the remainder of the week and not bad at all. as we have spring hanging first out there. yeah, we get into summer on wednesday. however, meet a logic, lee or not to live up to it as summer is on a weeklong hiatus. stephanie. >> all right, dave, thank you. a prom for continues. our celebration of pride month with a look at dragon clear performance culture in oakland. and joining me live now to share more clash members, king, lotus boy and good morning to the both of you morning. the morning. i so excited to have you here with us. love the energy and the look sank. you are going glam so tell us a bit clash of the name, the history, how to get started. >> close was founded in 2018 by mama, celeste and beatrix lehane tax. the bay area's only drag festival. >> and it's not only consists of the dry festival, which is a 3 day dry bonanza, but also
9:48 am
amazing year-round programming. the whole point is to uplift black and brown and trans performers who often don't get spotlight in that and it was, you clash the lash. some of us slash oakland because it's really oakland-based the area cary-based. yeah. and one beautiful in my oakland is really highlighting the amazing art and history and culture that comes out of oakland, right? we know san francisco is known for amazing drag but >> oakland, in my open is just as good. if not better and brings up such amazing artists. and the other great thing i love clash is that we do workshops and panels, which is something that a lot of other drag festivals don't classes really about the community and about uplifting and educating, right? because starting drag is such a big right? so a lot of people don't know what to do order to start so going to a clash in being able to have mentors for instruction or just hearing
9:49 am
people talk about their experiences on panels. it's so you guys just tell that just wrapped recently with tell us how it went. >> was. credible. incredible. there were just 3 days of nonstop performance. the you know, 9th street in oakland was shut washington it was our second year ever of doing islah party. that was all ages opens all free. ask for donations. but, you know, i'm so for me, that was really special because it was the first time we were really >> trying to involve the entire community and partner with local businesses open to uplift to get people who maybe don't always come to oakland to say, hey, this is what our vibrant city is about. and this is what dragon performance art is all about. and you can see nonstop. stunning for stunning and what your opinion makes for a great drag >> i'm a reveal king. okay. in
9:50 am
drag a it's like when you're wearing a costume and open it up and something out underneath problem if you're way off another way off shot out nikki the drag queen of the year. you does this number where she has like literally 6 weeks on point them off one after another. and never got even never what that? >> you know, for me, it's all about the joy. if i see real joy in a drag number, i'm biased. but there were some king group numbers, rebel kings of oakland, 9 inch males where that is my drug sibling, tennessee williams williams who we had the first ever all. >> why black indigenous tracking supergroup. so i part of it. we did a group number. it was just really cool to get represent kings and that way as you probably know, king there does not give in the spotlight as often as drag. queens are kings non-binary jack things. you know, there's a lot of out there don't
9:51 am
identify king or queen like a drag monster on a drug clown. and that's cool. that's amazing that drug is about is you can define it. however, you want to >> and that's the other thing clashes that it really a kings and all types of performance. deejays performance, art musicians and people. you know, we book people from the bay area and beyond and we have a special curatorial committee. that parkland and run. so really making sure that we're always focusing on absolutely. and just last weekend, we had the country's first ever drag laureate on the and we talked. i asked same question, you know it. it really feels like lgbtq+. >> rights are, you know, a bit under threat right now. one human rights campaign, the just announced a state of emergency because of this wave of, you know, legislation that's being passed across the country. yes, the lgbtq community. so what are your thoughts to that? and you know, what actions are you asking from the community?

first thought is that it's nothing new, unfortunately. i mean, now it's very >> blatant and in your face and now we're having very violent laws and rhetoric that is clear. and but i think previously people are a little bit more quiet about it, right? little more subtle. but, you know, if you look at history right, and trans people to conforming people be secure. way to ask. plus, we've always been under attack because we've never fat fit into the norm. right. and what i think is that when people see something different, something that they've never seen before or something that i'm familiar to them. some care, right? i mean, you're scared. you you do things that you maybe wouldn't normally do. you and i mean, there's so much that we could ask as allies ship. but, yeah, i mean, i think the main thing is tangibly supporting drag artist right being a drag artist is extremely hard to make a living. i mean, bare and i we both have jobs outside of drag because very difficult unless you get on a television show or you are
9:53 am
influencer in some way. it's really difficult to make a living just from doing drag. i know so many artists who have multiple part-time jobs, another job and have to really mix after sacrifices in order to make happen. so i'd say show up for local drag artists go to the show's tipped them. you look downright, especially in the in pride month. you know, if you work at a company organization that maybe isn't necessarily like a nonprofit that's based on lgbt rights. but you want to have a pride celebration, welcome local artists and pay them well, because it's so scary to be a drag artists right now, right? people are going to hate crime left and right. even are even in our liberal bay area. i'm nowhere is really safe. what about i think that there's just so many tangible ways to provide support, whether that's calling representative that to being a royal guard. member of drag story hour. just standing there and being a physical supporter. >> there's so much fear and false narratives out there,
9:54 am
performers and and trans people are just really beautiful. people living their lives and there's nothing scary about so giving voice to that. and, you know, just making that a wave is really what i would say. just there's always always time to speak out. it's always time to show your support. and it's always time to stand with with all of all lotus boy and bear clash. thank you so much to the both of you for your time. thank thank you. and i hope to see you at the show. all right. thank you so much. and we'll be right back.
