overlook road berkeley. police say they responded to a report of a victim being chased by someone with a knife. police got to the scene, they found a woman stabbed to death. 2 other victims, a man and woman were also found with stab wounds. officers say the attacker drove off in a stolen car after a brief chase, the man was arrested. the investigation is ongoing. police also investigating an armed robbery. it happened just blocks away from the uc berkeley campus saturday afternoon. police say a person with a gun approached a woman walking down warring street near the corner of dwight way. and the clark kerr campus buildings. police say the person took the woman's bag before speeding off in a dark gray car. well, meanwhile, oakland police are investigating a shooting that happened just before 8 o'clock last night. video from the citizen app shows police activity on 98th avenue and lawler street near the las neighborhood. the victim was

taken to a hospital. no word yet on how they're doing. no arrests made yet. francisco a big encampment fire near ucsf children's hospital is finally under control. >> this is video from the citizen app. the fire started burning near 2.80 or rather under 2.80, near mariposa street. as you can see there, we're told the flames spread to nearby brush, but it's all since been knocked down. no one was injured. starting tomorrow. free covid tests are coming back. the biden administration is digging into their stockpiles to restart their free test program. >> kron kron four's washington, d.c., correspondent hannah brandt has the details. >> starting monday, u.s. households can order covid tests for free. again, we think it's really important to prevent the spread of covid for people to be able to test to know whether they have it or not. the biden administration is restarting the website covid tests dot gov so that americans can order up to 4 free tests per household and their pain. 600 million dollars to various

to start construction in the spring and have the bart large up and running by summer 2025. what a neat project happening today. a traditional polynesian voyaging canoe is coming to san francisco. the legendary hokulea canoe docked in sausalito last week. crew with the double hold as you can see, right there are working to revive the lost art of polynesian voyaging. a free event happens today at noon and aquatic park with cultural attributes. this all part of a four-year voyage of the pacific ocean for this ship that started alaska in the summer. the canoe plans to stop at nearly 100 indigenous territories with the goal of teaching people about the importance of caring for our planet. coming up on the kron 4 morning news, a bay area restaurant cooks up all kinds of dishes. >> using one locally popular fish. plus, a possible government shutdown could be getting closer. more on who could be impacted the most.

san jose police are looking for a driver who struck 3 people out walking and happened. 2 o'clock saturday morning at a parking lot near alum rock avenue and stuart avenue. officers found 3 people who had been hit. the driver had left the scene. the condition of the victims is unknown. police are still investigating. in national news. we're now less than a week away from potential government shutdown if the clock strikes midnight on september, 30th before congress passes a spending deal, the federal government will shut down hundreds of thousands of people would be put on temporary leave without pay, but some essential services would continue, including things like border protection. federal law enforcement, tsa, an air traffic control and they would all be required to work without pay if that shutdown happens. if the federal workforce isn't getting paid. members of congress shouldn't get paid either members of congress shouldn't get paid. if they don't do their job.

>> several lawmakers have introduced the no budget, no pay at saying a federal funding freezes. so do lawmakers checks, transportation secretary pete buttigieg warned congress that critical training programs would be halted. attorney general merrick garland saying a shutdown would disrupt the department of justice. some hopeful signs this morning in negotiations between the writers guild of america and the hollywood studios. the big 4 of studio bosses are believed to be approving final touches to the agreement. according to variety magazine. and industry insider says the talks are mainly down to language now and that negotiations are in the homestretch. writers and actors have been fighting for better streaming residuals and ai regulation. those on the picket line say they're feeling encouraged about the talks. >> you know, for 5 months the ceos have been missing. they've been on their vacations on their yachts while 144 days, members have been getting people have been at risk of losing their homes over the last few days.

