laws take effect in just days. the changes coming for renters and drivers. >> it said. >> good morning. thank you so much for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news. i'm stephanie lin. it's saturday december the 28th. let's get a check on the weather with kathy trafton. good morning, cathy. good morning, stephanie. it's a lovely day. you've got some raindrops falling in many spots the bay area. but i i would start you out with airport issues because this is one of the biggest travel days of the year. >> here's a look at sfo looking beautiful in sparkly. but if you look a little closer, it's 56 degrees. we're in great shape. no delays reported here, but there are a few delays across the country that will affect your travels if you're heading there. new york city jfk airport, we're looking at some delays there. i think for cancellations

about 93 delays and then you head to dallas fort worth and it looks like we have some delays there and that's a concern they had. i think 263 delays and over 90 cancellations, little closer to home. it's beautiful, but a little bit drippy, some of the camera lens is up from our live cams are showing a lot of rain drops. here's a view of the golden gate bridge. of course, the road is slick. and so if you're heading on out, that's going to be a concern to careful because the roads are wet. so today you can look forward some light. rain is mainly in the north bay, but we are seeing some rain drops south of the golden gate as well. and by tomorrow morning, both see heavy rain, heavier rain, stronger wind and that'll come through quickly. so that's a good news will clear things out. and certainly by the evening will be done with the rain. the high surf advisory continues till tomorrow morning. that's at 04:00am and we've got quite a week coming up. it's the end of 2020 for the beginning of

2025, we're looking at clear skies and some cool morning temperatures. but right now back for neuse with stephanie. all right. cathy, thanks so much. a new report says nationwide homeless numbers increased by more than 100,000 people within the last year. >> meantime, in santa clara county officials plan to clear more homeless encampments in the coming days potentially impacting hundreds of people. prof was jack moment reports. >> one week from friday, this notice posted along a several mile long stretch of coyote creek. this one-off story votes as sweeps will start in the new year. these people are criminals. these people are down on their luck. >> these people have lost houses, lost jobs, lost, loved ones shot. cartwright has been spending her holidays, telling the hundreds of people along coyote creek that they need to get moving. >> the silicon valley water board recently approved a ban on all camping along their waterways, citing safety and hygiene concerts. the band starts on january second, but it's unclear how quickly law enforcement will force people

out of their tents. if you're sweeping people out of the creeks where they supposed to go and if you don't have any answer, you should be sweeping people out of anywhere. shelter space is routinely fall in the south bay and the number of people living on the streets is increasing. according to the latest housing and urban development data. >> nearly three-quarters of a million people were found living on the streets across the u.s. california has by far the largest number of people living on the streets. a total of 160,000 more recorded this year. cartwright's not surprised. not at all. and i'm sure that's an under count. everyone anyone who's ever counted knows that's an undercount into the bike path. she hands out supplies and some belated christmas cheer. but you know what? i'm not going to tell you a flavor there. it's horrible man. >> it's horrible. murphy watson has never been on house before, but he ended up here just 6 weeks ago. he was evicted after his roommate who paid rent was hospitalized. many some more substantial. i mean, i could go to a shot of it. >> if this, if this hope at the it's like you got wrap for

they can agree to it. so it didn't. he? >> a fair contract in san jose jacmel but kron 4 news. >> in the north bay, the temple pie union high school district settled multiple abuse cases for more than 17 million dollars. the lawsuit says tennis coach in normandy bureau go sexually abuse students in the early 2, thousands. he was convicted in 2019 on 60 counts of child molestation and is now in prison in a statement to kron 4, the district said, quote, we hope this brings closure to all those involved. police in oakland are investigating a deadly shooting. they found the victim thursday afternoon on foothill boulevard near the franklin recreation center. the person was shot several times. no arrests have been made yet. anyone with information should give oakland police a call. and cleanup continues in santa cruz after the worst collapsed when dangerous well slammed into the structure as kron four's gayle ong reports. the hope is to reopen the wharf in a couple of weeks.

>> incident on monday really the largest swell that we've seen 30 years. and as a result, santa cruz city leaders say about 150 feet at the end of the war was destroyed after dangerous swells slammed into the structure just before 01:00pm monday while the coast was under a high surf warning, according to the national weather service wave heights were about 30 to 40 feet with the highest breakers around 60 feet at the time. so that combined with the end of the war being. under construction. >> and really damaged weakened from previous year storms. that was really the vulnerable. why the impact causing 3 construction workers to fall into the water along with the dolphin restaurant and a restroom that part of the pier was already closed since january of this year. right now, our immediate concern is the balance of the world open and our businesses operating again as soon as possible. the santa cruz city manager at some 400 employees will be receiving funds to

offset the amount lost during the closure. that may include help with rent in the meantime, crews are working to reopen. the wharf is too critical path items. the first is removal of the heavy equipment. >> that fell into the ocean as a result of the incident were working with power. engineering. the contractor on the project as well as other salvage experts as to how best to do that. that's priority number one, that heavy equipment potentially jeopardizes this ability the rest of the as for the future of the borth, i don't think we can speak with any confidence at this point as to whether rebuilding. >> that section of the worst is feasible. or the appropriate thing to in light of the increased frequency and power of the storm events that we're experiencing along our coastline, warm-up ourselves on every coastal community of the world. how some version this conversation going and there will be several conversations going main beach in calif, char.

