shane plus, a change in leadership could be coming to the embattled if you police department. >> is at 6. >> good evening, everybody. thanks for joining us on kron. 4 news at 6. i'm vicki liviakis grant lotus our top story. the city of oakland has now its 3rd mayor in less than a month. councilmember kevin jenkins was selected by his fellow council members as the interim mayor this afternoon. but as kron four's, dan kerman tells us tonight, the spotlight is once again on former congresswoman barbara lee. and the question remains, will she or won't she run for mayor? oakland congresswoman barbara lee registered ali for oakland. mayor 2025 campaign finance committee with the secretary of state's office. now, a spokesman for lee says she'll announce later this week if she's actually going to run for mayor of oakland,

she would certainly come out as the odds-on favorite. she's more than likely to win media and political strategist justin berton served as communications director for former oakland mayor libby schaff properly should expect to answer the question. >> why are you doing this at age? 78? do you have the strength, the stamina and the commitment. everyone understands that she's an iconic, meaningful, impressive person that we've all been rooting for in congress. will we be rooting for her in the mayor's office? >> burton says lee's popularity during a quarter century in congress is clearly to her advantage. but he says some may compared to former oakland congressman ron de limbs whose term as mayor was not so successful when bron deland's came back from congress and ran for mayor. >> he left oaklanders feeling a little bit like he didn't get the job. he wasn't there every day. he wasn't knee deep into the work. he wasn't

outside every day meeting with constituents. he didn't seem to have the energy and the desire to lead as a mayor. >> for now, oakland's interim mayor is kevin jenkins monday. the oakland city council selected him as council president and as such he will serve as interim mayor until a special election is held on april. 15th. >> we want to get back to a place where we're doing our basic services. well, where we're giving our unsheltered folks housed. we'll fill in potholes where our fire stations are open. i'm sure that we will work together, get this figured out and make sure that we get the budget figured out and make sure that we provide a smooth transition for the next mayor. jenkins is oakland's 3rd mayor in less than a month. >> he takes the reins from nikki fortunato bas who was just elected to the alameda county board of supervisors basabe in interim mayor since december 17th following the recall of mayor sheng thao. dan kerman kron. 4 news. there were other major changes at

today's oakland city council meeting like really in a brown, a sack hunger and ken houston being sworn in as new members of the city council. >> while acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead, the new leaders outlined their goats. >> this is an all-hands-on-deck moment for oakland. then we rise and fall on the strength of our ability to work together. and i know that we have some really tough times ahead. >> both locally and at the national level. and yet my heart is overjoyed for the opportunity to work alongside all of you really help up with oakland and create in oakland. that serves as a positive vision for other cities. and i know that we can do this together. thank you. thank former council member rebecca kaplan was also appointed to fill the seat vacated when nikki fortunato bas was elected to the alameda county board of supervisors. >> the special election to fill the seat left open by bass will be held at the same time as the special mayoral election. april 15th and this wednesday, daniel lurie will be sworn in as the new mayor

of san francisco. we'll have live special coverage of his inauguration wednesday morning, starting at 11 o'clock. meanwhile, back in the east day-to-day oakland, firefighters spoke out against the temporary closure of fire stations. >> as of today to oakland, fire stations are closed this morning, oakland firefighters gathered on the steps of city hall to demand that the city reopened the recently closed stations. oakland is facing a budget deficit of about 129 million dollars. the city was counting on the sale of the oakland coliseum site to fill that budget gap. but the deal has yet to go through as a result. the city is making significant cuts to services the police department and fire department are by far oakland's largest expenses and in an effort to save money, fire stations. 25 28 are temporarily closed. the fire department worries that these closures, but the people who live near the stations at risk. >> you will not have a fire engine doorstep in 4 minutes

