the north bay. the vallejo community is coming together now to raise money for a hit and run crash victim. this accident happened days before christmas destroyed the man's wheelchair. kron four's. lindsey ford has his story. >> the room. and to be honest, i sat there for like 10 minutes per eye. nobody came outside. nobody heard it. >> just 5 days before christmas, the unthinkable happened to melvin jones in valais. whoa around 11, 10 at night right outside of his home. he was struck by a car while positioning himself out of his wheelchair into his suffer from depression. it was like a movie set jones he saw in his rear view mirror bright lights approaching closer and closer cushions. uk pushing injured. quick quick quick, quick quick. and then when the door from you got to those winter bama wheelchair just flew in the air. did a couple

of tumbles land on the ground and it ended up like in the middle of his shattered pieces in shock after the impact, jones as he braced himself by grabbing the steering wheel. and looking ahead at the driver who hit him, seen him put on a light reverse lights. >> know, like what are >> and they took off. everything came down to see if i was all right. >> he's now using a replacement wheelchair. what's left are remains of his main wheelchair, twisted and ruined along with his car's windows. glass shattered in the street. just a lot of trauma that. that i didn't have to go through up. i would have been better. the person with to stop field a little bit better came by. and just checking on me. >> but just not doing that. just left me in a bad place. the hit and run has left jones with a broken foot on top of already had suffered from a tragedy in 2003. >> that left him para plea, jake, from gunshot wounds on

happened. but they do believe that speed could have been a factor in that deadly accident. >> well, time now 603 in the san mateo county sheriff's office is warning people about a scam that targets the hispanic community. deputies say scammers are calling people and offering to register children with the amber alert system. but it's just a way to get confidential information and possibly even meet with residents at their homes. authorities say this is clearly not how the amber alert system works. and if you've been contacted, you want to call the sheriff's office and let him now. police meanwhile, are looking for this woman who's accused of committing bank fraud in pleasanton. they say she went to several banks last month and fraudulently withdrew thousands of dollars from a bank account. thieves meanwhile, targeted and robbed 3 different businesses throughout oakland from saturday night into early sunday morning. no arrests have been made either. and a lot of business owners are blaming teenagers, cove where jeff moment has more.

>> oakland police say this was the first breaking of the night at extra mile store off castro street. get a offers frustrated sunday afternoon to find the stories mostly closed for the day store. employees at extra mile didn't want to interview with kron 4. >> but they did. teenagers messed with the atm machine and it needs to be repaired. i faith that the state for me, always at the oakland you take the good with the bad when it comes oakland. >> open is a beautiful place with a lot of rich history. and i don't think a lot of people take value in the rich history that is open. this woman says the string of burglaries here in oakland is not shocking but just disappointing. i love oakland, treat better. >> oakland police then say a group of thieves target smoke shop off san pablo avenue just before for the morning. >> a rammed into gate. elise of the store manager here says they didn't make out with much, took some fake jordans everything else was left intact. it is very

frustrating. >> we have to we are you have bills with pain. we've got to pay. the rent is around the first of the managers here at the smoke shop tell us they've been broken into several times over the last year. each time they've broken into cost them thousands of dollars. this particular break-in, it's going to cost them around $20,000 to repair. >> makes were right there. and the police not that far and they just let of juggling. lisa says her boss saw oakland police chase the team down the road. >> but then give up kron 4 reached out to opd to confirm this information and open. police told kron 4 that responding officers determined they have no authorization to pursue the suspects like they pretended to do the job or lisa despite the multiple break-ins, they don't plan on closing down just yet. but she has a message for the teens. hopefully your lesson someday. get a job and they can buy some real zonings. >> oakland police say thieves also burglarized a safe way off broadway. the manager on duty at this location says the

door was quickly fixed and thieves didn't end up taking much. this makes 5 burglaries over the last 2 weekends in oakland kron 4 asked opd for comment on the spike in burglaries. but the not hear back reporting in oakland's jack moment. kron 4 news. >> 6, 0, 6, and 3. oakland fire stations are going to be closing their doors because of the budget issues in oakland. you can see on your screen there. the stations affected number. 28 25 are closing station. 10 was previously closed for remodeling in. it's not going to reopen. oakland. firefighters say that closing the stations means that some residents may have to wait 10 minutes for response. firefighters are hold a news conference outside city hall before the first city council meeting of the new year. >> in 2024, was a busy year for the oakland fire department as a whole. >> they responded to 79,000. >> apparatus incidents, the busiest engine went to more

