rothman. we start with the wild weather. cars trapped in flooded roads, trees crashing down and hundreds of flights delayed. >>it's just the beginning of an atmospheric river that set to bring even more rain and strong winds of the bay area tonight and through the weekend and more schools in the north bay will be closed tomorrow because of this weather. you can see the full list on sonoma county office of education's website. some of the schools have been closed since yesterday when the river first moved in for chief. meteorologist lawrence karnow joins us. what we can expect over the weekend. lawrence. >>we've been coming down and the focubeenenenen in the north. they with the storm system, very heavy rainfall. in fact, record rain in santa rosa exceedinr all-time record for a day there. and now they've had over 6 inch today and now there are over 10 inches of you can believe that. but more rain continuing to fall outside right now. here's a look at some of the totals, though. the mountains in the north bay. how about that? but not all over 17 inches of rain over 15 inches of rain. austin creek, santa

rosa over 10 inches of rain in this storm. petaluma almost 5 inches of rain over 7 inches ofofofofof rain in san anselmo. then you see kind of that cutoff line. you head south of the golden gate bridge and 3 quarters inch, just kind of normal rain in the san francisco. but anything but normal in the north bay. and so we continue to see that red area expand. that is the flood warning right now we are seeing many small creeks and streams already reached their flood stage and go over the top. so we're watching some flooding all the way along the coastline near guerneville. you're going to see that exceed its a flood stage along the russian river and all the way the so we're watching that very going to see more rain coming in. heavy rain overnight. in fact, some of the forecast and are forecast a storm system. we've seen 17 inches of rain in the mountain tops above the russian river. now expecting the russian river to flood early on saturday morning reaching minor flood stage at about 33 almost 34 feet early saturday morning.

>>thanks, lauren swell. santa rosa is under a flood warning tonight. several roads across sonoma county are already flooded with the letting up anytime soon, it's only expected to get worse. one parking lot flooded so bad. inside a hotel and nearby pped medical offices. kron 4 sarah stinson has the details. >>and overflowing creek on thursday flooded. this is santa rosa parking lot on airway drive trapping hundreds of people inside the hampton inn and suites and a sutter health medical facility. never anything like this. >>oh, my god. >>the flooding prevented this woman from going to a doctor's appointment that i canou can't get there from here. the fire department responded to help rescue people, including an 83 year-old woman in a wheelchair. at least 6 cars got stuck in deep waters. one of the cars that flooded in this parking lot was right here was up to the steering wheel and now it's being towed

rothman. new details tonight in the ongoing controversy surrounding the san mateo county sheriff christina corpus. the founding from an independent for investigation were released today. it confirmed text messages using a homophobic slur that were sent out from the sheriff cell phone earlier this week. san mateo county supervisors voted unanimously to pass an ordinance that calls for special election remove her and replace her. a scathing report released last week detailed the sheriffs a legit homophobic behavior and retaliation against staff as well as inappropriate relationships to name a few when her co-worker. well, we've reached out to the sheriff not yet heard back. happening tomorrow. former san jose city council member omar torres is expected to be back ourt. torres was arrested earlier this month on child molestation charges. his vacant seat on the city council will now be filled duri him set to take place sometime next year. and over in san

francisco, it's set to receive a million dollars to address a sea level rise along the great highway. this comes right after a voter's just passed prop k to turn the road into a permanent park. supporters say this will give the city more open space for everyone to enjoy and planners hope to also use this money to add new paths and beach access points. the great highway is expected to reopen car free in early 2025. city of berkeley officially has a new mayor. ascena is she narrowly won the race against city council veteran south behind say they organizer will become the first asian american mayor in berkeley's history is she will be sworn in next month and she succeeds. jesse arkin who was just elected the state senate. well, former cop, florida congressman matt gaetz is withdrawing his name from consideration as president elect trump's attorney general. it comes just one day after gates met with senators

napa. chp warning drivers take it slow and gift cars in front of them. some extra space kron four's. justine waldman spoke with daniel gilmore with chp in contra costa county tell us more about driving safely in the rain. what are you seeing out there on the roads today? >>also, like many places right we're just seeing a lot of vehicles that are losing control due to a making the proper choices on driving in inclement weather. >>and so what what is what is the right choice? that's what i try to talk to my kids about trying to make good choices. what can we do to be better drivers out there? >>that's great question. so again, the basin remember that all crashes are preventable. the not accidents right? so the big thing for us right now so be slwn o o o o over driving in rain. like this, checking your vehicle before you drive, making sure that your tires and proper tread proper inflation, your headlights work and your wipers work as well. and then speaking of while driving that

out drones to respond to calls this program will be running for the next 2 weeks. will they will be taking notes on how well these jones wd to respond to calls, as well as how these departments could benefit from them. next time you call 9-1-1. the first responder on scene might just be a drone. is we prepositioned a drone in the city of sacramento to respond to calls for service. >>so it allows us to get on scene faster. the can be up in the air and respond to a call in as little as 90 seconds. kind of open the floodgates on allowing it to respond to whatever we can that seem sufficient since 2019 sacramento police departments u.s. team has used many drones to assist while officers are on patrol this year. so far, those many drones supported over 170 emergency calls and flew more than 573 flights that this trial first responder will operate differently. this is a preposition one ready to launch any time. the department is currently using one drone during the two-week

>>stocktktkton city council approved this resolution just last week for a grant of $963,000 thanks to the. department of justice. now, resolution calls for purchase of night vision goggles that city leaders say will help improve response to calls. but it's not just at resolution. also calls for the purchase of 110 license plate readers to be installed throughout the city to help solve criminal cases and reduce crimes using an automated license plate recognition system called blocked. this is nothing new for this city as it already has 15 of these readers scattered around town. here's how it works. once police put out an alert in the flock system for a specific type of car or license plate, the system uses a reader's set up around town to capture photos of cars and license plate data from there. the system alerts police when they wanted a car or one associated with the crime has been spotted essentially given police an extra pair of eyes on the roads to help track down that
