back-to-school season is officially here and many high schools in the bay area are cracking down on cell phone use mount diablo unified school district has launched a pilot program aiming reducing sell for news on campuses. for more on this kron four's justine waldman spoke with their superintendent, adam clark. what and what are the benefits year to not? let kids have cell phones in schools? >>yes. so what we're trying to do we are trying to provide our students with a safe and welcoming environment where they that they can be fully engaged in class they can. you know, connect and speak learn to to get to know their classmates and school mates and not be on their phones all the and taking away their attention from all the great things that we have going on.
11:45 pm
a school. >>they not bring their phones at all with them to school or they can have them. and what are they supposed to do with them once they bring them to campus? >>yes, implementing we have something called a yondr bags. if you've been to recently, if you've been to a comedy show or some concerts, when you enter into the facility, you place your phone into an individualized is magnetically lot. and so you can keep your phone with you all day, but you you can't use that. and then at the end of the day or as are leaving the concert, you go by one of our are are many machines and you put your phone in their it unlocks the bag and then you can take your phone out. got so they can have their phones are just like locked in these these backs. >>pushback that. >>i'm sure you're hearing and then we're hearing from parents and kids is that they're kind of concerned about safety in case of an emergency. what? that
11:46 pm
criticism. yeah. yeah. so that of course, has been in our in our plans. and as we as we met with students and as we met with parents. >>we share that every single teacher on campus. as one of the magnets that will quickly unlock the back. and so if there was a situation where students had to lock down in the classroom or a space, then you have a teacher and there that could unlock the bags within within minutes or if we had to evacuate students every teacher evacuating will have one of these locks and we can unlock the back so that students can call their parents or text their parents. >>so that that will work in case an emergency. i'm >>it's not electronic or anything. it's just a just a magnet. okay. do you think kids might try to like? bustin and hackett break it? if they break their bag? then they're on the hook for $50. and so so
11:47 pm
so it absolute emergency. they more than likely could probably get the phone out of the back. >>but and just everyday use the bags are pretty sturdy in and they can get through the wear and tear. and we actually, you know, we we've actually done this for the last year and a to of our smaller. continuation, high schools. and it's been quite successful. and we've actually got positive feedback from our students and for our families and staff and much of the data around in terms engagement in terms of student conflicts have have engagement has gone up in conflicts have gone way down at the schools that have already implemented this. i think that's what you're looking for. >>what do say to parents and kids as they're getting ready for school? and, you know, some sometimes change can be a little difficult and separating from phones can also produce a little bit of anxiety. >>when i went to a comedy concert and i had to put my phone and one of these bags for maybe the first 15 minutes. i was a little
11:48 pm
unsure, but i really did enjoy the enjoy the concert night and i laughed and had a good time. and the students that that have gone through this for for the last year or they really have reported back that they have met people on campus that they that, you know, that they've never met before. and students are just talked about how this really does impact the climate. all really want to do is just created a safe and welcoming environment and we want our students to have the best opportunity to be successful. i was out visiting schools today and i saw that in action. and so again, this is not a this you know, we have we have 5 comprehensive high schools and to alternative schools in our district. we you know, over 10 to 10 middle schools. and so this is only happening at 4 of our schools. and it's somewhat of a pilot program just to see if we can really the benefits of having our students pulling good. yeah, we'll see what happens. what it's like to be cell phone, free. >>all day clark, thank you so

is exactly 1.8 miles from the location where an 11 year-old boy was hit and killed on tuesday afternoon. this is camden avenue pg e crews here. they have to put down a new power pole. let me show you video from a little bit earlier this morning. this is around 07:20am, in the morning when they finally remove the car that caused all of this mask. you can see the front end damage to the blue car right there. this is at the intersection of kooser road and camden. this is a t intersection, meaning you can only make a left or right. but instead the driver goes straight ahead. no skid marks whatsoever. so full speed ahead into the power pole. fortunately, it is a poll that helps keep up the lines and it's not exactly a power pole that south. it's part of the structure, the infrastructure, power lines. so no lines were

>>both former president trump and vice president harris have officially agreed to a september 10th debate. according to abc, this sets up a faceoff between the republican and democratic nominees. for more on this kron four's grant lodes and vicki liviakis spoke with david mckeown, a political science professor at sonoma state university. >>thanks for being with us.
