thanks for joining us on kron parties at 5. i'm vicki liviakis. i'm grant lotus. our top story tonight. oakland's fire chief says the closing of 2 fire houses. >> this coming monday will definitely have an effect on people who live and work in those areas. yet the closing of oakland hills fire station. 25 28. it's part of the city's attempt to close 129 million dollar deficit as kron four's. dan kerman reports the chief believes the station's marked for closure will have the smallest effect on oaklanders. having this fire station here. >> it's small, but it. and the people are amazing. and it's really upsetting. jill jagan lives around the corner from oakland hills fire station. 25. >> on monday, the firehouse will be shut down until the end of june to help the city of oakland balance its budget. >> the budget in oakland

obviously in a crisis level and we. we really don't feel like. we should be. >> the ones from under the bus fire station. 28 is the other oakland hills fire house that will be shuttered for 6 months on monday. together, the closures are expected to save the city 5 million dollars. there are no fire house that we can afford the clothes we need every firehouse we have. and then some. but we feel like we can. adequately cover these 2 firehouse, the make sure that our community still receives a high level of service that they're that they've become accustomed oakland fire. chief damon covington says after getting the directive from the city administrator and the city council and analysis determined running out stations. 25 28, which are less busy during the winter and spring. what have the least impact on the community station. 21, which is centered within 4 miles of both fire houses. we'll handle the bulk of 25 28 calls. but less

impact does not mean no impact. >> there are going to be delays delivery. but when you call 9-1-1 and it is going to show up covington says come july first, both oakland hills fire houses will reopen and different stations will be browned out. should that be mandated by the city council and the station closures the end of it. another 4 stations are slated to close sometime in february unless the oakland city council decides to make changes. in the oakland hills. dan kerman kron, 4 news. the violent start to the new year in oakland continues tonight, police are looking for the person who shot and killed someone just before midnight along 12th street. >> near the intersection of 20nd, the victim was taken to the hospital where they died. as always, police are hoping for leads from the public. for the second year in a row, someone vandalized. oakland's lake merritt during hanukkah, the anti-semitic graffiti was

found yesterday on the last night of the jewish holiday. the hateful message was spray painted on a concrete slab next to a menorah. it has since been cleaned up another man or in the same area was vandalized on the 6th night of hanukkah last year. >> investigators are searching for anyone who may have been sexually assaulted by this man. he's been arrested after a woman reporting he sexually assaulted her while he gave her a massage at the spa on meadow glen avenue and a broadway police did not name the spa but the water land spas. the only one in that area he previously worked in alameda and contra costa counties. investigators encourage victims to come forward. >> the controversy surrounding san mateo county sheriff christina corpus is continuing into the new year now. a report against the sheriff was released last year following which followed calls for her to resign. yeah. but the sheriff is now countering with a complaint against the county

that claims discrimination kron four's rob nesbitt spoke with her attorney today about that alleged discrimination. >> this 5 page claim filed against the county of san mateo by sheriff christina corpus is lawyer was filed on december 3rd. and if there's a claim that there are some in the county who still believe that law enforcement is a, quote, white man's world. the claim filed against san mateo county says this is a case of discrimination and harassment against sheriff christina corpus. her attorney brad gage says county leaders do not want either a woman or latinx person as head of their sheriffs department. sheriff corpus tried to just >> the a team player and work with the system. but when she continued to be more wind again and again, she had no choice but to representation calls for the sheriff's resignation started after a scathing 400 page report was done by the county's independent investigator. she was accused of racism, retaliation, homophobia, abuse of power and having a romantic

relationship with the assistant. sheriff gates says the allegations were based on an incomplete investigation with poor timing is being treated differently. in connection with. >> first of recall, that never been done before. and that now. is going to end after she's out of office. the amount of the claim against the county is significant at 10 million dollars. legal analyst steven clark says the government claim is a precursor to a lawsuit. >> and now the county will have to respond to see if the legal process moves forward and this could get very ugly because now share of corpus, if she does follow lawsuit will have to sit for a deposition. >> and that's something that she has not engaged in with the county up to this point, the san mateo county board of supervisors has placed an amendment on the march ballot asking voters to grant them the power to remove the sheriff from office. sheriff corpus will be speaking with her lawyer about the claim against the county on monday afternoon. >> reporting in the newsroom.

