you for joining us here on kron for news at noon. i'm justine waldman. >> we begin with a story out of the east bay where oakland firefighters are speaking out against the temporary closure. a fire stations kron 4 charles clifford is live for us now in oakland with details. charles, which stations are closing? >> well, there are 2 stations, including station 25, which is right behind me here that are being closed down. and today a firefighters are expressing their frustration saying that these closures endanger public safety. monday morning, oakland firefighters gathered on the steps of city hall to demand that the city reopened. the recently closed fire stations show that the city's budget prioritizes the lives of citizens of this great city. oakland is facing a budget deficit of around 129 million dollars. the city was counting on the sale of the oakland coliseum site to fill that budget gap. >> but the deal has yet to go through as a result. the city is making significant cuts to services the police department

and fire department are by far oakland's largest expenses and in an effort to save money, fire stations. 25 28 will be temporarily closed station 10, which is already shut down, fire department worries that the closures, but the people who live near those stations at risk. >> you will not have a fire engine doorstep in 4 minutes like you would have just yesterday. you will not quickly have firefighter paramedics to help you or your family and what could have been a small blaze. for a small fire near your house will become a conflagration leaving tragedy its wake. >> the firefighters are also calling on the city and alameda county to quickly complete the sale of the coliseum site and restore services. >> and the moment the ink dries on the coliseum sale team immediately stop these dangerous and reckless closures that threaten all of oakland fire stations. 25 28 were chosen to be temporarily closed. >> because they tend to be less busy during the winter and spring months station. 21 about 4 miles away will handle

the bulk of their calls for service. 25 28 could reopen later this year. but if oakland is still facing budget problems, the city has said that other stations may need to be closed. all right, back live now, the firefighters who work at station. twenty-five and 28 have been temporarily reassigned. but for now in oakland, charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> thank you. happening today, the oakland animal shelters. few hours go into effect. that is the latest agency also impacted by oakland's budget deficit. the shelter posting on facebook that in october key positions within the shelter had to be frozen due to the city's ongoing financial crisis impacting front counter and animal intake staff. so as a result of the under staffing, the shelter will be closed to the public on tuesdays and wednesdays. you can see some of the new hours here on the screen. you could also find them on the shelter's website.

thieves targeted and robbed 3 different businesses throughout oakland from saturday night until early sunday morning. no arrests have been made but many business owners are blaming teenagers. kron 4 shock moment has the story. >> in san francisco it's cleanup day from big to small and almost 4 we are. was that one max davis hands around this neighborhood decided to help clean up when he heard mayor elected annual larry. >> would be hosting a local cleanup that's been causing about here. yeah, i was a i was a supporter and it's nice to see a face to the name. he is a san francisco resident and is looking forward to what this new administration will bring a little more safe to be able to walk around downtown downtown to be nice if it was more of a city, again, a walkable city and the mayor elect himself just days away from inauguration is picking up piece by piece and grieving neighbors who also supported

people off the street and into the help that they working with the sheriff's department and the police department. we are going to make sure >> that the entry points to our city beacons of hope. one of the mayor-elect schools is to crack down on drug use and homelessness supervisor matt dorsey recently penned a letter to law enforcement agencies asking them if they have the capacity to arrest up to 100 people every night in the 6th street and tenderloin area. the letter also suggests forcing people into detox mayor-elect. >> happening right now, people head to the coast are being asked to watch out for sneaker waves which can sweep across the beach without warning and then pull people into the water. kron four's will tran is that half moon bay with more? >> the warning will last until 04:00pm tomorrow. that's how

long. >> this is going to be a situation as sneaker waves are getting closer and closer. higher and higher along the beach. this is miramar beach in half moon bay, a beautiful day, but it can turn deadly if you're not careful because sneaker waves are known to come out of nowhere, hence the word sneaker and even take bolder is back into the ocean. much less you if you have a fur-baby, make sure your fur baby is on a leash because sometimes i speak or waive or even a normal wave can come along and grab your for a baby. and of course, you being a loving parent will rush into the water and it can be very tragic. so make sure your dog is on a leash. and then if you possibly can go higher and higher up the beach, you can see how high the waves are right now. what will make this even possibly worse is the fog. we've seen foggy conditions, which, of course, will cut down on visibility.

