karnow who's joining us right yeah, very dangerous out there on the this one of those things you don't want to get out there on the water's stay back. if you want to go check, it's really need to see. but you want to stay away from the will the 8 years. yeah, watching. people get lost. often bad things can happen a hurry out there tonight. storm clouds once again rolling in and we've got a series of storms off the coastline. >> and that's going to generate more that large swell that's going to be moving in toward the beaches of not only for tomorrow, right into the weekend. so high surf advisory remains in effect until 4 o'clock in the afternoon on sunday. so if you do plan to travel to the coast, just be aware, expecting some very large swells over 20 feet, average going to be loving that again as the way we're going to be running very high. here's a look at some of the waves right now along the coastline right off our coast. not all that large. we're seeing some of the swells to 14 feet. that's a pretty decent swell. but you get a little further to the north and all of a sudden you're talking 27 feet and then further off the coastline, there's more storms generating this. well is out there in the
6:33 pm
middle pacific. and then we start to see more this well as moving toward. so the next 24 to 36 hours, we've got some 24 footers and large swells continuing. so the idea is that these storms out there in the middle of pacific are generating the swells. you get the winds out over open waters blowing across the distance. we call a and that's when you start to see all those beginning to build as those waves blown office and they get very large start to make their way toward the coastlines. you gotta be careful out toward the water's edge. big storms moving in and now we've got that rain moving into. so we've got some a moderate to some heavy amounts of rainfall now beginning to make its way it along the peninsula this morning, atmospheric river events. the waters going to be piled up in the coming days. but the bay area looking at that high surf anomaly here all the way down the coastline in the southern california, los angeles also looking at some very large waves. so be careful anywhere really around the state. temperatures for forecast highs tomorrow. i don't think is going to be a rain out tomorrow. may be starting out with a couple of scattered showers early in the morning and then by the afternoon. yeah, i think we're going to see those clouds part just a little bit. rain will come to an end, i think may pick up
6:34 pm
again by tomorrow evening, at least in the north bay. but generally some 50's and some 60's over the next couple days. so we're going to see off and on showers. in fact, we've got some more showers are coming for tomorrow morning. another chance, some scattered showers mainly to the north on saturday. a stronger storm system on the way, though, saturday night and into sunday. >> thanks, lauren well. those big waves are also drawing in crowds and servers across the southern california coast. it's a rare event for san diego residents to witness such high surf conditions. dan plante reports. >> as the holiday season rolls and so are the biggest waves of the year. and adrenaline rush reserved only for the elite of the surfing world, but enjoyed by all. while these waves bre k in here, right inside the cold like that, it's been probably 15 years or so. sometimes they break further out. he's breaking right hearings almost inside cold. >> very rare, very rare. and when it appens, you got to get out. take advantage the san diego coast line has
6:35 pm
always been a mecca for surfers, but usually not big wave surfers that's reserved for places like northern california or hawaii. however, on a day like today, the san diego coast line is firing on all cylinders. and you better be ready think about the big waves in those crazy surfers near. would never do like that would not when we are driving. the waves were so big guys like they're going to engulf everybody. he's standing out and looking at but they haven't yet. good christmas miracle. is yeah. but for every person who who's in oz of the power of mother nature. >> there are also those who dive right in on afraid. and in this case. >> kind of unimpressed. so what do you think been doing out playing in the surf surf just a few just all a good way. isn't it a little frightening out there? i socialize. so this is like small, small tickets for me.