i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 now. the big story ton.ght, the department of justice has reached an agreement. antioch police department over the investigation into race discrimination. this is connected to a series of racist text messages that were exchanged between police officers, those texts which were sent by officers back in 2020 in 2021, they came to light in 2020. 33 in total, 17 officers were investigated under this new agreement. antioch police are going to hire an expert law enforcement consultant. will update the department's policies and training on a variety of topics, including use of force hiring and non discriminatory policing and require the department to review how it collects and analyzes democratic demographic rather data. the agreement will be in place for the next 5 years. the antioch police department says thi agreement shows their dedication to fostering trust transparency and accountability within the

police department and it will ensure officers uphold integrity and fairness while addressing misconduct effectively. >> a community is coming together to help raise money for a victim of a hit and run in vallejo. friends and family set up a gofundme for mel jones here after he was hit by a car last month. they say the accident left his wheelchair destroyed. police say this was monday, december 20th. so far no arrests have been made. police also say nobody was seriously injured. fortunately the money raised will go directly towards replacing the wheelchair. we have a link for the gofundme on our website. kron 4 dot com. >> the santa cruz wharf is set to reopen this weekend. it has been closed since being damaged by big waves on december. 23rd prince charles clifford has more. >> here in santa cruz on friday, the war remains close. take a look behind me there. you can see they've still got the the entrance blocked off older. they are allowing some cite officials and business owners and repair crews to go in and out as they prepare to

reopen the wharf on saturday morning, the city of santa cruz says that following an engineering assessment and sonar examination of the under structure of the war, they believe that it is safe to reopen. obviously the far end of the war that broke free during those big waves on december 23rd that sections could remain closed off, but they say the rest of the work is safe. they also say the coast guard has completed a sonar examination of the area and they've located some heavy equipment, including a crane that fell into the water back on december 23rd. they say they believe that stuff is just sitting underneath the water and not causing any problems for neighbors. they say it's a relief that this iconic war will be reopened. i think it's probably a good idea. there's a lot of people that depend on those jobson. >> the tourists love them and it's the worst, a beautiful place. so i hope it opens hope. it's all good. another reopening ceremony will be held at 10:00am on saturday. following that. all the restaurants and shops out of the work will be reopened and the public can go back out

there as well. but for now in santa cruz, charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> all right. well, blustery there in santa cruz to start the day. and this is the way we end the day golden gate bridge ship about to pass underneath. but in between at least in some parts of the bay, you had a good amount of sunshine. yeah, look at it. it's pretty foggy out there. you think those fog horns are going to be blasting, lawrence? yeah, they might get those things going by some accident over around parts of the bay area. tonight. cold front swinging through bringing some rain today and we've got more storms spinning out the middle of the civic. so >> likely going to see some more large waves moving in as early as tonight. you're looking toward half moon bay right now. couple of folks walking out along the coastline. those waves, not that largest yet, but that will soon change. we could see maybe some 18, maybe even some. 25 footers along the coastline specially on west and northwest facing beaches. so you got to be extra throughout the weekend. strong rip tides, of course, to go along with that. so service

kentucky congressman tom massie already said he would vote against johnson. >> and other republicans like south carolina congressman ralph norman also nominated others for speaker norman. jordan. but then most change their tune and voted for johnson. some gop members had concerns about federal government spending and wanted assurances from johnson that he has a plan to tackle it. johnson said he will be transparent about where tax dollars are spent and find better ways to use them. he's an honest broker. >> he shows you his true beliefs face value, michigan congresswoman lisa mcclain supported johnson. >> as did tennessee congressman mark green. this is about the trump agenda. new york congressman nick langworthy said president-elect donald trump's endorsement of johnson should be enough. this is the quarterback he's chosen for the cheap. >> in it is it is time that we come together as expected