so you got to be careful about that as well. keep in mind, it looks beautiful, but it could be dangerous, especially if you're back is to the water. so never have you back against the water. you can come here, try to stay away from the water much as you possibly can and enjoy the sights. but by all means to all that you can to avoid those sneaker waves, which of course it's going to last at least for another day. it's typical beach. we're currently under this beach hazard statement right now because of the waves are going to check in now with meteorologist koger obama. details. hi there. yeah, obviously looks nice and calm but this is just to talk about what kind of coming our way. so this beach hazard statement is from now until 04:00pm on tuesday. so obviously heard will talking about it. >> high risk of sneaker waves. that is probably the biggest concern we could see dangerous

surf. the waves breaking up to 20 feet. so you really can't say it enough to never turn your back on the ocean. so here is this west-northwest. well, you can see it there in the brighter colors that's moving towards us at the moment. wave hearts heights aren't that high. as you can see, we're about 7 feet right here off the coast of point rays. having said that, they are going to be increasing. so just want to think about your choices here. and frankly, if you can avoid the coast of possible throughout today and into tuesday until the afternoon, that's probably your best bet. definitely want to stay off those coastal jedi's, though. and you know, as again, well, as mentioned, keep your eyes on kids and pets. frankly, i wouldn't have them around the coast while this is happening and it's going to say it again. never turn your back on the ocean. meanwhile, we have been dealing with fog this morning. you're taking a live look from mount tam here. you can see some of that fog just hanging out and it is still hanging out in the north bay where they've extended that dense fog advisory until 2 o'clock now. so usually you see the start to expire earlier in the morning around 10:00am they extended it until 12:00pm and now it is extended until

experiencing 183 delays. 10 cancellations. san jose mineta. 25 delays 10 cancellations and the oakland airport. 21 delays and 2 cancellations. the cemetery county sheriff's office warning people about a scam that's targeting the hispanic community. deputies say scammers are calling people and offering to register their children through the amber alert system. but this is just a way for the scammers to get confidential information and even then meet the residents at their homes. authorities are saying this is clearly not how the amber alert system works and saying now, if you've been contacted to do this, you should call the sheriff's office. still ahead here at noon today, the commercial crab season. >> so far and 4 years after the capitol insurrection. we'll see how dc police prepare to certify the election. days before taking office. mayor left out of san francisco, daniel lurie, dedicating the weekend

traffic severely restricted for the first time ever. today's certification has been given the status of a national security special event by the secret service. something usually reserved for events like super bowls are presidential inaugurations. president biden wants to expand a ban on offshore oil and gas drilling. the president says he's using his authority under the outer continental shelf lands, act to protect offshore areas on both the east and west coast. this action, what also cover a portion of the gulf of mexico as well as alaska's northern bering sea. it would also be difficult for the president elect trump to reverse this because it would then likely require an act of congress. trump has says had has said that he wants to expand offshore drilling. >> and intent to resign as party leader as prime

minister. this country deserves a real choice in the next elections. >> canadian prime minister justin trudeau has resigned as a liberal party leader. he will stay on as prime minister until a new leader of the liberal party is chosen. he has faced pressure from his own party to quit over the past couple of months. following successive. successive election losses and the resignation of some key ministers. the canadian parliament will be suspended until march, which will allow time for a liberal party leadership race. looking outside right now here in a lot of fog across the golden gate bridge. let's check in cuyler now in the weather center to see what's happening. a lot of fog here still in sanford. yeah, there is. so the dense fog advisory is still up for the north bay. till 2 o'clock everywhere else. it has expired, even though as you can see in san francisco, we are still certainly >> socked in with the fog temperatures kind of reflecting where that fog is really hanging on. it is not hanging on in the spotlight.

