a global humanitarian. jimmy carter has died tonight. we look back at his politics, how he redefined his life. >> for human rights after the white house. hello, everyone. thank you for joining us. i'm catherine heenan. jimmy carter turned 100 in october. the former president had been receiving hospice care at his home in plains, georgia, since february of 2023. along with being the longest living american president ever. he was also a nobel peace prize winner. he was a champion of democracy, public health, human rights. marni hughes has a look back at his life. >> jimmy carter, the peanut farmer who became president that it will be on the world. we always looking forward to getting back hall born in 1924. in plains, georgia raised in a small farming community. he joined the navy and married the love of his life in 1946. will eventually i would. it was motion.

it. >> 1000 of friends had an exciting and adventurous ratify. just us. >> jimmy and rosalynn carter became almost synonymous with the charity habitat for humanity. among the many, many places they work to help build homes. oakland and 2013. this was the scene. they were also celebrating the 30th anniversary of the carter work project today. the habitat for humanity, east bay, silicon valley operation released a statement calling carter a champion for affordable and decent housing. governor newsom. among the many politicians reacting to the news he posted condolences saying in part, jennifer and i joined the country and the world in mourning the passing of president jimmy carter, a tireless champion for human rights and democracy. american political leaders offering condolences after carter staff, including president biden and president elect

>> there's bipartisan support at this point celebrating president carter and his life because particularly his post presidency, i think will be remembered as a high watermark in american history for what presidents can do once they leave office. and once they have that option, president carter's impact after leaving the white house was in measurable. >> he founded the carter presidential center in atlanta to battle poverty and homelessness around the globe. he advocated for denuclearization. he helped habitat for humanity, build homes for americans in need often showing up at construction sites to work alongside other volunteers. former president barack obama riding president carter taught all of us what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice and service. michelle and i send our thoughts and prayers to the carter family and everyone who loved and learned from this remarkable man in 2002 carter was awarded the nobel peace prize for his

work, advancing peace and humanitarian rights around the world. we can choose. to alleviate suffering. we can choose. to work together for peace. we can make these changes. and we must former president george w bush also issuing a statement saying in part, james earl carter junior was a man of deeply held convictions. he was loyal to his family, his community and his country. president carter dignified the office. carter also worked to broker peace in the middle east. in 1978, bringing together the prime minister of israel and the president of egypt at camp david. a historic moment on the world stage a moment. carter's grandson says was one of his grandfather's most notable achievements. i think that he would say that his greatest accomplishment during the presidency was the camp david accords. >> that peace in the middle east with such a fundamental part of his life's journey that he believed in it. he

rosa. so that's where the areas where you'll feel that cold air. so usually when that front leaves us, it leaves behind those chilly temperatures. so pretty quiet on stormtracker here. you may into some lingering showers at the day. but other than that, we're just seeing some patchy fog over by the valleys, the mostly clear skies overnight into the morning. just watch out for that valley fog towards the east bay. and mostly clear for the afternoon. so here's your wake-up planner. 06:00am with some partly cloudy skies will start to see the sun come out right after 07:00am. and take a look at the inland temperatures will be starting off the morning in the upper 30's. so bundle will be warming up to eventually to the 40's and 50's for daytime highs. we'll be talking about the cold air coming our way in the extended forecast. dark purple. is that freeze warning that goes into effect monday night into tuesday. so are in the north bay for you. and then around the some parts in the north bay and our inland communities in the east bay and south bay will be under a

for a group of people connected to 2 morning robberies at the most recent just after 06:00am on heggen berger road. police say several people went into a shell store and robbed an employee then took off before the police arrived about 04:30am, in the morning a group of people broke into an arco station on shattuck avenue. not clear yet whether it was this same group. antioch police arrested a man last night who is accused of shooting at his girlfriend. that incident led to a shelter-in-place warning for a time happened on know park circle near country hills drive. officers say a man had shot at his girlfriend also at a nearby home. they say he then barricaded himself in a house. there was a 6 hour standoff. the man eventually was arrested. there were no injuries reported. all right. let's look at the forecast again. this is the view from our mount tam camera and kron 4 meteorologist scale on this here talking in part about

cold weather, chilly temperatures on the way. >> we saw that rain waves of rain. it was a very unsettled pattern had, wasn't it? so now that is setting the stage for the cold temperatures as this cold front is leaving us. and it's leaving behind frosty temperatures ahead. so a live look over from our san francisco camera. pretty clear out there as well. just like in that mount tam camera. so pretty quiet on our storm tracker. closer look, we don't see a lot of rain activity that has tapered off and it is really moving out of here. current winds, winds were a problem to overnight and early this morning. now winds are calm just coming of the wind advisory. it's now it's all about the chilly temperatures on the way. so this time yesterday was about where about 10 degrees down than we were yesterday and the 6 degrees down in other places. so >> you can really see it around the inland communities. our current temperatures are in the 50's and we're starting to see 40's and our inland valleys like santa rosa in livermore that going to be where we're going to see those

consumer spending exceeding expectations. inflation slowing wheat is up 4.6% in 12 months and a series of strong jobs report. the job market is cooking along. >> at a great rate, that's the 20th month in a row that the unemployment rate has been below 4%. >> americans citing different data. >> my grocery bill a week is over $700. 5 people. it's crazy. i mean, everything so plate 50% and they can't afford even take your family out. the now more. got a pretty good job. the economy is is really bad right now that a $14 an hour. >> currently, i'm working 7 days in a row and it's barely enough to make ends meet the economy's horrible. they tell us every day it's good. i shop. it's not good. the disconnect noteworthy, even to the experts i've never seen. the economy were 2 people are in can be in a room screaming one screaming, the economy's bad one screening. the economy is great and they're both right. it really is tale of 2

