5:30 pm
>> tonight at 5.30, some good news to report on california's snowpack. new measurements from the state department of water resources show that it's slightly above average for this time of year, which is good. kron four's capitol correspondent eytan wallace reports. >> just take a look at all of this snow elevations, 6800 feet. it's a site. researchers with the california department of water resources say they want to see, but they remind
5:31 pm
us that this is just the beginning of the season and they make clear we need way more where this came from. if you're looking at the california department of water resources for snow survey of 2025. >> the results show in california snowpack stands at 110% of average for this time of year. and 39% of average of where we should be by april. first, i feel pretty good for today and you're icing as the california department of water resources, snow surveys and water supply forecast. a manager he helped facilitate the measurements here at the phillips station upper his results, the snow water content in this area stands at 9 inches and the snow depths 10 to 24 inches. that's significant because the depth of the snow tells us how deep it well, the snow water content tells us how much water it contains water that will eventually flow to reservoirs, agricultural areas and your faucet. so far this season. rice and says things are looking promising thanks to mother nature. we have had a good series of storms that
5:32 pm
have got is a good portion of the way. but he notes that really applies just to the northern sierra region. in fact, this data from the state shows the northern sierra snowpack is more than 160% of average for this time of year. but the central sierra is much less at 94%. and the southern sierra is even worse at 75%. southern california, which doesn't have as many mountains there. they're very dry. >> so we do need more storms regardless to fill our reservoirs and build our snow pack for that april. first date. >> all of it coming after governor gavin newsome made a stop to this very area last spring. his message then take a deep breath this year. but don't quadruple and not a time in your shower. it was. then he unveiled this plan that want to connect natural waterways with manmade storage, all in hopes of capturing more water before it goes to the ocean. today, though, the focus here is on the months ahead. months rising says will be key for california's snowpack each we're expecting to increase.
5:33 pm
>> and every day that we don't get something, our numbers going to drop it snow pack is a good chunk of our water supply. so we'd like healthy snow. >> and the california department of water resources will continue to conduct snow surveys at the beginning of every month through april. we should have a much better idea about the state's long-term snowpack outlook. then reporting at the phillips station elevation, 6800 tom wallace kron 4 news. >> alright, 6800 feet 8 and i will raise you castle peak interstate 80, which is what we're looking at here about 9100 feet. i lawrence, what do you make of that? i think we're going be seeing snow everywhere around those spots overnight. tonight. >> and tomorrow we've got a winter storm warning going up as we're going to see some heavy snow. >> in the sierra nevada, adding to some pretty impressive totals. but what a nice evening out there right now. you're looking over lake tahoe at this time and just a beautiful evening over that gorgeous lake. more snow on the way the winds will be kicking up to winter storm
5:34 pm
warnings there moving up the foot hills. we see that snow level all the way down to about 5500 feet and upwards of a foot of snow across some of the higher peaks. so if you're traveling there tomorrow, that winter storm warning goes into effect, starting at 07:00am so it's going to kind of wrapping up throughout the day in the high country, be extra careful plan on some delays. if you're heading that direction right now, looking good. just some partly cloudy skies in the high country. yep, as you might expect is going to be chilly. 41 south lake tahoe right now for even climb. and 39 degrees now in homewood. but overall, the pattern going to start to shift again. we've got one more storm. there may be a secondary storm coming in on monday that could affect this year, nevada. but this will be the big weather maker for them here in the next 24 hours or so as it begins to move in. so we're going to add to these totals and so far so good, at least in northern california, 161% normal really, you've seen that north of the bay area get to the north. tremendous amounts of rain have fallen lots of snow in the sierra nevada central sierra. you look at the 94% of normal. almost surprising.
5:35 pm
they have 74 5% enrolled in the southern sierra nevada. they just have not had that much. in fact, after the storm system moves on by, they're not going to be a whole lot of snow going up there. so might want to get up there. do some skiing now and then wait for those next storms. probably not coming until the middle of the month. all right, lauren, so we have developing news out of new york city where 10 people were shot outside an event in queens. >> police say the venue was filled to capacity for a private event when 4 gunmen approached shortly after 11:00pm. and they just opened fire and people waiting to get inside 6 women. 4 men ranging in age from 16 to 20 years old. they were taken to the hospital. they are expected to survive. the gunman got away, though. police are investigating whether the incident is gang related. a man is in custody after he took over the driver's seat of a self-driving robotaxi happened just before 1 o'clock this morning on 5th and hill streets in downtown l a and the man was in the driver's seat of the driverless waymo car refused to get out.