conditional discharge. that means the case will be closed without jail time probation or a fine. alright, weather time here as we get a live look at sfo. a high surf advisory goes into effect tonight. officials say waves could be as high as 25 feet. and, you know, that means the surfers are, you know, blood drawn to it like a to a flame. i guess i don't know that is a yeah. out there. all those guys go out the mavericks, right? really surfing on these mountains out there. >> rolling in along the it's got to be careful. dangerous waves out there. some very cold water. so you get hypothermic in a hurry. but we have another storm system roll through again today. of course, the storms moving across pacific jenner these large swells during winter months. lot of clouds out there right now. some patchy fog, even a chance of a few scattered showers. but nice little rainfall overnight, really a beneficial rain, almost half an inch in santa rosa, almost a 3rd of an inch in napa just under that in richmond, temperatures go checked in 18, 100's to tents

in oakland and just over a 10th of an inch of rain in san jose. so really nice little soaker outside. but this could be for quite a while here. we're going through very dry period here. while the rest, the country is going to get into some very cold weather. but snow continuing up in the high country right now. the bay-area drying things out a bit now, but still a chance of scattered light showers. we head through the evening tonight. then things are going to taper off after midnight tonight and then quieting down as we get through the weekend. tonight, if you're headed out, the door might want to bring that umbrella. just in case we likely to see a chance of showers as we get toward about the 8 o'clock 9 o'clock hour, especially in the north bay. i think we're going to see another round of some showers possibly moving in. then we'll start to dry things out as we head toward midnight. but getting ready for the weekend love to get some plans. i think it's going to be a nice weekend. we're not gonna be cloud-free, but i think will be rain free. most of that rain going to move up to the north now as high pressure begins to strengthen the jet stream will begin to lift and that's going to direct all the storms up in the pacific northwest will dry things out here in the bay area. and that may be setting the stage for what looks like an extended

dry period here in the bay area. look at those computer models. boy, it pushes that rain down more than a couple weeks now. so, yeah, like to see that this or the really the heart of the rain season. so we'd like to get that rain back. but boy, every year's different and this year, maybe we get back into some heavy rain near the end of the month. to especially for the south bay am santa rosa's. got a ton of rain right talking right? yeah. i think california mean to hundreds of an inch of rain. that's all they've seen. how it's over. i mean, that is just bone will. hopefully this is just a few week respite and the effect it will get right back into things. thank you, after the break, governor newsom takes aim at ultra. >> processed foods, the executive order ramping up efforts to increased nutrition and health standards.

people in the car. police say the tracker eliminates the need at times for dangerous high speed chases. sounding the alarm. the u.s. surgeon general. >> once more specific warning labels on. he issued an advisory warning today about the strong link between alcohol consumption and at least 7 types of cancer. those include a cancer, liver and throat cancers. doctors are advocating for policy changes, including alcohol warning labels, updated consumption guidelines and expanded education efforts similar to anti-tobacco campaigns. according to the advisory, alcohol is the 3rd leading preventable cause of cancer here in the u.s. after smoking and obesity, there are about 100,000 alcohol related cancer cases and 20,000 deaths annually >> way back in the 1950's people didn't realize that cigarette smoking causes cancer. and so what's exciting about say the surgeon eeneral saying, ok, we need to recognize this and broadcast it more. is that that just

that awareness can help people, you know, realize that a behavior that, you know, may have some benefits. there are certainly some time social benefits to trick. also has some farm and they need to be aware of that. and certainly the more you drink, the more you're at risk, especially for, you know, all sorts of health outcomes, including cancer is one that most people just don't usually think of with alcohol, they think of driving and violence. dr. judith khan of ucsf associate hopes that women who are drinking more will heed the advice, especially given the cancer risks. congress is going to have to act for any changes to occur, though labels on drinks currently warned about the dangers of drinking while pregnant or before driving and operating. other machinery. the guidance hasn't been updated since 1988. >> governor newsom has issued an executive order to crack down on what's being described as ultra-processed foods. these foods include but aren't limited to types of cookies.
