thanks for joining us on kron. 4 news at 5. i'm vicki liviakis. i'm grant lotus. our top story tonight. the city of oakland. >> has its 3rd mayor in less than a month. councilmember kevin jenkins was selected by u.s. fellow council members this afternoon. but as kron four's, dan kerman tells us the spotlight today is once again on former congresswoman barbara lee. and the question remains, will she or won't she run for mayor? former oakland congresswoman barbara lee will announce later this week if she'll run for oakland. mayor an april special election. >> but on monday, lee registered ali for oakland, mayor 2025 campaign finance committee with the secretary of state's office. barbour lead would be in serene, the world's most difficult job at the most difficult time. >> media and political strategist justin berton served communications director for former oakland mayor libby shaft. >> she's obviously the odds on favorite to win the seat of mayor for oakland.

>> burton says lee's popularity during a quarter century in congress is clearly to her advantage. but he says former congressman ron de limbs term as mayor was not successful and that could prove problematic for barbara prove problematic for barbara lee does decide to run going to have to run against the ghost of ron develops. >> if lauren taylor runs, he can say, hey, i'm not somebody coming in from washington, d.c., who's barely been in the district to 78 years old, who's at the end of their career and just wants to provide a little bit of hope to people. lauren taylor could run against that effectively and make it a real fight. for now, oakland's interim mayor is kevin jenkins monday. the oakland city council selected him as council president. and as such, you will serve as interim mayor until a special election is held on april. 15th. >> we want to get back to a place where we're doing our basic services. well, where we're giving our unsheltered

folks housed. fill in potholes where our fire stations are open. i'm sure that we will work together, get this figured out and make sure that we get the budget figured out and make sure that we provide a smooth transition for the next mayor. jenkins is oakland's 3rd mayor in less than a month. >> he takes the reins from nikki fortunato bas who was just elected to the alameda county board of supervisors basabe in interim mayor since december 17th following the recall of mayor sheng thao. dan kerman kron. 4 news. there were other major changes at today's oakland city council meeting 3 new city council members were sworn in. >> and former council member rebecca kaplan was appointed to fill the seat of nikki fortunato the seat on the alameda county board of supervisors to 3 new members of the council spoke about their goals moving forward. >> this is an all-hands-on-deck moment for oakland. then we rise and fall on the strength of our ability to work together. and i know that we have some really tough

times ahead. >> both locally and at the national level. and yet my heart is overjoyed for the opportunity to work alongside all of you really help up with oakland and create in oakland. that serves as a positive vision for other cities. and i know that we can do this together. thank you. >> special election to fill the seat left open by nikki fortunato. bas will be held at the same time as the special mayoral election. april 15th, meantime, oakland firefighters are speaking out against the temporary closure of fire station. actually, 2 of them as of today to oakland, fire stations are closed this morning, oakland firefighters gathered on the steps of city hall to demand that the city reopened. the recently closed stations. oakland is facing a budget deficit of about 129 million dollars. the city was counting on the sale of the open coliseum site to fill that budget gap. but the deal has yet to go through as a result. the city is making significant cuts to services

the police department and fire department are by far oakland's largest expenses and in an effort to save money, fire stations. 25 28 will be temporarily closed. the fire department worries that the closures put the people who live near those stations at risk. >> you will not have a fire engine your doorstep in 4 minutes like you would have just yesterday. you will not quickly have firefighter paramedics to help you or your family and what could have been a small blaze. for a small fire near your house will become a conflagration leaving tragedy its wake. >> the firefighters are also calling on the city and alameda county to quickly complete the sale of the coliseum site and restore services on the peninsula complaint against the county of san mateo was filed by sheriff christina corpus last month. we were supposed to hear from the sheriff today about the complaint, but that press conference was canceled. kron four's rob nesbitt reports now on the latest

