>>the u.s. coast guard launched an aerial search for a 72 year-old man believed to have gone overboard. a ruby princess cruise this morning. this happened ahead of the cruise ship's arrival into san francisco following a five-day round-trip voyage to ensenada kron 4. sarah stinson has more. >>we have confirmed the overboard passenger was traveling alone on the cruise and they have not been able to find him yet. a u.s. coast guard spokesperson explained to me just how difficult this kind of search can be. >>a tragic announcement monday night delaying the departure of a princess cruise docked at san francisco's pier. 27. the ruby princess was set to take off on a 16 day voyage to the hawaiian islands. princess cruises says a 72 year-old man went missing around 6.50 monday morning on the previous five-day voyage to ensenada.

crew members searched the ship several times and comb through security video coming to the conclusion that he must have gone overboard. a spokesperson for princess cruises released a statement saying in part, quote, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the guest who is traveling alone. the coast guard was called in to search for the man 45 miles off the coast of monterey can station here for >>quite a few years. this is the first time i believe i have look at the passenger missing overboard from a cruise ship. hunter schnabel is with the coast guard. he says their aircraft from sacramento responded as well as a helicopter from san francisco. >>he described the challenges they're facing to search. a wide area of the ocean does take quite a bit of time a lot that goes into that. have a way to calculate kind of adrift pattern to where the individual to have through to to the california highway patrol is assisting with the search just before 6 at night.

routine, but also his it just makes mikey really sad. and it might change, you know, the school that he goes to next year because of my route to work in the morning. many east side, san jose families are working class and the side of town is also primarily first and second generation families. parents monday argued the closures unfairly target down the prosperity that is generated in this city isn't always spread. councilmember peter ortiz says more families are moving out of the area over the cost of living and says it's a major factor in the school's 20 million dollar budget i understand the trustees have a hard decision today and that i hope they listen to the community. the superintendent for alum rock union sent kron 4 a statement saying, quote, this decision is one of the most difficult we face is that district. but it is guided by our commitment to providing the best possible education for every student. the superintendent also wrote once the closures do happen, more resources can be directed to the schools that are still around. will every day just getting worse and worse. but parents like flor de leon say that's not good enough and that the district knew about

these issues for years. well, they could have done something different, you know, because at point to all seeing 6 schools once, it tells you that now we're hasn't been that the district also cited the end of covid pandemic relief funds for it, bringing them into this budget crunch that they're facing here. now, monday's meeting was not the end of the discussion coming up in january. there will be more meetings hosted with allen rock union that will help parents understand how there children will move to different campuses. reporting here in east side, san jose. jackie moment kron 4 news. >>those in oakland also facing closures, oakland unified school district meeting weighing plans to deal with a 95 million dollar budget deficit projected for next year. district currently wants to merge 10 schools and 5 shared campuses. he'll be voting on a plan next tuesday and a very similar situation in hayward as well. the hayward unified school district hosted a town hall on monday night discussing the district's budget shortfall.

the district has consistently been reporting a drop in enrollment for the past decade. fewer students mean less state funding at the same time pandemic-relief funds are expiring. hayward's school district officials have not said if they are planning closing schools. these are once again top of mind in foster city on monday night, the city council discussed a potential plan to protect the public's health and the lagoon areas. kron four's. lindsey ford explains. >>one thing is clear. foster city leaders say they need to find a solution to downsize the increasing population of canada goose in their city, especially in the lagoon. areas. but they don't want to kill the birds. instead, they brought in wildlife innovations to create an environmental review to deal with increasing geese population. >>canada geese and their droppings are the culprit of increased e-coli levels and foster city's lagoon making it

>>san francisco is federal building is now called the speaker nancy pelosi, federal building the former speaker, was there monday to unveil the new sign for the building near market street. kron. 4 charles clifford has more. >>well, the federal building here along 7th street near market is an iconic structure in the neighborhood. and as of today, it has a new name monday morning. former speaker of the house nancy pelosi was on hand here at the federal building along 7th as the facility was renamed in her honor. it is now the speaker, nancy pelosi, federal building pelosi, of course, has represented san francisco in the bay area in congress since 1987. she has had a large impact on the city in the area over the years at monday's ceremony, a long list of local elected officials said that renaming the building is a fitting tribute to her work future generations, helpless. people who well. >>come to this building to

death of a 9 year-old boy takes an even more disturbing turn after the victim's father is arrested on suspicion of killing his own son. the boy was playing outside of his grandparents, house and compton saturday night when he was shot and killed. sara welch reports. >>tonight, the boy's father is being held on 2 million

stole his expensive computer from the apple store at the glendale galleria. >>i was just like, wow, you just gave away $5,000 order back in october. he says apple sent him a notification that his online order was ready for pickup. what happens when you try to get your computer? so i show them the qr code and the tax that they sent me their their systems at me saying that it was available for pick-up. they scan it. and then they just kind of are like a this or doesn't take doesn't explain computer shocked. he then talked to managers about the huge mistake. the manager tell you, what was the protocol? did they check id? check a qr code was an order number. how did this other person get your product? really wish i had clear answers that says that was really what i kept asking them was like, how could this happen? like you guys have had a security breach? frustrated. jonah says apple never checked for id and that the thief just used an order number to take his computer. >>he kept all receipts and filed a police report hoping

enter. congratulations. members. we're watching history made here. not just because it's the swearing-in ceremony, which is historic in its own right, but also because the legislature will be made up of more women than ever before in the state senate. more than half of the members are women in the assembly. nearly half are women in total of the 120 seats in both houses. at least 59 will be held by women. when i joined legislature 6 years ago, we were less than a quarter women. in just 6 years, we've gone to almost half which is an incredible incredible week for california. politically, republicans made inroads this election flipping at least one seat in each chamber from blue to red. but just as it was before the election, both houses will be made up of at least 2 thirds democrats officially giving them a super majority status. that significant because just by the map alone, the super majority status allows democrats to pass bills without having to reach across the aisle for republican support. >>clerk will open the role.
