thorn. well, this week's atmospheric river continuing to wreak havoc across the bay area in san francisco, a 60 foot tree fell down, damaging a car and blocking an intersection. this is at sansom and pacific streets just blocks away from our station here on front street, firefighters are on scene cutting down the tree into those smaller sections and eventually hoping to get that roadway cleared out. and we're following the storm tonight as the rain continues to come down. we want to turn things over to our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. it's going to say when i think into the weekend we're not done with this one just yet outside right now. >>it is wet out there on the embarcadero. but most the heavier rain has come to an end in san francisco. still expecting more showers. this all part of that atmospheric river. you can see the arrows here coming all the way from the hawaiian islands, bringing that some tropical moisture up into the bay area and why that's important that warm air can hold a lot more raindrops. and that means by the time it gets here, you can produce a

lot of rain in a hurry. and that's exactly what happened. now, unlike the storms that have been over the north bay last couple days, this one did not stall and so push all the way down across the entire bay area. that's why everybody has had a soaking. and boy, it just continues to fall. some of the santa cruz mountains now shown over 6 inches of rain already just today alone in san francisco over 3 inches of rain. and that's how it's playing out all around. so even though didn't stall tremendous amount of water coming down from those clouds showers out there right now on. yeah, you're seeing the heavier amounts of rain further to the south, but still plenty of rain all around the bay area. the pockets of heavy rain vote, though, are going to continue in the south bay as we head through the evening hours. then its going to be in to break up just a little bit. we're still seeing a little bit of wind out there, not much most that is going to track further and further south. there's a wind advisory that continues into parts of the peninsula and the south bay expecting some gusty winds as that front pulls through. but winds are kind of tailing off just a little bit now, right forecast for you as we head through the night tonight, midnight. you see the

showers continuing kind of broken in spots heavier to the south as we head through the night, we start to get on the backside of this storm system. that's where we start to run in a some unstable air. so the possibility we could be talking about some thunderstorms tomorrow morning. 07:00am in the north bay rumbling on through their more scattered showers through the middle of the morning. that was a pretty intense self. this comes true that could be a large thunderstorm just off the coastline of san francisco and then rolling on through as we head throughout the morning hours. so we're not done with the rain just yet. we're going to catch a little bit of a break tomorrow. more scattered showers, then steady rain tomorrow. well, as lawrence just mentioned, the rain and wind are hitting the south bay for. >>the first time during big storm system. kron four's jack moment. joining us from santa clara county with more. >>standing here on this bridge overlooking highway 2.80, were on the corner of cupertino and sunnyvale, the west side of silicon valley where this massive rainstorm has moved its way down to the south bay area. but as i speak right now, there are ongoing. has this conditions for drivers on the freeway.

>>commuters in silicon valley friday stuck in this rain. and this wind. outside the safeway in santa clara. it was a mad dash to get the essentials for a rainy weekend. >>we do expect more during the of the following days. and yeah, looking forward to it. now. we have begun. games are getting cancer. that's not true. fascinated about that. but yeah, i guess as she says this rain in the south bay is much needed. >>but he's concerned about flooding. yeah, we are about that, but i hope it doesn't. we're going to let states officials telling kron 4 this week they don't expect serious flooding. but caution drivers on the highways when we have. >>roads that becomes you even more focused. make sure that we are. it's going down. driving the bowl chp, san jose public information. officer ross says standing water on the freeway can cause drivers to lose control of their

rain right now in the south bay doesn't look that strong. but every hour it seems switch up between super heavy rain and super light rain and that is expected to last throughout the weekend as the system moves throughout the south bay area. there were flood advisories friday evening from san mateo county, santa clara county and santa cruz county. any chance of potential flooding. >>that will probably be in the santa cruz mountains where the rain is most significant reporting here pitino jack moment. kron 4 news. >>also in san jose, the fire department has been on high alert right to respond to any emergencies. they're keeping an eye on creeks and streams as the guadalupe river is expected to rise 2 to 3 inches overnight during the storm. first responders have been advising people to stay away from moving water that could rise rapidly. >>so have the specialized rescue teams called it. urban search and rescue team has advanced capabilities with their specialist in aquatic rescue and they have inflatable rescue boats available. they have drones that can do searches with flir

cameras up and down. the greeks for for people may be stuck or trapped. >>firefighters also warned there is a possibility of power outages with winds picking up. and if you see a downed power line avoided always treated as if it's active. as widespread in constant rain has caused a lot of flooding in many parts of sonoma county, including and rohnert park. and some cars actually got stuck on several roads up there. and the storm even causing some schools to evacuate. sarah stinson reports. >>reyds good. but then again, too much red. sometimes good cause havoc. yes. >>a rough for drivers stuck in floodwaters in rohnert park. some girl was right in the middle of the four-way stop just completely sunk several cars could be seen abandoned in front of the costco on redwood drive off of rohnert park expressway. while some drivers turned around to avoid the flooding. most when for many ways. and there's been a lot of people trying to go through it.