6:36 pm
>> it may be small to him, but big enough to do some additional damage to the ob pier. according to the lifeguards, it happened again. another big wave knocked off another support near the end of the pier. it doesn't really matter since it closed forever. but another reminder of the absolute power of the mighty pacific ocean. this is just awesome. this is why wake up in the morning. we don't get this kind of weather here in san diego. very often. we get and you got to get out. take advantage of a look at these people. there's hundreds thousands of people here just enjoying the service is just beautiful. is awesome. >> over the holiday week, president biden has signed 50 bills into law. one backed by activists. paris hilton protect teenagers living in residential treatment facilities. another sets anti hazing standards on college campuses. plus, another prevents members of congress from collecting pensions if convicted of crimes related to public corruption. biden also signing a bill making the bald

cooking along. >> at a great rate, that's the 20th month in a row that the unemployment rate has been below 4%. >> americans citing different data. >> my grocery bill a week is over $700. 5 people. it's crazy. i mean, everything supply 50% and they can't afford even take your family out. the now more. got a pretty good job. the economy is is really bad right now that a $14 an hour. >> currently, i'm working 7 days in a row and it's barely enough to make ends meet the economy's horrible. they tell us every day it's good. i shop. it's not good. the disconnect noteworthy, even to the experts i've never seen. the economy ere 2 people are in can be in a room screaming one screaming, the economy's bad one screening. the economy is great and they're both right. it really is tale of 2 economies, right? it is 2 different economic reality is that people are experiencing. you happen to be invested in the stock market. >> that might be doing really well. but if you are a renter and you see the increased cost
6:40 pm
of renting, for example, then you're really feeling that stress partly to blame america's new gig, economy people. are you doing some get jobs? so they're working, but they're not working at the best quality jobs. >> the ones that are family sustaining a growing number like matthew kalish, relying on side hustles to get by. he works overnight at a new jersey hotel. then clocks in for his day job as a u.s. postal worker. i mean, we're sometimes at the end of the week where, you know, the big bills are paid, but we're waiting till friday to go grocery shopping things like that because there's only so much money to go around even with both jobs because even slowing inflation means prices are still going up. so it doesn't mean prices are going to drop necessarily. it just means that they might stabilize or grow more slowly. if your prices actually start to go down. that actually called a deflationary economy. and that's not a good thing from an economic perspective in september. with inflation hitting a three-year low. >> the fed made its first cut

to interest rates. the u.s. economy is in a good place and and our decision today is designed to keep it there. expectations were high, but the average 30 year mortgage rate only dipped briefly to 6.2% before stubbornly sticking up for americans under a staggering record. 1.7 trillion dollars in credit card debt. it barely made a difference credit card. debt is high and rising and the average interest rate on a credit card in the u.s. is somewhere between 2025%. some as high as 36%. but americans don't seem to be tightening their belts when it comes to holiday shopping or an indulgences. like meal deliveries, expected to top 95 billion dollars this year. i'm definitely scratching my head of the people's willingness to pay for the convenience of meal delivery and things like that. not only are prices generally higher when you order delivery service, that's on top of 30% food inflation that we've seen over the past 5 years. if all the traditional economic data

fields as reliable as jack sparrow's compass, maybe it's time to look at that other famous indicator, the men's underwear index. >> which suggests men don't replace their briefs in boxers as often in tough economic times. it pains stock is any things are on the upswing for 2025. >> still ahead on kron, 4 news at 6, the sierra is under a winter snow advisory will hear more on the conditions there. if you're planning on heading up that haha. after the christmas break. the forty-niners were back on the field. for their monday night matchup with the lions. but they're also starting to lose. look ahead 2025 season. ben ross will explain next sports.
