everywhere else. so here are the weather headlines. it's widespread rain is very first friday of 2025 and it continues through the afternoon and then by sunset. i think we'll start to see some drying. maybe if you post final showers after sunset, but it dries out very quickly. it moves away. but the same storm triggers a high surf advisory that goes into effect tonight and continues through 3 o'clock on sunday morning dangerous surf. rip currents are very, very treacherous could be some sneaker waves. a very high likelihood moderate to high likelihood of sneaker waves and the 18 to 25 feet. so have a good idea to avoid the beach and certainly not a great day to go swimming or surfing the dry weather then starts in tomorrow. and it continues not only this weekend, but this week into next weekend and even then into next week. so we've got some dry weather coming. but in jail, enjoy the rain today. back to you. all right, along.

>> on the bay bridge while the rich with summer failed get back to see the covered in water. 9 minutes. go get bridge 20 minutes. and remember, you hop on bart ways slows trains down during rainy days. >> 702 happening today in the south bay, santa clara valley water district will begin their efforts to remove problematic homeless encampments along waterways. crawford's will trend is in san jose with more on that will. >> there's a new ordinance in place that allows the santa clara valley water district to go along waterways and remove unhoused people. they can do it. it doesn't mean that they will do it as they realize homelessness is a problem in san jose, but not just here, but throughout the state. so they want to work with the unhoused people and we are talking dozens, if not hundreds of them along the waterways and they can do it. the law says they have the right to protect health and public safety but homeless advocates and the water

district. they both agree on this. removing them will not solve the problem. it just moves in from one place to another that there is a need, obviously for long-term housing. so what they want to do is do outreach go along those waterways and they're very important because they don't want to be contaminated because obviously millions of people depend oe the water for everyday use and they want to m% make sure that that remains clean. what they will do is move along those waterways work with the unhoused people to at the very least tell them to tidy up to make sure not to throw anything into the waterways. this is an ongoing problem. they have humanity behind this just because they can for now. it does not mean that they will remove the announce. back to you. it's already cost 4 heat your home this year. pg e customers are facing a new rate hike in the new year coffers kerman reports.

>> along with bridge tolls and bart fares, bay area residents will also see gas bills going up this month. >> pacific gas and electric says compared to last month, the cost of using gas in your home will go up an average of $9 a month while those on discounted rates will see a $7 increase, it will actually be less expensive for customers to turn on their lights. regular customers will see electric bills go down average of a dollar a month compared to last month. well, those and discounted rates will see their average monthly bill go down $8.50. >> we've got to fix a broken system where there are no limits to how much >> he didn't. can ask for an increase how many times a year and no limits to how many times the public utilities commission can say yes, martone is with the utility reform network. >> he says basic gas and electric service has become unaffordable for many in california. and it's time the

deficit. oakland fire fighters are launching a public education campaign in hopes residents will help them stop the oakland city council from closing to fire stations this month and possibly for more in the spring. the chief is expected to speak at a news conference at 12 15 this afternoon. happening in the south bay, the man who was hit by a car in san jose last month is died from his injuries. san jose police say the it happened this evening in the evening of last month. area of hokkaido drive near flickinger avenue when the man was on a cross walk. he was taken to the hospital for life-threatening injuries but died over a week later. it was the 48th traffic death of 2024. time now 707. another big story that we're following just 2 days into the new year. >> san francisco police are now investigating 2 shootings, one of them resulting in a man being killed and a woman and toddler injured kron four's. rob nesbitt was at the scene where family members talked about what they believe happened. san francisco police

say today's shooting was an isolated incident and there's no threat to the public. the father, the man who was killed says his son shot himself after shooting 2 others had to that. anthony thomas was in tears while police investigated the home where he says his son, antoine thomas, was shot and killed according to thomas, the 24 year-old shot himself after shooting his one and a half year old son and the child's mother. is >> for for some strange i i i i didn't i didn't get a chance to make it here. time. stop it. now he's gone. >> police were called to the residence on tompkins avenue. san francisco just after 08:00am thursday for reports of a shooting responding. officers found a man and woman injured. the man died at the scene and the woman was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. a toddler connected to the shooting in bernal heights was also taken to the hospital. >> poplar suffering from a gunshot wound was transported to a local hospital. injuries

wee hours this morning and now it's spreading southward. sfo. >> it's wet. lots of rain across the bay area. mild rain, not not strong amounts of rain, but still you see. >> heading across the bay area, we're going to see rain off and on throughout the day and then things will change the storm that's bringing us. the rain is also kicking up the surf. surf is up 15 to 18. 25 foot waves and also some sneaker waves are quite possible. so here on the beach, it could be very dangerous speaker waves arrive unexpectedly and can really cause problems. so if you're could be some minor beach flooding as well. probably a good idea not to be there. not the day to go surfing. not the day to go swimming. futurecast shows we get the precipitation across the bay area. here we are in the early afternoon.