sure that, you know, you're not going to get stalled out in the middle of a puddle like agenda, flooding became so that here does streets students at marjory honda element re school had to be evacuated, taken by bus to a nearby community center. that's where parents could pick up their kids. we know this happened at at least one other school in the district. >>thankfully, water has receded since then. i'm sara stinson reporting in rohnert park. back to you. >>the san francisco department of homelessness doing their part to help the unhoused during this storm. they say they are handing out emergency blankets and ponchos and checking for the people for hypothermia. this is list of drop in centers that are providing temporary shelter and resources for the unhoused. if you see someone who you think may need a place to go, you can refer them to one of these locations here on this screen and be sure to stay with kron 4 on air and online is where staying on this atmospheric river. watch. you can find the current conditions, weather headlines and all that on our website.

kron 4 dot com. in other news tonight, a manager of the san jose boxing gym being charged with sexually assaulting 3 women while on the job. prosecutors say tristan arsene who owns yds fitness assaulted 2 customers. an employee, the santa clara county district attorneys office says our fee also assaulted a minor back in 2019 at a different boxing gym in menlo park. he said to be arraigned next month and could face years in prison if convicted. investigators believe there are more victims out there, possibly if anyone has any information about mister our fee, be sure to call police. the man has been convicted of carjacking in over a driver in san francisco. police say this happened back in january. chase and aggression approach. the uber driver at fisherman's wharf demanded a ride when a driver said no gresham threatened him with a weapon and then forced him out of the car. gresham then took off in that driver's car, led police on a 40 minute chase before he

was eventually arrested vallejo. gresham is being charged carjacking evading police in giving police false information. he said to be sentenced in december. in the east bay, a road that's that was already damaged by storm. that happened earlier this year. it's not gonna be opening for a little while because of this weather we've been dealing with this week. crews and the space a that tesla road livermore is going to be closed until next month. they say drivers going to have to wait until approximately december 16th to get back on that road. it's are travelers expected to hit the roads for thanksgiving. according to aaa, 80 million people will likely travel 50 miles or more. >>that's up from a million from last year. >>out early, get out in the morning to get out before 10 o'clock in the morning. you're going to avoid most of the traffic. but if you want to talk traffic, we have a risk some of the busiest roadways in the country and one northern california roadway. it that list. the i-80 east on

out of oakland international airport, expecting long lines on the road and at terminals pleasantly surprised to see the lines moving with minimal flight delays. we had 9 min delay was in that. that's not really. anthony gonyea flew in from arizona to visit family for thanksgiving in any act. it was a little bumpy. actually was really bumpy. but that's expected winds really stormy the flight board reassuring for travelers throughout the day with the majority of flights boarding taking off and landing on time between today and sunday. the first of december, we expect 340,000 passengers to pass through a case terminals. the airport predicts the peak travel days this season to be the tuesday and wednesday before thanksgiving. >>and the sunday after this year, we expect just slightly below what we saw last year. but again, we do expect to be busy. the airport recommends travelers download their airline smartphone app and enable notifications to keep up to date on your flight status and make sure you

and landed on his son's apartment on fore street in santa rosa friday morning. he's got to come out. they're going to shut the power down. >>somebody has got to come out clean up this tree. electricians got to come out and it's all electrical. so it's going to be >>a process. they had over 12 inches of rain in the last couple days. that's a lot it doesn't take much. now. this will start to get saturated as additional rainfall comes and we get the breezes of when to take a tree down. >>take a look at this. this car caught in flood waters near the sonoma county fairgrounds. paulo on with santa rosa fire says a 3rd day of strong storms are keeping streets flooded. >>if you do see those road closures, i noticed some cars just drove around. i'm not safe. >>correct. and we had that happened again already. one of our roads did start to flood driver, tried to get through it without themselves staff a colder so that colbert was not able to be seen as a driver. you the flood waters and is

