>> is it 10? it's game week. breaking news. >> that breaking news coming to us tonight out of china where a strong earthquake is responsible for the deaths of several dozen people. good evening and thank you for joining us for kron. 4 news at 10. >> i'm dan thorn and i'm noelle bellow. the usgs says the magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook a mountainous region in western china near nepal. this footage we're about to show you from a chinese news station shows homes and

buildings crumbled to the ground. as of right now, at least 53 people have been killed nearly 40 others have been hurt, rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing at this hour. and of course, we know effort there is going to be from happening for a while. yeah, for sure. let's check in now with our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. for more on this story talk about some remote locations, right? so they're out really. >> in the far reaches of that area. and that area also known for some very large earthquakes. this one a 7.1. you can see nepal here, china up here to the north between here. we've got what's called a subduction zone. you've got the indian plate coming underneath the eurasian plate. what happens as it dives underneath that plate? it often will cause these large earthquakes in that area. here we go. we've had that 7.1 and numerous aftershocks after that as well. that one coming at a depth of 6 miles. and of course, this is located right near an extremely famous place. mount everest. mount everest grows because we get these large earthquakes. in fact, about 2 millimeters a

year probably grew from this last earthquake in 2. lawrence, thank you. we'll continue to follow up on that story back here at home in the east bay. the usually quiet city of alameda now dealing with a series of break-ins and robberies. multiple businesses were hit since last week. >> kron four's lindsay for joining us live in alameda tonight. after speaking with the owner of one of those businesses, lindsay. >> yeah, i'm standing in the marina village parkway plaza right in front of 3.60, degrees. gore mabry toes and they burglarized and vandalized last week. additionally in the same plaza, a lucky california was also looted. >> growing. if everywhere. more the fitting cities. i surprised happened. get an >> javier benitez owner of 3.60, degrees. gore mabry toes is still reeling from the break-in last week, burglars

smashed the window of the store at the marina village parkway center and took a register that had $1000 inside. >> maybe 50%, since scott that this is going to cost. have much here. >> additionally store payment ocessing ipads, restoring and security cameras were destroyed. he now has use this older system to ring up customers. benitez says this was his first time getting targeted in all. 35 years of being in business. right now we see more and more especially these sending multiple other stores in alameda have been hit lucky, california in the same plaza as 3.60, gourmet burritos was looted twice. also popular beauty stores all to and sally's beauty was broken into and the front door of izzy's alameda, a cannabis store was vandalized but nothing stolen. we are going to hold those who have >> committed crimes in our city accountable. and i'm looking forward to some follow-up on the story.

>> and let me to police. she was shot. joshi says these recent crimes are suspected to be linked. we have some leads. we have. >> we're putting a case together and i'm confident that there will be resolution to that. these events. >> and alameda police tell me that they're looking through transit patterns to help solve the specific crimes through license plate reader technology that is at the exit and entry way of the city. additionally, business owners are all help are also helping to solve these crimes through sharing their security footage in alameda. lindsey ford, back to you. >> lindsey, thank you for that live report. new at 10, the man convicted of kidnapping and assaulting denise huskins in the so-called delay hogan girl case is facing new charges in another bay area, kidnapping. mueller was charged today with a 2015 kidnapping in contra costa county. and last week he was

charged with a series of 2009 home invasions in santa clara county. prosecutors say the new charges stamper recent confessions he made in prison letters. mueller is serving a 40 year sentence for kidnapping and huskins has documented in the netflix series american nightmare. hoskins is set to appear in monterey county tomorrow at seaside city hall to talk about these new charges against him. a woman has been charged with attempted murder in connection to a san francisco shooting last week which injured 2 people, one of them, a social worker who is now in critical condition. spoke with her mom and she joins us in the newsroom with more. sara? >> i spoke with daniel drake's mom on the phone as her daughter fights for her life to me says she's calling on her daughter's employer to have more security on site for social workers. i also spoke with a woman who lives at the building where this shooting happened. she couldn't believe what unfolded.

