>> now as for wet weather is here for the holidays. we are tracking showers moving right on through the bay area. one of the busiest travel days of the year. we're taking a look at the post christmas day west. good afternoon, everybody. thank you so much for joining us on kron. 4 news at 4. i'm vicki liviakis wind and rain in our immediate forecast. >> taking a live look right now from our mount tam cam at a lot of what the i don't know. meteorologist call heavy precip kyla. what are looking at? well, when you get a of a like that, right after you start see up a little bit quicker. now we take a live look from the east bay. you can see it's just mostly gray skies that are out there.

>> but we're starting to see the light showershcome down in the north bay working their way towards the peninsula and then ultimately towards all of us across the bay area as we get into the evening. but here we are. so this is our next system that's moving in. it is set to bring some rain, some widespread rain certainly right now it's light. you can see the colors there like green. you don't see the oranges or any of the yellow. so very light across the peninsula now heading into the east bay and eventually will make its way down to the south bay to this is kind of tracking in northwest to southeast. all right. so the roads are a little slick out there. no doubt about it. wind is going to start picking up right now. you do see the flag not moving too much, though. it's not too bad over but that will be part of this to temperature wise. we've been a little warm today, actually, if you take a look at san jose at 64 degrees right now, lots of 50's out there, too. but we've been in the warm sector of this system. and in fact, our temperatures have been quite a bit warmer than they were this time yesterday and some spots you can see, you know, we're up like 8 degrees in hayward, 9 in san jose. so that's been part of this system. but now as this passes

sfo. also tracking flights in the east and the south bay's of flightaware reporting 45 delays for cancellations at oakland international and more than 50 delays and 2 cancellations at san jose international clippers. michael thomas was at oakland international airport this morning speaking with some travelers about the rush. >> it's the day after christmas in were just a few days away from new year's eve. you can imagine these airports are going to be packed. take a look. this is oakland airport. if you're heading out today or within the next few days, you can expect a lot of people to be waiting ahead of you and behind you. triple a says 119 million people are said to be traveling this holiday season, which is up 3 million from last year. and so is the number of people flying coming in at 7.9 million. but guess what else is up prices by about 4% with the average domestic ticket costing about $830. however, oakland airport is still expecting half a million people to pass through. some of those travelers. the san leandro high school girls basketball

scouts of america offer recycling services as well. so you have to check with your garbage company to remove it out of your home. >> and another tip is to make sure that you blow out all your candles before you leave the room or heading to bed. fallen candle can easily cause trees are paper to catch fire. >> a warning to beachgoers large waves are back. taking a live look now at pacifica beach, the a bay area currently under a high surf advisory. >> kron 4 meteorologist kyla grogan here to weigh in on. >> we're going to do this again. got a northwest swell that's been coming in. and that does bring unfortunately incredibly dangerous surf withk it. and as we kind of take a look here, you can see where that pocket of yellow is right to the north of us. and that's where wave heights are over 20 feet right now. we're not quite that high. if we zoom in. >> and we look off of the coast of point raise, we're sitting at about 14 feet, but i've watched these increase a little bit today and this advisory is not just for today

goes through the entire weekend until we get into our sunday afternoon about 4 o'clock. so that means that this will likely be increasing all along the way through this weekend. so we could see waves 20 to 30 feet again, right? we could see very big risk of sneaker waves that could come in. so very important that you never turn your back on the ocean. i would avoid the coast if you can for the next couple of days when the dangers there. but certainly if you have to be out there, be very careful. make sure anyone visiting knows about this, too. the other big story, of course, we've got some rain coming our way now. i know you it isn't quite here yet. so we're gonna see the showers overnight tonight into tomorrow. tomorrow will be a little drizzly. we'll stay unsettled. we get a little bit more as we head towards the weekend. looks like overnight saturday into sunday. but take your eye down here to monday. and it is a very different pattern that starts to show up. so just to show you how much rain we're looking out for wind, it's all said and done. you know, we're talking about between an inch and a half and 2 inches of rain in parts of our north day and

then less than that. but still significant about one and a quarter in san francisco. and you can see, you know, about an inch down in san jose. this as we get through the next 4 days. but the good news is, as i show you, this image show you really quickly, we do have the success of systems. but once we get through the weekend, here comes monday. and now this rain starts going to the north of us, right? we get a little high pressure in there to protect us. so vicki, i never wants to put the umbrellas doubt. it was nice. yesterday premediated sunshine. yeah. really did. but we are going to have a nice run next week. it looks like we start the new year. very, very nice. so i kind of like, but what it looks like once we got today, that's a great way to start it sunshine. thanks a lot. >> as engineers in santa cruz worked to assess the structural integrity of the wharf. there. >> officials are urging tourists and beachgoers to avoid the area. that's because all that debris continues to wash ashore after part of the work was wiped out. dangerous swells slammed into the structure monday causing 3 city workers to fall into the water to have more rescued by lifeguards. the other safely