>> expected to reopen as early as saturday. but santa cruz officials are asking the public to avoid the beaches until monday. there's a ton of debris out on the beach that still needs to be cleared out in the studio. gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> and a reminder this new year's eve you can get on the vta in the south bay for free. the free service ride started at 08:00pm until 5 p 05:00am rather and a new year's day. and in san francisco, you can also hop on muni for free this new year's eve buses take people home from 8 to next tuesday night through 5 wednesday morning. in san francisco, an alleged serial shoplifter faces more severe charges them before this morning. this is the city's first case filed under prop 36, which toughens penalties for certain retail theft crimes. on christmas eve, the man allegedly stole medications worth more than $400 from a walgreens inouye valley. instead of being cited and released. the suspect now faces felony charges. the law went into effect 10 days ago. and many of other many other

new laws are set to go into effect at the start of the year, including the daylighting long, which targets people parking too close to a crosswalk. reporter chip yost gives us a closer look. >> secretary, please call the roll. >> one of the new laws passed this year aims to address the challenge of prosecuting people for breaking into cars primarily the bill closes the locked door. new poll. >> which is a nonsensical barrier holding all auto burglaries accountable, no longer. the bill's author says will prosecutors have to prove a car's doors were locked to prosecute someone for auto burglary? another law that goes into full effect january 1st after being passed in 2023. >> could make parking in your neighborhood a little more challenging by limiting how close you can park to a crosswalk. >> before 13 would make intersections safer by widening sight lines, giving drivers better vision. one looking out for pedestrians.

>> bird flu continues to cause problems across the country. not only are we dealing with an egg shortage. the illness has spread to house cat reporter nancy loo has the latest. >> health officials are urgently warning all pet owners about raw foods and exposure to wildlife in the newest case, oregon health officials say a house cat contracted h 5 n one by eating northwest naturals raw and frozen pet food, which is sold nationwide. the portland based company has voluntarily recalled the frozen turkey line linked to the death

earlier this month. health officials in la county reported 2 house cat deaths both had consumed raw milk linked to a statewide recall due to infected dairy herds. the virus has been detected on farms in at least 16 states and hundreds of herds are quarantined in washington state. the deaths of 20 big cats, including a tiger in just the past month, according to the facility's director, all had become infected with bird flu. now dozens of human bird flu cases have also been reported in california, oregon, washington and other states. but so far, no deaths or known spread from human to human contact. >> i strongly advise people not to drink raw milk. this is not a good way to immunize yourself against h 5 n one and it might be a very good way to infect yourself with a massive dose of h 5, 1, that could

want to stay away from the water's edge? probably not a great day to go swimming, especially if you're an inexperienced swimmer because it is really dangerous conditions high temperatures today mainly around 60. whether you're in san francisco, oakland, a little bit warmer than that in san jose. and primarily we will see the rain and the north bay and some light rain across other areas as well. but it's not a big deal. not like the big storms we had before. are there more storms in our near future? of course, there are. let's put the computer models into action here. so this is this morning about now. and we put it in motion. here we are sunday morning. so this is the bigger storm. this is weny or whether this is windier. and it's also bringing some snow to the sierra. but it's also going to move quickly and really, this is our last hurrah for the year in terms of wet weather. so say goodbye to the wet weather by sunday night and then we you have a ridge building in the ridge

will protect us from the incoming storms and deflect those storms. way up to our north. and we stay dry for the rest of the year and we stay dry for the beginning of the year as well. so that's great news for our new year's eve forecast. future rain totals and from through the weekend. well, it's a lot if you're up in eureka, an inch and 3 quarters, about half of not even half an inch in san francisco. let's go a little bit closer into the san francisco bay area. and we will see the temps that are of our rainfall amounts are not terribly significant. the most in the north bay, 7 tenths of an inch in santa rosa about point for 5 half moon bay and only 607 inch in livermore. so not terribly rainy. but once we're done with this weekend, then things really start to change change. we're going to go for some dry conditions and we're going to go for some clear skies and chilly mornings starting next week. stephanie, back to you. all right, cathy, thanks so much. openai is planning to transform into a for-profit

company in a blog post, the company's board said it plans to replace its existing structure and become instead into what's called a public benefit corporation. that's a for-profit company that operates for the good of society. the company says bloomberg says the ceo sam altman will get a 7% stake in the for-profit venture. and when republicans take control of washington in january, they say it's back to the office for federal workers. washington correspondent maddie beer-temple has more on the push to resume in-person work. and the challenge is that it could face in court. currently about half of the country's more than 2 million federal workers work from home in some capacity. >> the incoming administration's goal to get them back in the office could face legal challenges. >> empty office buildings in the nation's capital. some lawmakers say should be a thing of the past. the federal government. >> pays for too much square footage for office space, kentucky republican congressman james comer says a lack of in-person work hearst

government services for your senior with trouble with social security. it's almost impossible to get someone on the phone. the social security administration recently signed a contract to extend remote work protections until 2029. >> comer and president-elect donald trump say that needs to end a lot of federal workers to get back to the office in person or be terminated from his job of >> but the federal workers union has promised to push back. >> the american federation of government employees said in a statement, quote, collective bargaining agreements entered into by the federal government are binding and enforceable under the law. the union says 54% of federal workers are required to work in person every day. and for those who don't, they say, quote, telework and remote work are tools that have helped the federal government increased productivity and efficiency. this is something that probably going to head to court. >> the federal workers union says it will be ready to enforce its contracts if the incoming trump administration doesn't honor them.