controversy surrounding the san mateo county sheriff's office. sheriff christina corpus was scheduled to speak today at one 30 pm, but that press conference was canceled. her lawyer says that's because new information was discovered over the weekend. that needs to be combed through on friday. kron 4 received a copy of the 5 page claim filed against san mateo county. >> claiming sheriff christina corpus is a victim of discrimination, harassment and defamation calls for the sheriff's resignation started after 400 page report was released by the county's independent investigator. corpus was accused of racism, retaliation, homophobia, abuse of power and having a romantic relationship with the assistant sheriff, her lawyer bradgate says the incomplete investigation was missing key evidence and done for legal reasons by releasing the report. initially they violated the rights sheriff corpus because as a peace officer. >> she is protected under what's known as a peace officers. bill of rights. includes confidentiality. so

when they disclose some of this information, they broke the law. the claim against the county was filed on december 3rd for the amount of 10 million dollars we were supposed to hear from the sheriff in her own words monday about the details of the claim. but the press conference was canceled. sheriff was unavailable because of developments going on. and this is something that's rapidly evolving. so there's some new information that we received that we want to check out so that we can accurately. >> reported to the media, san mateo county attorney john neville and says the claim against the county is without merit and that if a lawsuit is filed in the future, the county will address the baseless allegations in court. >> legal analyst steven clark says this is the first time in months the sheriff has been on the offense. what sheriff corpus is saying is that i've been unfairly targeted here. i've been unfairly branded a racist among other things. >> and what she's now saying is that she is the victim and she is the one that should be making the claim against the county. the san mateo county

board of supervisors has placed an amendment on the march ballot asking voters to grant them the power to remove sheriff corpus from office. >> reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> we're going to hunt a hospital in san francisco had to be evacuated because of a gas leak this morning, san francisco health officials say a contractor working on the campus damaged a gas line. staff in the administration building were evacuated for about an hour as crews work to cap the leak. the hospital building was not affected in no residents or patients had to be evacuated. staff were able to go back shortly thereafter police in antioch are investigating a deadly shooting. officers say just after 10, 15 this morning they were called to rockford drive where they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. he was taken to the hospital where he died. police are still investigating what led to this. the victim's identity has not been released. on the peninsula. this is what was left of a car that hit a tree and then split in half killing a person.

>> it happened just after one 30 this morning on highway one being hollow road in pescadero. chp says that the car when to leftover double lines back to the right and then crashed into a tree. officers say the person who died was the only one inside the car. chp now looking into what caused the crash in the first place. >> take a look. bay area drivers had a very foggy start to the day. this is the bay bridge. usually you can see the city of san francisco this time of year and the bay. but those were not visible today. couldn't even see some of the signage on the bridge until you were very close to it. and time of the coast, there's a beach hazard advisory in effect until tomorrow afternoon due to the >> dangerous swimming in surf. conditions out there. officials say you could see strong rip currents and breaking waves as high as 20 feet. they also say there's a high chance for sneaker waves, which come farther on the beach than expected. a

reminder to never turn your back to the ocean and always keep your pet on a leash. when nearby. with that, we want to send things over to chief meteorologist lawrence karnow for a check on the forecast a yeah, guys a very dangerous out there along the way just hounding this winter season so far. >> and more to come. still, we've got some large storms, the middle of the civic that continue to generate. >> those big time waves out there right now, you're looking toward half moon bay. the fog has moved in pretty thick fog even along the coastline today. some of that ground fog developing around the bay area making for some dense fog early on. and of course, those big-time waves. so we are watching for more a strong rip currents along the coastline, especially on those west northwest facing beaches. expect some of those larger waves may's 18, maybe 20 footers moving in along the coastline. so watch out for that. the meantime, though, big pattern shift just beginning to develop. now we're going to be talking about some very gusty winds out to be the big weather story going forward here. and the fact that remain very, very dry right now. you see some clouds moving in

overhead, some mid to high level clouds up above. we still are seeing some patchy, dense fog down below. but those winds are going to start to ramp up not only here, but all around the state. we're going to watch. those winds really started to kick in overnight tonight and tomorrow we're going to are gusty period. starting late tonight and tomorrow to have more on that coming up a few minutes. thanks. lourdes new at 5, a bay area mexican restaurant chain has shut down after being fined by the feds. >> for allowing young people to work outside of business hours and allowing them to operate dangerous equipment. see casa had restaurants in emeryville, napa and san ramon. all of them are now closed. this is the message you see when you go to the website, the u.s. department of labor find the chain more than 45,000 bucks. officials say they allowed employees as young as 14 to work outside of permitted hours during school days. they also say the chain didn't give an employee the proper space to pump milk during the work day. the restaurant was fined more than