5:36 pm
several officers, though, moved in the door, open them and finally did get out. he was taken into custody. we still don't know if he was a waymo customer. >> san francisco police use the fight retail theft. it's part of a growing trend for law enforcement in california. officers say the technology is helping them get all kinds of situations. but some are concerned and questioning whether law enforcement agencies are using this technology too much. chip yost looks at both sides of the issue. >> he's he committed a crime and he's in a position of advantage, basically walking out of the car. >> in anaheim, corona, police used a drone to keep eyes on an armed man in a car on the 91 freeway. and i want let but don't people fighting about health in forward to a drone beat officers to this home in gave them a timely warning based am i?
5:37 pm
>> and what looks like day for 7 and so i told him to hold off. >> there is no immediate threat to the other person. >> and in fountain valley, you're buying. police had a training exercise that involves sending the drone indoors to look for a barricaded suspect. >> one of the advantages of drones is it allows us to remain at a safer distance while sending in eyes to be able to figure out the situation. the common thread in all of those enarios is that the drone use was in response to an emergency situation. what what's going on in beverly hills is next level at the entrance to our cities. we have big sign board to say welcome to beverly hills police drone in news. >> that's right. in addition to the roughly 2500 surveillance cameras throughout the city that are monitored here at the police department's real-time watch center, beverly hills also
5:38 pm
employs pilots who fly a drone from the watch center to actively patrol the city 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. lieutenant todd withers oversees the program. >> and they can fly remotely to any call for service. any suspicious activity and then we can go and check out. critical infrastructures will maintain security. >> so whether you're here on rodeo drive or somewhere else in beverly hills, it's quite possible. a police drone could be up above keeping an eye on. >> you think that's a good or a bad idea to use a drone like that? i think overall it's probably a good idea. i think it can be a good idea as far as like safety miss. but i also think that it may be. >> invading some privacy and the ways she's not the first person to raise that 2023 report by the aclu. >> did well? law enforcement likes to tout certain success stories that are appealing to everybody.
5:39 pm
>> but the real question is, where's what are the limits going to be here? jay stanley authored that report and he believes beverly hills is use of drones goes too far. don't think anybody wants live in a world where when you walk out of your home, there's police drones buzzing overhead with powerful cameras. you don't know if they're focused on you and that they're up there all day and you get home at night should be limits on when law enforcement departments launch drones. they should be for true emergencies. only on that last point, lieutenant weathers disagrees. mean, going to be hearing and white manderino he says the pro active use of the drones has proven useful time and again in stopping and solving crimes. but he says he does understand. >> the privacy concerns. and i think that they have valid concerns and we try to alleviate those concerns through policies through. >> ensuring that we're we're transparent what we're doing. certainly don't want someone
5:40 pm
flying over my house and looking at, you know, my family and my backyard so. we try to adhere to that unless there's a call for service. >> that was chip yost reporting for us as of 2022. the last year we have numbers here. more than 1000 police departments in the u.s. were using drones and that number has only grown since. >> still ahead, as the nation prepares to say goodbye to former president jimmy carter. >> we have reaction from plains, georgia. first, though, a mother opens up about how fentanyl killed her 2 children. we dig deeper into what's being done. try to keep what's being done. try to keep the drug off the streets.

5:45 pm
30,000 pounds in 2023. as for fentanyl pills, the dea seized more than 79 million of them in 2023. almost triple the amount from 2021. we're taking everything we can off the streets trying to make safer. but the synthetic opioids, there's just an endless amount of that. just the amount of fentanyl that we find. it's it's it's unbelievable. 23. we've recovered with 3 million fentanyl pills over 150 kilos of powder, fentanyl and my family. that's enough fentanyl to kill the entire state of california. the sheriff's department overdose response task force works with the feds on prosecutions that carries a stiffer sentence. so it's a phenomenal the turn. >> we have over 27 cases in various stages of federal prosecution currently and all those individuals are looking at a 20 mandatory minimum, every drug seizure, every arrest. every conviction is saving lives. but for those didn't get the help in time like tyler and jennifer gordon, they're mom also has a powerful message to spare other families. the heartbreak don't ever assume you're except fentanyl does not discriminate. talk here. kids educate them. what fentanyl
