reporting. authorities are also looking into a rental car app called after both vehicles use in orleans and vegas were rented from the same company. authorities say they believe it was a coincidence that this happened. but investigators are still looking into it. 2025 is expected to be a busy year at the state capitol. governor newsom and state lawmakers are already talking about their goals for the new year. kron four's capitol correspondent eytan wallace reports. >> together, let's make this a year. we can all be proud governor gavin newsom and his wife first partner, jennifer siebel newsom delivering that message on this new year's day. it comes just days before state lawmakers are set to return to the capitol and right away. they will take part in newsom's special legislative session to allocate 25 million dollars in state funding to california attorney general rob bonta and the california department of justice. all with the goal to help fund a future lawsuit against the trump administration. as we step in a 2025 newsom not mentioning trump by name in this new

year's message, but he did say no matter what challenges lie. ahead california, we will always stand strong. republicans vowing to push back against newsom. special session. they urge the governor to work with trump. there is a better path forward. and unfortunately gavin newsom continues down the same old, tired path. >> 2025 is going to be a very busy year mcgeorge school of law at and professor chris mckay lee says in addition to newsom, special legislative session this year, legislators will also focus on introducing new bills on all kinds of topics, things from ai and social media to perennial issues like housing and homelessness energy policies and insurance. let's get to work. thank you so much. during his welcoming remarks to lawmakers last month, assembly speaker robert reavis announced he is reducing the number of bills each assembly member can introduce from 50 to 35. he called on lawmakers to narrow in on the issue of affordability. our constituents. they don't fill.

but the state of california is working for them. anxious about our state's cost of living. and that's why i'm calling on us. >> to consider every bill this session through their lands. doesn't lower day-to-day costs for families. does it build more housing quickly? does it improve public services in ways that people can actually see and feel? does it help small businesses start thrive. >> on top of all that governor gavin newsom's constitutional deadline to unveil his preliminary state budget is coming up by the end of next week. the non-partisan legislative analyst's office recently released this report showing the state is facing a projected 2 billion dollar deficit in the year to come in 20 to 30 billion dollar deficit in the following years through 2029 when i asked newsom about it ahead of the new year, he responded with optimism amid data showing state tax revenues are coming in higher than expected will be submitting a balanced

budget. we've had some really good revenues of the course. >> in the last 5 months significantly by billions and billions of dollars exceeding our original estimates and expectations. so all of that is very, very good news. >> so here we go. lawmakers will officially return to the capitol on monday reporting at the state tom wallace kron 4 news. >> one of president-elect trump's top priorities when he takes office will be to extend his 2017 tax cuts. that's before they expire at the end of the year. the chair of the house ways and means committee claims letting the tax cuts and jobs act laps. mean, a big tax hike for everyday americans. trump promise on the campaign trail to make the cuts permanent and house republicans agree that it is a top priority. >> we're going to restore our stature on the world stage, get energy policy fixed. make sure that we don't have the largest tax cut in u.s. history imposed upon the american people at the end of next year. but wind when the tax cuts from the trump era

a winter storm warning is going up till thursday at 5 o'clock in the afternoon. really, this just only the beginning, we're going to see some much colder air on the way. and that's kind of hard to imagine. looking fargo, they're expecting a high tomorrow of 8 degrees. only 17 in minneapolis. a 21 rapid city, south dakota. 29 in lincoln, nebraska. 36 in kansas city. but these temperatures really going to take a nosedive well below 0. i think as we head in toward this next couple of weeks here, pretty dangerous cold going to be settling in that being said the west coast is going to be basking dry conditions. in fact, here's the 6 to 10 day precipitation outlook. and you can see all the brown around not only as much of the state, much drier than normal for the bexar. i think we've got one shot of some rain on friday. and then after that, we may not see any rain until after the middle of the month. so yeah, big changes coming our way around the state. you're gonna find some a whether or southern california about 75 in downtown los angeles tomorrow. that's me. nice. warm there. 74 in san diego. you head

outside at the golden gate bridge. traffic moving nicely there. kron 4 chief meteorologist lawrence karnow joins us now with a look for your forecast and also just in and earthquake in ca california. yeah. shaken in the new year already. you get up toward the north. >> near clearlake in ca barry. we've had an earthquake there that the earthquake centered the volcanic region. very common to see numerous earthquakes. there you see all the areas shaded in blue. those are a little bit older, but not one of 4.5 that will get your attention. that's for sure. very shallow. only one mile on the depth. so folks living in and around that area certainly feeling that quite a bit. but tonight we are looking at some high clouds drifting on overhead. otherwise storm clouds going to stay away. i think the focus just to the north, but that'll be for the night tonight and tomorrow we're going to see a lot of clouds passing by. and then overnight on thursday night and friday, here comes rolling right down the coastline into the bay area, bringing rain to start out your day on friday. behind that things begin to dry out as we get into the weekend. i
