we continue our coverage this hour on the deadly shooting in san francisco. a man is dead and a mother and toddler are injured happened just after 8 o'clock this morning on tompkins avenue in the bernal heights neighborhood. police say that the man died at the scene. the woman she was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after she was shot. the little toddler was also rushed to the hospital, but is expected to survive. police have not confirmed the relationship between the victims. the man's father was at the scene telling reporters he's 24 year-old son, shot himself after shooting hit the said childs mother and the child conference. rob nesbitt following this story for us and will bring us a full report on kron. 4 news at 5. if you or someone you know, is struggling with mental health, help is available. 24 7, you can always call the suicide hotline at 9, 8, 8, the violence in francisco continue through the morning. a woman is behind bars accused of shooting and injuring 2 people.

>> in soma, this was on bryant street between 6th and 7th round 10 o'clock this morning. there's no update on the victims. conditions. san francisco's incoming mayor daniel lurie has created a new job in his administration. it is called the chief of public safety. the mayor-elect named former sfpd commander paul. yep, too. the new position lori's office says the safety chiefs primary focus will be on neighborhood safety street behavior, emergency preparedness and responses. >> you know, we're double for sleaze. gets worked, coordinate departments. you know, start with the fentanyl crisis and get moving on is just possible terror first responders. fully staffed for the departments leveraging those resources and identify the community's needs. and you know, it's good see that set

say that were covered. >> that's the goal. san francisco saw 33 homicides in 2024, that's down. 34% compared to the year prior. police chief bill scott has already said san francisco is one of the safest big cities in the country. >> we're following developing news now out of fuller, 10 in orange county, southern california. one person is dead, at least 9 others are injured after a small plane crashed into a commercial building around 2 o'clock this afternoon. directly next to the fullerton municipal airport. you could see earlier a large hole in the building's roof but has so far, no sign of any visible plane wreckage. earlier today, firefighters were seen battling the blaze from inside the warehouse. first responders were also on site treating people and taking them to the hospital. we will certainly keep you updated as we learn more. bourbon street reopened today

after 14 people were killed and more than 30 injured in new orleans when a driver rammed into a crowd early on new year's day is a look from above. earlier today of that area. >> the fbi says the driver behind the wheel acted alone when he drove that pickup truck into a crowd of new year's revelers. reporter mallory smith has the latest. there's been hundreds 100's of leads done just in 24 hours. we're confident at this point. >> that there's no accomplices. during a thursday morning briefing. the fbi reports surveillance video shows shams to dean jabar, the man responsible for carrying out the new orleans terrorist attack planting to iuds along bourbon street between midnight and 03:00am. 90 d located inside a cooler caught the attention of some bystanders, which is why previous reports suggested there were accomplices of jabar. it turns out those are

just patrons on the street that looking looking inside the coolers, right? we didn't know that at first we kind of track all that down to put that to rest. so that's just an example. one of the pieces of information. but there are other pieces of information that. >> after we got to feed and rest a little bit on the ground here, we're able to put together a much more accurate picture. meanwhile, fbi and atf agents were back at the mandeville street house that job or had rented. >> searching for additional evidence. they recovered 2 of his laptops and confirmed the house fire started after jabar was killed by authorities. there's a lot ways that can happen. you could have different time devices. you could have a >> long cord that extended that time. you could also have pressure cookers, put it out to still feel gasoline. and then it went off. there's a lot ways to do it. but that is why our atf national response team is here to answer those questions and get that investigative lead back to our although investigators have carved out some of the case. >> questions remain like why jabar chose a bourbon street.

