>> it stressed it's the corner in comes barreling through people throwing people like like a movie scene like real-life throwing people into the air. they falling under the car on >> now at 6, the new year celebration orleans turns deadly after a truck plows, 3 visitors killing 15 people and during many others, officials are now investigating the incident as a terrorist attack. thanks for joining us. i'm stephanie rothman. the attack happened as people were ringing in the new year on the popular tourist attraction, bourbon street. authorities have identified the driver now has 42 year-old u.s. citizen and army veteran from texas. they say hours before the attack he posted all social media saying he was inspired by the islamic state group and express a desire to kill. officials also say they do not believe that the suspect acted alone. our washington correspondent jessi tenure has more details. >> i agree with you. our

nation grieves with president joe biden is mourning the people killed in the dozens injured in what officials are investigating as a terrorist attack in new orleans. despicable attack that occurred in the early morning hours. senator john kennedy and congressman troy carter stood with their fellow louisianans as the fbi announced more details new year's day. the agency says a driver rammed a pickup truck into a crowd on bourbon street before being shot to death by police. but that's not trigger. the gag reflex of every american, every fair-minded american be very surprised. the fbi says it does not believe the driver acted alone and officials found an islamic state group flag in his truck. we expect. >> to put the full force and resources of the federal government behind this investigation. carter says president biden promised him that to bring these cowards. to justice. the attack also

postponed a college football playoff game at the nearby superdome until thursday. it was done with one single thing in mind. public safety. carter encouraged the fans in town to stay vigilant in washington. i'm jessi tenure. >> and a response to the attack. governor newsom says the state threat assessment center is now on heightened alert closely coordinating and sharing information with partner law enforcement agencies. >> kron four's gayle ong joins us now in the studio with more. yeah, yes, stephanie. we checked in with the local law enforcement in our major bay area cities, san francisco, oakland and san jose police. >> who are all monitoring the tragic situation in new orleans and all say while there is no credible threats in their cities, the public is advised to stay vigilant. >> new year's celebrations turned into terror in new orleans as a truck plowed into people on the famed bourbon street killing at least 15 people, injuring at least 30 of the city of new orleans was

impacted by a terrorist attack. the fbi is investigating the attack as an act of terrorism. investigators recovered and islamic state group flag and said the truck driver with a u.s. citizen from texas. he was killed in a shootout with police. 3 of our officers. >> engage the scare roast. who shot at them? 3 of the officers returned fire. those officers did not run in fear. new orleans police chief anne kirkpatrick, who also used to be oakland's police chief, says the officers are recovering. the fbi believes the driver did not act alone. meantime, back in the bay area. >> it's scary. >> the news of the attack is on people's minds like cody larkin in many boston. it's really scary. and it's at 7. we. >> within a place where this is something that we have to think about. honestly, one of the first that's a had was when i was how many people are out celebrating now, it just makes me more anxious about crowds just now going through any type of really crowded space and thinking of days is going to be targeted because

there's a lot of people here. it's not it's not going to governor gavin newsom's office released a statement in response to the new orleans attack reads in part, quote, the state threat assessment center is on heightened alert closely, coordinating and sharing information with partner law enforcement agencies. >> and governor gavin newsom adds while there are no credible threats directed at california events, cal oes urges all californians to remain vigilant while attending public events. meantime, our local law enforcement agencies echoing the government's the governor's remarks and asking the public to always report any suspicious activity in the studio. gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> the fbi is also investigating a cyber truck that exploded outside of trump tower in las vegas, killing one person and injuring several others. president biden says officials are now looking into the possibility that the explosion and the attack in new orleans are connected. right as men city has the latest.

>> a henderson resident blake's but haro says he saw it all happen. there's a cyber truck sitting in the ballet. >> area. i like touch the revolving door. i was about to go out to get our car and a lot of fireworks started going off just like dozens of fireworks nonstop. >> fireworks seen in this surveillance video of the explosion. although tesla ceo elon musk has said publicly that fireworks or a bomb in the bed of the rental truck caused the explosion. this is a joint investigation among metro police, the clark county fire department and the fbi police say they have a number of leads with the overnight attack in new orleans. they're taking the investigation seriously, as you can imagine, with an explosion here. >> iconic las vegas boulevard. we are taking all of the precautions that we need to take to keep our community safe. >> that was right. his men ski reporting officials say they have not ruled out terrorism as a possible motive. the last

day of the year in 2024, came with 3 homicides in oakland. 2 people were killed by gunfire and a 3rd because of a staffing in the east bay kron four's. rob nesbitt joins us now in the studio with more on that paper up. >> stephanie, new year's eve should be about celebrating, but it was a day of violence in oakland. the police activity started with a fatal shooting on 14th street and that it with another on second street. fireworks and gunshots rang off on new year's eve in oakland city. councilmember noel gallo heard them from his neighborhood. it was out of control in my neighborhood there in the fruitvale area on the block. next to me on the block, the sun. >> the fireworks, the gunshots that were going on it started early with police responding to a shooting on 14th street around 07:15am. one person was found shot and paramedics responded, but they were pronounced dead at the scene. the violence continued with the second homicide on 70th ave around 07:45pm when a person was stabbed to death.

