>> 9.30, this morning live look outside of the golden gate bridge looking very pretty out there day. >> that is a lot of sunshine in store for you today. we'll see little bit more than we saw from yesterday. how about that? already? blue skies taking hold in downtown san francisco. you will notice we did have this little collection of clouds early on, moved on through, but now we're left with the clear skies. so enjoy that for about a good 6 hours or so. then afternoon, we'll start to see some build up of some scattered clouds. temps pretty much in the 40's. at this hour. we've improved from those chilly 30's this morning in a couple of pockets, particularly well inland. but go back to future cast. this is what i'm talking about. you can see some of those scattered clouds making way clear on out clouds return. there's a low level moisture mixes out and some scattered clouds aloft. so we have a big switch that will happen by monday afternoon as everything area go look at how the sweeps on through. we have offshore
9:15 am
winds developing both aloft and at the surface, it's very apparent here projecting the wind gusts, right? just little county spilling into the east bay and just about the entire beijing will notice there by tuesday morning. you're going to be hearing a lot in southern california about probably unfortunately some fires being started and so forth because of the shift in the winds are to have some fire watches that have been posted in this looks like a little week-long event. pretty much for them going forward. the breakdown for us is today. variable clouds. morrison, though we have mild temps, 60 ish near about 60 for tomorrow with still this few clouds in our warmest day looks to be about thursday heading into next weekend before another offshore wind event takes hold lower. 60's going on again for highs we expect for today and the next couple of days. again, keeping at lower 60's and scattered clouds as part of the program and to get more into that, a longer range forecast for you and a bit, stephanie. >> all right, dave, thanks. as we settle into the new year, many of us are feeling the pressure of resolutions and the stress that can come with
9:16 am
them. joining us live now is doctor jennifer douglas, clinical psychologist to discuss how we can all better manage new your anxiety and sets a realistic goals for the new year. dr. douglas, thank you so much for joining thank you for having me. so great to have you back. so tell us first, any what triggers that anxiety and stress around setting those new year's resolutions? what are some common things? there's a lot of social pressure around new year's being this time where everybody needs to make new resolutions change everything about themselves. >> make their home completely qatar for clutter and work out 5 times a week. those around this time of yes. so on what are some common mistakes you say that people make when they're sitting those new year's resolutions? i find that at least what i'm speaking to. >> just, you know, folks, a friend groups in a sometimes people tend to shoo for those pie in the sky. yes, we can get we can get a bit unrealistic. we can take on too much too quickly. we can bite off more than we can so i hear people who sort of want
9:17 am
to healthy eating is really big one around new year's revelry. showing and so people say, ok, i'm going to do whole 30 and no sugar and no fat and no fried food and everything like that. and while i'm all about healthier eating, that's fantastic. we want to try with say eating 4 servings of fruits and vegetables day. we don't want to go all, you know, 0 to 60. all at once. yes, yeah. that's a good one. in terms of that was kind of going to go into my next question, how can people set realistic sort of goals for themselves? but it sounds like. >> maybe being specific a little bit more specific about what we want to try and achieve. yes, not overextend ourselves. absolutely. and we can talk about smart goals. a specific, measurable achievable in all these types of things. but one thing that, you know, people kind of get ahead of themselves and they don't recognize that a lot of the goals that people have to be around exercise and eating healthy and we don't realize
9:18 am
sort of the limitations that we have. we're in the dead of winter. it's 40 degrees outside, yeah. and it's dark at 4 o'clock. people say i'm gonna take up running and i'm gonna run a 10 k well, it's different deciding to do that in july versus january. true? so a little more realistic? yeah, absolutely. because one of my new year's resolutions actually this year in the past, it used to be, you know, i want to, you know, go. so you know that may be like, for example, lose 10 pounds in a year, but that instead this kind of that we did a little bit. and i said i'm just going to drink. >> 60 ounces of water a day. yes, which i think is going to help towards building a healthier lifestyle, which can then lead said, you know, other healthy habits. okay. i think exactly what we so, you know, we're already 5 days into the new year. so some people may feel like they've already fallen off track with some of those resolutions. so do you have any advice for folks who might be struggling with kind of beating themselves up over the fact
9:19 am
that they haven't exactly follow through with a plan to do. well, first of all, the message this folks is you're not alone. that's what happens. the majority of people. and that's okay. in clinical psychology, we talk about the difference between a lapse and a relapse. so if i'm trying to drink 60 ounces of water day and i miss it 3 days in a row because i'm, you know, working maybe my kids not sleeping cetera. then that's a i can get back on track and i don't want to beat myself up or feel guilty about it. the problem is when we have a full relapse, which is when we wake up in 6 months have gone by and we don't even know about. that what want to get away but if we stick to the lab, says it and slowly correcting ourselves because it's that slow correction that doesn't have to do with. >> beating ourselves up or guilt or shame. that's what actually keeps us on track in terms of goals. so if somebody will say, for example, who want to go back to the water somebody, you know, i drink 30 ounces instead of the 60. yes,
9:20 am
that's ok, yes, yes, it's that it's that all or nothing thinking where if i if i drink 59 ounces, a failure that's what we want to get away from its this gentle movement, you know, behavioral shaping towards the kind of behavior we want. and how important is it to have a fresh start mentality for the new year and how can people shift away from the idea of perfection when it comes to setting those new year's resolutions. i appreciate that very much. because january first, it's really this very kind of falls deadline. we have that everybody wants to know, turn around and do all of these things. and so thinking more about when it might be >> more change. friendly time in your life. for instance, a lot of parents are home right now. we have kids have been home for weeks. everybody's climbing the walls. everybody's overstimulated. yeah. the tree is still time for a big life change for a lot of us. and that's okay. it's okay to ease into it. yes. okay. and for those who are feeling a sense of anxiety
9:21 am
surrounding the new year in general, of course, so much going on in the world and then we all have things going on in personal lives there to manage what are some just easy practical tips that people can apply right now to help ease day-to-day anxiety and stress. absolutely. so we come back a lot to the idea of mindfulness and when i say mindfulness, that doesn't mean you have to. get into a full lululemon outfit. climb up. mount tam on iraq, meditate for half an hour. that's not that's not what. israel life these but it means focusing on what is in front of you. it means giving 100% of your attention to whatever you're doing in the moment that can be drinking tea. that can be driving in traffic on the bay bridge. you can be, you know, playing with your dog in the morning. but when we zoom out and start to live a little too much in her head, a little too much in the future. that's when anxiety can get the better of the more we slow down and pay attention to this present moment in this present moment, things are probably just fine and us through the value of
9:22 am
practicing mindfulness and living in the moment as well. what does that do in terms of benefits to the brain and just as day-to-day lives as we move forward. absolutely. i'm so glad you asked. we have beautiful data about mindfulness. not only are certain parts of the brain more active and healthy or parts that we want to be more active rather than the fight or flight sort of scary. but reactivity parts of our brain. but we actually have some data that even just 3 to 5 minutes of mindful breathing in the morning can lower your blood pressure throughout the day and make you more resilient toward stress. ok, so really taking the moment to live in the now can actually help us in the future. yes. all right. wonderful doctor, jennifer douglas, thank you so much for joining us with these great insights again this morning. thank you so much. all right. thank you so much. all right. we'll be right back.