to land. big waves drawing crowds and surfers across southern california. the coast there. it's a rare event for san diego residents to witness such high surf conditions. dan plante reports. >> as the holiday season rolls and so are the biggest waves of the year. and adrenaline rush reserved only for the elite of the surfing world, but enjoyed by all. while these waves break in here, right inside the cold like that, it's been probably 15 years or so. sometimes they break further out. he's breaking right hearings almost inside the cold. >> very rare, very rare and that it happened. you got to get out. take advantage the san diego coast line has always been a mecca for surfers, but usually not big wave surfers that's reserved for places like northern california or hawaii. however, on a day like today, the san diego coast line is firing on all cylinders. and yeah, better be ready think about the big waves in those crazy

at 4.30, as california grapples with the homeowners insurance crisis. the non-partisan state agency is releasing what it describes as urgent policy recommendations to help resolve the crisis. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace gives us a look at those recommendations and shares how insurance commissioner ricardo, lara is responding. >> the homeowners insurance market in california is in deep, deep trouble. federal nava not mincing words about california's homeowners insurance crisis. nava is the chair of the state, nonpartisan little hoover commission and oversight agency in charge of providing policy recommendations to the legislature. the governor and most recently, california insurance commissioner ricardo, the last year and a half 7 of the 12 major home insurance companies in california, including allstate, state farm and farmers insurance. >> have either limited their business within the state or in some cases stop selling new

policies altogether for homeowners living in some of california's most fire prone areas. that resulted in some californians struggling to find any insurance coverage and all a key requirement to carry a mortgage from home. for their part. insurance companies have said they have no other choice but to pause or stop selling policies out of concerns. they could face huge losses. should a major disaster like a wildfire destroyed homes and at-risk communities. but now the little hoover commission has released these policy recommendations, commissioners believe can help the state address the crisis we're trying to do with these recommendations say to the governor. >> the legislature into the insurance commissioner, here are some practical steps that you can take now. to provide some relief to homeowners and moving forward to provide for a more stable insurance market for all californians among the commission's recommendations, one that would require insurance companies to incorporate a homeowner's fire mitigation efforts, one underwriting and setting rates. if you spend the money

to make it on fire safe. >> and you do it based on the certain rules that have been accepted by the state of california and the insurance industry. >> to help reduce your another recommendation would allow insurance companies to incorporate the cost of reinsurance when setting rates. >> in a nutshell, reinsurance is often described as insurance for your insurance company. it's the process where your insurer can transfer at least part of risk to another company to help offset any potential losses. and then there's the recommendation to allow insurance companies to consider what's known as catastrophe. modeling with public oversight, which in a nutshell will allow them to factor in climate change and environmental risks. when setting prices. >> the ultimate goal is to get the insurance carriers can come in and compete, where they believe that there is enough certainty in california's market that they are willing to come back in and make investments and provide policies to people who are going to get the scripts during an interview with us over the summer insurance commissioner. lot of spoke to us about his insurance reform

taking live look right now at traffic on donner summit in soda springs. a chp says. >> you know, always remember to drive slowly in order to arrive to your destination safely, especially if you're driving on icy roads. yesterday, families and friends were jumping into the holiday spirit. in tahoe. many spent their christmas day, the snow and on the slopes. we spoke with families who say enjoying the snow is the perfect winter tradition. >> i started when i was 4 years old. i've never had a season pass, but i do but like twice a year once once an chris's and went one for every like around march was skiing in general. see as they get older and more advanced seeing will probably go to different homes. but this the starting point. >> while the resort wasn't at full capacity yesterday, officials anticipate that it will be busy in the coming days. looking a lot like winter wipeout in parts of tahoe. this a live look right now from palisades kron four's chief meteorologist lawrence karnow joins us now with a

look. >> a winter storm conditions. how about that? you know, talking a lot of folks want to get up there and enjoy the holidays. but we've had these storms kind of rolling in with just a brief break in between each one, making it hard to get up there. >> and again, that snow coming down lake level. you can see it out there right now. the snow is falling outside and they are chaining up on 80 50. if you're headed up there, be prepared for that. you're likely going to see some delays headed the high country as all that snow once again coming down. and it's gonna be picking up as we head throughout the night tonight. so we're going to be affected by these storms. i thing right through sunday, maybe even a monday morning before things begin to slow down heavy snow expected overnight tonight and into early tomorrow morning. some gusty winds to go along with that. in fact, some of the gusts over the crest, maybe over 100 miles an hour. so you get a high-profile vehicle. you have a truck of any kind. got to be careful. head over the mountain tops are going to see things really blown around up there. that snow level at about 6,000 feet expecting upwards of about 20 inches of snow up there. that's a lot of snow. expect

