>>now from kron 4, the bay area's local news station. >>thanks for joining us. you're watching kron-on live on air and online. i'm stephanie rothman. a tragedy in the north bay to women and their dogs were killed in early morning fire in vallejo kron four's sara stinson spoke with neighbors who say they're devastated by this sudden loss. >>people who live in this neighborhood are sadden by the deadly fire. many saying they're in shock. the

neighbors. they saw nearly every day are now gone. >>only by 2. >>cell phone video capturing massive flames roaring out of a vallejo home on depaul drive just before 3 monday morning. cortez dammer on says this is what he saw after he woke up tsmell of smoke. came out like know is like no one knew it was on fire was crazy. i was like dang. no one hears this. cameron says he tried to put out the fire with a garden hose while his step son called 9-1-1. he also tried calling his neighbors who live in the house. that was on fire. >>i don't we don't know nothing. i tried call on the phone or straight to voicemail. fire crews arrived and started searching for people inside the home. one woman died on scene. another woman was pulled out of the house by she was like still kind of like walking. you know, she kind of collapse right here. so they had lived, brought the gurney. so i put on a gurney say was like they

try to bring it back to life. the woman was taken to the hospital where she later died. damron says he was heartbroken when he found out. i was like family to me. me next door. neighbors and seager modest. that's all i needed to know. so they were pleasant. like i'd wait them to a particular was crazy. like every time drove past a they waved 2 dogs also died in the fire. firefighters got the flames under control within 30 minutes in stopped it from spreading to nearby homes. >>windows and doors have since been boarded up. cameron says word has spread throughout the tight-knit neighborhood. they were good people the whole neighborhood is sad about this. like for sure. people be reaching neighbors. >>we everybody knows them. basically. >>the cause of the fire is still under investigation. it's unclear if there was working smoke detectors inside the home. cameron says he'll surely be checking his after this. i'm sara stinson reporting in vallejo kron. 4 news.

>>over in the south bay, protests continue over changes happening at the only trauma center in east side. san jose today regional medical center reduce its service is taking a from a level 2 trauma center to a level 3 kron. 4 jack molmud explains why doctors and community advocates say this will threaten those who suffer from strokes and heart attacks. >>today the owners of regional medical center here in east side, san jose say they have successfully lowered the services in its trauma center, bringing it down from a level 2 trauma center to a level 3, but around 2 dozen eastside, san jose residents showed up here to good samaritan hospital in west side, san jose to call out the investments, made it into the richer and whiter neighborhoods here on the side of town at leaving out the more diverse areas of the east side. san jose behind marching to the ceo of hca to please compassion in his heart.

doing an overall equity assessment to determine the feasibility of keeping it there in the way that it is. we asked hca healthcare to respond to the concerns of residents about the reduction in services and they sent us a statement about keeping the trauma center open, including plans to raise the number of emergency room beds by 20. but here's the thing. >>our community is organized. we've done our research. we're going to continue on this >>because all communities deserve to have full access to health care. >>and the people protesting here at good samaritan left behind these candles. they tell us to serve as a demonstration to remind people that their fight to preserve services in east side. san jose will not go away. and they also plan to host town halls to residents there in the east side informed of any possible changes going forward. reporting in san jose jack moment. kron 4 news. >>well, hotel workers in san jose will vote on a possible strike tomorrow. it comes months after unsuccessful

negotiations with major hotel chains like hilton area and the hyatt hotel workers are asking for raises better workloads and protections for work at get associated with guest services and amenities contracts expired last month. and now if approved the union representing more than 600 san jose hotel workers could call strikes at any time. and tonight san jose police are looking for suspect they believe shot and killed a man on sunday. it happened at a business on mclaughlin avenue near the 2.80, on-ramp police say they found the victim with the least one gunshot wound. he was later taken to the hospital where he died. police say the suspects ran away before they arrived. an investigation is ongoing. if you have any information related to the suspect, you're asked to call police. and police are investigating after a body was found over the weekend in golden gate park near the outside lands festival francisco. the body was found near the handball courts just after one

