stephanie rothman. >>oceans are running gh in the south bay over the latest hool district's proposal to close several locations. >>the alum rock union school to close a 20 millon dollar budget deficit and parents, students and teachers all gather tonight at a board meeting to speak out against the plan. kron 4 sarah stinson joins us after talking with them about their concerns. >>a lot of emotions inside the packed board of trustees meeting. each person had one minute to speak during public comment. many walked away saying they still don't feel heard. >>these parents they're mad because the district's report is untrue. please keep lindale elementary open. thank you. >>parents, teachers, students and community members cheer each other on as they took turns speaking before the alum rock union school board trustees at a meeting thursday night. many expressing frustrations over the proposed

plan to close 7 schools consolidate to and redesign one. unfortunately, as you see, there's a lot of people coming out of their crime on november. 4th, the superintendent released a list of recommended schools that would close next year. the district says they're facing a 20 million dollar deficit due to declining enrollment. lower birth rate and end of temporary covid relief funding. we felt betrayed a really the best thing about the neighborhoods are the schools. and when yose the schools, it was the heart of the neighborhood. the district also plans to reduce staffing levels across the district. parents say it's going to cause a major upset within their families. my kids, you know, came home crying. it's that. >>and 6th grade where i'm going to graduate now he would have to be driving our kids to 2 different schools now and they are both on the opposite ends of the cityso we would not only have to find transportation. it's going to cost more money and time. rafael nieves has 2 kids at

town hall to discuss solutions. school officials say the hayward district is facing a continuing decline in enrollment due primarily to changing demographics and the high cost of living in the bay area. they also told parents that they have to solutions because they won't longer be receiving covid relief funds. they say those funds at 87 million dollars were used for supplies and to help support staff. this is an issue. other schools in the bay area are struggling with as well. just yesterday, oakland unununified came under fire from frustrated teachers and students after they announced they will potentially merge 10 schools. they're closing down 5 officials say the merges will be between schools that already share a campus resulting in no students needing to move schools. but that's not the case over in san francisco, sf usc were the first to announce a mergers last month. they plan to close 3 schools and merge 8 others. they also say to other schools will be a quote, welcoming school off our clothes school. many families are criticizing

tonight through 7 o'clock friday for dangerous right driving head up to lake tahoe. >>well, new tonight, we're just learning now that president elect trump's pick for the next defense secretary was previously under investigation for assaults right in our backyard in monterey, moderate police confirmed they investigated peter headset in connection to an alleged assault. that happened back in a motel in 2017. police say the incident happened overnight and they didn't provide any details about the victim. only saying that the victim suffered a bruise on right thigh headset currently works as a fox news host and trump named him as defense secretary as a nominee earlier this week. an investigation is underway in the east bay following a spill from chevron's richmond refinery. state officials sharing this picture of the equipment at the richmond dwarf this morning. it was used to help absorb some of this bill. but officials say y there are no impacts to

examination. kron four's lezla gooden has more. s, as you mentioned, this is day 2 many taking the stand and the prosecution continued their cross examination and it was more combative. and before again, cameras are not allowed inside. but let me tell you what the court room didn't look like. it was packed more than it ever has been since the trial began. i know many while the stand appeared annoyed him became argumentative with the prosecution and his own defense lawyers during the continuation of cross-examination, the prosecution tried to show many was angry with leave because he believed that his drug exuauauauaually assaulted his sister khazar at one many and the prosecutor began sparring back and forth in the courtroom many push back on questions and pointed his finger at him. the keys then admitted that he never called police after bob lee was stabbed. >>and he died during his second day on the many continue to claim that tried to kill him because of the bad

