attacks. police originally said that the kidnapping of denise huskins was a hoax before they admitted it actually happen. matthew mueller's currently serving 40 years to life in federal prison for that crime. and now he's being charged with 2 other attacks that occurred before the attack on haskins. well dan kerman has that story. >> we don't forget about about rape, about murder, about any crime. >> that's committed in this county. santa clara county's district attorney says that's why he's brought charges against convicted kidnapper matthew mueller for a home invasion attacks that occurred in mountain view and palo alto back in 2009. >> in both of these cases, the defendant broke into a woman's home, tied them up. found them made them drink things to make them intoxicated and did this for the purpose of rape in the 47 year-old mueller is now charged with 2 counts of first-degree burglary. >> with the intent to commit rape and faces 2 life sentences. if convicted the da

says mueller was linked to the attacks due to advances in dna technology. >> the strap from the palo alto case. it's a velcro strap. we analyzed in 2010, but dna technology has gotten significantly better since 2010. and so recently we've been able to find the defendants dna on that strap, which is not something that we were able to find. in 2010. >> mueller is currently serving 40 years in federal prison after being convicted of kidnapping and sexually assaulting denise huskins. back in 2015 at first vallejo, police called her story a hoax only to change their tune and arrest mueller risen, acknowledge the investigations into the palo alto and mountain view cases were also not handled properly. >> there were. >> mistakes made in this investigation and what we're proud to say now is that we're able to bring this perpetrator to justice and that this

through wednesday thursday, january 9th is the national funeral service. in the east bay city. leaders in oakland are marking a successful strategy. all meant to lower violent crime. opd says the city has seen a 5 year low in homicides and shootings and interim mayor niki fortunado bas says it's thanks to the cease-fire strategy. that's a multi agency program between the department of violence prevention, the police department district attorneys and faith-based leaders who all work towards increasing safety on the streets. >> oakland cease-fire was never a government idea, but a community call to action. these community leaders have maintained their belief in the power of the strategy to save lives and have worked with us every day throughout this year successfully rerouted in oakland. >> the ceasefire program works identifying people who are at high risk, a violent crime in offering them intensive community-based services trying to help break the

cycles of violence. >> we're talking about the people in this city who are driving violence currently and who within the next 90 days may either pick up a gun and shoot someone or become a victim of gun violence themselves. and that case management approach involves identifying individual clients, drivers of violence and then working very diligently to address those so that we can interrupt the cycles of violence and that could include anything from temporarily relocating people out of oakland to make sure that they're not caught in the cycle of gang violence. it could be re unrolling folks in school. it could be reaching out to get employment training, housing, substance use and abuse trauma therapy. >> it really ranges. >> well, the cease-fire strategy was created in 2012. it was deprioritized because of covid. the poll was brought back nearly year ago by former mayor sheng thao since in oakland's reporting homicides are down more than 30%. bay area is getting ready to ring

kind the moderate level, even though it seems that everybody has a cold, but in a move to the country actually is at a high level. so what happens out bhe thanksgiving followed you know, christmas hanukkah followed by new year's is that the risk and the rest of the country get average of the bay area. so we catch up. so what are you seeing is out process of catching up. >> the flu, is it covid? is it just the common cold? is it everything? >> that's a great blessing. right? so often people who have these flu-like symptoms by fall will have right now in the area, a cold about 3 of them will have rsv which can be more dangerous than kids but adults. it feels like a cool and about 3 of the other 10 will have either covid or influenza influences. what people are worried about particularly this year. it's causing a lot of hospitalizations in europe and the east coast is starting to come here and that will probably lead people. they got sicker.

square. according to police, the suspect was believed to be a security guard for the upscale clothing store. police say he had a gun and was shot. fact, it's nationwide. homelessness is up significantly this year. news nation mills hayes breaks down the numbers. >> according to the latest data from the department of housing and urban development overall, homelessness rose 18% in 2024. with families with children experiencing homelessness at more than double that rate. hud's annual homeless assessment report to congress found record levels of homelessness across nearly every demographic. but it was people with families that saw the worst of it. nearly 150,000 children experienced homelessness on a single 9 2024, a 33% rise from the year

before and children under the age of 18 with the age group that saw the largest increase in homelessness overall, older americans also saw a dramatic rise in homelessness with more than 140,000 people over the age of 55 going on house in the u.s. this year. nearly half of whom reported living in places not meant for humans. and once again, black americans were over represented among the homeless population, making up about 32% of the homeless population. despite accounting for just 12% of the population. and in fact, nearly every demographic in the u.s. recorded record levels of homelessness in 2024. with only veterans seeing a drop in homelessness this year. but it wasn't all bad news. like i mentioned found veteran homelessness dropped in 2024. down 8% from 2023 in down 55% since the department began collecting data on veteran homelessness in 2009. and while homelessness is going up, so are the numbers of beds available for them in shelters