light rain for the most part, maybe a few cells of moderate rain. and look how quickly we dry out just after sunset starts to look pretty dry. we could still see a few raindrops and there's snow in the sierra nevada and then a ridge builds in. you know what that means? that means high pressure. that means dry conditions. and is this ridge built-in? it pushes the storm's way to north. the storms can't get here for quite a few days. quite a few weeks is matter of fact. this riches will build in and even bring us some offshore winds. and that is a very dry direction. if you're thinking of going to the sierra nevada the day, maybe wait a day. winter weather advisory is in effect, gusting winds could be like 100 miles per hour in the upper ridge is. we'll see some snow. we'll see some wind, maybe some downed tree limbs, maybe some downed trees and very dangerous conditions. if you try to travel across the passes, such as donner out rossa, maybe just wait a day. rainfall totals. more impressive in the northwest part of the state, as you might expect around here,

to the east bay, his berkeley police are investigating an attempted kidnapping, the 7 around 7.25. yesterday morning in the area of 9th and asked street right near university avenue. police say a woman was walking with her son when a man and a woman and white man pulled a right next to them try to grab child, the parent and that's how they were able to get away and they were not hurt. in the east bay. firefighters pulled a person from a burning home out in antioch, the contra costa county fire protection district says this happened thursday morning on mandarin way. the victim was the only person in the home. we had to be taken to the hospital and we still don't have any information on their condition. there was no damage to other homes and the cause is still being investigated. 7.17, and for your money this morning only 2 u.s. based airlines were among the top 10 most on time. airlines. >> and there's another sign the job market is healthy. jane king is live at the new york stock exchange with those stories. a j. >> john. good morning to so

yes, jobless claims hit 8 month low this week. so now part of it was it was the end of december. lot of people may be busy maybe didn't file for those unemployment benefits, but still it is a sign of the consistently healthy labor market relatively few layoffs. what companies are turning to new ways to dismiss a poison. the hybrid work era. the wall street journal reports some employers no longer feel obligated to deliver bad news. face-to-face zoom calls, emails, even text messages to dismiss employees are becoming more common. well, delta and united are the only 2 u.s. airlines that were in the top 10 global airlines for being on time. the international air traffic association delta at 83% of its flights on time. that was the third-best globally. united was 81% coming in 10th air travel demand continues to be very strong, especially international trips and tour operators, travel agency. cruise lines reported growing demand from solo female travelers, especially older

>> brentwood police arresting an oakley man after a foot chase that led along highway 4. they say it happened last friday near lone tree way and slat ranch road. it officer spotted 42 year-old david ortega who had 2 outstanding felony warrants when the officer tried to pull him over or got out of the car, just began running away after a short chase along highway officers arrested ortega. police say he was carrying brass knuckles. >> a woman in jail after allegedly vandalizing a car and threatening the owner with this dagger in fairfield on new year's day, fairfield police. she's a call from a woman claiming the suspect. 59 year-old crystal perry, port pain on a new cars last tires. say the victim confronted her and that's when perry allegedly brandished the dagger. payne was arrested and

booked into the solano county jail. will the labor union representing thousands of dockworkers in the u.s. they're returning to the negotiation table as another strike looms international longshoremen's association and united states maritime alliance they're set to continue contract discussions on tuesday. this comes after nearly 45,000 dockworkers went on a three-day strike in the fall. a temporary deal was reached in october which granted workers a 62% wage hike over 6 years while issues regarding automation remain unresolved, the new deal is not reached by january 15 workers could carry out another strike. >> well, in injured cat finally rescued after being stuck up in a tree for over 5 days in vacaville. we're told the local fire department could help because its ladder truck was out of service and people there couldn't locate a letter tall enough to make the rescue. ultimately a worker from solano sides was able to help out the cat is now

this team's familiar, doesn't it rain approaching areas stretching throughout the morning across the bay area? lot areas at this point are wet and we're going to have rain for a day. it will clear out by tonight, generally light. but look at this radar returns showing some areas of yellow and even some orange. so could be some pockets of heavier rain embedded. the same storm is kicking up a high surf advisory and this is a concern for dangerous, potentially life-threatening waves. so the surf is really, really strong. the waves are 18 to 25 feet high. also, they're dangerous rip currents that are in effect and also their minor. coastal flooding is a problem. so this is not a place to be surfing in fracking. everything want be walking on the beach is because this sneaker waves could be a big problem there. moderate to likely according to the national weather service. these a way to come out seemingly out of nowhere, unexpected and they could sweep people and pets off off the beach. don't go there

tomorrow. we'll start to calm down. but that high surf advisory does go in effect through the weekend in the meantime, the most rain in the northwest part of our state. but here across the bay area, we still have some pretty good amounts of rain about 44 hundredths in hayward, a 3rd of an inch in livermore, san francisco, a quarter of an inch. so it really varies on where you are, as you might expect. a winter weather advisory is in effect. we've see warnings and watches across the sierra. this is not a good day to travel up there because there could be very difficult traveling can m concerns as you start to head to the mountain passes places such as mount rose donner pass echo. so maybe go tomorrow. could see very gusty winds gusting up to 100 miles per hour and some of the highest peaks 45 miles per hour, lower elevations. and of course, there's snow, ford maybe 4 inches or so right at lake level and higher amounts. so if you want to get away tomorrow will be a perfect day to do pretty much anywhere