like you would have just yesterday. you will not quickly have firefighter paramedics to help you or your family and what could have been a small blaze. for a small fire near your house will become a conflagration leaving tragedy its wake. >> firefighters are also calling on the city and alameda county to quickly complete the sale of the coliseum site and restore services. the controversy surrounding san mateo county sheriff christina corpus is going nowhere. a report against the sheriff was released last year followed by calls for her resignation. but the sheriff is now countering with a complaint against the county claiming discrimination and kron four's. rob nesbitt spoke with her attorney today. sheriff christina corpus was scheduled to speak today at one 30 pm, but that press conference was canceled. her lawyer says that's because new information was discovered over the weekend. that needs to be combed through on friday. kron 4 received a copy of the 5 page claim filed against san mateo county. >> claiming sheriff christina

corpus is a victim of discrimination, harassment and defamation calls for the sheriff's resignation started after 400 page report was released by the county's independent investigator. corpus was accused of racism, retaliation, homophobia, abuse of power and having a romantic relationship with the assistant sheriff, her lawyer bradgate says the incomplete investigation was missing key evidence and done for legal reasons. the typical practices you interview all of your witnesses under oath. >> in the tape recorder, videotape them or both. in this case, only one witness was videotaped tape, rather. and that's because he insisted on it. the claim against the county was filed on december 3rd for the amount of 10 million dollars we were supposed to hear from the sheriff in her own words monday about the details of the claim. but the press conference was canceled. sheriff was unavailable because of developments going on. and this is something that's rapidly evolving. so

there's some new information that we received that we want to check out so that we can accurately reported to the media. san mateo county attorney john neville and says the claim against the county is without merit and that if a lawsuit is filed in the future, the county will address the baseless allegations in court. legal analyst steven clark says this is the first time in months the sheriff has been on the offense. what sheriff corpus is saying is that i've been unfairly targeted here. i've been unfairly branded a racist among other things. >> and what she's now saying is that she is the victim and she is the one that should be making the claim against the county. the san mateo county board of supervisors has placed an amendment on the march ballot asking voters to grant them the power to remove sheriff corpus from office. >> reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> thank you, rob. is we get a peek outside? well, is the view from sutro tower and you can just barely see some lights there to the to the right and maybe a little and in the center because there

it's so much fog out there so much. i mean, this area is known for it, but it seems like we're getting heavy dose or yeah, that fog out there right whole lot is often status it's not touching the ground. this fog touching the ground right now. and so. >> that cloud deck out there. pretty thick in spots as we speak, looking down from the berkeley hills. she is stretching inside the bay and it's been pretty gray in parts of the bay area today. keeping those temperatures down. about to get into a big change, though, in the pattern. now, of course, we head into wet and to december things kind of dried out. now, but it's going to be very dry for the foreseeable future. high pressure takes over. but the wind really going to become more of a story here in the next 24 hours. in fact, expecting some gusty winds to develop overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. right now, not much in the way with just some light winds so far. but as that wind ramps up, it's going to be a dry wind that's going to mix up the low clouds and the fog that's going to go away. but we got wind advisories going up across much of the bay area, especially over the mountain tops very gusty winds across the diablo range, the oakland hills, parts of the north bay will continue their even on

the coastal range. some of those gusts getting very blustery, some 40 50 mile an hour gusts. maybe some occasional 60 on our winds out there as well. you can even down the urban areas tomorrow. we've got some 30 40 mile an hour gusts in the forecast by early tomorrow morning. expected to be a blustery day around the bay area tomorrow morning. but why should be a nice afternoon? those temperatures, some places getting near 70 degrees. that's war. all right. thanks, lawrence. in the east bay, police in antioch are investigating a deadly shooting that happened just after 10, 15 this morning. >> when they were called to rockford drive, police say they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. he was taken to the hospital where he died. police are still investigating what led to that shooting. the victim's identity has not been released. the shooting comes as a change in police leadership at the antioch police department is imminent. this week the city manager is expected to appoint a new acting chief of police. our kron four's philippe djegal reports. >> on tuesday, interim antioch police chief brian addington