>> we know that he specifically picked out bourbon street. not quite sure. why mean? i think one can assume that it was lots of people. new year's eve you know, with you know, a a a a target for it for an attack. that's the stuff in the coming days. as far as that path to radicalization, that we're really going to be digging into it. >> the search of the attackers home in houston that has ended the fbi and other agencies. it went in with armored trucks and swat teams, but apparently didn't make any arrests. one may neighbor says the suspect moved in about a year ago and spent time with his mother there. another report seeing him there on new year's eve. the home is on the north west side of houston. it's a neighborhood that people describe as religious and that they feel free to practice their religion. there. >> we're also following developing news about that cyber truck explosion outside trump international hotel in las vegas. the suspect there's

been identified as a u.s. army green beret. we're also learning more about this soldier's actions before the explosion. while investigators search for a motive. reporter gene kang has the latest. there. >> officials confirmed that 37 year-old matt littles burger, a colorado springs resident is believed to be behind the las vegas cyber truck bombing. the u.s. army confirmed that he was an active duty green beret and he had been on approved leave at the time. we haven't even gotten to the phones are the computers which are usually. >> very, very instructive. an informative to us as we investigate. and we've got a lot more work to do to trace him during a press conference. las vegas police and atf officials said they're not ruling anything out3following both domestic and international leads while looking into forensics evidence. >> las vegas police say he had shot himself in the head before the vehicle burst into flames. a handgun was found at his feet. they've also

recovered military id's. we've identified 2 semiautomatic handguns recovered from the tesla. >> we have successfully trace those firearms and i can tell you that matthew live, this bird. lawfully purchased both of these firearms on december. 30th twenty-twenty for the u.s. army also released details about his service. he joined the army in 2006 and had a long career with overseas deployments, including afghanistan. authorities are now looking into a possible connection between him and the suspect in the new orleans attack. >> sources told the associated press they both served at fort bragg, but there was no overlap in their assignments. the fbi and police are currently searching a home in colorado springs, which is believed to be his home. sorry. i don't know what to say. he just he seemed like a normal guy. >> yeah, you know, like when i would let he had a dog, you know, and we would always come out together. at the same time, it seemed like and he'd say hi and sorry yeah, he just

he seemed normal. his wife is very nice. they just have a baby. >> a massive explosion erupted outside the trump hotel in las vegas wednesday morning shaking even the upper floors of the building. guest described the hotel trembling with some on the 24th floor feeling the impact. i like touch the revolving door. >> i was about to go out to get our car. and a lot of fireworks started going off just like dozens of fireworks nonstop. once the fire was under control, authorities discovered gasoline and mortars in the bed of a tesla cybertruck. >> the driver was killed in the blast. 7 others suffered minor wounds. officials are now investigating whether this incident was an act of terroaism. the individual who rented the truck to explode that exploded in las vegas. >> also served as active duty u.s. army. and the fbi is working with the department of defense investigator,

including servicemembers possible motives and all those the workers. >> in other news this afternoon in the south bay, there's a new effort underway to remove problematic homeless encampments along waterways. our charles clifford has details. >> the santa clara valley water district manages 300 out of 800 miles of waterways, creeks and streams across the valley. starting today, they're launching a new effort to clean up some of the most troublesome homeless encampments. the santa clara valley water district estimates that about 700 people are living in encampments on district property startins january second, the district is going to put each of those camps into either a high or low priority category. they're also launching an educational campaign to let people know where they stand. camps that have a small footprint about 12 foot by 12 foot and are creating an environmental or safety hazard and don't cause any access or operational problem for the water district will be considered low priority. those people will be allowed to stay in their camps until they find a place to

move to camps that are obstructing access to flood protection or water facilities thtt pose a safety risk to district staff or the public or are creating an environmental hazard will be considered high priority. the district says they will try to work with those people to improve the conditions of their camp to make them low priority. but if improvements aren't made, the district could eventually move in and remove the camp. the idea is to educate the public first and only remove a camp when it's absolutely necessary. >> we don't want to nor do we have the ability to just go out and sweet pollen count. it's everywhere. we want to encourage good behavior so that we don't have to at the very many encampments. and but but it's to the valley. water will take action when we need to to to to remedy the most egregious environmental and safety. and that if the decision is made to remove a camp, the district says they will provide 72 hours notice before the cleanup work begins. >> they will also try to find housing or shelter for those impacted and try to find