>> oh, my god. while shot by the same person. >> christie abrams in shock learning the details of a shooting that happened inside her building at mercy housing that injured 2 people. it happened last thursday morning around 10 at the supportive housing building on bryant street across from the hall of justice. the complex is home to people who are formally unsheltered, according to the san francisco district attorney's office. 49 year-old monique davis punch someone multiple times inside the elevator. prosecutors say davis then grabbed a pistol from her room when down to the lobby and opened fire. a social worker was shot in the face. another person was shot in the arm. police arrested davis about a mile away mercy housing partners with up a scuffle. community service is the executive director beth stokes released a statement saying in part our thoughts and prayers go out to the ecs and mercy staff who were grievously injured by this senseless act of violence. ecs

will do everything in our power to support the victims, their families, our staff and our residents. as we navigate these challenging circumstances. stokes also says their top priority is the safety and well-being of residents and staff abram says mercy housing put out a notice to residents. center. >> paper around about it. we had been day was a referred to it as incident without seeing water was. i didn't know where it happened. you know, i haven't felt unsafe here. >> but abrams says this shooting has rattled others. there's people here saying they're going leave the building. >> davis was in court monday afternoon facing several charges. the district attorneys office says she committed this crime while out on bail for another. so the da moved to have her behind bars pending trial due to the public safety risk she poses. i'm sara stinson reporting back to you.

>> all right, sarah, thank you. another shooting happened just 3 blocks away on saturday and this happened around 6.30, in the evening on 5th street. the msc homeless shelter that victim taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. police say they arrested 29 year-old taylor read in connection with the shooting. the circumstances, though, of the shooting remain unclear. >> embattled mateo county sheriff christina corpus is taking legal action against the county. we were supposed to hear from the sheriff today about this complaint, but she canceled her appearance. the complaint was filed last month. it argues corpus is a victim of discrimination, harassment and defamation. corpus is currently accused of racism, homophobia among other things, her lawyer says the investigation into the allegations against her was missing key evidence and done for illegal reasons. >> the typical practices you interview all of your witnesses under oath in the tape recorder. videotape them or both. in this case, only

one witness was videotaped audio tape rather. and that's because he insisted on it. >> as for why the sheriff canceled today's press conference, her lawyer says it's because new information has been discovered over the weekend and it needs to be sorted out. oakland leaders have appointed council member kevin jenkins to take over the position of mayor temporarily. this comes ahead of a special election in april to decide who. >> well permanently leave the city. and we're learning tonight that former congresswoman barbara lee d could be in the running to daily filed campaign finance paperwork with the secretary of state's office, signaling a possible run for mayor this spring. she's among 13 people who are registered with the secretary of state's office so far. former congresswoman will confirm her campaign in the coming days. lee served in congress 26 years. her term ended just last week. >> barbara lee should expect to answer the question. why

are you doing this at age? 78? do you have the strength, the stamina and the commitment. >> kevin jenkins is oakland's 3rd mayor in less than a month. he takes the reins from nikki fortunato bas who just was elected to the alameda county board of supervisors. bass had been interim mayor since december 17th following the recall of former mayor sheng thao. there were other major changes at today's open city council meeting. 3 new city council members were sworn in and former council member rebecca kaplan was appointed to fill the seat of nikki fortunato bas who want to seat, of course, on the alameda county board of supervisors, the new members of the council spoke about their goals of moving the city forward. >> this is an all-hands-on-deck moment for oakland. then we rise and fall on the strength of our ability to work together. and i know that we have some really tough times ahead. >> both locally and at the national level. and yet my heart is overjoyed for the opportunity to work alongside all of you really help up with

trump supporters stormed the u.s. capitol trying to stop congress from certifying joe biden's election win in the east bay. a group called the patriots of contra costa county held a january 6th rally today on the 24 overpass in lafayette organizer. lisa disbrow says it's time for the nation to move on from the negativity. zand hate leading up to the recent presidential election. >> we don't need anymore. you're on the right now. we've plenty and we have a lot of suffering americans every time we're up here, we praying for the people that drive through because we know their lives have been very, very hard. >> inauguration day is set for january. 20th. well, the first time in 2 years, governor gavin newsom is proposing a state budget without a deficit. the proposed 322 million rather billion dollar budget includes more than 100 billion dollars for public schools and more money