is expected to re retire and city manager bessie scott plans on announcing a new acting police chief and until a permanent leader is named the new acting chief will see the agency through the early stages of an agreement. the city and police department reached last week with the u.s. department of justice resulting a race discrimination investigation launched by the doj back in 2022. different. very important milestone that will that has been reached here during the course of the investigation. nearly half of any police officers were put on leave while the feds looked into racist text messages exchanged by officers which led to a larger corruption scandal and resulted in convictions. civil rights attorney john burris represents at least 26 plants in civil cases against the police department. some of whom have had charges reduced in court from fallout from the scandal. real concerned about back and forth enough for the green that. >> although we like it in

principle, the truck got to tell what we're trying to get done as well. but i do have concerns about her famously represented plaintiffs in the oakland raiders case which led to federal oversight over the oakland police department. >> but burris says that will not be the case for there's not going to be a federal monitor. the problem is this case not in case was not in court. >> and because not in court is overall controlled by federal judge that the agreement, the agreement stipulates the police department will hire an expert law enforcement consultant jointly selected by both sides to review and update police policies, procedures and training on non discriminatory policing. use-of-force and other issues and tasks the department with the collection and monitoring of the data collected for 5 years or not. the police department will have >> the 42 to stick to foggy agreement is an open question and one that even if you may

>> vice president kamala harris presided over a joint session of congress today where lawmakers voted to certify donald trump's election process that was in stark contrast to the one on january 6, 4 years ago. catherine heenan is live in the newsroom with more on that story. hike out for high pick in grant today's basic ritual of democracy has generally been one that. >> does not attract a lot of attention. it does not always fill the seats, but today it did. >> it's a very important day. was about what should be the norm. >> it probably was not an easy day for vice president harris certifying the victory of the man who beat her in a contentious presidential race. despite a snowstorm in washington, senators and representatives filled the

house floor, including senator jd vance, donald trump's vice president elect. >> the whole number of the electors appointed to vote. president of the united states is 538. harris stoically presided over the certification of her own loss. republicans applauded after the counting of each state. trump won. >> democrats rose to applaud harris when her total electoral votes were counted. it was all over in roughly an hour. but many lawmakers were looking back to 4 years ago when rioters stormed the capitol during the same process. senate majority leader chuck schumer declaring democrats would not repeat history on this january 6. >> our side will not engage in election denialism. >> president elect trump is considering pardons for those who breached the capitol for years ago. they've been political prisoners. they have

been political hostages and i can't wait to see their pardons. this is what it looks like when you are patriotic and believe in democracy, you certify the election without political violence. meantime, amid today's calm scene reminders of how things have changed since 4 years ago, the capitol was on heavy locked on with black metal fencing around the building and for the first time homeland security had designated the day as a national special security event. >> president biden has been talking a lot about making sure there is a peaceful transition of power. not really saying a lot, but last night he did warn americans not to forget the violent attack on the capitol. back to you. >> and intend to resign as party leader as prime minister. this country deserves a real choice in the next elections. >> canadian prime minister justin trudeau has resigned. he will stay on as prime

minister until a new leader is chosen. trudeau has faced pressure from his own party to quit over the past few months following election losses and the resignation of key ministers, the canadian parliament will be suspended until march, which will allow time for a liberal party leadership race back here in the bay. there is a beach hazard advisory in effect until tomorrow night due to dangerous swimming and surf conditions. officials say you could see strong rip currents and waves breaking as high as 20 feet. they say there's also a chance for sneaker waves which come farther onto the beach. then you might expect reminder from experts to never turn your back on the ocean and always keep pets on a leash right near you. >> all right, live look outside here as we take a look at sfo. >> that what do you there's been a lot of fog out there, lawrence. hopefully it's not killing too many flights yet. pretty gray out there. pretty a good part of the bay area today, but we are going to see more of those waves moving along the coastline. i think that fog is going away and