storage space for any personal belongings. but for now in the south bay, charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> all right. let's talk weather as we get a live look above san francisco. plenty of sunshine a little bit warmer. yeah. like that and the weekend cuyler looks like it's going to stay that way. >> well, it is yes, but you have bring that. we're going deal with that in the early morning hours of our friday morning. but right now it is beautiful out there. and yes, we are definitely a bit warmer than we were yesterday. in fact, if you're up in the north bay, you're, you know, 10 degrees warmer than we were this time yesterday. that kind of reflects how it's changed a little bit. and if you look at these temperatures, take a look at the south bay in particular, sunnyvale, san jose city about 66. they were 67 a little bit ago. >> we're up to 62 in the north bay. you can see places like a word right now. fremont in the low 60's to so really nice out there. storm tracker 4 confirming that sunshine, but and there's always a you've got to zoom out and you see where the cloud cover and the rain is. it's really headed up to the pacific northwest. we're gonna catch is the end

of that system. and we're looking at about a 10 about a quarter of an inch of rain. a little bit higher. total up in the north bay, mostly beneficial rain as this rolls through seal. get home tonight. no problem. as you can see here taking about 10, 30 at night. it's the overnight hours early morning hours. this about 04:00am that we start to see some of these showers roll through. that does mean a wet commute. so just be prepared for this. when you wake up tomorrow morning, you look at about 12, 30 you can see this clears out relatively quickly. but still just the little chance of an extra shower did to passing through by the time we get to saturday, though, things are looking really good. i'll be back in a bit. we'll take a look at your seven-day forecast. all right, kai la. still ahead on kron 40's up for a new era in the new year for a historic san francisco flower market. >> we'll get a look at the changes that looming. plus, a multimillion dollar lawsuit settlement from apple after siri spied on people. and more acts of violence in oakland. police investigating 5 deaths across the state.

>> oakland is dealing with a string of violence into the new year. we now know that 5 people have been killed between new year's eve and new year's day. the latest shooting was at 6 o'clock last night on 60th avenue. the person was taken to the hospital where they died also being told that 32 year-old father was killed just hours before that. and yesterday we reported 3 people were killed in oakland. 2 were shot the others in a stabbing incident. no arrests have been made in any of the separate incidents. a woman who died after being hit by a car on the great highway has been identified.

>> the san francisco county coroner id the victim. a 68 year-old john le salais. police responded to the crash site last week on the lowest street. the woman was taken to a hospital where she died. the driver stayed in is cooperating with police. a gofundme has been set up by the victim's daughter. it claims they suffered from dementia and that she wandered out of her home on to the great highway in area where the accident happened. is set to shut down after voters approved measure k in the november election. friday's crash marked the city's 40th pedestrian death of 2024. >> the synthetic opioid fentanyl is cheaper than ever easier to find and is responsible for a surge in overdose deaths all across the country. the drug is often called the invisible killer because the victims don't even know they're ingesting it. kareen wynter gives us a look now at the devastation. it's leaving behind. >> 2 siblings with an

unbreakable bond. >> 18 year-old tyler gordon and his younger sister, jenna. 16 sailed through life together. both both loved music and both teens died in the bedroom of their homes riverside county. 2 separate incidents from fentanyl related overdoses. got on my knees and begged pleaded with god begging him to take me instead to please save them. you know, and the fact i was in that position twice. >> you know, it's both of my kids. it's just it's surreal to me reading parents like tammy line, gordon are at the center of a deadly opioid crisis, crushing communities across america. >> line gordon son, tyler, passed away in 2020. he took what he thought was percocet, but it contained fentanyl that tyler purchased on snapchat. 10 months later, her daughter jenna, died after unknowingly taking counterfeit xanax that

investigators told line gordon was pure fentanyl. neither one of them men to end up dead. most fentanyl shipments are trafficked into the u.s. from mexico. this poison, this drug that's coming in from the cartels is out there. and you need to be careful because if you get your hands on the wrong step, you can die. the drug enforcement administration says seizures of fentanyl, both the powder and pill form are at record levels over the past 2 years. seizures of fentanyl powder nearly doubled with federal agents taking in more than 13,000 kilograms. that's about 30,000 pounds in 2023. as for fentanyl pills, the dea seized more than 79 million of them in 2023. almost triple the amount from 2021. we're taking everything we can off the streets trying to make them safer. >> but the synthetic opioids, there's just an endless amount of that. just the amount of fentanyl that we find. it's it's it's unbelievable. says 23. we've recovered with 3 million fentanyl pills over 150 kilos of powder, fentanyl my family. that's enough fentanyl to kill the entire state of california. the

