tonight. hurricane milton has made landfall as a category 3 storm. >>but now it's a category one hurricane. but unfortunately, the damage is already done in st. petersburg panels fell off of roofs of the tropicana field. a crane collapsed onto an office building and across the state, millions of people are without power and the death toll has begun to climb. no word yet on the exact number. but bay area, first responders are on their way to help with the recovery efforts. as milton continues to ri through the state. we're taking a live look now at tampa, florida. this shot courtesy of our sister station wfla in tampa. kron 4 chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is tracking the conditions there in the area. lawrence. >>that major hurricane coming

on shore late this afternoon early this evening. and it's a massive storm. so even though it's come onshore, it is far from finished. see all the red here. that's all the intensity that storm moving on through being picked up on the doppler radar. you can see that band rolling on in the eye just coming onshore south of the tampa area near sarasota and that bringing with it, those ferocious winds right around that eye. we're talking about 120 mile an hour winds with that. i coming on shore. of course, we've seen some of that damage in st. petersburg, but they're far from finished. yeah, we're getting reports of more damage all around. we talked about the tornadoes and there they are popping up all on the east coast. not even along the west coast where they're having trouble there with those all the weather coming on shore. it was the east coast. this a lot of the tornadoes today on the other side, though they're dealing with that storm surge. and boy, it's been terrible, but tornadoes causing all kind damage to this moving through, causing some damage there near i-95 people being reporting some trees down. a lot of damage reported across the

state this coming on shore at night. tomorrow morning. we'll wake up. we're expecting some devastation will have more on that. some impressive rain falling out there to tonight. >>hundreds of emergency first responders from california are heading to florida tonight to help with hurricane milton's response. governor newsom announced his office is sending more than 350st responders. some of them right here from the bay area. kron 4 sarah stinson has more on who's being deployed and how they will be helping. >>bay area first responders are sending in highly skilled firefighters, engineers, law enforcement and search dogs to florida. their main mission would be to help with rescue and recovery efforts. >>as hurricane milton moves across florida, it's slamming the state with torrential rains, punishing winds and flooding. >>and bay area, first responders are on their way to help as a part of the california task force 3. it's what we >>all train to do and we want do our part to help out are

fellow americans and fellow citizens. the sunnyvale department of public safety is sending 2 tenants and one officer and they just arrived in florida. they're currently base in the pensacola area >>from there, they'll be receiving their first assignments. we hope that they're going to be safe while they're out there. crews with the menlo park fire department left on sunday to assist with water rescues being able to provide whatever life rescues we can provide. and that's going to be into different aspects. one is in water and to a structure collapse or compromised. san francisco fire sending 3 rescue dogs and their handlers for recovery once the water settles in this case, they're going to be looking for people. >>and people who either are >>unable to walk, unable to leave wherever they have been or are underneath the rubble pile will need to be found. so

legacy mexican fast food spot in san francisco's mission district is reeling after back-to-back break-ins. thieves broke into alfaro restaurant saturday morning through the front door. police responded around 07:00am but found no suspects. there. they say a key and other property was stolen. and the next day officers responded to a report of another burglary. there. according to a gofundme page set up by a relative of the owner, the family owned restaurant suffering more than $20,000 in loss and damages and the owner of base camp, a restaurant across the street says burglaries continue to be on the rise as she's just worried. her business is going to be next. >>just like sooner or later, it's going to hopefully not. don't keeping the cash or the restaurant anymore. and we just make sure doors are locked soon as the best customers out of here. it's been a little scary. what i'm hoping is just going to go away soon. >>we have a link to the gofundme page on our website. that's kron 4 dot com.

>>tonight we're learning more about the difficult situation for young students in 13 san francisco schools, the buildings that could close at would be least as a way to generate money for a budget deficit set to be in the hundreds of millions. it's unclear when a decision will be made but talks are underway. and yesterday the san francisco unified school district announced all of the different schools that will either close or merge there on your screen. the superintendent tells us he understands the uncertainty and impending change is the kids and families. >>when i look at weight. but it looks like next year and what will happen with are small schools as some of these schools as education leader. i have to put out ideas like this to make sure we're providing a better experience for our students. so while it in the short term is very difficult, this is for the long-term success of san francisco unified in our students. and we know students are going to ask. we still see our friends. and so that's why we put out ideas that would allow friends to stay with friends when there's a merger

and picking the right jury will be crucial for them. opening statements are expected to begin in a matter of days. meantime, defense attorneys are looking to families ex-wife from attending the trial because she allegedly intimidating witnesses. and right outside the kron 4 studio. the ship is docked and service members are here. that's right. fleet week is here in san francisco kron four's charles clifford has the latest on day 3 and preparations for the blue angel show. >>well, here in san francisco on wednesday, fleet week is well underway. lots of people are checking out. the naval ships docked along the embarcadero and the air show. it's just a few days away. wednesday morning, the uss somerset currently docked at pier. 27 was opened for public tours. the somerset is a navy amphibious transport dock with a crew of around 700. the ship is one of several vessels visiting san francisco for fleet week. the amphibious assault ship uss tripoli is docked down the embarcadero at pier. 21 near the bay bridge tours are available for all of