6:45 pm
well, the forty-niners season ending pretty much the same way. it started filled with injuries. now, just 2 games left in the season. the team is trying to heal some guys up from next year. head coach kyle shanahan announced today that both trent williams and dre greenlaw will be shut down for the rest of the season. williams was officially placed on injured reserve with that ankle injury he ends up playing just 10 games this season greenlaw dealing with calf soreness which forced him out of sunday's game against the dolphins. you played just 2 games this year after returning from a torn sentences with williams going on ir. that's now 15 players the niners have had to put on injured reserve this season. but that's nothing compared to what their next opponent the detroit lions have put 22
6:46 pm
players on ir this year. 22. and yet they found a way to go 13 2 controlling their own destiny for the top seed in the nfc that has really impressed kyle shanahan. >> a much different heard about other injuries, which is a huge credit to them. cause. they've had a ton. was expecting it to look lot worse expecting it to look lot worse than it actuall they're still number one team in the league on 3rd down number 6 in red zone. you know, the way that they play the and they've been banged up the most on the line, a linebacker, but the way they play there on the way they rush the passer, you know, just individually missing couple good guys. but collectively, they still do it at a very high level and compared last year, just the coverage better. they've added some new guys, you know, drafting young corner, bringing some guys in there. so they're they're further along and defense and they were last year. this time said. >> of course, these 2 teams met up in the nfc championship game less than 11 months ago. it looked like the lions were going to advance to their first ever super bowl. they
6:47 pm
led 24 7 at halftime. if the niners came all the way back to detroit, 34 31 despite the forty-niners struggles this season, the lions, we're definitely not taking anything for granted on monday. their head coach dan campbell knows this still a talented team. >> i think we know exactly where we're at. and we also know the team were getting ready, goes to go face. i haven't done a deep dive yet. i know they've had injuries but also know they said coach over there's an outstanding coach that can run their system are defense for a long time. this defense is a top notch defense. they always have been it doesn't matter where they're at and offensively this scheme in the system as they're they're going to find your weaknesses and try to exploit them and they'll just keep pick pick, pick it out until the start getting explosives. the lean on the run game and play paso. we've got our work cut out for us is not going to be some, you know, this. is this going to be a tough game? know, we're getting ready to walk into we know we have to win. we have to win and it's on the next one.
6:48 pm
>> well, remember, way back 2 days ago in san jose state in south florida mates whole game history by going 5 overtimes in the hawaii bowl. that record lasted less than 48 hours. pittsburgh in toledo's today played 6 ot in the above sport. the game above sports bullpens was up. 46 40 for the 5th overtime. >> when toledo tied at courtesy of tucker gleason on newton's in overtime. number 6, gleason connects with junior van der ross with 6th scoring pass of the day. so toledo up pitch, trying to tie and send it to a 7th overtime. but julian duggar could not avoid the pressure. his pass falls incomplete in the end zone. we do wins. 48 46 in a bowl record 6 over time. so you like football hof. here's a whole bunch of football for you so much. i mean, i'm a fan, too, but i think like during these times of year, everyone wants to come inside and kind of watch together. yeah, the nation's spore, i mean, don't come from a few.
6:49 pm
but they totally, you know, right now it feels like football. this is what it's supposed to be. this is the time. yeah. all right. well, thanks so much, but we'll have more coming up later. >> well, a lot of families and friends are jumping into the holiday spirit in tahoe for some sports there. many spent their christmas day up in the snow and on the slopes. we spoke with families who say enjoying the snow is the perfect winter tradition. >> started when i was 4 years old. i've never had a season pass, but i do like twice a year once once an chris's and went one for every like around was skiing in general. see as they get older and more advanced seeing will probably go to different mountains. but this is starting point. >> the resort wasn't at full capacity yesterday. officials anticipate that it will be busy in the coming days has more visitors head to the slopes after the holiday. and if you're heading up to the sierra chp says always remember to drive slowly and to arrive to your winter destination safely. now lets

turn it over to kron 4 chief meteorologist lawrence karnow who is tracking it all has more on that winter weather. yeah, headed up there. they are chained up there tonight, 80 50. we've got some snow that is moving in. >> right now, it will be intensifying throughout the night tonight. so you got to be careful headed up there. if you're looking toward the weekend, as we've got a series of storms could impact the sierra nevada in the bay area to still have about 6,000 feet. that means going to affected. if you head over the passes there, upwards of 20 inches of snow expected in the next 24 to 36 hours. but delays. you can expect that some gusty winds maybe over 100 miles per hour across some of the peaks. right now. here's the very latest on the doppler radar. you can see the boy, the tahoe area already getting that snow piling up, starting some rain and foothills toward grass valley. but get to about 6,000 feet. all of a sudden that turns into snow. temperatures as you might expect. the freezing point right now at incline village, 32 at home 34 south lake tahoe. overall, the pattern still looking pretty stormy in the high country. in fact, the storm start to really ramp up throughout the
