although it was brief, the warning highlighted which communities are not prepared for a possible disaster. leaders in san mateo county been holding meetings with residents to learn more about ways they can better communicate during a tsunami kron four's. sara stinson was at tonight's meeting and happen. they. >>the meeting held here at mavericks else was full of coastal residents wanting answers from san mateo county leaders about what's being done to better prepare for a tsunami. the recent alert being called a stress test for the county. >>totally chaotic. we were walking their dog on and out of own wind with the tsunami alert warning we're doing in a row. class and then half an hour later, the came in and said that i in time to evacuate to higher ground. a tsunami alert issued on december 5th, still fresh on the minds of the coastal community in san mateo county. the national weather service triggered the alert after a 7 point. oh, earthquake struck

off the coast of humboldt county hour and 15 minutes later it was canceled. but the damage was done with thousands of people trying to evacuate and what that resulted in his people getting on highway one. >>and and in the real event, actually leaving areas that we're safe and going to areas where they were less safe. many say this should the county is not prepared. wasn't really clear that it was we saw same with lot of people in the low lying areas got on highway one in headed south to go over. 92 which if it was a real tsunami, would have been disastrous. and county leaders agree. that's why they've been holding multiple community meetings to address concerns and explain communication and preparedness improvements. one of many questions asked why didn't the tsunami sirens sound off? here's county supervisor ray mueller held off on getting that siren sirens because they really didn't want to cause panic throughout the cast. but people at the meeting said they panic to the moment. they got the alert because they didn't know if they were in an

at the walnut creek bart station overnight. authorities say that they found the man in a bathroom at the station shortly before midnight and then took him to the hospital. so looki inthow and where exactly this man was stabbed. bua passenger on board a san francisco bound train called dispatch about the man and what appeared to be a stab wound. he got off the train at walnut creek. investigators have only described him as a man in his 40's. his current condition is unknown. milpitas. police are investigating the death of 4 people as a murdersuicide. today officers identified the victims as 36 year-old van nguyen. his wife, betty famine, their 2 children, a 9 year-old boy and a 4 year-old girl. police say they found the family dead at the touring apartments on the cameras drive just before 9 o'clock tuesday night. investigators were there for a welfare check. family member called them saying they had not heard from their relatives for some time. police identified the

weeks since a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in humboldt county triggered a tsunami warning along the entire california coast, although it was brief, the warning highlighted which communities are not prepared for a possible disaster. leaders in san mateo county been holding meetings with residents to learn more about ways they can better communicate during a tsunami kron four's. sara stinson was at tonight's meeting and happened. they. >>the meeting held here at mavericks else was full of coastal residents wanting answers from san mateo county leaders about what's being done to better prepare for a tsunami. the recent alert being called a stress test for the county. >>totally chaotic. we were

walking their dog on and out of phone line with the tsunami alert. warning we're doing in a row class and then half an hour later, they came in and said that i in time to evacuate to higher ground. a tsunami alert issued on december 5th, still fresh on the minds of the coastal community in san mateo county. the national weather service triggered the alert after a 7 point. oh, earthquake struck off the coast of humboldt county an hour and 15 minutes later it was canceled. but the damage was done with thousands of people trying to evacuate and what that resulted in is people getting on highway one. >>and and in the real event, actually leaving areas that we're safe and going to areas where they were less safe. many say this should the county is not prepared. wasn't really clear that it was highways with lot of people in the low lying areas got on highway one in headed south to go over. 92 which if it was a real tsunami, would have been disastrous. and county leaders agree. that's why they've been

>>so the initial response a lot of work but pg e needed to do to repair their power also are blown over and the tornado. and in addition on mount herman road say it lost 15 traffic signals. and so we've been working to replace those traffic signals. and just that piece alone, we're anticipating it's going cost the city close to $75,000. and so that with the tree cleanup, there was another large tree that fell on the middle school that we needed to clean up and all of the overtime that our police officers and our public works. staff put and out of the wastewater treatment plant as well to make sure that the plants very well through the storm where anticipation well, over $100,000 in damages to the city. >>wow. well, let's talk a bit about this emergency declaration. how is this going to help? >>so the emergency declaration that the city council approved at our meeting last night. it does 2 things. it a point to me as the director of civil