sheriff's department overdose response task force works with the feds on prosecutions that carries a stiffer sentence. so it's a phenomenal the turn. >> we have over 27 cases in various stages of federal prosecution currently and all those individuals are looking at a 20 mandatory minimum, every drug seizure, every arrest. every conviction is saving lives. but for those didn't get the help in time like tyler and jennifer gordon, they're mom also has a powerful message to spare other families. the heartbreak don't ever assume you're except fentanyl does not discriminate. talk here. kids educate them. what fentanyl is. >> tell him that you're scared that you're going to lose them because the stuff is so dangerous. you that quick. >> alright, weather time as we get a peek outside second day of 2025 and it is a lovely one. it is. and speaking of lovely, here's kyla road day.

>> it is beautiful day out there. no doubt about is the lots of sunshine, especially the sun. starting to go. >> down a little bit. you can see from the east bay. it's just beautiful as it some kind glen lingering off the water as we take a look at the next 5 days are only rain that we've got in. the forecast is going to be that morning rain we have tomorrow after that, the forecast looking pretty good so that low pressure is going to start dipping in. that brings us the showers. but watch what happens very quickly. after that high pressure builds in its a ridge and then it really increases. and as that happens, that keeps any weather away from us. and we get the sunshine and we get some really nice temperatures. got me thinking about our water year. and you can see here as we take a look, we're at about 121% of normal in san francisco. that's pretty good. but notice the east bay in the south bay below normal still. but the north bay way above normal, sitting at about 209% of where we should be for this time of year. so it's a moving target. when we look at these rain totals and it's important that we kind of continue to get the rain as we go through the season. is this pick all of it up? and if you look here at our drought monitor, you can see this really tracks with

where we still need to pick up some of that rain, right east bay and south bay. still a little bit below average and still in abnormally dry conditions. here's a look at the big picture. we have that system tomorrow that comes in in early morning hours. once that's gone, though, that's kind of all we get as we roll through the next 7 days. everything just kind of goes to the north of us heads up to the pacific northwest and we stay dry. that can be a good thing for a minute. but it's not a good thing for too long. so hopefully we'll start to get a little more rain in here right now, though. beautiful day out there. temperatures nice and warm. you can see we're up to about 62 degrees santa rosa. 66 in san jose. so it's a quite nice night. and again, once we get rid of the rain tomorrow, we're dry. we're nice. it's going to be really calm, really lovely witch again. i is the meteorologist have to say, hey, we got to get more rain in here. eventually here, but it's kind of enjoy it yeah, thanks, thanks for. well, it is a new era for the historic san francisco flour market today. dozens of floral vendors set up shop that.

>> apple has agreed to pay 95 million dollars in a lawsuit settlement after the company was accused of using siri to eavesdrop. the repo settlement was fielded dead tuesday out of oakland. was finalized. then it resolves of five-year lawsuit that claims apple would activate the virtual assistant to record conversations. the alleged recordings would even happen when people didn't seek to activate siri. and then those apparently were then shared with advertisers. a court hearing to review the terms is scheduled for february. the fda will begin testing cheese that's made from raw cow's milk for traces of the h 5 n one bird flu virus. raw milk from infected cows can carry bird flu along with pathogens like e-coli and salmonella.