the ships. you can also see these vessels when they enter san francisco bay for the parade of ships at 11 friday morning. along the marina green on the city's northern edge. wednesday, crews were setting up barriers and preparing for the fleet week. air show that kicks off on friday. this year's air show will include appearances by the u.s. navy's leapfrogs the air force's f 22 the coast guard and of course, the navy's blue angels. the airshow is held on friday saturday and sunday. weather permitting the blue angels will often do practice shows on wednesday or thursday. the airshow always attracts a large crowd and people we talked to on wednesday. we're excited. i love it. >>i love. i love the energy. i think it's so cool. i stand on the marina green starting on wednesday and watch. i love it. think it's incredible. anyone who wants more information about fleet week, including the times and dates for the tours of the ships can go to fleet week s f dot org or kron 4 dot com for details. now the weather forecast for the rest of the week is pretty good high in the mid 60's here

is on the way in the city of antioch this week, the city council approved up to a half a million dollars to fund extra police patrols. this comes as the city struggles with low police staffing and gang violence. kron four's philippe djegal reports the patrols will come from outside agencies. >>the antioch city council has authorized its new city manager bessie scott to enter into agreements with neighboring law enforcement agencies to help patrol city streets. was the council vote on it? it was world tired. officer is a dangerous officer. putting more boots on the ground. >>that may be necessary. however, don't want to overwork. >>our staff, the council's unanimous approval tuesday night allocate up to $500,000 to fund the violence reduction initiative. mayor lamar hernandez thorpe says outside officers will make $200 an

crime on bart has dropped and by double digits. compares the same time last year. our police released the numbers wednesday with overall crime being down by 15%. kron four's rob nesbitt spoke with the chief of police at barts about what's contributing to the drop. >>bart did a survey last year with riders and one of the biggest concerns was overall safety. since then, there's been more officers on patrol seems to be working. this data released wednesday by bart shows how much crimes have decreased the last year. violent crimes to the end of august, decreased by 10%. and overall crime is down by 15%. chief of police at bard kevin franklin says more officers on duty have helped contribute to that. about a year and a half ago. we really adjusted our

police deployment strategy to increase the presence of uniformed personnel system. and that's both are sworn police officers and our own armed civilians. chief franklin says there's been a huge drop in thefts of things like electronic devices. loss of life is always the biggest concern the last year. >>bart has experienced one homicide and that is an extremely rare occurrence and not something that you would expect to see bark. and we made a and arrests that very tight. every moment when that crime occurred, we were on scene minutes and made an arrest there. scenes like this have also played out at barts stops all over the bay area. it's why the bart police department has adjusted its approach to responding to people in crisis such as mental health and substance abuse issues. we have 20 full-time crisis intervention specialists who are trained mental health professionals who are out in the system trying to address people in crisis when it comes to ridership. bart has been working for 4 years to try to reach pre-pandemic numbers a

plane crash on catalina island kills 5 people. investigators are working to put together the events that led up to the crash and identify the adults who were on board. reporter alina abovian is following the investigation and has the latest from santa monica. >>good evening. that's right. we are learning new details about the victims, including the pilot. according to faa records, the plane was registered to a man by the name of elissa 5 from west hills. >>the planes registered owner is elissa fi. a former flight instructor seen here in archive photo online. so if i believed to be one of the people on board, according to people, ktla spoke with.

authorities haven't yet identified the victims but said they were all adults. they were on board a twin engine beechcraft 95 which crashed shortly after departed from catalina airport in avalon around 8 o'clock tuesday, the aircraft went down in rough terrain about a mile west of catalina airport. you can see that in an instagram video posted from the catalina island conservancy. according to flightaware flight tracking website, the beechcraft airplane took off from santa monica airport shortly before 06:00pm tuesday and arrived to catalina airport. about 20 minutes later around 08:00:08pm, and 9-1-1 s o s alert was sent from a cell phone belonging to one of the passengers. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. >>and in addition to mister ali sofi, ktla has independently identified a second victim. however, we are waiting for the coroner's office to notify next of kin. that is the very latest. i'm ellina abovian here in santa monica, ktla. 5

get in toward the weekend. well, i got a cold front that's going to be falling apart as it approaches the bay area. but bringing with it at least a slight chance of some showers late on friday night and early on saturday morning. all right. speaking changes, how about today? we watch those temperatures. drop a good 10, even 40 degrees cooler around parts of the bay area. now some passing clouds out there this evening and that onshore breeze continuing outside. and that's exactly what we want to see. if you want the cooler temperatures, kind of a flat ridge developing here. so that onshore wind carrying a nice cool marine air further and further on shore each day. but you see the winds. here's the forecast overnight. i little breezy in spots, especially near the coastline tomorrow morning. that onshore wind continues. that breeze. well, it will be picking up in the afternoon tomorrow and some of those winds over 20 miles an hour out along the coastline as we head toward tomorrow tomorrow afternoon. now temperatures for overnight lows, fantastic 40's and 50's. i mean, that is some good sleeping weather temperatures out there much cooler than what we've been experiencing highs you're looking at 66

degrees downtown san francisco. that'll be cool out along the coastline with some low 60's inside the bay of find some sunshine, some passing clouds and temperatures in the 60's make your way down the peninsula. turning in the 70's and a few 70's even a couple low 80's in the south bay by tomorrow afternoon. but 80 degrees in pleasanton. 79 in seminole as you make your way into oakland tomorrow about 69 degrees. 72 in 81 in fairfield, 73 degrees and lael back toward the coast. keep those temperatures cooler. but yeah, that's going to come the trend. we're going to see more clouds on the way the next couple days as temperatures drop it off. slight chance of a shower late on friday night into saturday. doesn't look like much best chance north of the golden gate bridge. >>and that doesn't here for us kron. 4 will be back with the morning news. starting at 5 o'clock. i'm stephanie rothman. thanks for watching.