best known for her role in the 1968 film, romeo and juliet has died. her performance is julia earned her a golden globe and international acclaim. his career included roles as diverse as mary and jesus of nazareth. horror classics like it and black christmas. she is survived by her husband, musician david glenn. i sleet 3 children and a grandson. her family remembers her as a remarkable person who's warmth, wisdom and pure kindness, uche the lives of all. who knew her. olivia hussey was 73 years old. bite your company. lyft is suing the city of san francisco. the company claims it was over charged 100 million dollars in taxes over the last 5 years. the suit filed last week says the fees paid by riders to drivers are not part of the company's should not be taxed. lyft says it makes most of its money from the fees. it charges drivers. the company wants refunds for overpaid taxes as well as interest and penalties. the city says it will review the complaint. traveling can get stressful

and to help ease the anxiety. sfo now has a sensory room. check this out. it offers a so-called calming and soothing area for relaxation and even has a life-size airplane cabin experience to help families prepare their kids for a flight. the new sensory room is in harvey milk terminal one which serves alaska, delta southwest, jetblue and frontier airlines. it's open from 05:00am to 11:00pm. definitely looks very calm there. volunteers are decorating flows for the rose parade. artistic entertainment services is in charge of all that. the company has 16 floats in the parade this year. they are being decorated in pasadena. every inch of the floats must be covered in a natural materials. that's one of the rules volunteers cut, prepare, sort unglued, dried flowers, not seeds and shells to those floats. just completed a one float decorating. we have about 14 floats being decorated by volunteer decorators starting at 08:00am every day this week. >> you can catch the rose

that's okay because we can switch to my source in just a minute. but it's going to be great. little bit more rain over this weekend. so it's rain tonight. it's rain, especially tomorrow and it will be high surf and then things will just turn around. so it's just beautiful in the meantime, we've got this light rain is mainly a north bay event, but we do see raindrops across the bay area and the high surf advisory, of course, will be kids continuing until this latest storm goes away because the latest storm will bring heavy rain that's tomorrow morning with some stronger wind and then by 04:00am the high surf advisory is gone and we'll see a big change just for the end of the year and into the early part of the brand new year. so here's with a high surf advisory right along the pacific all the way down past monterrey and 18 to 25 foot waves. so the surface still really high but not like the monstrous waves we less than a week ago at 40 foot high. so it's a change and that's good

in 10 in terms of temperatures. very mild right now in many areas are in the 50's. and 57, for instance, in nevado and looking at 52 degrees in calistoga. there's plume of moisture heading in our direction. this fueling the raindrops that we're seeing. it's heavier rain, of course. the further north you go, seattle, portland have a lot more. lot more new week and then we're getting. but our future rainfall totals through tomorrow, not terribly impressive. about two-thirds three-quarters of an inch in some spots across the north bay. less than that as we start to head southward of less than half an inch in san francisco hundredths of an inch for so that's not much for the rest of the weekend and then we can say goodbye to these really rainy conditions because things are going to turn around. and here's of the yet forecast model showing you the rain today. the rain tomorrow, boom, rain and somt snow in the sierra and then watch as a ridge builds in the

ridge will deflect all the storms to our north will keep everything dry across the bay area. even this beautiful wound up storm. nice counter clockwise circulation and up. it goes in terms of our temperatures today. numbers mainly in the 50's pretty much everywhere. so it's going to be just great whether an elder, not it. 59 degrees reaching 60 in places such as millbrae and burlingame, pretty similar in redwood city at 62 degrees. as warm as 66% is a that's one of the warmest spots not quite as warm in the east bay this time of year. it's only 63 degrees in pleasanton and 59 for brenda and looking 60 degrees for you on bills. so we're in great shape. we're going to be seeing some dry weather coming up. the all important new year's forecast is coming up in just a few minutes right now. it's back to stephanie for news. kathy, thank you so much. well, you can expect to see more chp officers in oakland, governor gavin newsom announcing the crime crackdown on friday. >> our capitol correspondent eytan wallace explains.

>> statewide california highway patrol organized retail crime task force in 2024 alone, it recovered over 13 million dollars in stolen goods, arrested more than 1400 suspects and conducted 777 investigations. he says his decision to add additional chp patrols and resources to areas he describes as regional hotspots, including bakersfield, bernardino, san francisco and oakland helped get those results. but specifically in the city of oakland, he says he will discontinue his decision to an additional chp patrols. if the city does not take quick action to change its policy that says an officer can engage in a police pursuit. only if the suspect is believed to have committed a violent crime or if there is a probable cause. the suspect is in possession of a gun. otherwise no pursuit. newsom says that policy hampers officers ability to do their job. this extreme. >> pursuit policy. you can run a red light. you can come close to sideswiping a school

bus during the morning hours right in front of a police officer and the pursuit policy in oakland says we can't. we cannot foresee that suspect. we cannot engage that suspect. we need to see that policy changed. oakland council members and attendants say they are working on changing the policy. is my hope that in the new council that we can get this time in the next 30 days or >> looking ahead, statewide newsom believes a dozen bipartisan retail theft, new laws he signed earlier this fall will make a difference, including one that will increase penalties for those who steal more than $50,000 in items. >> in another allowing prosecutors to combine the value of multiple stolen items to meet the larger penalty for a felony. still, newsom defended his stance against prop 36. the 2024 ballot measure that voters overwhelmingly passed to increase truck treatment and increase penalties for some theft and drug offenses. newsom expressed concerns over lack of state money to fund