grieving after a father was shot and killed early in the morning. new year's eve. the guy was just trying to go to work. >> another homicide in the city of oakland has the numbers don't even begin to tell the whole story. >> whaley bernstein was husband and a father of 2 young children. he went to work in west oakland early tuesday morning, but instead became the latest victim of gun violence. i spoke with his mother, leah, who just can't understand why anyone would want to kill the hardworking young family man. >> problem them. who father, legacy newly the little hole in their hearts. thinker. don't that's a choice. it's a choice.

>> oakland police are investigating and so far have not named any suspects. the family has started a gofundme page and it's on our website at kron 4 dot com. now at 5, a couple's been arrested after police say they would drive from central california to the bay to sell drugs. here's what officers >> say they found when they served search warrants. police say the un. and covered more than a dozen illegal guns as well as drugs like cocaine, oxycodone and marijuana, thousands of dollars and designer brands. gold diamond saw officers say 37 year-old justin dixon would routinely drive from stockton to san jose and san francisco to sell drugs and his girlfriend. 26 year-old jade length a sacked would buy the guns for. they were both booked into jail on several charges. vice president kamala harris presided over a joint session of congress today where lawmakers voted to certify

donald trump's election win process that was in stark contrast to the one on january 6th 4 years ago. >> catherine heenan is in the newsroom now with more on that story. catherine? yeah, today's basic ritual of democracy generally does not get a lot of attention. it does not always fill the seats, but today it did. >> it's a very important day. was about what should be the norm. >> it probably was not an easy day for vice president harris the victory of the man who beat her in a contentious presidential race. despite a snowstorm in washington, senators and representatives filled the house floor, including senator jd vance, donald trump's vice president elect. >> the whole number of the electors appointed to vote. the president of the united states is 538. harris stoically presided over the certification of her own loss.

republicans applauded after the counting of each state. trump won. >> democrats rose to applaud harris when her total electoral votes were counted. it was all over in roughly an hour. but many lawm%kers were looking back to 4 years ago when rioters stormed the capitol during the same process. senate majority leader chuck schumer declaring democrats would not repeat history on this january 6. >> our side will not engage in election denialism. >> president elect trump is considering pardons for those who breached the capitol for years ago. they've been political prisoners. they have been political hostages and i can't wait to see their pardons. this is what it looks like when you are patriotic % and believe in democracy, you certify the election without political violence. meantime, amid today's calm scene reminders of how things have changed since 4 years ago, the

capitol was on heavy locked on with black metal fencing around the building and for the first time homeland security had designated the day as a national special security event. >> president biden has been talking a lot about making sure there is a peaceful transition of power. last night, though he did warn americans not to forget the violent attack on the capitol. vicki and grant. >> thank you, catherine. and taking a live look now from atlanta, georgia, tonight where people have been filing in all day long to pay their respects to the former president, jimmy carter. this is at the carter center tomorrow. his casket will be flown to washington, d.c., where he'll lie in state at the capitol until his funeral on thursday. the former president will then be laid to rest next to his wife, the late rosalynn carter. president carter died last week at the age of 100.

>> and intent to resign as party leader as prime minister. this country deserves a real choice in the next elections. >> after nearly a decade in power, canadian prime minister justin trudeau is stepping down as that country's leader. he's faced pressure from his own party to quit over the past few months. following successive election losses and the resignation of key ministers. he'll stay on as prime minister until a new leader of the liberal party is chosen. the canadian parliament will be suspended until march, which should allow time for the liberal party leadership race to play out. all right. let's talk weather back here in the bays. we take a live look. beautiful view there from the top of mount tam, all kinds of cool colors hovering above the 5. it looks kind of like a pass still painting. lawrence? yeah. looks cold to that was really out there. you get caught the ball hard, right? boy, it's been cold in parts of the bay area, but >> beautiful around the bay area gets a now. we're going to watch a fog begin to mix out tonight. the winds are really going to become a factor here in the coming