>> now 4.30, we are learning more about the victims of the new orleans terror attack. one of the 14 people killed. he's a dad of 2 whose family says he decided to go down to bourbon street on a whim to celebrate new year's eve. another victim who was an 18 year-old girl who dreamed of becoming a nurse reporter ashley hamilton spoke with some of the victims. families. >> i just hours into 2025, multiple families got a phone call. no one ever wants to get. this is just terrible. it's absolute. >> heard parents screaming and cathy lewis, doria recalled the scene at university medical where they had to wait to learn if their son 25 met through 10 oriol had been killed in the attack. they say they're struggling to process

and hill streets in downtown l a the man was in the driver's seat of the driverless waymo car and then you notice refused to leave. several officers moved in. they opened the door. the man finally got out. he wasn't taken into custody. we still don't know what he was a waymo customer. las vegas man arrested at the coachella campaign rally for president elect trump is scheduled to appear in court. 49 year-old them. miller was arrested in october of charges of carrying a loaded firearm in a public place. a sheriff's deputy making contact with miller at a checkpoint before trump's arrival, mueller filed a lawsuit against the riverside county sheriff for defamation after miller's arrest. the sheriff says that the deputies had, quote, probably stopped a 3rd assassination attempt on the former president. >> today the president is touting his judicial confirmations is the most diverse group yet he appointed about a quarter of all active federal judges during his term

and kron four's washington correspondent maddie beer-temple now reports on the president's remarks, opportunity republicans will soon have to reshape the judiciary. the judge will be independent be fair impartial. president joe biden appointed and the senate confirmed 235 judges to the federal bench. one more than president-elect donald trump in his first term i ran for president made a promise. >> and have a bench that looks like america. the confirmations included the first black woman to serve on the u.s. supreme court and a record number of women, black, latino and lgbtq judges to lower courts. proud of the legacy that we leave for a nation that 235 judges mark, the largest number of confirmations in a single term since the carter administration heritage foundation, senior legal fellow thomas chipping says too much emphasis on race or gender of judges can hurt public perception of the judiciary in jax that the degree of any allergy york

after the middle of the month, the way things look right now. but we do have well more storm. and if you're headed back to work tomorrow could affect your commute early tomorrow morning. out the door right now, kind of hazy out there. nice afternoon around the bay area. a lot of sunshine outside today. really comfortable. a lot of temperatures popping up in the 60's around the bay area today. so nice numbers out there now and looking good. how about 62 degrees in santa rosa on i-66 in san jose. 50 a little cooler in the san francisco. 59 in oakland right now and 57 degrees in livermore. but as we head through the night tonight, we're going to see some changes right now. looking good outside, not much in the way of cloud cover, but as we go through the night, yeah, things are still active in the pacific. and there you go. we've got another storm system kind of winding up. you can see that area of low pressure spinning off the coastline could eventually see that begin to move on shore. so far, northern california get most of that rain. but it's gonna start to sag to the south as we head throughout the night tonight by tomorrow morning. yeah, it's going to get a little gusty in spots that rain going to be coming

down. maybe an inch of rain across some of the coastal ranges. like i said, though, this could be the last one in quite some time. so let's try to enjoy weekend and out the door tonight. you can find a couple passing clouds. otheywise some stars in between a mostly clear as we head toward 7 o'clock this evening. temperatures not as cold as it's been but still getting kind of cool as we head in towards 7 o'clock in the low to about the mid 50's. yep. as we head toward tomorrow, though, things begin to change. that rain begins to move in. and you know what? that's going to bring more snow up in the high country. in fact, boy are looking good up there right now in northern california. well, above the average, 161% of normal on the central sierra nevada. so that some work to do in the southern tier. 75% of normal. all right. thanks, lourdes. good news to report about california's snowpack. after all that snow up there, new measurements from the state department of water resources today. >> show that the snowpack is slightly above average for this time of year. it is good news. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace decided to. >> ahead on he's at the

quadrantids will be most visible during nighttime hours this evening. this is video taken during last year's shower. bright fireballs caused by asteroid. debris may be visible to the naked eye depending on your level of light pollution in the atmosphere. conditions as many as 200 meteors could potentially light up the sky during peak hours overnight across the northern hemisphere for the best results. look up to the northern part of the sky near the big dipper. will we have favorable atmospheric conditions, lawrence, that's the question. yeah. and that may be the big problem overnight. tonight we've got an approaching storm system but you may be able to get a couple of using there. >> before the clouds start to roll in specially in the south bay, the north bay. well, it's going to be tough. go overnight tonight. storm clouds going to be headed our way, grab jacket if you're headed out the door and yeah, look toward the north-northeast. you're likely to see a really neat show the quadrantids very nice meteor