prop 36 and he believes it could lead to mass incarceration. but republicans hope he helps implement prop 36. now that the past and now that it's law, he continues to look at prop 36 with skepticism. >> and for my colleagues in the legislature, i just a couple weeks ago sent a letter to the governor requesting that he fully support prop 36 and important. >> and we should have a better idea about how newsom plans to fund prop 36 when he unveils his preliminary spending plan in january reporting a tonn wallace kron. 4 news. >> interim oakland mayor nikki fortunato bas thank governor gavin newsom for extending the chp partnership into the new year. according to best oakland has seen crime fall. 34% this year is she says chp is help. opd can continue to respond to violent crime. chp focuses on traffic violations, car theft, sideshows and illegal gun seizures. the

results are in from chp is a holiday max inforcement period. in the meantime, from christmas eve to christmas day, officers arrested more than 300 drivers for dui. that's less compared to the more than 900 people arrested last year. chp officers also issued more than 3800 citations, including speeding tickets and seat belt violations. officers pulled over a suspected dui driver traveling the wrong way on i 5.88 happened on christmas eve. the driver was just hours away from his 21st birthday. it is unclear if he faces charges. the chp reminds people to celebrate responsibly and to use rideshare services. officers arrested a carjacking suspect from san francisco. he's accused of shooting a sheriff's deputies in sacramento county. call that stefani and has the latest. >> news of all of this is that nobody was hurt, especially the sacramento county sheriff's office says just before 11, a deputy was patrolling the area of sunrise and kaluma when the deputy spotted a vehicle matching the

description of a vehiclm involved in a carjacking in san francisco, the deputy waited for other deputies to assist. >> as soon as they lit up their emergency lights, that vehicle started to speed away. the driver actually reached out from the window and fired several shots back toward the deputies. the sheriff's office tells us at least 2 shots were fired from a grace id and a handgun was used. >> the deputies did not fire back and continue to pursue the vehicle for under a minute. >> the driver then pulled over and surrendered. >> this is the ending. we always hope for. is that peaceful surrender no matter what happened. we want that person safely in custody without any more incidents. the sheriff's office says the 34 year-old suspect was put behind bars and is a convicted felon. >> he was booked on multiple charges, including attempted murder. he is a convicted felon >> and no business owning a farm in the first place. much less stealing a car and carjacking people. last night. deputies were canvassing the area. >> they were out there last night for several hours. a lot of road closures in that area,

obviously just to cover their tracks to see if those bullets struck anything could not find any vehicles hit could not find the property. that was it. obviously that's part no people were hit. >> it was a quick test. a funny and reporting for us. meantime, the irs is reminding people to prepare for the upcoming tax season financial experts suggest contributing as much as possible to your retirement accounts. they say by doing so, not only can you reduce your upcoming tax bill, but also boost retirement savings down the road if you or a loved one, expect to have educational expenses, creating a 5 to 9 college savings plan before year's end is a good strategy as well. you also want to look at any tax credits that you're eligible for. >> also, there has been changes to the tax bracket. so you want to see how that might potentially affect your income or rather the taxes that you have to pay for next year. >> the irs is expected to start accepting returns. mid-january, you have until april 15th to file unless you have an extension. as new year's eve approaches, pet parents are preparing their animals for holiday related

at is 16,000 delays. so anyway, that's a real concern. sfo. i'm not seeing much problem so far. i'm seeing no delays there. so that's great news. mostly cloudy conditions, of course, and not much wind. but as you start to look nationwide, how about dallas? actually new york city jfk airport showing some delays there and some cancellations. and you look across the nation and it looks like we've got some around dallas fort worth. defini ely check ahead. if you're going to meet a plane or catch a plane, definitely want to make sure that things are on track, ok, our camera lens across the bay area. lots of them. lots of rain drops falling in some areas, especially the north bay and some light rain other areas as well. it's pretty gray. but the biggest storm of the weekend, which is not huge, but heavier rain is tomorrow morning sunday morning with strong winds but it moves out quickly and as a high surf advisory that continues into tomorrow morning. and that's for waves that are 15 to 18 to maybe 25 feet heizer quite strong

breaking waves and then new year's is a very different story. we're going to see more sunshine, clear skies, although be chilly in the overnight hours as high pressure, we'll start to build stephanie, back to you for news for now. all right, kathy, thank you so much. a new report says nationwide homeless numbers increased by more than 100,000 people within the last year. meantime, in santa clara county officials plan to clear more homeless encampments in the coming days potentially infecting hundreds of people. >> prof was jack moment reports. >> i know one week from friday. this notice posted along a several mile long stretch of coyote creek. this one-off story votes as sweeps will start in the new year. these people are criminals. these people are down on their luck. >> these people have lost houses, lost jobs, lost, loved ones shot. cartwright has been spending her holidays, telling the hundreds of people along coyote creek that they need to get moving. >> the silicon valley water board recently approved a ban on all camping along their