those delays if you're heading that direction as they will continue with more storms on and off as we head through the next few days. looking up there right now, you can see some of that snow falling in around lake tahoe. just you make your way over the summit. you start to see all the white there as we get toward lake and plenty of snow up there right now and more on the way as we head throughout the night tonight, it's going to be picking up as we head through the night as well. 33 degrees almost freezing and south lake tahoe. 39 and try 35 at home right now. 34 at incline village the big picture still looking impressive. some storms continue to roll on shore. this one just getting going it is going to ramp up overnight tonight and it's tomorrow morning. so we're going to see some heavy amounts of rain. winter weather advisory remains in effect for the sierra nevada until noon on friday. then there may be a brief break, but then things to see some more storm clouds roll in. i think not a bad day, at least for the first part on saturday, a much stronger storm headed on the way saturday night and into sunday. all right, lawrence,

in the north bay, an investigation is underway after a body was discovered at a campground in bodega bay. >> the sonoma county sheriff says tuesday morning the u.s. coast guard call them about a possible dead body. skeletal remains had washed up as good. a good dunes, campground. not clear where they came from, how long they were there. the identity of the body has not revealed. santa's a police arresting a man they say was operating a residential brothel. 44 year olds in was taken into custody last week after a months long investigation. police say the brothel was located on south 24th street near east santa clara street in the benita park neighborhood of san jose officers found 2 women inside the residence and recovered about $10,000 in cash. police say was arrested and booked into the santa clara county main jail for pimping and pandering. in the east gamestop in san leandro is boarded up after thieves rammed a car into it. police

say the break-in happened tuesday morning at the shop in the fashion fair shopping center. police arrested one of the alleged thieves while others got away, police discovered the same group had burglarized leo's family restaurant on floor esta boulevard. your washington avenue, some of the items stolen were recovered by police. police across the country are warning people of a scam growing in popularity. it's called brushing. now. this happens when unexpected packages arrive with a qr code. some packages even suggest how you can find out who the package is from. but the qr code, it's actually a plan to get your personal information like your bank account details. credit card numbers and log-in credentials. >> so we just tell people to, you know, if you don't want throw it away. but the biggest thing to remember is don't get really curious about safe. there's a qr code. don't scan you don't know where it's going. >> if you do receive a suspicious package, the better

those waves in the background is the half moon bay, some large waves crashing along the coastline. i'm going to be some huge swells out there as we head through the night tonight, probably over the next few days. got to be careful out at the coast. temperatures. it is cool in half moon bay. 55 degrees and a 55 in santa rosa. 57 right now in concord. 59. and so mostly cloudy skies and live more still. 64 degrees. pretty pleasant, mild in san jose. 60 in oakland and 58 degrees in san francisco. all right. speaking waves, here we go. here's our latest models picking up on some of the swells off the coastline. you start to see some of the areas shaded in yellow. there some larger waves that are now moving in along the coastline. those waves there, those are some big ones to 27 the coastline near across the city eureka to 25 feet the bay area, not as big just yet, but we can have a chance. some of the building as we head throughout the weekend. so there could be some 20 foot plus waves moving along the coastline. and you got to watch out for that specially out toward the water's edge. right now. we've got a storm system just beginning to make its way in to see that rain and showers begin moving out there right now. but well,

long train of moisture you can see well out in the pacific. you start to get subtropical tap little atmospheric river event trying to develop out there as well. and so we've got a whole other area of low pressure just developing out there. much larger storm going to be moving in, especially we head in toward lot a part of the weekend. so, yeah, we've got some plans. we're in for a wet period. i think next week we start out the new year. that's about probably a lot of sunshine and dry conditions. but yeah, the waves watch out. you got to be careful out there along the coastline. we've had some unfortunate incident. some people losing their lives being dragged away by some of the ways you want to be one of those folks. so be careful out there along the coastline. stay away from the media. water's edge. some very large swells expected over the next couple days. all right. also going to see a lot of wind overnight tonight. it's gonna start to ramp up as that front moves a little closer. yeah. maybe some 30, maybe some 40 mile an hour gusts along the coastline as we head toward the middle of the night and then by tomorrow morning, they'll begin to back off just a little bit by tomorrow afternoon. things begin to settle down somewhat. that's some good news with this storm system. yes, going to wrap things up as we head through the night tonight, more snow up in the sierra nevada. more