>>in the east bay, violence continues in the city of antioch. >>kron four's philippe djegal reports this time a woman says a person carjacked when she stopped to help them after a crash. >>as the line grew with drivers ing up to pick up their drive-thru coffee just before 9 o'clock wednesday morning. and visitors headed to the slaton ranch shopping center in antioch, 2 good samaritans who exited their cars to help a driver who they believed had just crashed in front of the shopping center, ended up becoming victims. you have to do the best you can to

department continues to build up its depleted staffing levels. this week, the council approved funding double time for officers to work extra shifts in crime ridden areas and agreed to move forward on establishing a police substation at sycamore square where gang-related shootings have escalated since labor day in antioch, philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. >>san joseilmember omar torrrrrrrrrres will remain behi bars. this after a judge orders he will be held without bail during a hearing on thursday. kron four's rob nesbitt was in the courtroom and has the details behind the judge's ruling. >>council member omar torres faces 3 felony charges of child molestation with someone under the age of 14. the incident dates back 25 years ago. but a judge said today that torres is still a danger to minors. omar torres appeared in court thursday, but just out of sight next to his lawyer with only his hands visible. the san jose city council members accused of sexually abusing a minor and

1999, though the incident was 25 years ago. santa clara county assistant district attorney brian welch. >>use more recent evidence to request towards be held without bail. looked at the evidence that we cited of text messages. >>between mr tours and the individual who we reported was extorting him. >>but these were text messages from 2 years ago. and from that the court was able to conclude that there was an ongoing danger to minors. a police affidavit obtained by kron 4 contain those recent text messages in which torres. >>take that he had oral with a 17 year-old that evidence was enough for a judge to rule thursday that torres be held without bail. a decisit his attorney nelson, mckell murray, was not surprised by certainly understand the court's ruling disappointing. of course, i do think that mr. >>as an adult, a model citizen and has given back a tremendous amount of this community is certainly weknown.

>>kron four's your local election headquarters thursday. california's top elections officials are firing back amid criticism the state is taking too long to count the votes. capitol correspondent wallace has a closer look at some of the criticism and has the response from secretary of state shirley weber. >>well, now that it's been about a week and a half since election day, when voters eithropped off or sent in their vote by mail ballots. the secretary of state says there are still more than one and a half million votes left to count statewide. but she says despite thevote count, it's all about ensuring

accurate results and will be questions about why california's final vote is taking so long. california electihief secretary of state dr shirley weber. >>answering those questions thursday. a week and a half after election day. she says the state has processed more than 14.4 million ballots bububububut adds there are stil than 1.6 million left to count. so why does it take so long? it's really quite a process if you've ever had a chance to work with us and to know how it takes with california. basically make sure that every votents s s s s specifically. she says there are a few factors that go into the long count. first acknowledge is the signature verification process slows everything down. but she says that ensure safeguards and preventing voter fraud mentioned are votes that come in by mail. and as a result that requires verification of the signature of the of the on the on the most. and so we have to opives. . . . we have t verify the signature and all those things before we can actually except ballots simply

type of thing and courtroom drama. that's wow. yeah. so very sensitive. the other topic we wanted to bring up with you is the sheriff in san mateo county. >>the drama going on down there she is accused of having a intimate relationship with her chief of staff. and there was this report from an independent judge, retired judge that allegedly found that basically she and he rule with an iron fist rule unfairly bully. >>the deputies there. a deputy was arrested 2 days ago. >>perhaps in response to this and now she shows up at the board of supervisors meeting. they're trying to get her to resign. she said promotes her chief of snd then walks off. so what the county attorney e researching what do i do? yes, i guess you're happy. you're not that he bet happy. i'm not that attorney. but this situation

but they're certainly appearing to be. in your face, everybody. i promoted him. i'm doing that. walking off public. doesn't like that. and the county officials don't like that. well, and if you read any policy >>any company, that's why they discourage. i kind of relationships in the office place because it can lead to hit situations like this and causes intra sheriff's department or police departments. it really does. but i think it really comes down to when yoully get to the heart of it. they didn't like it. and therefore, there was a knee-jerk reaction to analogy standing as he's standing firm. but i don't think she's going to be there for much longer. you watch hard to get rid of a sheriff, though. it is hard to get rid of a sheriff, but all right. we will. i mean, it's just hard review too, but they did.