waterways, citing safety and hygiene concerts. the band starts on january second, but it's unclear how quickly law enforcement will force people out of their tents. if you're sweeping people out of the creeks where they supposed to go and if you don't have any answer, you should be sweeping people out of anywhere. shelter space is routinely fall in the south bay and the number of people living on the streets is increasing. according to the latest housing and urban development data. >> nearly three-quarters of a million people were found living on the streets across the u.s. california has by far the largest number of people living on the streets. a total of 160,000 more recorded this year. cartwright's not surprised. not at all. and i'm sure that's an under count. everyone anyone who's ever counted knows that's an undercount into the bike path. undercount into the bike path. she hands ou some belated christmas cheer. but you know what? i'm not going to tell you a flavor there. it's horrible man. >> it's horrible. mercy. watson has never been on house before, but he ended up here just 6 weeks ago. he was evicted after his roommate who

more people like murphy should be included in the conversation and not labeled a criminal. you must involve them in those decisions so they can agree to it. so it didn't. he? >> a fair contract in san jose jacmel but kron 4 news. >> in the north bay, the tamil pie union high school district settled multiple abuse cases for more than 17 million dollars. the lawsuit says tennis coach, normandy burgos sexually abused students in the early 2. thousands. he was convicted in 2019 on 60 counts of child molestation is now in prison. in a statement kron 4, the district said, quote, we hope this brings closure to all those involved. police in oakland are investigating a deadly shooting. they found the victim thursday afternoon on foothill boulevard near the franklin recreation center. the person was shot several times. no arrests have been made. if you have any information, please give oakland police a call. and cleanup continues in santa cruz after the war of collapsed when dangerous well

slammed into the structure as kron four's gayle ong reports. the hope is to reopen the wharf in a few weeks. >> incident on monday really the largest swell that we've seen 30 years. and as a result, santa cruz city leaders say about 150 feet at the end of the war was destroyed after dangerous swells slammed into the structure just before 01:00pm monday while the coast was under a high surf warning, according to the national weather service wave heights were about 30 to 40 feet with the highest breakers around 60 feet at the time. so that combined with end of the war being. under construction. >> and really damaged weakened from previous year storms. that was really vulnerable point. the impact causing 3 construction workers to fall into the water along with the dolphin restaurant and a restroom that part of the pier was already close since january of this year. right now, our immediate concern is the balance of the world open

and our businesses operating again as soon as possible. the santa cruz city manager at some 400 employees will be receiving funds to offset the amount lost during the closure. that may include help with rent in the meantime, crews are working to reopen. the wharf is too critical path items. the first removal of the heavy equipment. >> that fell into the ocean as a result of the incident were working with power. engineering. the contractor on the project as well as other salvage experts as to how best to do that. that's priority number one, that heavy equipment potentially jeopardizes this ability the rest of the as for the future of the borth, i don't think we can speak with any confidence at this point as to whether rebuilding. >> that section of the worst. is feasible. or the appropriate thing to in light of the increased frequency and power of the storm events that we're experiencing along our coastline warm-up ourselves on every coastal community in the world. how some version this

north bay and in some areas across the entire bay area at the water's edge, a high surf advisory in effect until wee hours of tomorrow morning for 15 to 18 to 25 foot waves. he's are strong breaking waves. so concerns, of course, about being on the beach concerns, of course, about being in the water because it's pretty strong breakers. a look at 2 dead. today's high temperatures upper 50's to mid 60's or so lots of clouds, some light rain and that's not a big storm. but just enough to be in a bit of a nuisance. now, this is a bigger storm coming in tomorrow morning with gusts year winds and stronger rain. so you'll see smackdown right across the san francisco bay area, bringing rain and then bringing snow to the sierra. so a little more fresh powder for the skiers, which is great news. but look what's happening on the forecast model as you see this little hump start to develop. that's a ridge that's an area of high pressure. and guess what? it parks itself over us and it will bring all the

storms to our north. they will no longer be bringing us rain for quite a few days. so the forecast for new year's eve looks dry. in fact, even though says storm comes in toward the pacific northwest, that ridge holds. that is your new year's eve tuesday evening, 11:30pm, or so. it's dry about new year's day. still dry. yes, there's a storm up to the north, but it doesn't get here. so that is great news as we get a chance to a transition from the really wet weather to much drier weather. in fact, the wet weather this weekend will be mainly in the pacific northwest and in the northwest part of our state by monday. you know, all the weekend rain, it's not that much. 8 tenths of an inch or santa rosa. half that much in san francisco about a quarter of an inch in mountain view. so it's just a little bit of rain on sunday. today's high temperatures mainly in the upper 50's to low 60's to mid 60's. if you head down toward southern part of the bay area. and a look ahead shows we've

weekend. >> how do you expect this to impact skiing conditions for people on this year? that's a great question, stephanie. it just to refresh, right? we're not looking at a lot of snow. 4 to 6 inches. i've forecast models up to 10 inches. >> but that we're looking more about that. 4 to 6 inch range are still road. pretty much low tide up here right now that a lot of precipitation. but a lot of those storms have just wrapped up north lassen, shasta area. but it's really good skiing and riding a covid winter shape right now. that's just the consistency of this now. but we're really having a good time. a nice little refresh before the new year's. it just as was just mentioned. we're going to see a little bit of a dry period. let the bowden operations teams get out around those mountains and start to look at what they could open up as we come out of the new year. all right. and what advice do you have for people heading to the mountains this weekend? are there any specific precautions preparations? people should be making. >> it's just the drive do it. so we we see it a challenge every year. >> on i-80, highway, 50 state route. 88, you've got be