economies, right? it is 2 different economic reality is that people are experiencing. you happen to be invested in the stock market. >> that might be doing really well. but if you are a renter and you see the increased cost of renting, for example, then you're really feeling that stress partly to blame america's new gig, economy people are doing some get jobs. so they're working, but they're not working at the best quality jobs. >> the ones that are family sustaining a growing number like matthew kalish, relying on side hustles to get by. he works overnight at a new jersey hotel. then clocks in for his day job as a u.s. postal worker. i mean, we're sometimes at the end of the week where, you know, the big bills are paid, but we're waiting till friday to go, grocery shopping things like that because there's only so much money to go around even with both jobs because even slowing inflation means prices are still going up. so it doesn't mean prices are going to drop necessarily. it just means that they might stabilize or grow more slowly.

if your prices actual start to go down, that actually called a deflationary economy. and that's not a good thing from an economic perspective in september. with inflation hitting a three-year low. >> the fed made its first cut to interest rates. the u.s. economy is in a good place and and our decision today is designed to keep it there. expectations were high, but the average 30 year mortgage rate only dipped briefly to 6.2% before stubbornly sticking up for americans under a staggering record. 1.7 trillion dollars in credit card debt. it barely made a difference credit card. debt is high and rising and the average interest rate on a credit card in the u.s. is somewhere between 2025%. some as high as 36%. but americans don't seem to be tightening their belts when it comes to holiday shopping or on indulgences. like meal deliveries, expected to top 95 billion dollars this year. i'm definitely scratching my head of the people's willingness to pay for the convenience of meal delivery

colleagues say his courage and his commitment still inspire them. haywood place looking for a missing man who has dementia. his name is gregory man. while he was last seen near hey street and the old san leandro neighborhood wearing a burgundy coat beige pants. anyone with information is asked to call police. investigators still trying to piece together what caused the plane crash in south korea which killed 179 people yesterday, the boeing 7.37 skidded off the runway. it slammed into a concrete fence before bursting into flames. 2 crew members were rescued were not sure of their conditions. 181 people have been on board. authorities say the plane's landing gear malfunction, but they're also looking at whether a bird strike might have played a part in that crash. as for the christmas day crash of a passenger plane over kazakhstan. the president

of azerbaijan says the plane was damaged from outside on russian territory. he's stopping short of saying it was intentional but says the plane was shot down by russia. he is accusing russia of trying to hush up the problem for several days. 38 people died during the incident. 29 survived. azerbaijan's president is calling on russia to apologize to admit it's guilt. news nation reporter alicia needs has more on that story. >> we've been following the story closely. and today we got stern words and strong accusations from the president azerbaijan. he spoke on state media this morning flat out saying that russia is responsible for the deadly plane crash. he was quoted as saying our plane was shot down by accident. going on to add that unfortunately in the first 3 days we heard only of certain versions from russia. he signed a kremlin statement said attempt to attribute to crash to birds or the

explosion of some sort of gas cylinder inconsistent with survivor accounts of what they experienced during the crash and inconsistent with the wreckage on the ground. in video of the wreckage. you can clearly see at least a dozen small holes, very reminiscent of bullet holes throughout the plane. debris azerbaijan's president went on to call russia's early explanation of the crash. clear attempts to cover up the matter. these comments today, though, come as the country itself is paying tribute to the lives lost on wednesday. and as the country also honors the pilot azerbaijan's plane crash for the way they actually landed the plane allowing 29 people to survive but lead to their own deaths again in total. 38 people died. the president azerbaijan wants russia, though, to accept guilt of downing the plane and to then punish those responsible for fatally damaging the aircraft. russia, of course, has yet to do so. but the kremlin is now saying that it has opened a

reporting in center say volunteers who worked all year to help feed the homeless have reached a big milestone. the farmers market project is past its goal of donating 40,000 pounds of food in 2024. volunteers with saint francis of assisi church routinely collect unsold food from the evergreen village square. farmers market. they showed up, but they do show up every sunday, rain or shine. the food goes to the family, supportive housing project on north king wrote. >> they support about 80 adults 4 children and that center. and they do not buy any canned goods serviceable because we're able to supply them year-round with donations that we get this is one of the better year than we have. >> and it has with generosity of the vendors giving us those pro days and the number of volunteers to come out every sunday to help. >> and this has been happening

their routes. what happens exactly when a plane goes through a choppy area? well, what's going on there? >> yeah, i like to describe it is that our airplanes are like a boat on a river and the river in this case is the jet stream. that's a river of air. as you imagine a fast-flowing river is not always smooth. so if you're in an airplane flying along on that river, any of those little swirls are at ease or what your airplane feels as flying along in that stream of there. there's always turbulence, right? it's almost impossible to avoid turbulence. 100 1% of what we try to do here is mitigate the highest risk of turbulence. it's not just a bumpy ride that concerns the team. believe it or one of the highest prior concerns and it on top of our radar is volcanic ash. >> emissions. we watch those around the globe. the atmosp eric phenomena in this case, volcanic ash clouds reduced visibility damage, flight controls and can cause engines to fail. >> but closer to home, mixed