arrested 2 people for stealing about $1200 worth of ribeye and prime rib beef cuts. they tracked down the thieves. thanks to an employee who saw the license plate on the getaway car and then they found all the stolen meek. women's sports are going to be front and center as we told you about this new bar in san francisco that is opening in the castro in the spring. it's called ricky's. san francisco native ali wong, one best stand-up comedian on television for netflix special ali wong, single lady. her golden globes, acceptance speech. in that she thanks san francisco routes because that's where she's from. and san francisco punchline, comedy club as well. and she thanked the comedy club as well, saying that, you know, that's where she got her start and turn. >> well, in more bay area news, those headed to the coast are urged to watch out for sneaker waves. they can sweep across beaches without warning and pull people back

opposite. we're falling behind as far as rainfall goes down south this week, we are all in the same boat with dry skies, a high pressure ridge in place and even a bit of an offshore breeze. this is going to ensure those dry conditions remain not just this week, but well into the weekend and even early next week, the north coast hardly seeing a single drop of water in our forecast. and your extended outlook is showing that drier than average weather continuing all across the bay area. now, as far as temperatures go today, most of us are going to be hanging out right around that 60 degree mark. and that's going to land us in the upper 50's to low 60's san bruno right at 58 degrees today will be at 58 in san carlos in redwood city, 60 for your highs and santa clara and san jose. same upper 50's to low 60's across the east bay this afternoon, hayward and oakland right at cusp of the 60 degree mark. while napa getting up to 61 among are more mild spots today. just by a degree or 2. looking ahead, tomorrow's

are hoping to get some information that leads to them. well, the chp is now searching for the driver connected with a deadly hit and run in santa rosa. it happened saturday night on highway 101ight near steele lane. >> police say a pestrian was found lying in the road but apparently been hit by a car that victim unfortunately died at the scene. in the north bay elsewhere. we've got police in santa rosa now arresting a man for allegedly pointing a gun at another driver during a road rage incident. 22 year-old calvin crump is the suspect in this case, officers responded to west 3rd street in amador drive right around 5 o'clock saturday evening. the suspect was later found near stoney point road and guerneville road with crops one month child and the child's mother in the car. officers also found a loaded gun and ammunition in the truck. the mother and the child were released. crump, though, was booked into the sonoma county jail. >> and with that, millions of

people are going to get bigger social security checks that bill signed by president biden just yesterday. the social security fairness act. and that will affect current and former public employees who get pensions from working as teachers, firefighters, police officers and other public service jobs. about 3 million people are affected by this during sunday's white house ceremony, the president singled out a texas teenager who walked 1600 miles from texas to washington, d.c., and support of that bill. >> a retired teacher struggle survive without the social security benefits year. he's on one right. >> that bipartisan bill counter x 2 provisions that would have limited the benefits for people's retirement paychecks. 6.19, right now in the white house is banning cert certain natural gas. water heaters and replacing them with new tank.

>> 6.29 right now and we're checking out the weather trying to get out of the fog holland. it's going to last, but it's pretty thick. it is out there. john, good morning. good morning. it is up thick, especially on our bridges and that is causing some visibility issues out there for sure. a lot of us driving across both the bay, the golden gate and up to the richmond. sandra releasing a big dose of it. let's look outside at the golden gate right here. and you can see it's really packed right in this view from suture tower right now, dense fog advisories are in effect for the north bay, but even for other areas do be watching out for some of those lower visibility spots. that's going to take a while for it to burn off today. but once we get to the afternoon, we are going to be seeing a nice dose of sunshine overhead. currently temperatures are in the 30's to 40's. absolutely layer up oakland sitting at 47 right now. san francisco just shy of 50 degrees later on today. it'll be upper 50's to low 60's. and once that fog burns off a solid dose of sun right