exactly how that driver got stuck. we've tried to push the message of not driving flood waters, not drive around closures for a reason. that's another prime example of what happened this morning is a an incident that prompts response from fire and police to get that driver out of harm's way to start working on getting the vehicle out of the out of the colbert. but it's also pulling them away from other critical calls. and take a look at this. that's a santa rosa creek that is just behind. >>this apartment complex impacted by the tree that fell on the roof. so certainly a lot going on for these residents. some tell me that they are very worried that the creek is going to continue to rise and spill out over its banks. they say that they're going to stay here for as long as they can. but if that water starts to come up, then they will certainly evacuation here in santa rosa, theresa stasi kron. 4 news. >>rain dumping down on san francisco friday with downpours triggering a flash flood warning for the city

kron four's dan kerman and san francisco with more on how this storm is causing issues. >>friday cars on san francisco's marina boulevard. look more like boats on a lake as the storm finally reach south of the golden gate. pulling water like this on the embarcadero was the order of the day along folsom street barricades were up to prevent the type of devastating flooding this area has seen in past years. 24th and dolores overflowing storm drains ended up flooding the crosswalk a block away. it was a similar story at 23rd and delors. but some kids managed to make the best of the flooding. and it wasn't just on surface streets. northbound 2.80, just shy of john daly boulevard flooded due to overflowing storm drains that brought traffic to a crawl just to get past another muddy lake. and of course, those flood waters are even more difficult to see during the nighttime hours. so

are finally starting to see a break from the heavy rain. sonoma county, though, is still dealing with all the aftermath. kron four's gayle ong reports. >>driving along star road near west marks station road in windsor vineyards and driveways submerged in water. a few miles across town. the winds are golf course under water. turning into a lake this after days of relentless

rain from an atmospheric river flooding parts of sonoma county and the north bay in santa rosa. record rains, swamp local roads like this known trouble spot river road and slusser road where one man lost his car. the car has since been towed away. but we found this man watching a friend get stuck near the same area. as you call. go out for us it again. go years they put i write them he says the feat that is for both these right there. >>and you have a big monster truck. you're not going right there. >>most of the flooding problems happened at creeks like mark west creek. but concerns now about the russian river rising this weekend. the first significant storm of the season also triggered mudslides in and around the north locals plan to stay on top of preparations before the next storm. >>and driving in and around rural sonoma county. you can expect several road closures like this one due to flooded streets until further notice.

reporting here in santa rosa, gayle ong kron. 4 news. >>in the north bay, sonoma county getting hit with more heavy rain. the risk of flooding along the russian river is a growing danger. kron 4 charles clifford has more. >>well, here in guerneville on friday, the water level in the russian river continues to rise friday morning. the russian river near guerneville was running deep and muddy. so far. the river is mostly staying within its banks. but there has already been some flooding friday morning. multiple vehicles and buildings were submerged in several feet of water at this construction site on the north side of the river, crews were on hand trying to clear the debris and say their equipment along the river. a few neighbors were checking out the water. this man says he's lived in guerneville for 43 years. he's concerned that the river is this high so early in the rainy season winners just starting and everything's pretty saturated now. so, you know, i mean, as long as we get breaks in the weather in

the rain. if we get the brakes, that's what we want. so it's good. the national weather service is predicting that the russian river will hit the minor flooding stage around 6 friday evening. neighbors here worry about those who live near the water. you know, everybody that lives close to the river has to know, you know, what could happen during the winters. the weather service is also predicting that the russian river will peak around 04:00am saturday morning and then the water level will hopefully start to recede. now, even though neighbors here are concerned about potential flooding, they are all breathing a sigh of relief that the fire danger is over at least for this year. but for now in the north bay, charles clifford kron, 4 news. >>colorado and alabama are fighting to be the home of us space command today. some lot in washington all explain what members of

>>the sierra nevada is a popular spot for bay area residents to travel to over the holidays. triple a expecting more than 55 million people to hit the roads and the skies for the thanksgiving holiday. for more on what travelers can expect out there, kron four's darya folsom and james fletcher spoke with john trainer with aaa of northern california. >>are we looking at record numbers of people on the roads this coming thanksgiving? >>we are looking at record numbers of people on the road in the air on cruise ships, record numbers of people traveling. aaa predicting 80 million americans are going to be traveling over thanksgiving break. that is up from where we were 2019 and that is the pre-pandemic numbers we often waiting to see. so we are hitting all-time records, his gym or more drive than fly. still.

