us through that. yes, so not a lot of people doing. a lot of people don't even think about their great strength until they have trouble opening a jar opener ride or something like that. and so grip strength. >> is a predictor of your overall strength and overall strength as a predictor of your overall health. okay. interesting. so overall health, you know, they've done studies on this and they found that decrease in muscular strength also has an effect on your rate of death. so it's it's very problematic. something you really need to pay attention to because it increases not only your death but disability illness. your risk of heart attack and and stroke. so we've got to pay attention good as well. i hope to have the group tests me on this. i am. and the way we test we test overall health overall strength with by testing your greatest, ok, what is this device kisses? the hand man? and i'm on that are ok, so we're testing your
9:19 am
about your ability to squeeze really hard as well as stabilize. oh, dear. so hope opening jars. so i mean, this could be and i you know, yes, but we'll unit keep your arm and right and go ok, and you're going to squeeze and hold it for 5 seconds. okay. everyone should know. i am left-handed. so is testing this. on my left hand. so this is much harder than it looks easy as high you can. this is i don't know how promising this is going and then you go by and then you co case it. and so what you would do keep check of that? i have to calculate that in with your age and your ok, ok? so because i didn't program. and in pat. so you want always try to test very lee, because what we're looking for, everybody usually always asked what was that good, right? was it bad, right? right. and actually we're looking for a change. so if there's 11 pound change in
9:20 am
your great that's why it's good to get a baseline. then we then that increases your risk of cardiovascular. okay. so make sure you get a baseline and then track it and see if there's any kind of change a because as you get older, you do lose a strength, muscular strength. that's true. so we need to watch out for that because it's going affect your ability to, you know, be strong and not fall. so the best way to measure group straight is to get one of these devices. yeah, you can get one of i i tested patients in the in the clinic with this. this is less than $30. so you can do it yourself. very few. the ones that we have that at the at the clinic also a lot more expensive. the 500 and you can get away with this, ok? and but you want to do 3 trials and rest. 15 seconds in between each. each one, got it. all right. is so you showed us how to measure grip strain. is there a certain
9:21 am
when we talk about the amount of weight that we have to be able to to squeeze? we talk about that. important because of the fact that we're looking at. we're not looking at for absolute. we're looking for relative relative strength. okay. if you are an older adult, i would say a woman needs to be able to grip at least 43 cayman about 60 68 pounds, ok? but we're just just as an older adult and just to be able to do activities of daily living. okay. so we need to strengthen its important to strengthen because we use our hands a lot more than we really think through ripping through opening in the door. so these are all exercises you can do with without equipment. this is this is just a pvc pipe with a cable attached to it, which want to do is add a weight. if if you're not that strong, you don't have to add a way but you could add a gallon jug of water, which is 8 pounds or you could add a
9:22 am
kettle bell. but you wanted to do this. so your wrist has several motions. it's going to go up and down flexion and extension. and then this is what we're working on. so this is going to helps with filled up your grip strains. yes. so you want to lower it all the way your body down and then bring it up? very good. yes. so this is a really good exercise. the other reason other way, the reason we need grace stanke is so we could pinch things so pitching this happens to be my book. by the i'm not surprised on longevity. so being so take a heavy book or a heavy piece of wood and then squeeze and hold it. so that would be a good way to work on the the gripping right. inch3ng know that. frying pan. we all have yes, so we could. this is another motion that we do we call it super nation probation. so you can take a frying pan and then flip it
9:23 am
over and called it for 2 seconds and then flip it back. okay. so over and flip. so that's one way. karen. we have about 10 so used to flexion and extension like this. just curls like this but flipped. sides. also a towel ring out the tell all right perfect. so just a you see everyday household items you can use to build your grip strength. absolutely perfect. our health expert karen owoc. so great to see guys so much for joining us. >> all right. have a will will be right