days. and i think not only just the next few days, but maybe over the next week and a half, maybe 2 weeks as we're seeing an unusually long, dry period in the middle of january. we're gonna see bouts of these winds kicking in up there right now. boy, it is foggy out there looking toward the golden gate bridge. you can just see one tower kind of peeking through some of the traffic making his way across the golden gate bridge right now. but plenty of fog keeping temperatures cool. but yeah, numbers looking like this. 54 degrees in san francisco. 56 in oakland. 58 degrees in san jose. 56 in livermore, concord. and when you get that damp fog around the bay area to get that moisture on your skin. boy, it gets chilly outside up there. right now we're staying mostly dry. a couple leftover lingering showers in the high sierra nevada. otherwise a few clouds here in the bay area. but so far, so good winds, not all that strong just yet. we're going to see offshore wind really kicking in overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. and then they're really gonna get a little rough. so we've got high wind advisory going up across a good part of the bay area specially over the mountain tops going see some gusty winds. all those areas shaded

in brown, the oakland hills, east bay, the diablo range expecting gusty winds there as well. and you see that here. here's the forecast model overnight tonight. you'll watch winds kind of wrapping up, especially after midnight boy in about 3, 4 o'clock in the morning. 6 o'clock in the morning or very gusty winds, 40 plus mile an hour winds across some of the mountain tops there. that is going to continue throughout the day on and off tomorrow. so plan on being a blustery day, especially over the mountain tops down below. you're gonna see some gusty winds. i think even in some of the urban areas. but since we're not getting the rain, we're getting these systems kind of rolling over the top and moving over the great basin. what they do is they generate a lot of wind here the bay area more that the comp. all right. well, yeah. >> enjoy the warmth while we have it. yeah. thankful for the rain that we had right hope for more rain in a couple weeks other parts of the country are wishing they could have our weather. no kidding. all right. thank you >> still ahead, a north bay city now looking into using drones for emergency situations like wildfires. we'll tell you where after the break. richmond police are

urging people to be extra careful after seeing an uptick in robberies around that city. >> officers say that there have been more than 30 since december. 1st, police say that when you're out and about stay aware, avoid distractions. trust your gut. keep those valuables out of sight and traveling groups whenever possible. they also say if you see something suspicious, report it to police on the peninsula. san mateo county deputies, they are warning people about an amber alert scam that's targeting the hispanic community. they say that scammers are calling people and offering to

register children through the that they would then ask for your personal information and have reps me chew at their home. authorities say this is not how amber alert work and that only they can activate it. no registration is necessary. so if a scammer reaches out to your big asked to call the sheriff's office santa rosa police now looking into using drones to help fight crime and 8 in natural disasters. it would be a part of the department's first responder program. the drones have camera in thermal sensors that can get to flooded areas are collapsed. buildings before first responders even get there. police say that they would be less expensive than using a helicopter or a patrol car. there will be a meeting to talk about drones on january 22nd. >> still ahead on the news at 5. but we know about leadership changes coming to antioch police department following a major scandal involving officers exchanging racist text messages. plus

>> our top story this half-hour, a change in leadership is coming to the embattled antioch police department the city manager's expected to appoint a new acting police chief this week as kron four's philippe djegal reports for us. the appointment comes as the city and the doj have reached an agreement in addressing corruption on the force.

>> on tuesday, interim antioch police chief brian addington is expected to re retire and city manager bessie scott plans on announcing a new acting police chief and until a permanent leader is named the new acting chief will see the agency through the early stages of an agreement. the city and police department reached last week with the u.s. department of justice resulting a race discrimination investigation launched by the doj back in 2022, is a very important milestone that will that has been reached here during the course of the investigation. nearly half of antioch police officers were put on leave while the feds looked into racist text messages exchanged by officers which led to a larger corruption scandal and resulted in convictions. civil rights attorney john burris represents at least 26 plants in civil cases against the police department. some of whom have had charges reduced in court from fallout from the