for law enforcement agencies to take on retail theft and other crimes. he's also promising some significant funding to solve housing problems. what these encampments cleaned up. it's 750 million dollars in common resolution grants. that's not out of sight out of mind. that's not just that's about a resolution. the budget, however, is mostly placeholders. california waits to see if incoming president trump will follow through on threats to revoke billions in federal dollars. >> police in antioch are investigating a deadly shooting from this morning. officers say just after 10:15am, they were called to rockford drive there. they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. he was taken to the hospital where he died. police are still investigating what led up to that shooting. the victim's identity has not yet been released. a change in leadership is coming to the

antioch police department. city leaders are expected to appoint a new acting chief of police this week. the appointment comes as the city and department of justice resolve a race discrimination case that started back in 2022, the investigation resulted in nearly half of antioch police officers being put on leave for racist text messages that have been sent and a larger corruption scandal. it also led to several convictions, part of the agreement is for officers to get training on non discriminatory policing, use of force and other issues. civil rights attorneys consider the agreement a milestone but still have concerns. >> a real concerned about a back and forth enough for the green that although we like it in principle, the truck front of duck tale of what we're trying to get done as well. but i do have concerns about whether or not the police department will have the 42 to stick to. foggy agreement is an open question one that even if you may have good

intentions now, it's a long to ultimate success. and that will de la jefa >> the police department acknowledges the federal investigation revealed failures within their department. they say they're committed to ensuring it never happens again. >> president biden wants to expand a ban on offshore oil and gas drilling. the president says he's using authority under the outer continental shelf lands act to protect offshore areas on both east and west coasts. the action would also cover a portion of the gulf of mexico as well as alaska's northern bering sea. it would also be difficult for president elect donald trump to reverse it because it would likely require an act of congress. trump has says that he wants to expand offshore drilling. commercial dungeness crab season officially underway and the bay area after 2 month delay yesterday, commercial crab fishermen who work south of the mendocino county line were finally able to set off their traps. the dungeness

crab season normally begins in november, but it was pushed back by wildlife officials to protect migrating humpback whales. officials say there will be a limit on the number of traps to reduce entanglement risk for those whales. >> meantime, there is a beach hazard advisory in effect until tomorrow night due to dangerous swimming and surf conditions. officials say you could see some strong rip currents and breaking waves as high as 20 feet. they also say there's a high chance for sneaker waves, which of course, come further onto the beach than expected. a reminder to never turn your back on to the ocean. of course. always keep your pet on a leash. kids keep their hands in your hand. i it's chilly out, too. so i don't know why you want to hang out by the beach, it's also extremely foggy. yeah, that's gonna and 60's near the coast, a meaningful want to dabble their toes out there. some places getting near 70. gotta be careful out there. those waves are running large out along the coastline. of

course, fog today. still some patchy fog lingering inside the bay. you see some of that out there right now. but >> yeah, we're gonna get those offshore winds blow overnight tonight. and that's going clear out your skies is their approaches. the coastline that tends to sink in, clearing out warm you up to. we do have some strong rip tides developing along the coastline. again, this man, a long, rough winter with some of those large waves moving in along the coastline. you get these big storms off to meet acosta. they generate that's well. we've seen more of them out there in the middle of the pacific right now, the focus on the storm's going to move further north. >> but they're generating that's wellness. well moves in the california coastline. so that's what we're looking at right now. you've got some largest well off the coastline. in fact, some of the swells looking really large about 20 footers up there right now that will be moving in along the coastline as we head in toward tomorrow. so best to keep away from the immediate coastline. if you can, of those big time waves rolling in over the next couple of days. in the meantime, though, it is dry out there right now. scanning your skies of the doppler radar. we're looking good so far. we do have that patchy, dense fog, but things are

going to begin to change now, as we're going to see the winds starting to pick up right now, not too terribly windy. starting to see a little bit of a win there in the fairfield area. turning more of a northerly direction. that's a sign of things to come. these winds really going to be kicking up and the next 10, 12 hours or so. so wind advisory going up around the bay area, the entire bay area now covered in those wind advisories, expecting some of those gusts, its highest, 50, maybe 60 miles per hour across some of the peaks. we'll have more on that in your 10 10 coming up in a few minutes. all right, lawrence, thank you. all. tonight, families grieving after a father was shot and killed. >> early in the morning hours of new year's eve. and he was just trying to go to work. >> yeah, it's another homicide recorded in the city of oakland, willie bernstein, a husband and father of 2 young children. he went to work in west oakland early tuesday morning, but became the latest victim of gun violence. his mother spoke out lea. she can't understand why anyone would want to kill the hardworking young family man.