yesterday afternoon. this is about a mile away from the music fest. it's not clear if the man had attended outside lands and the cause of the death is unknown at this time. but san francisco police say there are no signs of foul play. we will bring you updates, of course, as they are released. and it was a chilly weekend for those at outside lands. but looking ahead to the rest of the week, what should you expect? here's kyle for chief meteorologist lawrence karnow lard. >>out there right now, skies are mostly clear. but look at that. it's hazy out there right now. we have seen some of the plumes kind of building up in the atmosphere under high pressure. you can couple are still in the yellow there in the north bay into oakland. also part of the east bay looking at some of yellow conditions right now. that means some moderate amounts of fluid building up some haze out there right now. i improving conditions, though, going forward. here's your smoke forecast and use. you can see we've been really fortunate for most of fires. we've got numerous fires, get the park fire to the north. you've got the other fires burning around the state right now. any change that wind

election headquarters. vice president kamala harris held a big fundraiser in san francisco this weekend. her campaign says she raised millions of dollars, but her visit was met with protests. kron four's michael thomas gives us a recap of the events. >>this fundraising event at the fairmont hotel brought in more than 13 million dollars for vice president kamala harris and her presidential campaign. not only where there are tons of supporters outside the hotel, but there were also some pro-palestinian protesters demanding a ceasefire. vice president kamala harris land in the bay area saturday night after a campaign stop in nevada. these are photos of her being greeted by city officials. >>her running mate, minnesota governor tim walz did not attend this event but a close ties to the bay area did bring in 100 cameras were not allowed inside the hotel. the big democratic names like governor gavin newsom, former

back and forth. there's that camry, reversing a lot of people are choosing leave this area because they think it's just a matter of time. reportedly the deadline was yesterday. now it looks like they're laying down the tracks to get these people to move from this location, which the city of san francisco, they say, told them to move here couple weeks ago. let me show you video just to give you a little bit closer to the scene at its height, about 60 rv's were here, but started moving over the weekend. they actually were a mile away from this location near san francisco state. but the city told them after a couple years at the other location, they should move to zoom road and all of a sudden now they're being forced to move once again. we got a chance to talk to one person who lives inside the rv. here's what she had to say through a translator. >>and you see that he was offered something bush. they tell her that she had 2 living

full enjoy or of the 35th annual jazz fest in san jose. there's one big prerequisite. first of all, you have to be the jazz which i am. i grew up in detroit and we love jazz and r b. jazz, you know, it's hard to find really good this is a real jazz musician while we're there, the headliner, herbie hancock from los angeles around the world. this just superstar has played with jazz greats throughout the decades like miles davis. he's also won. 4 grammys pretty good. he's like he's international artist. thousands of people here for the second day of the jazz festival. many of them saying it's the first time back since the pandemic like karl babcock is here with his family and says this is one of the only times you can catch this many jazz musicians this close to home. >>in the same place, goodness it also comes at a break in the south bay heat throughout

>>soccer fans get excited in the east bay. professional soccer is returning to the oakland coliseum next year. kron 4 charles clifford has more. >>with this being the final season for the oakland a's here at the coliseum. the city of oakland, alameda county and the coliseum's new incoming scg are looking for ways to keep the coliseum in houston. today we learned that professional soccer is returning to oakland. >>the oakland roots are coming to coliseum. the oakland roots announced on monday that the team will play its 2025 season here at the oakland coliseum. the team has signed a 3 million dollar lease with the city of oakland and alameda county to play a total of 17 home games here for the past 2 seasons, the roots been playing home matches at cal state east bay. >>we are so excited that our fans will now get to bring our uniquely passionate divers and inclusive routes, gameday experience to the coliseum. >>having the team play here at the coliseum will also create jobs and keep the facility in

