celebrating the release of an orange county pastor who's been imprisoned in china for nearly 2 decades. now, the state department says 68 year-old david lane was wrongfully detained in china in 2006. he was originally sentenced to life in prison. now reporter chip yost has the latest details on his release.
11:53 pm
>>hello, according to numerous reports, this pastor has ties to a church here in garden grove. and according to his supporters, he has been held in a chinese prison for years because of his religious beliefs. but now he's back on u.s. soil. >>we welcomed a bee lands release from prison in the people's republic of china. he has returned to the united states and reunited with his family for the first time in nearly 20 years. the u.s. state department briefing monday, a department spokesperson acknowledged that orange county pastor david lynn has been released from a chinese prison according to the washington post and others. >>lynn was first detained in 2006 for his involvement in the house church movement in china and in 2009 was sentenced to life in prison in 2019, the u.s. commission on international religious freedom adopted land as part of its religious prisoners of

conscience project saying at the time that before his imprisonment, pastor lynn was active in beijing's house church movement, which has long faced hostility from chinese authorities. house churches are independent of state-sponsored religious organizations and those who participate in and lead house churches often face intimidation, harassment arrest and harsh sentences. although the commission said lynn sentence was reduced to a term that could see him released by 2030. the state department says secretary of state antony blinken and others have continued to push chinese officials for his immediate release. however, now that he is back on u.s. soil, the state department spokesperson would not reveal what led to the chinese government's decision to let him go. are you able rule out that there was no swap?

>>kron four's your local election headquarters with election day. just 49 days away. now, many americans are wondering whether this apparent assassination attempt could impact the polls. for more on how this could play out in the presidential race. kron four's justine waltman spoke with professor a pinnacle science and menlo college. melissa michelson. so
12:01 am
let's just talk about this attempted assassination and how you think it's going to play out politically, even just in today's news cycle and how that will impact, how people decide to vote. >>well, i think stirs up enthusiasm among trump's space. so if you >>maybe were wavering, maybe were questioning whether you are still excited for trump or whether you are even gonna vote for him because of some bad news that bin coming out when your candidate is attacked. it, he's gonna make you then come back to that candidate, right? so it's going to make you. we determined more determined to make sure like i'm not gonna let them stop trump. i'm going to come out and vote for him. i'm going send him some money. and so it's beneficial to the trump campaign in a way. not anybody wants to be the subject of an assassination attempt, but it is likely to build up enthusiasm among his voters and especially among folks who may be or
12:02 am
questioning whether they were going to come out and vote for him and after what happened to him in july, people were so sympathetic towards he actually >>was shot. there was an attempt on his life bleeding on his ear and they the republicans turn that into some momentum going into the republican national convention and people died at that rally. they had the uniform of the firefighter who ended up passing away with became a very emotional time for the republican party. >>yeah, exactly. and obviously this isn't quite as dramatic unlikely this time nobody was hurt and they were able to take out the attempted assassin before he was able to shoot anybody. but it reminds people of how they felt in that earlier attempt and again makes people more excited for trump. and i'm sure that his campaign is is sending out messages, reminding them that, you know, he's being attacked, claiming people are trying to stop him from being that the president again. and so that's
12:03 am
sort of messaging is helpful to his campaign. representative elise stefanik said that the nation now has an obligation to vote for him. >>based on these 2 attempts on his life. so there's that sort of call there to do if you want to do the best for your nation. this is who your candidate should be. >>right. well, i don't know that this assassination attempt are either assassination attempt is going to change people's minds. if you were planning on voting for kamala harris, if you are planning on voting for a third-party candidate, you're unlikely to switch your preference to donald trump because of this. so again, i would say it's more about people who already were planning to vote for him. course, elise stefanik has been trump supporter for some but it's not probably not going to change people's minds. >>it did change trump's instagram following after the previous assassination attempt that he survived. he gained a million instagram followers which then gives him you would think a million more eyeballs
12:04 am
on his messaging on his campaign on his platform on his merch that he's trying to sell. so there it is an impact there as to where the attention goes. >>absolutely. and that's probably good friends fundraising as well. no doubt that assassination attempt brings attention builds up. people determined to support you, right? so it definitely does have an effect on the campaign, but i don't know that it has an effect on. on people's preferences. so again, i think energizes people who are already leaning toward trump and maybe pushes them to be more determined to vote for trump if they were perhaps wavering. so it could have a small effect there. know, it's going to be pretty marginal because a lot of people already have made up their minds about trump already made up their minds about the various candidates. and and so i think any effect is going to be pretty small. >>and what's the impact on the harris campaign on the other side?
12:05 am
>>well, campaign has got to again come out and talk about how we don't want to see this kind of violence is is coming out and saying we don't want anybody to be the victim of of this sort of behavior and i think it's it doesn't really have much of an effect on the harris campaign besides forcing them to come out and make a stand in and brings attention to the kind of people who are saying. island, are who perpetuating or encouraging violence in other situations. and so it just brings back this cycle of conversations about political violence and political science research has shown that it's up to the leaders to say we don't want to see this sort of violence. we don't want assassin's deciding our political futures. and so it's really important. harris campaign for the trump campaign for for all thought leaders out there to say, please stop this, please don't do this. this is not how we do politics in the united states. and so it just forces the harris campaign to be part of that. and and they should be.
12:06 am
>>and harris came out and said that violence had no place in america. and that was the same message from last time. and we'll see how this. especially wants. trump comes out and speaks again. i want to talk to you again and hear how what you think of his response will check back later thank you, mark. >>more news a south bay busines