prepared when you come up to the sierra, if you're a 2 wheel drive car chase chain tension or she checks the dav. those things with you do not try and go around the chain controls and think you could get over the summit without having change. then have your emergency road k your flashlight have water that car, some snackable items in the car as well. if you're in the eb full charge, charge it up before you come up to the summit are before you leave. lake take a gas as well. charge your cell phone. but i'll tell you what, come on up with a great attitude. get ready. it's going to be a little bit like level. but what you get up on the mound, you're going to have a great time. >> and testing now cook with winter conditions like these. you have any updates on resort operations. any possible closures at all. >> that your snow. not at all. we have plenty of snow right now to operate really what they have to do is get out of them out and take a look at it. a lot of the snow pack is really really moisture late. and so it's it's there to

stay. right now. we've had rain, snow, rain, snow flexed upwards downwards, rain up to 10,000 feet and then back down. it's a good start to a snowpack. it's not what we want. i'd love to see 96 inches right now 100 inches possibly. but right now we're city where between 36 probably 42 inches. china peak down in fresno, though, has a 50 inch base. so we just need to wait. watch and see that storm door. we do have high pressure that's going to lock in place for about 10 days. but look at those long rain by boj. models out there the year out at the gfs. it looks like that there's a hit of a break around the tent. and remember, winner late january february and then march calms. it is game on. so we got a long winter ahead. stop level site will see guys out on the mountain. fantastic. now. any special events that are planned for visitors a season that you can speak to. >> you know, you've always have the new year shows that are going to go on. so if you're at the kirkwood mountain resort, you're going to see the fireworks stacked.

doddridge has fireworks as well. so there's a lot of good activity or out just when you come up with a new year's. remember data stateline, nevada, it's very crowded. just be said, do not drink and drive and just get ready to do you know, the best part about new year's is >> its the next morning when you got on the mountain, there's nobody there. >> they're still asleep yeah. speaking from personal experience, i can do. absolutely. yeah who has a ski season so far stack up to previous years now? is that what's projected to fall this weekend expected to surpass last year. were you thinking? >> i mean, we're we're right there at that. you know where? but i'll call low tide is it's been a slow start to the season. but are down operations states that done a great job with what they have. >> these storms, this la nina pattern is really pushed everything to the north. shasta last tahoe just hasn't got those big storms, but we just have to wait. watch and see it. see what that high pressure does off west coast

see those storms start to move in. it will be good season averaged seasons about 3.96 395 inches were on want a good start. this is pretty normal, you know, depending on the lead the new year. but, you know, good once the storm door starts to open up and we see that first 12, 14, 16, 2 foot, 3 storms start to in. that will be on. if anything. we got to pay attention to the water tables up there because even though you've had a lot of moisture down in the bay area, a lot of precipitation, we don't have a snowpack to melt off quite yet at elevations. so that's that's the concern right now. i'm sure the guys over at the berkeley snow lab are looking at what they have on the jack right there and going. i wish we had another 40 inches right ok? got it. good contacts there. now, as we wrap things up here in our last 30 seconds, looking ahead to new year's eve in tahoe, you mentioned a lot of people like to celebrate just general advice, safety tips. >> you know, just had a great night. enjoy it out there. go

county. what we know about the suspected shooter. and the a's getting a new stadium and potentially a new face in the front office next season. that story still ahead. all 29 this morning. welcome back to the kron 4 weekend morning news. thank you so much for joining us. >> i'm stephanie lin. we continue our coverage with a look at the weather with kathy trapped in kathy, what should we know? >> well, i'll tell very interesting because we don't have any delays in san francisco, but my goodness, gracious across the nation, there are some delays. so it's quite significant. and you know what? san francisco a okay. but once we go looking at the national map, it is something else because are 17,000 delays reported so far today and over 700 cancellations. so easy. if you're heading out today to pick up somebody or to head out yourself, you might want to call ahead. delays reported in places such as new york city, jfk airport delays also in newark and also in dallas.

fort worth other than that so far looks okay. but that's not an easy travel day post-christmas. lots of rain drops on the camera. lens is across the bay area, especially in the north bay where the rain is going to be that most significant today. it will taper off only to be replaced by another storm tomorrow. heavier rain, stronger wind tomorrow. but you know what? that one goes by very quickly. high surf advisory. that's in effect until tomorrow. in the wee hours of the morning. and then a change, clear skies. cool morning. temperatures because high pressure will be in charge. a new sheriff in town as high pressure builds in. we will forget the storms for quite a few days, but here's a high surf advisory 15 to 18 to 25 foot large breaking waves hitting across our coastline until early tomorrow morning. future rainfall totals impressive in the northern part of the state. not as impressive today and into tomorrow. less than an inch everywhere. most i could find santa rosa at 8 tenths of an

inch. and only 2500's a quarter of an inch in stephanie, back to you. you can expect to see more chp officers in oakland, governor gavin newsom announcing the crime crackdown on friday. >> our capitol correspondent eytan wallace reports. >> statewide, california highway patrol organized retail crime task force in 2024 alone. it recovered over 13 million dollars in stolen goods, arrested more than 1400 suspects and conducted 777 investigations. he says his decision to add additional chp patrols and resources to areas he describes as regional hotspots, including bakersfield, bernardino, san francisco and oakland helped get those results. but specifically in the city of oakland, he says he will discontinue his decision to add additional chp patrols. if the city does not take quick action to change its policy that says an officer can engage in a police pursuit. only if the suspect is believed to have committed a violent crime or if there is a probable cause. the suspect is in possession of a gun.