>> oakland firefighters are speaking out against the temporary closure of fire stations. the city closed stations. 25 28 today as a way to deal 129 million dollar budget deficit. firefighters gathered on the steps of city hall this morning demanding the city reverse the decision city officials chose to close stations. 25 28 saying they tend to be less busy during winter and spring. they estimate a six-month closure of both sites will save them 5 million dollars. but firefighters say the closures put the people who live nearby at risk. >> you will not have a fire engine doorstep in 4 minutes like you would have just yesterday. you will not quickly have firefighter paramedics to help you or your family and what could have been a small blaze. for a small fire near your house will become a conflagration leaving tragedy its wake. >> firefighters are also calling on the city and

alameda county to quickly complete the sale of the coliseum site and restore services. the city was counting on that sale to fill the budget gap. san mateo county sheriff's office is warning people about a scam targeting the hispanic community. deputies say scammers are calling people and offering to register children through the amber alert system. but it's just a way to get confidential information and even meet with the residents at their homes. authorities say this is clearly not how the amber alert system works at all and they ask residents to not pick up calls from unknown or possible scam number, sometimes your phone shows that now the sheriff's office says if you've been contacted, call them. still ahead here on kron for news at 10, a winter storm bringing heavy snow and power outages to the mid-atlantic will take a look at conditions across the country and of course, check of your bay area forecast too. >> plus, from the bay area to hollywood, there were several appearances by celebrities

>> the ongoing bird flu crisis has turned deadly in the united states. health officials in louisiana confirming the first human death from the virus today in the bay area. the infections are leading to egg shortages. >> kron four's zac moment reports. >> this is a safe way in pleasant hill with no eggs insight. this is another safeway in san francisco's financial district. this one in milpitas get the picture. and i saw a lot of posts on social media that it had.

>> made its way to san jose today with pictures of cleared shelves. and so i've heard that it's pretty bad. and i prayed about avian late rosa got his hall of shopping done at the safeway in midtown san jose. he didn't even bother going after the eggs. all that was left. were these broken once? it's not like an essential for me. so when they get expensive or hard to find, i just wish other other things. >> that are available. if you better get ready to spent at san jose's lying market off saratoga. it's 10 bucks for dozen white eggs and $22 for brown the usda has been tracking the slow but steady increase in egg prices over the last several months. putting a big squeeze on the system is avian influenza, which the usda says led to the loss of nearly 40 million egg-laying hens. >> and safeway employees tell us they are getting fewer eggs delivered to them and customers are buying more and more each time for the very high and that bb bakery and

longer before things improve with the egg market. the usda says it could take up to the 2nd half >> of 2025. before things improve reporting here in san jose jacmel. but kron 4 news. >> the bay area mexican restaurant chain is shut down after being fined by the federal government for allowing underage workers to work outside of business hours and operate dangerous equipment. see casa and restaurants in emeryville, napa and san ramon, all of them now closed. this is the message that you see when you go to its site. the u.s. department of labor find the chain more than $45,000. officials say they allowed employees as young as 14 to work outside of permitted hours during school days. they all said the chain didn't give unemployed the proper space to pump milk during the work day, the restaurant was fined more than $3,000 in wages to the employee as a result. >> new at 10 short term rental property owners in marin county have 6 months to apply for a new license last year,

marin county supervisors approved new regulations. those new rules cap the number of short-term rentals to 1200 for properties in unincorporated areas of the county. the licenses are limited to one per operator and must be renewed by property owners. every 2 years. among other new regulations. they need to follow anyone seeking to continue operating their rental has until july. first to submit a renewal applications. the massive winter storm blanketing much of the u.s. is only getting more intense. >> snowfall in some areas already setting records the midwest, the hardest hit so far. kansas city reporting more than 11 inches the most in more than 30 years and some areas of northern kansas got 18 inches. winter storm warnings are right now in effect from the ohio valley to the mid-atlantic with temperatures plunging in the coming days due to a polar vortex. officials are trying to clear the roads and get the lights back on as soon as possible. we're very aggressive with our snow

