9:44 am
well, hot, actually almost late last week. well, that's going to be subsiding as it stands now until monday morning. they have i watch that's been posted. it's been around for a while up there around tahoe. this is going to erode away as we get a little cooler and we're going to add a little bit of snow up there about 6,000 feet and above is what we're looking at here is the drop in temperatures up there. if you're headed, they're in that direction. 50 tomorrow by tuesday. here comes the snow. 45 on wednesday. so he's going to walking back into winter as well. that handed over to future cast. 4 to 20 will be clear. the skies out opening up nicely. so it looks great with all the sun. but the cloud cover comes back again for tomorrow in this low that drop there it goes. it finally got some moisture with it now because this low so close to us and that cold air upstairs that causes an agitation. so that means thunderstorms are possible. hail one look for that on tuesday. also through wednesday as well here, those onshore winds at work all day today through tonight. tomorrow, even as late as about monday night into about
9:45 am
tuesday morning. we'll be dealing with this and this is a climate control. but we have the cold air upstairs with that low working its magic once it drops to the south, we do some of those winds. here's another shot of this. this is the longer range forecast, the low in place. we've got to keep the mention of rain just about all next week. but again, the lion share will be tuesday and wednesday, taking a breather, hopefully on the weekend next weekend. in the most system to watch out for as well. 4 zone forecast covering you for this sunday. much reduced temperatures here. 56 san francisco to the coast coupled with winds mid 50's quite chilly here. 60 going on for burlingame. we've got 63 foster city, 64 for palo alto in the south bay mid to upper 60's. we've got the east bay shoreline lower 60's tri valley, upper 60's. it looks like 67 walnut creek and concord. 68. yes, there's our one. 71 for vacaville, 60 per vallejo. 67 going on for napa. 69 santa rosa and again, this unsettled week were mentioning thunder showers possible on tuesday and even into wednesday and got to keep
9:46 am
those showers around. although the sun may poke out a little bit on thursday into friday. little warm up in the next weekend, though, stephanie. >> all right, dave, thank you. asian heritage month kicks off tomorrow and starting off our coverage is a very special guest. santa clara county's very first woman, asian and lgbtq fire chief. so wanna gerd go? thank you so much. she for being here with us this morning. thank you for the invitation. it's it's quite an honor and a pleasure. and you know, you and i actually met about a year ago when you first took on the position as house the year been for yahoo. well, santa clara county fire department fire district that really protects 7 cities. towns on the west side of the county adjacent to san jose. >> but the department itself has a lot more we provide executive leadership for county, 9, 1, communications which dispatches law a shed. the sheriff's office county ambulance county, fire county parks and other entities. we
9:47 am
also provide executive leadership for the county office of emergency management. and we also are contracted by the county for county fire marshal services. so all of that said all the responsibilities that the department has. it has been quite a year, but it's been one filled with a lot of satisfaction just knowing that we provide an incredible conduit to the community for when they when they're in need. >> and so obviously a lot of things that you've had to oversee this past year was looking at your career to you've had 20 years of experience in the fire service. very impressive. you started your career, though. and biotechnology. that's how did you make that pivot? >> my immigrated with me here at in the to the united states in the early 1970's, my dad or my stepdad was an american vietnam veteran. and so coming here and we were the only family members and the first one to go to college. i'm in my family and what that meant.