there's more mended fences. there's been more of a more momentum both sides to get a deal done. >> members of the writers guild have been on the picket lines now for 145 days. i mean, time the united auto workers strike is expanding to 38 locations in 20 states. the strikes escalation targeting parts distribution facilities for 2 of the big 3 automakers. union members now demanding a 40% wage increase over the next 4 years. automakers have only agreed to about half of that so far, ford is not being targeted in this portion of the strike because the union says they've made progress with the company in contract negotiations. president biden is expected to meet with striking workers on tuesday. governor gavin newsom issued several vetoes friday night. one of them, including a bill requiring judges to consider children's gender identities in custody. disputes san

francisco state senator scott wiener, coauthor that bill, he spoke with kron 4 last night about the governor's veto. >> this is really project and particularly tragic because governor newsom for decades, he's been for the lgbtq community. a true so really disappointed that up to code this important legislation. much, you know, all it did was just to make it really clear. but if you're already out force in a custody dispute, which is never a pretty situation. new half transgender kids and you have one parent support could one parent who is hostile to kids being transgender. that would be determinative. but of the many, many factors that a court to consider the custody case. that would also be one

meet a group of women challenges, stereotypes and captivating audiences. one show at a time. rob was amanda hari introduces us to an all female mariachi band. >> for more than a decade, the music has continued to play mariachi them a meal or make begin their journey back in 2007, it was founded on the san francisco state campus by name for clase his and really a child vets. both came from families of mariachi musicians and they thought it would be special to put together a band that celebrates it in the music genre largely dominated by can say that. >> every time we perform somewhere and there are little girls. president or even young older women when they see that the entire ensemble is all female. you can see their eyes brighten up, especially the

going to expect moving we're going to expect a successful opening monday morning at 05:00am. remember, this is just northbound will come back in october the south okay. >> let's talk more about the southbound lanes. what can we expect when that comes around? same thing southbound will be closed. october 20th the weekend october. 20th. >> it will just be the area of state route. 87 and it will be the same closures, insane detours. and what are the detours? let's talk back about northbound and then mention southbound. but the detours for the north northbound construction yet detours have been for state route. 85 17 2.80, and so far so good. we haven't had too many major backups. so we're very happy with impacts on the on state rocks. >> and when it comes to the southbound construction, what is that going to look like? and what are the detours going to be without the detours will just be the reverse. it would be the opposite. so we do have the map. i make sure to send

overturned california's ban on large capacity magazines in his ruling. the judge wrote, quote, based on the text history and tradition of the second amendment, this law is unconstitutional. state attorney general rob bonta has 10 days now to appeal the decision in a statement bonta called the ruling a quote, incredibly dangerous mistake. the same judge overturned that ban in 2019. president biden is creating the white house's first-ever office of gun violence prevention. he says it will strengthen existing laws and support gun safety legislation at the state level. our dc correspondent jessi tenure has more. >> do something. something president biden says. that's the plea he hears after every mass shooting in the country and friday. the president says his administration is taking action. we're going centralize accelerate tense of our work to save more lives more quickly. the white house's first-ever office of gun violence prevention will tackle the issue from the

$5 and $0.54 a gallon. brian will reports on why we're seeing gas prices skyrocket. >> this is usually the time year we start seeing prices go down because demand is going down the summer driving season is over. we're not seeing that. john trainor with triple a says this is because the global oil market is high at $90. a barrel and half of what you're paying at the pump is determined by this. and for many it hurts. i'm paying more in gas. then. >> i am in rent at this point since allyson summers drives to work, really just cuts into my profits of the end of the month and what i'm able to spend. so i'm really cutting back on a lot of things that i usually wouldn't have to others getting creative to save some money. >> like ali issa and her husband using most of their gas to take their kids to school. you guys just kind of rolled into >> bridge where we're trying to save money. but the gas

throughout the day they plan on reopening. >> that stretch of roadway at 5 o'clock tomorrow morning. we do know that that stretch of roadway is really well use. and that's the main purpose of why they're doing this project is to make your drive there are a lot of people use this part of the highway. 87 to get to downtown san jose were to the airport in san jose in crews working through the weekend to wrap up that construction. the project started on friday at 09:00pm and caltrans telling us it will be completed by tomorrow morning. this is a pavement repair work on northbound lanes in santa clara county wants the northbound lanes are completed. they will start work on the southbound lanes starting in october. and these closures are 2 repaired. the concrete pavement on those lanes. caltrans telling us this morning having these closures now will shorten the duration of the project and also helped them beat and completed this project before the winter weather arrives.