san jose. we're at 62 degrees. >> it is definitely still up in santa or as it were just at 50 degrees. obviously, half moon bay getting some sunshine right now sitting at about 57. so the next issue that we have after fog is the wind right now. you can see the current wind not bad. we've got a little bit of a northerly flow to half moon bay about 13 miles per hour. but we're going to be starting to get into position of what's called an inside slider many low pressure that's going to slide to the inside of california makes this wind gradient. now, we usually talk about this during fire season because it increases fire danger because it produces offshore wind when those 2 come together with the clockwise and counter clockwise circulation that is setting up right now. thankfully because we don't have dry fields out there. we're not in the position that southern california is in, which is that they are going under a red-flag warning starting tomorrow through thursday. we are just going to be dealing with a wind advisory meeting that we're going to see gusts that could get up to about 50 miles per hour 20 to 30 mile per hour wind. you can see it's interior portions of our east bay and our north bay. that means we could have a few power outages, tree limbs down. so this goes into effect

tonight at 07:00pm and goes through wednesday at 10:00am just kind of show you how these wind gust start to pick up. this is tonight around 10, 30 start to see it rolling up in the north bay and then it becomes far more pervasive on our tuesday morning. so very gusty wind. you can see that offshore direction and it continues right through the day on tuesday gets really gusty. and then finally, as we get into our wednesday as we start work our way towards the afternoon, that's when things kind of let meanwhile, speaking of letting up, this is a live look from mount tam where you could see a little while ago. those blue skies are up there. but right now still socked in with that fog. now, the nice thing is temperatures over the next 5 days. once we kick the fog, we're going to get really nice inland spots getting up into the upper 60's potentially as we get into wednesday and thursday. we'll talk more about that later in the broadcast. >> thank you. governor newsom continues to try and crack down processed foods. he has directed state health officials to investigate things like dies that are in flaming hot cheetos, twinkies,

always on kron 4 dot com just e and theresa who are some of the top contenders, other names that are being thrown into the ring here? well, one person heard time and time again is lauren taylor. he went up against sheng thao and said that he wanted the job than any wants a job. now is a very close margin that he lost a shunt. how he said that he is certainly out there and he certainly wants that job. so some other people out there as well. so a lot that we will be continuing to cover just a i've heard is also former congresswoman barbara lee. her name has been thrown out there as well, too. so. >> a lot to go over theresa, thank you. another bay area police department is considering using drones. santa rosa police are considering drones that would be used as part of a first responder program to help fight crime and aid in natural disasters. the drones have cameras and thermal sensors that can get access to flooded areas or collapsed buildings before first responders can

arrive. police say this would be less expensive than using a helicopter or any other type of vehicle. there will be a community meeting to discuss the drones, january 22nd at the utility's field operations on stony point road. in the north bay. the vallejo community is coming together to raise money for a hit and run crash victim. this accident happened just a couple of days before christmas and it destroyed the man's wheelchair. kron four's. lindsey ford has the story. >> the room. and to be honest, i sat there for like 10 minutes per eye. nobody came outside. nobody heard it. >> just 5 days before christmas, the unthinkable happened to melvin jones and delay. whoa around 11, 10 at night right outside of his home. he was struck by a car while positioning himself out of his wheelchair into his

vehicle. steven mccraw sometimes suffer from depression. it was like a movie set jones he saw in his rear view mirror bright lights approaching closer and closer pushing keep pushing. are going. >> quick quick, quick, quick and they wanted or flawed got to winter wheelchair does flew in the air. did a couple of tumbles land on the ground and it ended up like in the middle of his shattered to pieces in shock after the impact, jones as he braced himself by grabbing the steering wheel. >> and looking ahead at the driver who hit him, seen him put on a light reverse lights. >> you know, like what are >> and they took off. never even came down to see if i was all right. >> he's now using a replacement wheelchair. what's left are remains of his main wheelchair, twisted and ruined along with his car's windows. glass shattered in the street. just a lot of trauma that. that i didn't have to go