it's almost going to feel like beach weather in the coming days. see temperatures up in the 60's. maybe some places spike into the 70's as high pressure takes over. but that's what staters to go up the beach and then you get these huge storms off the coastline, still generating some big swells out toward the beaches. and that's what we've had almost all winter long. you get these storms really racing across the pacific with some very strong winds. the gust out over the open waters and that generates that's well, the pounds, the coastline. and we've seen some of the large swath there. and again, tonight seeing more that just off the coastline. you can see the area shaded here in yellow that is approaching the coast. some of those waves now tracking that at about 22 feet. so the forecasts of some of those waves, 18 to 20 feet, a real possibility in the coming days. make sure you should be a the extra careful along the water's edge has some of those ways we can to move on shore. so strong with rip currents. you can be sure that surfers got to be aware of that. a fisherman also be careful. don't get knocked off the rocks out there. pretty dangerous out there along the water's edge. high pressure is going to continue to build in the north and the east of us. while low pressure kind of drops over the great basin for

the south and the southern nevada and the difference when the tube that's going to crank up the winds outside. so we're going to be talking a lot about the wind and the next couple days. some very gusty winds here in the bay area and of fire danger in southern california. other than the winds, though. yeah, the temperatures boy believable by tomorrow afternoon about 68 degrees in san jose. 67 degrees in oakland about 66 degrees in san francisco. so really some nice weather compared to other parts of the country where they're dealing wite some freezing temperatures. i think that's the way it's going to play out the next couple days. yeah, we're gonna have those winds tomorrow. those was likely be in calm down a little bit as we head in toward wednesday. then we see those temperatures spike a bit in the 70's as we head into weekend to i think we're gonna see another round of some of those gusty winds as we get into next week. very gusty winds here. they've been strong winds in southern california as we head toward next week as add those santa anas really scary down there. yeah, they haven't any rain. so very dangerous fire conditions. how have we been ourselves with the rain? we have a couple weeks here. least tell you. i think we've got a without at seeing any rain at all. at least a couple

>> the first u.s. bird flu death has been reported in louisiana. health officials making that announcement this morning. this comes as the u.s. health and human services department says it's going to grant about 306 million dollars to help monitoring what's happening with the bird flulall around the country. about 183 million of that funding will be given to regional state and local preparedness. the cdc will be given about 111 million dollars for enhanced federal monitoring of the h 5 n one virus. 61 human cases have been reported so far in the u.s. since april, mostly on dairy farms for the virus

infected cattle. the first severe case in human was reported back in december. a san francisco native has been named the new archbishop. >> of washington, d.c.. >> talking about cardinal robert mcelroy, who is the current bishop of san diego. >> he's known as a progressive in the catholic church and his diocese of san diego includes california's border with mexico. the pope's move to put mcilroy at the top post in washington comes just weeks before trump is sworn in for a second term. mcilroy opposed trump's immigration agenda during his first 4 years in the white house. he's also joined other california bishops who issued a statement supporting migrants after trump was elected recently. he's also been welcoming towards lgbtq catholics in support of of women as deacons in the church and for the first time ever, a woman will lead a major office at the vatican today, pope francis appointed sister simone abram villa and italian on to become

the head of the department responsible for all the catholic church's religious orders. the appointment marks a major step in the pope's goal of giving women more leadership roles in governing the church. and for the first time a woman is responsible for all the women who do much of the catholic church's work, including the world's 600,000 nuns. the nation's highest federal law enforcement department wants to slap down a bid by donald trump to delay a pending tiktok ban. >> the justice department is asking the u.s. supreme court to bypass president elect donald trump's influence. attorneys for trump filed a motion with the highest court to block the law that would ban tiktok here in the u.s. if its parent company bytedance does not sell it. attorney general merrick garland maintains of the popular social media platform is a threat to national security because of potential chinese government access to u.s.. consumer data.