lastly, 4 people had to be taken to the hospital because of a shooting on second street shortly after 10:15pm, 3 of them in stable condition. but the 4th person succumb to their injuries youth alive is an open organization that works to create a safer oakland, free of violence. laura greenberg with youth alive says violence at its core is a public health issue. the more we spend time building positive community relationships, connecting individuals with resources and also on the larger sort of more macro level, making sure that we have housing security, income security, job security when it comes to city leadership. oakland's interim mayor nikki fortunato bas only has until january 6th. >> that's what a new city council president takes over as interim mayor followed by a special election in april to name a permanent mayor. >> councilmember gallo says whoever is in the mayor's office needs to push for more police officers hoping for a total of around 800. many of our businesses have left. >> and leaving due to the fact that we need presses for

safety. so for me is very clear that my priority is public safety in the clean city. >> prior to yesterday's crimes. opd reported the city is seeing a 5 year low in homicides and shootings. interim mayor fortunato bas says that's because of oakland cease-fire strategy reporting in the studio. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> residents in the east bay starting off the new year with more sideshows. this is video of about 300 people at a sideshow in vallejo this morning around 01:00am on alameda street. the side show then moved to oakland on market street where participants set off fireworks. oakland police say as soon as they arrived on scene, the spectators ran away. taking a live look now outside at the bay bridge. it's looking like very nice outside, but a reminder from chp that their maximum

enforcement period is still out. officers are keeping a close eye out for a dui driver's seat belt violations and distracted driving. the enforcement period will. and though tonight at midnight with that, we're going to go over and now to chief meteorologist lawrence karnow or check on the forecast. yeah, here we go. 2025 here. whether we like it or not, racing into the new year. we had a few sprinkles around the bay area today. some light showers popping up mainly. >> in the north bay, but a lot of clouds across our skies right now. you can see a lot of clouds sitting across the bay at this hour. a but which is not much energy with this system coming through highs today. little below the average 54 degrees in san francisco. 55 are high in oakland. 63 in san jose and mild 58 in livermore. 53 and conquered. 52 in santa rosa. 57 in half moon bay. all right. well, on this the temperatures, you can see the extremes there. we had a record high originally back in 1996, of 71 record low of 37 degrees. back in 19 0, 1, not

close to any of those numbers. that's for sure. at 7.25. and that sunset getting a little bit longer. now, the days are at 502, in the afternoon. well, we are seeing some showers across the state focused and far northern california for the bay area. now, just lot of passing clouds outside. we're going to see that throughout the night tonight and tomorrow morning, too. but there is a chance of some rain in the forecast. we'll tell you when coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, lauren swell. the new year is now upon us. and that means if that it may be time for recycling your tree. if you want to take it down. crop for charles clifford has some details on what to do with that discarded pine. >> well, the holidays are over. and for most people, it's time to take down the christmas tree. but don't just dump it somewhere. most bay area trash collectors will take it away for you. residents in san jose, oakland and san francisco should place discarded christmas trees next to their trash and recycling bins on regularly scheduled pickup days. tread remove all decorations and the stand

completely clean. trees can be com posted. trees that are flocked will be picked up but not compost. it trying leave the tree and the easily visible spot. if you have a large tree over 6 foot tall, it's cut it in half before leaving it along the curb. and san francisco are college. you will have separate crews out picking up christmas trees from january. 2nd through the 17th recalled. you says that during the first weeks of january, they will collect more than 300 tons of christmas trees. they want to compost as many of those as possible. just tremendous amount of material. >> we want to keep them all out of the landfill. trees come from the earth and we need to turned into compost so we can. >> get him back to the depending on where you live. tree recycling and pickup options could vary. check with your local waste collector for specifics. if you live in an apartment complex or a multi-family dwelling, check with your property manager for details. and finally best not to wait too long. most waste companies will stop making a special effort to collect christmas trees by mid-january. after that left a

>> welcome back. in the south bay, a fire breaks out in a garage overnight in mountain view. it happened just before 3.30, this morning at a

homeowner. bernstein, lane and crews say the family of 5 was able to get out of the house on their own. firefighters say they cut open the walls and the roof of the garage to make sure that all the flames are out. no one was hurt. and crews say that the family was put in temporary housing because of gas and electric that were disconnected. the fire left about $200,000 in damages. it's unclear what caused it. and the east bay crews put out an rv on fire in newark. this happened monday on don barden street. as you can see, the rv was engulfed in flames. no one was hurt and there's no word yet on what started that fire. happening now. it's going to cost you $8 across all bay area. bridges except for the golden gate. voters approved this move back in 2018, there have been 3 waves of toll increases since then last month, officials approved a plan to raise the toll $0.50 every year for the next 5 years. that means by