otherwise no pursuit. newsom says that policy hampers officers ability to do their job. this extreme. >> pursuit policy. you can run a red light. you can come close to sideswiping a school bus during the morning hours right in front of a police officer and the pursuit policy in oakland says we can't. we cannot foresee that suspect. we cannot engage that suspect. we need to see that policy changed. oakland council members and attendants say they are working on changing the policy. it is my hope that in the new council that we can get this time in the next 30 days or >> looking ahead, statewide newsom believes it doesn't bipartisan retail theft, new laws he signed earlier this fall will make a difference, including one that will increase penalties for those who steal more than $50,000 in items. >> in another allowing prosecutors to combine the value of multiple stolen items to meet the larger penalty for

a felony. still, newsom defended his stance against prop 36. the 2024 ballot measure that voters overwhelmingly passed to increase truck treatment and increase penalties for some theft and drug offenses. newsom expressed concerns over lack of state money to fund prop 36 and he believes it could lead to mass incarceration. but republicans hope he helps implement prop 36. now that the past and now that it's law, he continues to look at prop 36 with skepticism. >> and for my colleagues in the legislature, i just a couple weeks ago. >> sent a letter to the governor requesting that he fully support and prop. 36 is important. >> and we should have a better idea about how newsom plans to fund prop 36 when he unveils his preliminary spending plan in january, reporting a ton wallace kron. 4 news. >> interim oakland mayor nikki fortunato bas thank governor newsom for extending the chp partnership into the new year.

according to bass open has seen crime fall. 34% this year. she says with chp is help opd can continue to respond to violent crime. well, chp focuses on traffic violations, car theft, sideshows and illegal gun seizures. the results are in from chp is holiday maximum enforcement period from christmas eve to christmas day officers arrested more than 300 drivers for dui. that's less compared to the more than 900 people arrested last year. chp officers also issued more than 3800 citations, including speeding tickets and seat belt violations. officers pulled over a suspected dui driver during a traveling the wrong way on i-580. it happened on christmas eve. the driver was just hours away from his 21st birthday. it is unclear if he faces charges. the chp reminds people to celebrate responsibly and to use rideshare services. officers arrested a carjacking suspect from san francisco. he's accused of shooting a sheriff's deputies in sacramento county. but as

tiffany and has the latest. >> this news of all of this is that nobody was hurt, especially the sacramento county sheriff's office says just before 11, a deputy was patrolling the area of sunrise and kaluma when the deputy spotted a vehicle matching the description of a vehicle involved in a carjacking in san francisco, the deputy waited for other deputies to assist. >> as soon as they lit up their emergency lights, that vehicle started to speed away. the driver actually reached out from the window and fired several shots back toward the deputies. the sheriff's office tells us at least 2 shots were fired from a grace id and a handgun was used. >> the deputies did not fire back and continue to pursue the vehicle for under a minute. >> the driver then pulled over and surrendered. >> this is the ending. we always hope for. is that peaceful surrender no matter what happened. we want that person safely in custody without any more incidents. the sheriff's office says that 34 year-old suspect was put behind bars and is a convicted felon. >> he was booked on multiple charges, including attempted

murder. he is a convicted felon. >> and no business owning a farm in the first place. much less stealing a car carjacking people last night. deputies were canvassing the area. >> they were out there last night for several hours. a lot of road closures in that area, obviously just to cover their tracks to see if those bullets struck anything could not find any vehicles hit could not find the property. that was it. obviously that's part no people were hit. >> lows are put estefania reporting for u.s.. meantime, bird flu continues to cause problems across the country. not only are we dealing with an egg shortage. the illness has spread to house cat reporter nancy loo has more. >> health officials are urgently warning all pet owners about raw foods and exposure to wildlife in the newest case, oregon health officials say a house cat contracted h 5 n one by eating northwest naturals raw and frozen pet food, which is sold nationwide. the portland based company has voluntarily recalled the frozen turkey line linked to the death

>> yeah, little gloomy. and that slowly disappearing tower as we get more and more gray started to take control. look at the view from mount tam a pious. you see the gray and you see the winds blowing the trees ever so gently. so it's really a beautiful morning, especially if you like the light rank is. that's what we've got specially in the north bay. so the rain is really the most wrong there. but we're seeing some droplets pretty much everywhere at times. and if you're driving, that translates into very slick roads tomorrow morning. we'll see the heavier rain and tomorrow morning we'll see the gustier winds, but it goes by very quickly and a high surf advisory, which is in effect now will expire tomorrow morning in the wee hours. and then we get mostly clear skies. so here's your sunday. we get precipitation in the morning around sunrise. quickly, it goes away. here you are on monday night and here you are on new year's eve and then we're into the new year's day and it's going to be a high pressure in control. that means clear skies for us.

