the government for >> that was kimberly chang reporting for us. meanwhile, another plane crash here is being investigated. this one in canada's connected to a landing gear issue. air canada express landed saturday night in halifax, nova scotia. but the plane slid down the runway causing flames to the left side of the plane. that would be scary. the plane was unable to reach the terminal and passengers were offloaded using a bus. the cause of this issue is not clear. no one was injured. >> deadly storms and tornadoes across the southern united states over this past weekend killed at least 3 people damage from the storms that stretches across multiple states. more than 20 million people from the eastern gulf coast of the carolinas are still facing some weather-related risks tonight, the busy holiday travel weekend just ahead of new year's eve was slowed by threats of rain, snow and more tornadoes across the country.

flight tracking website flightaware shows nearly 800 flights within into or out of the united states were canceled on sunday, more than 20,000 flights were delayed. >> my sister just got delayed 17 or so. so is, you know, both sides of it. we had the easy route. she had the tough road. >> i'm meteorologists are watching a brewing storm that could spell trouble for much of the northeast heading into new year's eve. one of those areas expected to get soaked is times square crown. first chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. he's tracking all the weather across the nation wants to mess out there. yeah. unusually strong tornadoes breaking out this time of year across deep south all the way from texas mississippi, georgia as these storms kind of rolled on through behind that. >> we're getting another burst of moisture just coming across the colorado rockies. that's going to develop into the next storm system of the one that pushed through the deep south. that was a very intense system that moved on through. and you see the line of storms and

behind that just dozens of tornadoes dropping down on the backside of that as well. and so all the damage done by that, thousands of people also without power and they'll be cleaning up from that one for quite a while. in the meantime, not done just yet that next storm system that we were just talking about rolling right across the rockies. and there you go. as we head toward midnight tomorrow night, boy, they're going to be ringing in the new year on the wet side, possibly new york, some heavy rainfall moving through. there may be some possibility of some thunderstorms, maybe a little lake effect. snow on the backside of that as well. now travel, of course, around the country. now can have some issues with these thunderstorms of pilots often get the diverted from some of that activity. but right now things are looking good at sfo. no thunderstorms there across the country. not bad. so far. things no delays being reported around a good part of the united states right now. but get cold in spots out very lucky right here out west as the rain track has moved to the north. the jet stream is lifted. that is going to send most that rain north of the bay area. i think the pacific

northwest, they could be ringing in the new year on the wet side. but dry weather expected across the bay area that should hold true in our area tomorrow. temperatures look at the last day of 2024. mainly in the 50's some low 60's in san jose. >> thanks, lawrence. president-elect trump is siding with elon musk on this issue. musk is in favor of h one b temporary worker visas. but some say those these is they're taking jobs away from americans. tom dempsey has the latest. today marks 3 weeks to go until the presidential inauguration. but we are seeing this fight grow between some of the hardline anti-immigration republicans versus some of the president elect donald trump supporters in the and business fields. this all revolves around what's known as the h one b visa program which provides a temporary work visa and not immigration status to highly skilled workers from other countries. we see this used by companies and tech financing and supporters of the program

say it helps united states keep an edge in those fields. but >> opponents believe it can actually undercut wages for americans. controversy grew in recent days with president elect trump didn't interview with the new york post in which you said, quote, i have many h one b visas on by properties. i've been believer in h one i've used it many times. it's a great program. a billionaire elon musk also voiced support for the program and said he'd go to war over the issue posting to axe the reason i'm in america along with so many critical people who built spacex, tesla in hundreds of other companies that made america strong is because of h one b. but like i said, we've seen opposition voice too. former presidential candidate nikki haley posted the acts. if the tech industry needs workers invest in our education system invested or american workforce, we must invest in americans first before looking elsewhere to dive a little bit deeper into this, though, the work visas last 3 years but can be extended and the recipients of the program must have a

bachelor's degree or higher in a field relevant to their specialty. u.s. immigration services cap the number of new h one b visas at 85,000 per fiscal year. according to data from the department of homeland security as well in fiscal year 2023, 72% of h one b petitions approved involve people born in india while 12% were born in china. in total, 71%. the approved petitions were men. now in response to some of the criticism elon musk has proposed some reforms to the h one b visa program, including increasing the minimum salary requirement which could potentially fight back against low-cost labor abuse at the white house. tom dempsey, news station. >> it's called the healthy home are cast and it's one of many set to go into effect in the new year capitol correspondent eytan wallace the assembly member who authored it about why it could eventually lead to less homework. a california public