2030, it could cost you $10.30 to cross most bay area. bridges officials say the money from the increase will go towards bridge maintenance, rehabilitation. and of course, operations. this year, the irs is implementing a few new rules. shannon behnken is here to give us a breakdown. >> stimulus checks during the pandemic offered a much needed financial boost to many families. but others were left out and were unable to fix the mistake with the irs. well, that could be changing if you didn't receive one or more stimulus checks that you qualify for. be on the lookout at the mailbox because the irs says you might be receiving a stimulus check of up to $1400. the irs says this is part of their efforts to distribute around 2.4 billion dollars to taxpayers who fail to claim a recovery rebate credit on their 2021. tax returns as

many as 1 million taxpayers are set to receive these payments. now, changing gears. if you are a small business owner or freelancer who uses payment platforms like venmo and paypal, this is for you tax reporting requirements are changing and depending on how much money you made, the irs will now require these payment companies to issue a tax form 10 99 k detailing earnings income thresholds will then gradually decrease over the next few years for the 2024 tax year, the irs will require businesses to report income from third-party payment apps if it exceeds $5,000 annually, that amount will drop to 2520. 25 and by 2026, any income over $600 will need to be reported. >> shannon behnken reporting. we're taking a live look now outside at downtown san francisco. looking like a beautiful night out there. you

can see all the buildings lit up as we head into 2025. kron 4 chief meteorologist lawrence karnow joins us now with a look ahead. yeah, probably a lot of folks just waking up now after a long night last night enjoying ringing in the new year. >> well, yeah, not a bad start to the new year. couple sprinkles around the bay area today. some mainly north of the golden gate bridge. some light showers there tonight. it's a lot of clouds linger in our skies. not much in the way of rainfall, though, but out of the airports yet people gonna be coming and going now, you know how it can work out. so yeah, the holidays coming to a close san francisco looking good. oakland, san jose are both looking good. no delays reported at our bay area. airports. but we do have the rain, though. the mets making its way into the state. but most of that is located far northern california. you can see that toward eureka a little further south you to get toward mendocino. some rain moving there and some snow up across the shasta, some the higher peaks anyway. but overall, the pattern. yeah, it's still kinda active out there. and so we're going to see these storms rolling in across the pacific, generating some big-time swells. and this next one right here that's

going bring some rain likely on friday and some larger swell is moving along the coastline as we head toward friday, too. so we've got some more rain in the forecast, but not tonight. i think a lot of clouds out there. you might see a sprinkle or 2 not going to be much. temperatures could be a little chilly in the 40's in the 50's we head toward 9 o'clock tonight. and then overall, yeah, high pressure just kind of flattening out and eventually we're going to see that next system punch, too. but not tomorrow. i think we stay dry for tomorrow. then as we get late thursday night and friday, this rain is gonna start push south and we start talking about some more showers here. so you'll see her in the forecast model as we head through the night tonight. a lot of clouds rolling on by but staying dry tomorrow and then we get that rain moving in. it looks like early in the day on friday not to be huge storm, but things could be a little bit wet. maybe the commute. if you're headed back to work, watch out for that. otherwise that may be the last rain we see or at least the 1st half of january. we're going to dry things out here above normal temperatures, other parts of the country are going to believably cold, wet, maybe some record cold. a little wet weather you're talking about for here. maybe that's an excuse not to go to but the

monkey attacks are clenched on his person. officials say the driver, 27 year-old said mohammed was driving under the influence and carrying mounds of marijuana. it's very important not to not see what the other issue in this traffic stop i mean, which is driving impaired. he says no one person needs that much marijuana and what muhammad definitely didn't need was the one month-old spider monkey clinging to his chest. spider monkeys are illegal, cannot possess it is on the endangered species list. definitely to have him here in california. the madera county animal shelter took the little guy in overnight taking advantage of all the snuggle opportunities that we don't have what the monkey needed. as far as for for feeding it with the best thing, which is your common bananas, took offense to not maybe banana food. any time they tried to take the spoon from him, about people. >> but no matter how adorable those big innocent eyes are.

>> baby food labels across the nation now have to show levels of lead america rea . that's in products. thanks to a new california law, baby manufacturers are now required to test their products monthly for heavy metals and disclose those results. it may take time for the newly label products, though, to hit store shelves as the law was inspired by a 2021 congressional investigation that found dangerously high levels of heavy metals and packaged baby foods. a new report suggests credit card loan defaults jump to 50% from 2023. lenders wrote off more than 40 billion dollars in those defaults. that's the highest increase since 2010. the new york federal reserve says credit card debt overall has reached more than a trillion dollars in the 3rd quarter of 2024. sonny bill's fire department is one of just 7 in the state now to receive

continuing coverage tonight on the attack in new orleans killed 15 peo-le and injured dozens more. the fbi is now investigating the incident as an act of terrorism. authorities say a 42 year-old man plowed a truck into a crowd on bourbon street and say he was a u.s. citizen from texas and actually previously served in the army as well. the fbi found an isis flag weapons and other explosives inside the truck. they say they do believe this. he didn't act alone. we're also following developing news at a las vegas where a cyber truck exploded outside of trump tower. authorities say the person in the car died. several others were also hurt and guests at trump international were forced to evacuate. joshua prego pasta reactions from those guests. >> actually, just sleep in on just heard 2 loud explosions and it woke up and basically said tell adam belmont is staying in the 24th floor of trump international. his stuff is still back in the hotel room. we have new information