beautiful conditions but chilly. the overnight hours. so how much rain is left for bay area by tomorrow afternoon. when we're done with it all, 8 tenths of an inch in santa rosa. half that much in san francisco and maybe a quarter of an inch or so down in the south bay, not a big deal in terms temperatures. many areas are in the upper 50's to low 60's. whether you are in san francisco at 59 degrees pretty much everywhere. and then you go down to the shoreline just about the same. maybe 60 in pacifica, some 60's right along the water's edge from millbrae burlingame woodside, 60 degrees. a little warmer as we start to head south. how about to 63 and santa's a 66 degrees east bay mid 60's in some areas, but not everywhere. some areas still top out in the 50's today. so it's going to be a beautiful day, but not terribly hot just as warm and it's stinson beach as it is in petaluma. so it's just that kind of day this time of year. look at 7 your

i'm doing a fondue board in cash and these are so much fun at parties because you can pick so many different things. >> to depend, she's who doesn't yet. he's i'm i'm a big fan cheesy. so please, extra cheese, please, right. so what i did was i decided to do a lot of fruits and vegetables breads, things like that. anything that tastes good that you can dep and the cheese. so i have some apples right now that are in season. great force pairs. i've got some meat and i've got some cauliflower, different colors right now. i it's so beautiful. some bread sticks and i loved the traditional just some really good bread. i just cut up some bread slices and i'm going just put them here the board. and if you've noticed, i have a bunch of the skewers that now these are going to be for each person to have their own. i have them color that's more different colors. so track, right? just like when you have your little tag on your glass, a wine. don't forget whose wine it is.

same thing here so everybody can have their own. they can dip into the cheese, put it on their plate and just kind of knebel throughout that. you've got a lot of experience planning. i can and i i do love that there are some healthy options on the table to his foot. and now in terms of the cheese, is there a specific kind that you like to go for a record? yes. when i make my fondue cheese, i love to use gree air and swiss. okay. and i also like to use a little bit of white wine and a dry white wine and of course, you never want to cook with the wind. you won't drink itself. so i have a chardonnay that i made with this. okay. and i just like i out, who did so the cheese gets my son soft. of course the chardonnay adds a lovely flavor to it. and of course you can have a glass to go with this beautiful board. okay. great idea. right there. in terms of also the types of cheese that you just mentioned, is it also melt easier? is that why chose to go with those? yes, great

flavor. and swiss melts perfectly and it doesn't get that pretty flavor. so you can leave it with the beautiful pot on and you'll be fine. you'll be safe for the evening. great, fantastic. and you have other delicious fun ideas so. have you heard of clams casino? i have this something you came up kind of throwback to i think the 60's or 70's that was a popular deadline. i'm kind changing it up and i'm using and but it's kind of the same idea. so what i did was i just steam to some muscles that i got at the store account. and right now there, i mean, they're not overly expensive to buy. so they're great. so i steam them first with a little bit of water. and then once they're done, i have some here that i already steamed. i just pull apart the you know, the one-sided. and then i did get like this just to kind of release it from the muscle.

see i there's an attachment release that so that it's easier for people to eat. now of course, tough this. so i'm hoping you can at the that's what i'm here so i have some panko breadcrumbs to that. we're going to add a little bit of garlic because everything taste better with garlic. you could put the garlic put it right there. bowl. yes, purrfect gray. and then we're to that. we're also going to add some parmesan cheese john cheese and extra. she just a little over lu wei. >> and then we need a little bit of slavering. so in seasoning bowl here, i have some red pepper flakes. if you like the spice. yes, absolutely. it. so oregano and some red pepper flakes, and pepper and we're going to put a little bit of the yes, that's rosemary. put that right and to punt. kind of bind it. keep it all together. i'm adding some extra virgin olive ok? and you can do better. but i just like the

flavor that this brings with the olive oil. it's a little fruity here. you can. and i really like that. so we just to that and beautiful >> muscle that i already opened up. i'm just going to put the beautiful stuffing on top and you're going to want to kind of press it a little and i did a whole tray of these. and honestly, there are already baked. so, yeah, just put them in the oven for about 7 minutes and you get that little crispy top to and it's a delicious and use are just finger food. again, something quick and easy that you can take and have a little bit and honestly, it goes really well what doing with that. she and i like that. you knew to separate the muscle that detaches that people it's easier for people to, you know, don't have right last thing you want to do is started to try to pull it out of the shell. that's no fun for anyone, right? so if you can think of your gas, that's something you definitely want to do. okay. and this beautiful. what's what's what's happening over here? oh, my gosh. what? you have to have a little discern. yes,

we're going to make it slightly healthy, but definitely seasonal cast. so i have a pair and cranberry tart okay. so parents are in season. >> they're delicious. of course. we added a little bit of butter and some sugar, but still very delicious. and some cranberries. so what i did was instead of worrying about making a big crest, what i did was i puff pastry. okay. so that's so easy to find in your store. so i rolled out puff pastry 10 by 10. and i just put these beautiful sliced pears and you can use any pair, whatever one you like. different types in the grocery store. honestly, any of them will work. okay. so i just slice some pairs on here and i took these beautiful cranberries. we still have campers in season great. we're going to get them in the store. and i went ahead did it just like that? just sliced it on and you can make a beautiful decoration if you or you can just line it up. and

then i put on top of it. >> these beautiful cranberries baked for about 20 minutes. puffed up so nicely and just for a little bit of crunch, i put some of the roasted almonds on it. and there you go. that is a beautiful one for new year. but i feel like we need to have, course, our toast. yes, something to go with that because it won't be new so even though we have that beautiful chardonnay to go with our fondue board. >> ice say we still need to bring in the new year with some sparkling. so depending on what kind you like you can do, brut or rose either one. so i have one of each so you can offer your guests their choice if they want something pink, if they want something brute, they can have either one so that you are the hostess with the most bringing in the new year. fantastic. and he tell us a bit about why you chose to go with the specific brand well, i just love the flavor and i also love supporting local. these