year. always good news. kron four's 8 on wallace has that story. well, just take a look at all of this snow at elevations, 6800 feet. it's a site. researchers with the california department of water resources say they want to see, but they remind us that this is just the beginning of the season and they make clear. >> we need way more where this came from. if you're looking at the california department of water resources for snow survey of 2025. >> the results show in california snowpack stands at 110% of average for this time of year. and 39% of average of where we should be by april. first, i feel pretty good for today and you're icing as the california department of water resources, snow surveys and water supply forecast. a manager he helped facilitate the measurements here at the phillips station for his results. the snow water content in this area stands at 9 inches and the snow depths 10 to 24 inches. that's significant because the depth of the snow tells us how deep it well, the snow water

content tells us how much water it contains water that will eventually flow to reservoirs, agricultural areas and your faucet. so far this season. rice and says things are looking promising thanks to mother nature. we have had a good series of storms that have got is a good portion of the way. but he notes that really applies just to the northern sierra region. in fact, this data from the state shows the northern sierra snowpack is more than 160% of average for this time of year. but the central sierra is much less at 94%. and the southern sierra is even worse at 75%. southern california, which doesn't have as many mountains there. they're very dry. >> so we do need more storms regardless to fill our reservoirs and build our snow pack for that april. first date. >> all of it coming after governor gavin newsome made a stop to this very area last spring. his message then take a deep breath this year. but don't quadruple not a time in your shower. it was. then he unveiled this plan that want

degrees. so it's warm little bit. gusty winds, especially this afternoon. those winds kick up. i could just find the biggest gusts in nevado at 20 mile per hour gusts mid-afternoon 15 mile per hour gusts for concord, 18 for a nap and 16 in livermore. so you can pick your spot but the winds die down and become quite not really a big factor. what is a big factor is what's happening at the pacific coast. it's a high surf advisory that is in effect for tonight into sunday. this is for dangerous, potentially life-threatening waves. these waves are huge. they're 18 to 25 mile. excuse me 18 to 25 feet high waves and there also could be sneaker waves, waves that appear to come out of nowhere and sweep across the beaches and the rocks jetties. and piers, you don't want to be standing there because you could be swept out to sea. dangerous rip currents could also pull you out to sea. so also could be minor coastal flooding. that is really not the place to be for today.

futurecast shows that rain moves through quickly and after sunset, much of the bay area's dry, we'll still see maybe some post final showers. but by tomorrow, a ridge builds in. and we're going to talk to see big change in the pattern. dry weather and even offshore breezes as the days go on. we're going to see some dry weather not only for this weekend into next week and the next weekend after that. and maybe even a week after that. so the rainfall totals from today's storm not terribly impressive in leicester in eureka, but 23, 100's of an inch of rain in san francisco. actually brought down the forecast models back to the minute. the amounts compared to earlier this morning. 2300's in concord, 1500, nevado and santa rosa, only about 2 tenths of an inch. alright, temperatures this afternoon. mild mainly in the 50's pretty much everywhere. you look, 57 degrees in golden gate park. if you head down to the coastline montero, 56 and you head to the bay shoreline.

again, these numberstand there's no big change. we're just no way around mid 50's upper 50's and even a few areas in the low 60's. hello, san jose and santa clara. you're the winners today with temperature actually peaking in the 60 maybe 56 livermore. 55 amanda, this is, you this is not much variation. 56 sonoma and 55 degrees in stinson beach. a look ahead shows this is the wet day and then things dry out should be just spectacular for the weekend with fresh, clean air. and then we start to warm things up just a little bit as we head into the workweek and beyond. we're going to see precipitation free weather forecast for the next couple of weeks. in fact, the climate prediction center says through at least january 12th, drier than normal conditions for the entire west coast. that includes the states of oregon and washington and california that brown color shows considerably drier than normal. right back to you.

>> governor gavin newsom signed several laws that will go into effect this year given cities a lot more tools to crack down on illegal sideshows so assembly bill. 21 86 spans on a common role law. if the sigal happens in a parking lot, cars could be impounded some of bills 18 or 17, 1978 in less police impound cars that are due to be part of an encouraging a sideshow without having to take some money into custody. supporters of the bill say it will prevent sideshows from going on to different locations and keep roads safe. critics say the bill will target anybody with a car that happens to be close to a sideshow assembly bill. 30 85 clarifies and strengthens the ability of police to seize cars and told him that's towards extended sideshows. and last is in bill. tony. 807, clarifies that a sideshow is also known as a street takeover gives prosecutors more leeway when they head to court. well, is allowing 0 emissions vehicles with one person in the carpool lane.
