eyes on a growing bush brush fire in the south bay video from the citizens app shows smoke and flames growing in the hills above homes in east san jose. fire officials say it actually started as 3 separate fires that have now collectively burned. 35 acres. the flames for spark shortly before 8 this evening near quimby road. there haven't been any reported injuries or damages so far. san jose santa clara county fire and cal fire crews are all responding to this. chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is here with the latest weather conditions. as we look in the area, lawrence. >>all right. now the winds not all that strong in and around that fire, but still an active fire and some dry grass out there and some trees to burn and homes not far away. pretty scary. you can see this in the eastern half of a san jose up in the mountains there. you can see the fire now burning in that area. so we've got a mountainous terrain and some of those winds begin to pick up a move toward the south. so you're getting that northerly

investigators are looking into 2 separate deadly crashes that occurred in the same day. the most recent one happening last night at the intersection of snell and capitol expressway. police say a woman was in the crosswalk when she was hit by a car. she was taken to the hospital where she later died. police say the driver is cooperating with the investigation. and yesterday morning, a man riding a bicycle was also hit and killed this time by a pickup truck near jackson avenue and beyond the lane in east san jose. police say the driver is also cooperating with the authorities. it's unclear if either driver of in these situations will face any charges or if they were under the influence. one of the democratic national convention has just wrapped up and it was one for the books. democrats look to start off strong with their message to americans. speakers included former secretary of state hillary clinton and the keynote address from president biden. washington correspondent basil john joins us from united center in chicago with the highlights.

>>the education department announced availability of the federal student aid application form would be delayed for a second year in a row. instead, the known as the free application for federal student aid or fafsa will go live for testing with a limited set of students and institutions in october to iron out issues before launching fully on december. first for the 2025 2026 academic year, california students are already feeling the sting of this adjustment to break it all down. kron four's justine waltman spoke with emmanuel rodriguez, recent rch director at the institute for college access and success. >>so the question that we wanted to start off with first here is what is actually happening with this application form. why is there such a delay?

accused of killing his girlfriend who went missing more than a week ago was back i court today. he faces murder and identity theft charges tied to her disappearance. reporter clodagh stefani and has the details from roseville. >>good evening. this agreement has been continued until september 9th. we did not hear an official plea from brent clifford, but all of this is we received an official identification on that body that was found in nevada with washoe county medical examiner's office are confirming that the body found is indeed the body of missing placer county woman. patricia part. hello, right. the washoe county medical examiner's office says patel right died from multiple sharp force injuries telling a sharp force injuries are caused by objects was sharper point edges like knives, scissors or glass. this as the murder suspect in her disappearance, brent clifford appeared in court in an orange jumpsuit standing motionless as the judge laid out the charges against him.

clifford is accused of killing placer county woman patricia portella-wright was reported missing on august 9th when she didn't come into work. 2 days later, placer county sheriff's deputies determine clifford to be a person of interest in her disappearance. and in a separate homicide out of reno, he would later be named a suspect in the reno homicide investigation with authorities believing clifford took off in the victim's red chevy suv. the placer county sheriff's office tells us clifford withdrew more than $900 in placer county using part. heller writes personal information leading to a warrant for his arrest. that would later happen in portola. the judge has set both cases that no bail and the rain has been continued until september 9th. and right now all of this is going on as they continue to investigate that homicide out in reno. reno police telling me that brent clifford and the victim knew each other and that the shooting happened at the victim's household. right now, clifford has not been arrested on any charges in connection with the homicide at this time reporting from roseville covering local news that

election headquarters was just more than 2 months until election day. the debate is heating up over a ballot measure seeking to increase penalties for retail thies and fentanyl. drug dealers. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace spoke with supporters and opponents of prop 36. retail theft open drug use.

>>and a statewide deadly fentanyl epidemic. they're all issues facing the state. but the question now, how best to respond? this bipartisan group of district attorneys and this group of some democratic mayors have been campaigning the summer in favor of what they believe is a major part of the solution. prop 36, if passed by voters this november. 36 will reform prop 47. that's the 2014 voter approved a law that change certain nonviolent crimes from felonies to misdemeanors and loosened penalties for offenses like retail theft. when the items stolen are valued at less than $950. supporters say prop 47 resulted in criminal justice reform and reduced california's prison population. but opponents argue it let criminals off the hook. someone can steal. >>$900 any given store and not be held accountable. i say that is unacceptable. so this is about accountability, specifically prop 36 will