>> as students and teachers prepared to return to school in january 2025. after the holiday break. a new law set to go into effect in the new year could eventually lead to less homework. yeah, that will get people's attention. kron four's capitol correspondent eytan wallace reports. >> well, many californians can probably look back at their upbringings and remember spending hours after school at their desk. doing homework. but now one lawmaker says she hopes to change that for the next generation. when the bell rings and the school day is over for students like 6 grader sophia johnson.

>> the day is nowhere near over. she blames that on hours spent doing homework, whom much is exhausting. it's overwhelming. >> and it's depressing that my whole day from when i wake up until when i go to bed is nearly all taken up with schoolwork. and that's why sophia's mother assembly member polar szabo says she authored ab 2, 9, 9, 9, also known as the healthy home work the time by governor gavin newsome. earlier this year, the legislation is set to become law in the new year. >> it will not ban homework, but it will formally encourage local school boards and educational agencies to establish homework policies that consider impacts to students, physical and mental health all while including input from parents, teachers and students themselves addressing homework, which is the top stressor for kids. it's often number one. it's definitely top 3. >> and their overall lives. this could have an overnight impact in their lives. it comes as a survey of more than 300,000 american students conducted by stanford university and the nonprofit organization challenge

success. >> found 45% of workload and homework is their number one source of stress. 13,000, california high school students who took the survey report an average of 2 and a half hours of homework every night. they just toward a school in my district where, you know, they talked about how >> they're trying to reduce the kids who are missing school are dropping out of school and the top reason they're hearing is because kids are getting behind. they just get into a whole when you when you miss homework and then you have homework the next day. you're trying to catch up from the old home art, too much homework really can overwhelm their brain start to shut off. they stay up too late there, not present and available to really learn in school the next day. and so making sure that we find that balance. she knows her legislation is also tailored around equity. something california teacher of the year case, security believes. >> it's crucial noting students from lower socoeconomic backgrounds may not have access to resources at home like high-speed internet at the child's grade

meteorologist lawrence karnow. he's been tracking all that snow. >> warrants, they've really got a good dumping. yeah, you know, real. the weather is working on. nice to now. folks can get up there to go enjoy all that snow up there. of course it was rough. we have these storms is coming right one after the other made it hard to plan your trip to get the high country. but if you want to get up there and do it, we're looking pretty good right now. the skies departed up there and you're looking good. lot of snow across the crest of the sierra nevada, all in all the way down lake levels. we've seen plenty of snow in the high country cold. yeah, you bet. that will keep that snow in place. 31 degrees right now in south lake tahoe to freezing 30 and incline. 32 right at the freezing mark in truckee and 28 degrees in homewood. but yeah, it looks like it's going to be nice there. if you want to travel a partly cloudy skies. temperatures hovering in the 40's by day as we head through the new year in the beginning warm up a little bit on thursday. but think the worst part you may have to worry about some to leave fog coming across the central valley. otherwise things are looking good right now. you can see some high clouds drifting over the bay as we get ready for the end of the year and get

ready for 2025, as you can believe that high pressure. yeah, that ridge will start to break down a little bit, but it's going to hold strong enough to bring the rain up in the pacific northwest. we're going to be on the dry side now. keep as we head into this new year, least dry for now. but as we head toward the first weekend, things may get a little bit wet traveling% around the state. tomorrow you'll find a mixture of 50's and 60's. it'll be cool across much of northern and central california. little warmer in the 60's in los angeles. lori forecast, though. yeah, we've got this one from system gets a little bit closer. that's gonna bring the rain up 7 northwest, maybe clipping far northern california right around the beginning of the new year. just a few passing clouds and mostly dry into san francisco in the bay area. but then weaker system slides through as we head in toward right about friday. that could be our last chance of rain. maybe not only this next week, but maybe for a couple weeks. we've got a pretty significant a change in the weather pattern as high pressure begins to build in. and it looks like some drier than normal conditions, maybe through the 1st half of the month, maybe even a little warmer than normal meantime temperatures.lyeah, we've got a lot of 50's out there could