>>a push is under way at the state capitol. it's to advance a bill giving prosecutors more time to charge someone accused of domestic violence. state law allows prosecutors to file charges up to 5 years after an alleged domestic violence incident has taken place. but the new proposal would extend that time frame by several years. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace spoke with the lawmaker behind the bill and we want to warn you, viewers might find some parts of this story. disturbing. >>we hear you. we believe you and we will not stop fighting for you. that's the message states. senator susan rubio baldwin park says she sending with her bill sb 690. >>if signed into law, the legislation would extend the statute of limitations in domestic violence cases, giving prosecutors more time to charge domestic violence

suspects as it stands today. state law allows prosecutors to charge someone up to 5 years after an alleged domestc violence incident took place. but should that be 6.90, be signed? prosecutors will be allowed to charge someone up to 15 years after that incident. rubio says that's significant because it will give victims more time to come forward. they need more time. we need to be patient. we need to listen to victims and we need to understand that they decide for themselves when it's survivor herself. rubio says this issue is especially important to she was the state senator behind the 2019 law that increased the domestic violence statute of limitations to its current 5 years. but she says after meeting with countless survivors, she believes 5 years is not enough. she also says this recently released video showing music mogul sean diddy combs punching him, kicking his ex-girlfriend 2016 makes it clear why survivors are afraid to speak out. combs apologized after the video was released. i make no excuses.

>>a view on that video excuse. but as california law stands today because combs incident took place more than 5 years ago. >>the statute of limitations has now expired meaning too much time already passed to file charges. this statute of limitations. actress s may bianco from the game of thrones series was one of several survivors who came to the capital to support the bill. she says victims are often threatened by their abusers and then too afraid to leave their abusive relationship. we know that on average it takes a victim, 7 attempts to actually even you really can't understand unless you have survived this, which is why it's so important survive casing for this kind of change. the bill already received bipartisan support from the state senate. >>but the proposal does face opposition from the california public defenders association who wrote this in part, quote, the extension of the statute of limitations will result in the conviction of innocent people is bad public policy and way scarce resources that could be better spent on evidence-based and effective strategies to end domestic

violence will disagrees. that's billy victims. they don't want you to debate they wanted in this and my goal now is to fight for victims out there that need me to fight for them. and i will not give up until this last past. >>and to be clear, this bill is not retroactive, meaning it will apply only to incidents that take place after the bill becomes law. and next heads to the assembly appropriations committee later this week reporting at the state tom wallace kron 4 news. >>the san francisco fire department battled 2 grass fires this afternoon. almost 30 firefighters had to respond to the emergencies just blocks away from each other. kron four's lezla gooden shares. what we know so far. >>on monday at 01:00pm, the san francisco fire department got a call to deal with this 10 acre grass fire off of armstrong avenue. they had workers and heavy equipment such as backhoes. >>in tractors that are doing some work in area. the cause, the spark during that

oakland unified school district to welcome students and faculty back to school on monday. but security has been top of mind for many parents and staff after shooting during a graduation ceremony at the end of last school year. kron 4.70, justice spoke with district leaders about what they're doing to keep everyone safe. >>the safety of our students and staff. all of our schools is top priority for the district. it's back-to-school time and the oakland unified school district starting the 2024 25 school year off on monday. school safety a top of mind for parents and faculty

and the school district telling kron 4 there are new security cameras and systems in place to keep those on campus safe. >>this year that involves things like a new visitor management system makes sure that checking people improperly when they come campus it's a crisis go which is a system that we use to alert staff when something's happening. we have kind of standardized procedure for getting new radio systems, make sure that all the radio systems work the way need to so people in the camps is can communicate with each other tennessee, a source says is making sure that that everything is safe here on campus of red heart and all the other schools across the district, the enhanced security coming after a few incidents last school year. 3 juveniles were arrested in connection with the shooting at skyline high school last september. >>thankfully no one was hurt. and in may, there was a shooting at skyline during a graduation ceremony. opd says 3 people were hurt and one person was arrested. >>something nobody wanted to see. and one of the things
