phone repair on international boulevard this morning. the owner says the group ransacked the store stealing hundreds of phones. the burglars also took accessories and replacement parts electronics. the store has only been open since august, but has already dealt was several break-in attempts this time. unfortunately, the criminals got in. >>right now, i don't have a single fun side. they took all the air pods they had inside that took on a samsung to head inside. it took off on the prepaid phones like little prepaid devices and just heartbreaking. you can't do anything about it. this stores getting 5 families, you know, and to shut it down for one day that some $3,000 lost every single day. >>we're told the stories looking more than $100,000 in losses, they'll be forced to close for the next few days as repairs and restocking is happening come. police is investigating. on the peninsula. paul also unified may be facing a lawsuit. this

after attorneys say a boy was locked inside a closet for 15 minutes, according to a claim filed today. this happened at escondido elementary in january. and now advocates are calling on law enforcement for additional investigations. kron 4 sarah stinson reports. >>the naacp says the alleged closet incident is one of several reports of students experiencing frightening mistreatment from staff members at the after school program here called right at school are relation work with several families. >>that complaint about. some instances of racial bias. physical soltz, at least one of those families are working on a potential lawsuit against the palo alto unified school district after their 10 year-old boy suffered what they call racism and physical abuse. a claim filed wednesday says it happened in january escondido elementary at the after school program called right at school.

>>the san jose and silicon valley naacp president elect sean allen says a staff member locked up the child who was 9 years old at the time in a closet for 15 minutes. the child was so distraught and traumatized. the family's attorneys say in a state of panic, the boy was able to call his dad for help on his smart watch. ellen says after the family complained to the district, the same staff member retaliated by inciting c courage. >>other children to to to physically abuse a child. he literally held him down front of faculty member and stepped on this growing the regional manager of right at school says they conducted an investigation and fired the employee that same month. allen says the school district failed to protect the boy and now he's suffering. emotionally family has asked. and we have asked the school >>to assist them and many levels. and it's just one pill. jurek another right at school claims they supported the student through his

counting process takes too long. our capitol correspondent tom wachs explains why weber is defending the process and shares a new look at legislation seeking to expedite election results in the future. takes time. >>no one says democracy was straight, including folks say it's kind of messy and slow. california selections. chief secretary of state dr shirley weber responding to critics who argue california's vote counting process takes too long. people often ask why it takes longer to count votes in california. the answer is simple. we take the time to get invite. webber says that's noting every voter signatures carefully matched with the signature the state has on file. she also says the state's decision to send ballots in the mail to every registered voter means there are lots of votes for election workers to count specifically this here. more than 16 million californians cast a ballot marking a 71.4% statewide turnout. that is higher than the national average of 63%.

>>webber says it's important to note by california law her office has until this friday, more than one month since election day to officially certify the statewide results. people say, well, you've got technology as we do that, then we also have a tremendous manual process that occurs with verify every ballot. >>and if we decided not to verify ballots and not to look and we have all of those who claim we're letting any and everybody raise about voting. it is a it is. it is a challenge that we face and we will continue to face. but assembly member mark berman hopes the issue will not be a challenge moving forward. i think an area that we improve a little bit is how how fast we count the ballot. the menlo park democrat says he's in the process of authoring legislation. that does just that. what i'm going to do over the next couple of months is have conversations with the county elections officials to find out. how can we help you know, what is it that stopping you? >>from counting ballots past or is it a lack of a high-speed ballot counters? is it a lack temporary staff that

calling them the fastest growing gun safety problem in america. and we took a look online. you can actually search for and find a lot of these instructional videos and manuals that are in a ton of places teaching you how to make these weapons. and the atf says people can make pistols, revolvers rifles, shotguns, even silencers at home, using tools like 3 d printers. and it's legal to make them without a license. according to the atf. but ghost guns are becoming much more prevalent in crimes. the agency received approximately 45,000 reports of suspected ghost guns recovered by police and criminal investigations between january of 2016 in december 2021. we spoke to a retired atf special agent who said it is super simple for someone to try to make one of these weapons at home. so it doesn't even require the expertise to use. >>3 d printer. most of the time you just use these kits and really the kits are or what is problematic for law enforcement because there's no easy to use. they are so cheap and they are absolutely untraceable and they're being

approaches the sacred heart community service in san jose is now speaking out to the public asking for their help. they've been around for 60 years and this holiday season, they have a goal of delivering 3500 holiday food boxes and more than 18,000 gifts to families in need. kron four's justine waltman spoke with the mound. carter from sacred heart to tell us more about

it. >>these food boxes and these gifts that you need. who are they going to? what people in our community need help right now. >>people across our community need help right now. every day at sacred heart, we see 600 or more families that come to our food pantry. but we know during the holiday season, working families are under additional strain to put a hollow holiday meal on the table and to get gifts for their children. so our christmas and thanksgiving food programs just releasing to alleviate some of that stress, every food box that we give to families has about $150 worth of groceries and do our christmas program. we try to get 3 gifts to to 6,000 individual households and so on. this is just a small way that we try to alleviate some of the symptoms of poverty that exist in our community. and we really rely on donations to make these programs go so right now we're looking for chickens, turkeys and hams as well as toys for children, ages 0 to 16.