removal operation here. but i'll take us a few days probably to fully clear and clean the entire city everywhere. >> the polar vortex is pulling extremely cold air down from the north pole. it's expected to bring temperatures down about 12 to 25 degrees colder than normal. raising fears of frostbite and hypothermia and many people in those areas are out and about spending time with their neighbors and trying to enjoy what they're calling a winter wonderland before. it all ices over here just over wasn't that cold. but >> looks like things are going to be, you know, change chilly there for a little while. let's check in with our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. for more on lawrence, i've always thought to be fun for maybe a couple of about his head open and that snow. wilder, that's arts a little bit old. but yeah, they're going to be into it for a while. i think the month of january be unbelievably cold across other parts of the country in the bay area while really going to look out. a lot of folks going want to enjoy the weather we're going

to have. but >> it has been a rough couple of days. you see that storm system rotating across the plains making its way along the eastern seaboard beginning to wind down. now. but behind that, there's lot of cold air in place and things are set up now. we're gonna see another storm developing out there. so we still have winter storm warnings and some winter weather advisories continue a little further south that will be in place until at least early in the morning tomorrow. and things begin to settle down there. but that cold air. yeah, it's here to stay. so we're gonna see all that cold air plunge all the way to the deep south. in fact, you see all the areas of white here all the way down to houston across louisiana. going to see some cold temperatures. they're hovering right around the 20's is going to be very cold, very windy. and then that next storm system comes rolling in and this gets to be a mess. you get that freezing rain. you can see the pink. they're not going to be moving on in and that will cause a lot of probably get that freezing rain on some of the trees, the limbs and also some of the power lines that can bring that down and have some power outages and that can cause all kinds of more problems. temperatures right now you're looking at 31 degrees in dallas. it's 35 in

orleans. you've got 13 in lincoln and 8 degrees right now in fargo. tomorrow, the high even colder than that. only 4 in fargo about 28 degrees in norman, 17 in wichita, but cold 14 in casper. so much of the country is going to be in the deep freeze. they are really get lucky. yeah, we've got some fog out there right now. we're going to be talking about some wind here the next couple of days. it's dense out there toward the golden gate bridge that's going to mix south overnight tonight. high pressure going to slide along the west coast. look at the jet stream. does because the move to the north and east and that's going allow much of that cold air dropping across the rest of the united states. well, here in the bay area. yeah, we're gonna be talking about the wind but really some pretty comfortable temperatures go along with that wind gusts overnight tonight. yeah, 40 50 mile an hour gusts across some of the mountaintops. that wouldn't be a surprise. the coastal range is also going to see those offshore winds continuing going kind of a blustery day out the day and then things going to settle down, i think as we head toward tomorrow night. but long range forecast does not look promising if you want rain, high pressure building in and you can see those

northerly wind kind of kicking into more of a seabreeze going develop as we head in toward the early part of the weekend. and then next week, guess what? we get back to those normally winds again and some very dry conditions. that's the way it's going to stay for some time long range models. now have us dry through at least the middle of the month. i think even a lot longer than that. temperatures tomorrow, though, how about this? we get those offshore winds and yeah, it's going to be nice. almost 70 degrees in san jose. i think we may pop 70 as we head in toward the middle this week. so yeah, there you go. you're long stretch of nice weather coming our way. unfortunate. we are right in the heart of winter. this or we like to see those storms come kind of replenish all of our reza bore is unfortunately. well, i just don't see anything through at o% least the middle of the month. maybe not til the latter half of gen. really? yeah, looks very, very dry here. and i mean, i guess maybe we can just keep our fingers crossed for maybe a wetter spring. yeah, sometimes. sometimes what you get to march miracle, right? yeah, too. so. >> it all depends. but other parts of the country, i'm sure they're going to be wishing they had weather for sure. yeah. things assessed. taking a live look now at the carter