defense and disaster, it declares that this emergency is stressing the city's financial resources and allows us to apply to the state to the california disaster assistance act funding to ask the state to help us cover these costs because it's really not something that our state budget can i say. >>you know, how can people help? >>during this time, it sounds like this is going to incur a huge cost for the city. of course, you have the state of emergency in place. so how can folks help? >>well, i think the communities that absolutely amazing right after the disaster citizens are helping the people are flipped over in their cars. their point branches out of the street. mean, really, this community is is so amazing and responded so throughout this entire disaster. and they've been checking in on the people who were injured. and we really appreciate that. at this point, i think it's really just checking on your neighbors and helping the people who did have branches come down or fences, damage or

other private property you know, that that they can help maybe an elderly neighbor or someone, you needs help cleaning up their own yard because the branches that came down across the whole city weren't were quite destructive. so atlanta. >>while you're here wanted to get your thoughts on what happened back in 2020. we know that scotts valley was also impacted by the massive czu complex fire. more recently you saw some pretty bad mud slides over the winter. how do you manage to make any progress in recovery efforts in those areas? >>czu fire didn't make it to scotts valley. even though the whole city was evacuated or most of it, which has which is quite impactful. so as far as costs wise, i think really we've just been focused on how do we prevent and that future wildfire through hardening and wildfire breaks and prevention work. but the 2 we had 2 mudslides 2 winters ago and we actually are just still finishing some of the repair work on those streets. and that's part of what makes this

might be the season for giving, but organizers for san francisco, salvation army's red kettle campaign say they're seeing a nearly 30% drop in donations compared to this time last year and it's affecting their toy. enjoy distribution kron four's. stephanie lin spoke with major matthew madsen with the salvation army to tell us more on how you can help out. >>unfortunate to hear about the numbers that tell us a bit about how this year's campaign is going. from your perspective. >>well, we're across the board about a 30% decrease in our kettle effort. and yet that iconic salvation army christmas, carol, started a little later this season, just because the way the calendar lays they add to that the atmospheric rivers and people not going to malls and you've got this perfect storm of a struggling to meet the need we've you can see behind me. i'm actually in our toy drive shot, getting things ready.

we're distributing to over 1600 kids today. but that money that we raise, that those kettles helps us do what we do all year round. so it's critical that we raise the funds at this critical time of i wish you say, you know, the decrease in donations is affecting the number of toys that you have that there. i mean, how much how much would you typically have at this point compared? >>to, you know, given the situation? well, normally at this point in the game where we're about a week out from christmas, just a little less, we generally about what we need and we had a christmas miracle is almost like a hallmark movie. reading word out in the very last minute, some folks came through and brought in toys that we need to meet the needs of those families that were serving today. >>but it's concern now is that the 30% decrease that we're seeing in our kettles. that's gonna arm what we do all year okay. got it. okay. so this is going to affect your outreach efforts and your support for the community. >>past the holiday season as well. correct? okay. got it so

well to how the donations are going to be distributed specific to the holiday season and then we can talk about what happens. a post holidays. >>absolutely. well, we're in the thick of things right now with passing out these these toys, the families who have come in signed up months ago at on christmas day, we're going to be delivering in just in san francisco alone. we're delivering with this army of volunteers to over 4,000 seniors who are homebound. and we do that every christmas day. every thanksgiving day. and so were some of the funds that come in for for that. we're going to be meeting those needs where where we have people every night in san francisco, there's over 750 people asleep in a salvation army bad. and at this time of year, they they need a little extra help. so we help them with all sorts of things during the holidays. the people that are living in our facilities. so the money is distributed where it's needed the most. and i can assure you

that wherever you're dropping money into a catalyst those funds stay in that community. and we we from the community with the community and for folks to to your point, know, they're not going out to the shopping malls as much anywhere. the not doing that. brick and mortar, traditional shopping. >>are there alternative ways that they can donate? absolutely. >>and san francisco, you can you can log into san francisco dot salvation army dot org. and you can see all the great things that we're doing in the city. you can also reach a about some of the new at things that we're doing it you are planning on doing in the city. you can find out about volunteer opportunities. of course, opportunities to given support the great work that we okay, fantastic and donate there as well. >>any special holiday programs that you're running right now, the size, the toy drive. >>we're just so busy just focusing on these events that this is we've got to get through today and things are going so smoothly and thank god tell the weatherman. thank you for the good forecast. we
