headquarters. the presidential race has been completely transform just over the last 6 weeks as former president donald trump and vice president harris focus on key battleground states. newsnation poll has just been released. kron four's catherine heenan has more details. the bottom line, i guess newsnation says. >>kamala harris has a 55% chance of winning the election. not a big margin, especially when you consider how volatile this race has been. the fact that some very big events are still coming up, including harris's first televised sit-down interview. that's coming up on cnn thursday. and of course, the september harris, trump debate. conventions behind us. new polls continue to come and go but >>here's the latest snapshot of the race. according to news nation, its new poll says harris is making big strides for democrats in swing states, pennsylvania, wisconsin and michigan. a bump of 10, 16 14%
12:44 am
respectively. former president trump has events planned in all 3 states referred to as the blue wall. we're just weeks ago. he was the favorite candidate. he's hoping to shore up support in those must-win states were the race could ultimately be decided? is running mate. jd vance was in michigan today and this week the harris team will campaign in georgia where she's trailing president trump by about 3 points. the news nation poll shows that georgia is the only battleground state where harris did not improve president biden's numbers and facts. she dropped 3 percentage points in battleground state. north carolina harris has given democrats a 5% jump leading president trump by about 3 points in nevada. trump holds a one-point lead, although harris did gain 5 points from where biden was polling.
12:45 am
arizona is the closest toss up state. harrison trump are virtually tied. the poles leaning slightly to trump. as for congress, the post says republicans are still expected to flip the senate. a 67% chance. in fact, but that is down from when biden was at the top of the ticket. when post said the gop had a 78% chance. and as for chances, republicans will gain a bigger house majority. it's up for grabs. the post says there is a 55% chance the party will keep its house majority opposed to 61%. when joe biden dropped out. so how much does that poll mean? keep in mind, an awful lot of people really don't trust polls much these days. >>think about 2016, 2020, for example. and again, one big events like the upcoming debate or thursday's cnn interview with harris and could change everything. back to you.

>>with tons to talk about in the world of politics these days, kron four's grant lotus and vicki liviakis spoke with san jose state political science lecturer donna crane. t post-convention situation. you got the debate coming up with the microphone. so you got the interview now on thursday. what stands out to you is sort of the most consequential thing that's happened in the past couple days. >>first, i have to say this is kind of like a gourmet buffet for those of us who work in this field because we're getting to watch a presidential election really compressed time frame. so, you know, it's like it's like major things happened a couple every week these days. you know, i would say the 2 biggest events that i'm looking forward to and they'll be watching most closely are probably they harris walz interview on cnn. and then, of course, the debate coming in december between trump.
12:47 am
>>okay. talk about the debate. it's mike hot mic or no. mike, where do you think that's going to land? >>it looks like it's probably going to land on the original rules, which is no and i think harris's campaign was pushing for, i guess we call it hot mic or open mic because they're making it. they made a calculation that it would be uncharacteristically president trump restrain himself that he would actually sort of show that he and disciplined and maybe even bullying is as many people observed during the 2016 debates with hillary clinton. so i think there's campaign thought that would that would advantage for more than when you think each approach will be trump and harris going into the debate and you think that >>each will be able to achieve their goals. >>i mean, that's a that's a giant question just have to
12:48 am
look a quarter of it, which is that i think this will be one of the first chances that kamala harris and in the case, a cnn interview, tim walz also will have really discuss just, you know, specific policy issues, right? the bear, the details around exact policies. so far there's been sort of a lot of ceremony and pomp and circumstance and drama around the change from biden to harris. but, you know, she also needs to explain in some detail what she plant. you know, what her platform would she has had much of an opportunity or should we say taken much of an opportunity to do that. so these 2 are these 2 events will be really essential opportunities for those to happen. and she could do really well or she could, you know, she could pick some unforced errors. >>so do you think it's unusual that her first a network sit-down interview is not so low, but is also with her vice president.
12:49 am
>>personally attribute that to the compressed timeline. usually this would happen in a much more relaxed fashion. there would be multiple interviews, but they have to crunch everything together because there's just, you know, double digit days, which is pretty unusual, might sense. also, is the harris-walz campaign sees the 2 of them together as unattractive package that they that they cover sort each other's weak spots on the resume and that they make sense put them together because they i think they believe people will find something they like in one or both of we still have the indictment to get to with trump today. >>you talk about potpourri of things happening first, though, i wanted to get your take on this today. 200 or so. >>former bush mccain and romney staffers came out in an open letter and they wrote, of course, we have plenty of honest ideological disagreements with vice president harris and governor walz. that's to be expected.
12:50 am
>>but the alternative is simply untenable. and they are saying they're voting for harris. does that matter? >>you know something similar happened with national security officials in the 2016 election. they came out and said we are republicans but we endorse hillary clinton and it wasn't effective really at all. it might even have backfired in the sense that trump supporters look at that and said, aha, there's a big conspiracy inside the government, the so-called deep state that's working against them because it's going to shake things up. you know, whether that that would still be the reaction and a potential second trump term. it's a little hard for me to know but what it might do is it might wobble enough donors and other sort of party leaders and institutional lists. i don't know that it would pull them off of trump, but it might cause them to i don't know. maybe just a little bit less enthusiastic in their turnout over there, their financial efforts to
12:51 am
support the trump campaign. that's that's part of the the most consequence i can see from that. all right. very quickly. and i know this is so complex and people were talking about it today. but the scale down. >>indictment on social media. donald trump posted smith was trying to resurrect a dead witch hunt. your response? >>you know, i thought it was a smart and i would have expected it. so what he's done is he's already written the indictment because the supreme court said, hey, the last one, we don't think it's so good. we the supreme court said, you know, we give the president wide latitude to be free from prosecution for actions he commits while he's president. so jack smith just rewrote it. just that to be very explicit that he's going after the actions trump committed as a candidate, that there really is no role for a president in the peaceful transition the handover of power. suppose i should say.