on saturday. just just a home place, comfort place for me. >> the santa cruz wharf is a staple in the community, a place to laugh fish meet with friends and to relax. is happy that this can all continue into the new year were smaller restaurant. i just feel like all of our guests like a piece of family. so for the last 10 days. >> we have been seeing members of our family. and so it just feels absolutely wonderful to be here. the open brightening their day in santa cruz. lindsey ford kron. 4 news. >> it's 6.33, in oakland. police sergeant is on administrative leave after shooting a man during a foot chase that happened saturday morning. the officers saw someone firing a rifle near a cousin boulevard around 5 in the morning. he ran after the suspect and ended up shooting him. the man then barricaded himself in a nearby home. he did, however, eventually surrender. and now there's an investigation into what happened. the chp arrest an

oakland man for killing his wife in february of 2023. that's when police responded to the home or start to the location of the shooting, which is the edwards avenue off-ramp on 5.80, in oakland. that is where they found the woman like have thought mccowan dead. she had been shot and the chp identified her husband as the prime suspect. his name is nate and nathaniel mccowan. and after 2 years of investigating the alameda county da has now filed charges against him. >> well, another bay area police department now considering using drones. santa rosa police are considering drones that would be used as part of a first responder program to help fight crime and help out with natural disasters to the drones have cameras and thermal sensors that could get access to flooded areas or collapsed buildings before first responders arrive. police say this would be less expensive than using a helicopter or other vehicle

and there's going to be a community meeting to talk more about these drones that will be on january 22nd out of the utility fields, operations area on stony point road. well, cupertino police have arrested 2 people now accused of stealing all this meat that you see here from a safeway store last week, roughly $1200 worth of rain by other prime beef cuts were stolen. police say they tracked down the suspects. thanks to an employee who saw the license plate of the getaway car. time now 6.35. and governor newsom is continuing to crack down on ultra processed food. yeah. so he was very has directed the state health department to investigate things like dies. >> in flaming hot cheetos, skittles. so to things like that news nation's nancy loo takes a closer look. >> it's the focus of a movie. it's even turned into ice cream. but now flaming hot cheetos are being roasted by the food police and along with those unnaturally red snacks.

other ultra-processed foods are also targeted all kinds of soft drinks. and candy skittles, twinkies, mountain dew and much more governor newsom's new order calls for proposals to further limit intake and access to ultra processed foods. last year the state moved to ban sales at schlols citing that particular dyes are linked to hyperactivity and behavior let's go clean. food fan and health secretary nominee rfk junior could add muscle to an american diet. cleanup as part of the incoming trump administration to re toes cheeses happen. cronje gummy everyone knows that the so maybe you wouldn't be too surprised see that. the ingredients include a lot of places. also in the fight, former presidential candidate marianne williamson now running to lead the dnc. she sounded off on big food during appearance on news nation prime all of the ingredients that we allow that we know are

carcinogenic in the united states that they do not allow in european countries. they do not allow in canada. why do we allow them here? we allow them here because certain big food companies have learned that these ingredients will increase the shelf life. the california push includes calls for ingredient changes, something on par with the cleaner european cheetos. they have hot cheetos in europe. >> and they make them without the food dyes and actually says on the packaging they brag about the fact that it is made without artificial colors. >> more food news and good news for commercial crab harvesters. crab season is finally open. only in certain areas, starting from the sonoma mendocino county line to the u.s. mexico border. there's going to be a trap production because they want to reduce the entanglement risk for humpback whales. >> well, rental listing scams are becoming more elaborate now. and local authorities in santa clara county are warning the community to be careful.

that is right here in the midst of drier conditions. you head south of the bay, though, and it has actually been a dry season up to this point. they could use some more rain down towards la while this break is certainly appreciated for us. as for temperatures today is 50's to low 60's. most of us are going to be hanging on to those 50's this afternoon. it is going to be slow clearing as far as the several more hours actually before we start to see fog lifting in burning off. and that will suppress temperatures a little bit. there's those low 60's in the south bay while upper 50's for most of the east bay heyward and castro valley barely getting up to 60 degrees. same for spots like napa yacht bill and fairfield. a look ahead is actually showing temperatures on gradual warming trend this week. that'll get us into the mid 60's by the tail end of your workweek. lots of sunshine. i'll be at some morning fog and times of hasan the mix too.