and the vast majority of people will be driving it. we're expecting about 5.8 million americans will be flying. so most of the rest will be hearing it behind wheel of their car. >>and a lot of people are going to be driving as we're getting hit with this atmospheric river thoughts on what people just need to keep in mind as they're heading out for the holidays. >>well, the good news is most americans will be waiting until about monday to start their thanksgiving travel. obviously, the wednesday before thanksgiving. the real busy one for yeah. those 80 million americans 11 are, you know, california. so california roadways are going to be very busy if you are heading out inclement weather, if you're seeing this rain come in, maybe if you're heading to an area that just got hit with snow is going to be cautious. probably haven't driven in a while.

the day. on the day. will the airports are not terrible i have found and i do. but the roads, what do you think? >>that is the clearest road you're going to in a long time. most people will to destination by thursday. so thursday, we're not expecting any traffic. and again, if you're at airports, you're not going to give too many people flying because they're doing it before. >>and then the other question, too, for folks hitting the road is and, you the person asked what's what's the latest numbers readings on gas prices? what are people looking? i feel like they've gone down recently, but i do know they bounce back. >>you know, they have been going down for 44 across the state right now. perspective last year, the same day 94. so that $0.50 cheaper per gallon. and we've seen this decline release in september, october after that summer driving don't expect him to be jumping right before the thanksgiving holiday, even without drivers driving, it might go up a little bit because demand is up. but really, these prices are kind of like you're going to see. and that's good news

>>well, some kind of storm rolling into the bay area last couple of days. we're not done just yet. we've got more on the well. these next storms not going to be atmospheric river events, but those still be wet. and that means we could see more rapid rises along some of those creeks and streams around the bay area. so as we head throughout the rest, the evening showers continuing outside right now. more scattered, though, about the bay area. the heavier rainfall moving into the south bay. you see the trend as we head through the day that rain starting on the north bay first and really heavy rain slowly dragging its way southward into the santa clara valley this evening. and that's kind of where it sits right now. seeing that rain in that area scattered about the rest. the bay area, though, right now, the raindrops point been heavy in the santa cruz mountains over 6 inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains just this afternoon, scattered showers continuing in toward livermore, but lighter amounts there. and then back toward the peninsula. san francisco, you're still seeing some rain. but most that scattered and light at this time and probably the best news of all.

continuing our storm coverage in the east bay where the weather has caused a few power outages in downtown walnut creek kron four's. let's good reports from there. >>yes, we are right here in downtown walnut creek. and this storm is starting to really rage in the last hour. the rain has really intensified and also the wind as well. and the people we spoke with say they have never experienced anything quite like this. take a look at this video from earlier throughout the day. we saw several contra costa county fire engines responding to calls. bruce, tell me that part of the downtown area lost power, including some shops. this resulted in some people getting stuck in elevators, according to the fire department for people were stuck into elevators located in parking structures. the

>>all right. now to football and some bad news for the forty-niners starting quarterback brock purdy officially ruled out for sunday's game against the packers. he's been dealing with a sore shoulder since sunday's loss to the seahawks and was a limited participant in practice this week, although he left yesterday's practice early and miss practice today entirely pretty well. he hasn't put up the mvp type numbers umass last year. he's still been very good. most of the season throwing for 13 touchdowns and rushing for 4 more. it will certainly be a big loss. it also means brandon allen will get the chance to step into the starting role on sunday. the forty-niners backup hasn't thrown a regular season pass since 2022 when he was with the cincinnati bengals. but he did play in all 3 preseason games this year for his career. allen thrown 10 touchdowns and 6 interceptions in 16 games. >>a 32 year-old has a career passer rating of 78 of the 49. a coaching staff has a lot of faith in allen to manage the

storms roll through as they come through. they're coming through some different air masses. they may be a little bit warmer a little bit colder. and that's going to change over time. heavy snow expected throughout the weekend. gusty winds from time to time on and off snow level about 5500 feet. as we look toward tomorrow, expecting maybe as much as 2, maybe 4 feet of snow across a pace, places above about 7,000 feet. but it is going to tough traveling up in the high country. there's no getting around trying to time out the storms. here we go. we've got winter storm warnings in effect not only through the weekend, but all the way until tuesday. up next week as we're going to see a series of storms still can affect a bay area. know they're not going to be these big atmospheric river events, but they're going to definitely impact the sierra nevada snow falling around the lake. kind of a neat look, you can see that ring of blue and white around the lake right now and right at the lake level is temperatures fairly mild out there compared to the rest of the area. so you're seeing rain down lake level. you get over top of the summit and you're seeing some snow. so a lot of 30's around lake right now as we head throughout the