12:03 am
who needs this debate more? >>but when you're in the debate, you're out of the debate. you're in the debate. you're out of the debate when the race is fundamentally changed and now you're committing to 3 debates. that's clearly a worry that the trump campaign has about where they're at now and where they are moving forward. so this is still a toss-up race. it will be a after labor day, but nonetheless trump and his team, they feel like they've lost some mojo. they've lost some big mo and in losing momentum. they want to get that back. and that's why they're pushing for multiple debates. >>what do you think we can the one with biden and trump was clearly not working for biden. are we going to see the same trump? and how is he going to adjust in dealing with kamala harris? >>all right. thank look how many 78 year-old man can you teach new tricks? right? so we know, we know what we get with trump. so trump is going to be regardless of the unity component. but nonetheless, what you should expect this to see at least 2 presidential
12:04 am
debates and one vice presidential debate. maybe you get to 3 the timeline on 3rd one might be difficult, but you should we should expect at least 2 and those 2 debates could be one per the abc you know, the fact lack of an audience, a similar to what we saw in the first debate that when joe biden just imploded nonetheless, we would see that type of debate and then different format. the different format might have several it might even have a bit of an audience. so expect at least 2 stylistically, different in the presidential season again after labor day and possibly a 3rd and one vice presidential debate because of the lineup because of how the race is fundamentally change that we often talk about. these would become must-watch television event. so in that sense, we often think that the bates don't move the needle. we think these debates will move the needle for the 5. people are undecided. this particular election and the 5 people ok? so we've seen trump and harris debate quite a bit. not so much with.
12:05 am
>>vance and walls. how would you handicap the 2 debates? >>so this is what watches as we move closer to like a vice presidential debate. let's assume that one of those happened. the expectations for governor waltz are going to be really sky high, right, that that kind of every dad midwestern a the kind of jobs that are polite, but they come at you. and then an underperformance by jt manse. >>because he's not sure who he is. this is how it will be played. so they'll be under expectations will lower the the underperformance by jd vance and then the the kamala harris. people want to lower the expectations for wants. so we're going to be in this process of lowering expectations for these 2. go at it. it will be very interesting because they have start contrast, even though their boat veterans, for example, so democrats by selecting walls are not giving up on the veteran vote. and obviously the veterans vote has been hugely important for donald trump in the past with recent republican elections.
12:06 am
nonetheless, we expect this place to be right at a race that's virtual tie. perhaps kamala harris is a little bit ahead after a convention bump headed into labor day. and it's so makes the debates in the spending and the events that happened in the response by all the candidates moving forward. hugely important. the other component to this is you also don't want jd vance kind of following around a different vice president running for president governor waltz seat. you want report you want to push forward a new message and what is that message look like the trump team is trying to get ahead of that and they're not sure what that looks like even though and very professional people who know how they want to attack vice president kamala harris and tim was they just haven't gotten there yet. so they're rebooting their political as we see developing today and moving forward. well, it looks like we're going to see a lot more personality attacks and as opposed to policy. we saw that a little earlier today. >>donald trump held his press conference at mar-a-lago. and i i have to mention this is
12:07 am
yeah. it was at the top of our newscast and it it's local locally where he said that he donald trump said that mayor brown was with him on a helicopter that almost crashed and that mayor brown had bad things or unpleasant things to say about kamala harris. we're going to see more of that kind of. nastiness. yeah, i mean, there's going to be a lot of demonization of who these 2 people are in the democratic ticket that's going to be in the near term. >>if you're a political professional operating in trump world. and yes, there are some of them what they saw today and rolling out their their candidate and that press conference just a dog's breakfast. it was not a good look. and if you're going to keep going personal here, while the other side is talking about joy and optimism, that something it's really difficult to combat. so they're going to have to make a change. but can you do that
12:08 am
with your principal guy who often speaks to the personal and and the attack politics and that provides a direct contrast and that will turn some voters off so the beehive voters and the swifties, for example, those 18 to 34 that are part of the beyonce and the taylor swift kind of contingent. they're going to turn off from that and they're going to move. and in sizable numbers to kamala harris and walz. and that could be a problem because they become a critical voting block, even though not a lot of the vote when they do switch, they make a big difference. that will be something to watch in terms of popular culture and how these attacks kind of a work moving forward because right now they're going to fall deaf ears. okay. fascinating dynamics. david mcewan, thank you very much. the chair of the sonoma state political science department.