they're going to be moving in here over the next few days and well into next week. go to bring up a really a lot of rain around the bay area. so here we go out at the bridge right now. you got things pretty slick out there as we speak more than on the way as we head through the night. these storms generated some big-time swells along the coastline, some 20 some 22 foot swells moving in along the coast. watch out along west and northwest facing beaches. also going to see a very high tide astronomical high tide. the king tide rolling town going to be above 7 feet as we head into thursday right through monday. so be careful in and around the bay likely to see some flooding in some of those low lying areas. and of course, that's gonna help to back up some of the creeks and rivers to are watching those closely this weekend. storm clouds moving in and there's the rain moving in the bay area now stretching into san francisco, just beginning to move into san mateo and over to concord as well. we're gonna see more of that coming as we head throughout the night tonight. really spreading to the south into early tomorrow morning. they're going to get on the backside of it were thanks. we get really interesting. so here's the long-range forecast. here's that front. we're just looking at that dropping through overnight

tonight. and then the center of low comes right near the bay area, probably in the north bay. that may be just enough to set off some more showers. maybe some isolated thunderstorms as that comes by a brief break, but not for long. by friday. we get into the next storm. that's going to be much more potent storm rolling in free with a not only rain but heavy rainfall and some very gusty winds, maybe some 40 50 mile an hour gust specially into saturday morning. i think that will be the brunt of the storm coming through. lots of snow up in the sierra nevada. winter weather advisories up there as well. 5,000 feet could see several feet of snow and then it just keeps going. get a little bit of a break on sunday. more rain expected on monday, possibly into tuesday. and then after that, we gets more rain as we head in toward the following weekend. so you start out of some totals the next 24 hours, maybe as much a half an inch to about an inch of rain in parts of the bay area. so i'm talking about winds. a lot of that coming our way to tomorrow. those winds pick up once again going to be blustery afternoon. that helped clear out sky but pgetti in toward, especially on the morning on saturday morning. maybe some of those gusts 40 50 miles an hour next couple days. there you go. unsettled

weather continuing on and off. so winter is back. >>thanks, lauren well. a group of thieves pull up and 3 vehicles in east oakland and break into a cell phone shop. the owner is now picking up the pieces after the costly burglary. surveillance video shows the group breaking into mister phone repair on international boulevard wednesday morning. the owner says the group ransacked the whole store stealing hundreds of phones in the process. the burglars also accessories, replacement parts, electronics and more. the store has only been open since august, but has already dealt with several breaking attempts. and this time the criminals got in. >>right now, i don't have a single fun side. they took all the air pods they had inside that took on a samsung to head inside. it took off on the prepaid phones like little prepaid devices and just heartbreaking. you can't do anything about it. this store's hitting 5 families. you know, and to shut it down for one day that some $3,000 lost every single day.

work. >>doctor de roar back describing the danger her team discovered lurking beneath the surface. we studied 89 dolphins in 3 locations across the gulf of mexico. 83 were alive and 6 are dead and weaken the fentanyl and all 6 that defense. >>texas am corpus christi research revealing it all 30 bottle, nose dolphin tested positive for various drugs of those 30 24 dolphins at traces of fentanyl. we don't know with certainty where the fentanyl is coming from. we are very close to the mexican border. so that could be potentially drugs transported to the water. authorities say drug smugglers have been using the open waters for years transporting their product. just this summer, the mexican navy pulled roughly 1.6 tons of suspected cocaine out of the water all at once. big picture. do you think this is isolated? >>absolutely not. there was a study that just came out of the summer about sharks with

cocaine and newsnation getting rare access inside the lab, seeing samples in the bottle, nose dolphin that had traces of fentanyl. researchers like micaela glenn who spent years on this project say this is all part of a troubling trend. it's all very alarming to think about what's ending up in these animals and and our marine environment in the science center chemistry tells the stories we then send it to the massive trauma or here. that's where researcher justin elliott did a lot of the heavy lifting verifying the team's findings. i have seen a lot of similar types of situations where finding a lot of chemicals are not expecting in weird places but nothing like fentanyl found in dolphins. and for that reason, dr hussain of doulas says this study is just scratching the surface. what they call it. it's raising flag basically say, ok, that on a concern here. >>we need to look, we need to investigate it farther. and how big is that? the program it is only a local of mexico it is actually or white.
