive early and take public transportation because large crowds are expected. and the

huge gathering this weekend is also expected to bring a big boost to chinatown. businesses. kron four's gayle ong spoke with some local store owners. >> before the annual chinese new year parade begins in san francisco saturday. there will be a community street fair in chinatown on grand avenue between california and broadway featuring dozens of foods and concessions walks. we make them and owns the walk shop. her business will be front and center of the street fair and it brings in a lot of foot traffic. lot of. >> a lot a lot of local people and the big and people around the bay area and the tourist have something to look forward to chinatown. officials say one 3rd of the revenue for all of chinatown comes from the month of the lunar new year period. i'm so wait before that time it was quiet at juneau, jewelry friday. but owner simon eat it says that will change this weekend. wait with the lot of people came to see the rain and bible. you talking about that today.

were noticing light sprinkles right now as we speak and not to mention the chance of thunderstorms a little bit later on. we'll break it all down for you. so in terms of the dense fog that's going to be lingering around even a 15 to north of us. we're going to see foggy conditions. i think things slowly will start to look better in terms of fog around 9 o'clock this morning. but take a look at stormtracker 4. you can see it setting up that home. right now. it's a sprinkle or 2, but the real story is going to be as we fast for that clock at one 30 again with the potential. you can see the showers coming off the coast. places like san francisco, even half moon bay. and as we fast forward it around 4.15, you can things are going to get a little more intense for us, especially in the san francisco area near the parade as we fast, 46 o'clock things will be moving towards oakland area as we fast forward to a 30. that's when we have that chance again to see those from the half moon bay area all the way up to santa rosa by 9, 13, 9.45. things will start to clear out. but as you wake up on sunday morning. again, we have chances of a
