9:47 am
expert karen owoc is here to tell us what gratitude can do for our well-being. and she introduces us to some ways that we can cultivate. hey, karen, known for always lovely to see you. and we're so grateful to have you here with us so, you know, first of all, walk us through the health benefits of practicing gratitude. a mental health. very good for mental health. a lot of people that >> are. >> are grateful. they tend to be less depressed. so therefore, they also lowered their risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia and early death. so that's a good thing. also mental strength tend to be stronger so more resilient so they can bounce back from you. don't things that are difficult and then also physical health that they found that they tend to be less sick interest. yeah, okay. so all all all things that are good. it really is all tied together. right? and they sleep letter to and
9:48 am
that's also tied did to good health as well. that sounds fantastic. good night's sleep. so yes, what are some ways that we can easily practice that gratitude every day because sometimes like, oh, yeah, it's a nice idea. want to think about what i'm grateful for. but you know, you you're you're introducing us to some actual, you know, ways that we can put that pen to paper. exactly. because gratitude is actually a learned skill. so it's not something we're born with this. so it's something that we do need to practice. you have to get those health benefits, right? so number one is the gratitude and this is a tree i put together and and what you do is see think and this is a really good time to do this. not only for thanksgiving, but i encourage it for all through christmas because as kids get a little excited about christmas. they're thinking less about giving maybe and more about getting. yeah. and and so this is a good way for them to, you know, and it's good for adults say, take take one of these little cards and pay and put
9:49 am
what you're grateful for on the back. so that's where i did some with some pictures. you could put pictures. you can write on it. the kids could draw a picture of what they're grateful for this and and hang it up. and so it's a visual display of all the things set. you're grateful for when year when you experience gratitude here. also happier to yes, yes. and then, okay. you also get better sleep. we're always looking for ways to get better. you're on the morning, right? right. but i'm a fantastic idea with the gratitude tree and tell us about about what you over here. so this is the gratitude box. so it's kind of similar and i encourage you to get a box and decorated things with that. make you happy% obviously, hawaii. yes, yeah. and then get some note cards and every day, right, 3 things that you're grateful and then you put it in the box and they could be as benign as you
9:50 am
know, getting your a cup of coffee at your favorite place or could be having dinner with your best friend. they put it in there and what i like about it is that if ever you're feeling down and depressed, you go into your box and you start going to do and start goong do all those. they only taking stock and just counting our blessings. really. exactly. for those who might. have a little bit of a writer's block and who might struggle to come up with things that they are grateful for, because, you know, we all face so much stress and so pressure on a day-to-day basis and there's a lot going on. >> in the world right now, any suggestions on some cheesy prop. so we do have i provide you with some prompts. one is just take stock of. >> what made you happy that day or what made you laugh out loud that day what? what something that do accomplishing you feel really good about lot of people don't really. you know, pat themselves on the back and and
9:51 am
so i think this is a really good time take it, know, be grateful for some of those things that you you do and you accomplished. also it to really think about people live there in your life, things that are in your life. and what if those things were no longer in your and that might also prompt you to be, i'm grateful for the in them help you with the little right. another idea for the gratitude box or the gratitude tree. and you also have this idea of a can of beans. yeah. what is true, what that's all about? and actually this isn't my idea. this somebody that did a study on this can of beans. >> to to do this once a week, okay. for one meal because it a can of beans once a week per meal. and that's it, ok? and that's it, ok? they found that they the people that did that the it's a very mindful
9:52 am
activity we often lose track of food scarcity in our lives. and so this is one way to say, okay, this is all i need. you know, i'm very grateful for what i have right here. and nothing more because there are some people that really struggle to help get food on the table. but this is one way to really focus on that and be mindful of of what you haven't. that's and we have just about 90 seconds i want to make sure we get to the other 2 items that you have. you have credit, gradual drops. tell that this is one way to have something tangible. and so it could be a rocket could be something else. but 2, when you take this rock, put it in your your pocket or wear it like, right where it but it's a reminder of being grateful. so it's something that's always there and you're thinking about it. you put in your pants here. you're wrapping up the rock think about something graceful. and then the oregon
9:53 am
me very mindful activity. and it's a very calm the activity kids. when you're doing oregon, me, you're not thinking about the past or or the future you're staying in the and i also made a little box to put my lock in and then lastly, you have a journal a journal so you you could do hard journal. but what i really like is the day one and you could put pictures in there. and so you could chronicle not only your thoughts, but also things that are very important to you by, you know, things that you took pictures of. so i love that idea. okay. works really well for were karen owoc? a health expert here, too. introducing us to some easy ways that we can practice gratitude this holiday season. thank you so very welcome. all right. we'll very welcome. all right. we'll be right back.