through up. i would have been better. the person just stop. i would have felt a little bit better. came been just checking on me. >> but just not doing that. just left me in a bad place. the hit and run has left jones with a broken foot on top of already had suffered from a tragedy in 2003. >> that left him para plea, jake, from gunshot wounds on titan heard already hurt. so i got to keep getting hurt. >> what has helped melvin look to a brighter new year is his children in the community engagement. he's involved in like being the commissioner of the boys and girls club empowerment doing those things and meeting with the community see the community happy. gives me thanks and praise is and it is why my depression is no longer no longer there. >> jones is also grateful for the gofundme that has been made on his behalf to help pay for medical expenses. the feedback that i'm getting from the community, people that i don't even know like is. >> overwhelmingly appreciative it life was my heart. in

vallejo, lindsey ford kron. 4 news. >> a national wpather service is warning parts of the east coast could see some really heavy snowfall the most in decades today, 7 states from new jersey to kansas are declaring states of emergency was 60 million americans in the storm's path. tom dempsey has the latest. >> parts of the east coast could see their heaviest snowfall in decades today and it's led to a 7 different states calling states of emergency states like new jersey and kansas doing so with of around 60 million americans living in the path of this storm. but this winter weather has really caused the mess in the midwest, in particular with snow and ice making road conditions almost treacherous at times, bringing lots of different crashes, missouri. emergency crews say at least 600 drivers were stranded over the weekend. and in kentucky, a state trooper was hurt after his patrol car was state leaders urging folks

to stay off the roads today. millions across the midwest are shoveling themselves out from record setting snowfall this morning storm heads east, kansas city, soft foot of snow in 24 hours with city leaders saying that's the most they've seen there in over 30 years. louisville, kentucky shattering 115 year-old record with their nearly 8 inches of snow over the weekend in areas like philadelphia to richmond, virginia are expected to be hit the worst today with some of the areas getting foot of snow. >> and the storm is also bringing heavy winds and freezing cold temperatures. wind gusts up to 45 miles an hour were recorded across the midwest over the weekend in the east coast is expected to feel temperatures up to 25 degrees below normal. the national weather service warning the northeast will feel that bitter cold for several days after this storm. but it is sure pretty to be out here on the national mall. the continuing to fall here we see people exercising some people we saw one gentleman

all of our guests like a piece of family. so for the last 10 days. >> we have been seeing members of our family. and so it just feels absolutely wonderful to be here. the open brightening their day in santa cruz. lindsey ford kron. 4 news. >> i will take a look now here at the santa cruz wharf. hey, we're getting some blue skies and that shots. that's a good sign of what's to come. meteorologist kyla grogan here with details on what's going hey, there into those of you dealing with the fog. i want to say that, yes, there is some sunshine out there and you can see it here in san jose. we're seeing some of that sun break through. >> temperatures there kind of reflecting that. we're a little bit warmer. san jose right now at 62 degrees where as you can see as you head to concord about 51 degrees and head up to the north bay, we're finally starting to get a little bit of a lift there. temperatures. but santa rosa still just at 50 san francisco at 52. so we have this west-northwest swell that's coming in. and unfortunately, that is kicking up some coastal danger. so the weather service has put out with a colleague beach hazard statement to let you know that there is exceptionally dangerous surf. we could see

waves breaking up to about 20 feet. sneaker waves. i think that's probably the biggest threat with this. one of those are the waves, the kind of come up out of nowhere and can sweep you off your feet into very cold water. so the advice is never turn your back on the ocean. and then i think the advice is avoid the coast, if you can write. so this is through tuesday at 04:00pm. so between today and tuesday afternoon, if you can avoid the coast, that would be a good, good move on your part. here's a look at stormtracker. you can see we do still have some of the high clouds that are rolling in in addition to some of the fog that's been out there. so that's made things a little bit difficult today with the kicking the clouds. we do have very light wind right now. half moon bay up to about 12 miles per hour. that is going to change as we get into tonight as we and a lot of californians going to be under what's called high wind advisory tonight. having said that, we are little better off in southern california. they have not gotten the rain that we've gotten. so they're fuels are very dry. so they are going to be under a red-flag warning starting tomorrow because of that offshore wind that's going to roll for us. it is the wind advisory that does increase fire danger. but you can see where it is here. it is a good portion of north