9:48 am
really that translated to was part-time jobs. lot of part-time jobs and so i went from i know, but sociology to psychology and finally landed as a bio, major working and luckily was able to get a job right after college and biotech. but all of those experiences, whether it was part time jobs or my educational academic career, i feel really fit into my role currently in advocating for the community. i think the perspectives i was fortunate to have just helps around the fact that we are public servants. and i as many of my ministry of staff really hold that and the department as a whole hold that really to our hard like we are here for the community. so when you asked, well, how do you round that in? it's like it's this place that will how far as biology from fire says, well, it's fire science. there's a science to paying attention to fire behavior, protective
9:49 am
services. but there's also science and putting out fire or hazmat calls so it falls in. yeah, absolutely. it is interesting because when davis doing is whether you are even telling me to that you pay attention to the forecast every day because >> of the science involved with that and how that can affect firefighting efforts. correct. >> fire behavior is often really predicted. you can protect it through the whether the fuel in terms of how dry the fuel is in the topography. this is for real while in firefighting for structure. firefighting weather still plays a role as well. if it's windy, it's a windy day. could cast the embers as we have had happenei in san jose. i'm with the santana a row fire back in. i think it the 19 i'm sorry, 2000. i think it was 2010, something like that. yes. >> and you know, when you are making that transition from biotechnology, obviously there is some crossover when it comes to the science and understanding, you know, weather patterns and all of
9:50 am
that. you i imagine you had this pretty much start from the ground up in the fire. so, yes, right? you were on the front lines fighting the fire. so i mean, did you face any challenges with that? >> now, as i'm going to say that maybe experiences, not everybody's the department santa clara county fire the department as fortunate to become a part of in 2002 has been immensely supportive of all races, genders, etcetera. since i was hired. so hired as a firefighter became a paramedic. actually, my paramedic internship here in san francisco with your fire. chief jimmy nicholl said she was my she was a firefighter. i was a firefighter back in the day but moved up to the ranks. to the time chief for a brief, put a period of time and then deputy chief up to my current position today as the fire chief. right. and does something else i read about you is that you're on the front lines of obviously many major fires, but a recent one
9:51 am
being the czu lightning complex fire. >> forced a lot of evacuations. you were out on the front lines of that. what was that experience like and and how did you motivate your team members? because the hours are pretty tough, right? >> so the way we supported the czu lightning complex was through deployment of resources and through deployments have overhead resources. so we had engines there as well as incident management team that fire. i was not directly a part of but i have been out on deployment on larger campaign fires in the past one in was the lodge complex where my fire engine and the strike team that there was burned over. so there is a real translation of danger. the danger that goes inherently with what you're doing, which is putting the community before yourself and really trying to mitigate where you can with its students that sometimes are so large that you just have to get people out of the way. and
9:52 am
sometimes you can go in there and create strategic fire breaks and try to move the fire in a way again, really paying attention to the weather so that the weather is a tool that helps determined straight shot is tactics and that eventually with mission to put it out. well, yeah, so much to manage when you got there >> thank you. of course, to you and all of our firefighters for their brave service to the community, putting yourself really on the line of danger to protect our communities. do you have any advice for those who are curious to enter the fire service, but they're not sure where to get started or they might be even intimidated by the process. >> you know, the fire service as a whole has evolved from and its inception of really these volunteer brigades. that would be the community helping each other to get buckets of water to put on fires to where we're at today, which is has met calls. tech rescue calls again, large scale campaign fires. it is. it is involved
9:53 am
in a way that the knowledge base at the college and college level really partners with fire agency. so there are a whole host of junior colleges in the bay area that have either fire science programs or fire academies so that when you graduate, you get your firefighter one certificate. in addition to that, again, one of the big things that the fire department that delivers is emergency medical response services. that's our first responder services. some of the fire departments just like here in san francisco offers transport services. so you really need to go into an emt program that again is offered at the junior college level and then that from there the doors open because then you start making relationships. you can start asking questions and really find out. how do you get into the fire service? because it's both about community engagement. volunteerism, really, again, putting the community before yourself and then a knowledge base as well as maintaining your physical fitness. wonderful santa clara county
9:54 am
fire chiefs who want go. >> thank you so much for your time. and again, your service to the community. we appreciate it. thank you. and honor. all right. we'll be right back. numbers move you. but some can stop you in your tracks. like the tens of thousands of people who were diagnosed with certain hpv-related cancers. for most people, hpv clears on its own. but for those who don't clear the virus, it can cause certain cancers. gardasil 9 is a vaccine given to adults through age 45 that can help protect against certain diseases caused by hpv. including cervical, vaginal, vulvar, anal, and certain head and neck cancers such as throat and back of mouth cancers, and genital warts. gardasil 9 doesn't protect everyone and does not treat cancer or hpv infection. your doctor may recommend screening
9:55 am
for certain hpv-related cancers. women still need routine cervical cancer screenings. you shouldn't get gardasil 9 if you've had an allergic reaction to the vaccine, its ingredients, or are allergic to yeast. tell your doctor if you have a weakened immune system, are pregnant, or plan to be. the most common side effects include injection site reactions, headache, fever, nausea, dizziness, tiredness, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and sore throat. fainting can also happen. help protect what counts. talk to your doctor or pharmacist about gardasil 9.
